CIVIL WAR UNIT HISTORY 106TH PENNSYLVANIA VOLS.

Lot # 68 (Sale Order: 80 of 896)

Civil War Unit History of the 106th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Copyright by Joseph R.C. Ward in 1906. 457 pages with a complete roster and numerous photographs of the officers and enlisted men. Overall very good condition with a tight spine. Minor wear at inside spine with some discoloration of fly leaf. History The regiment was recruited from Philadelphia between August and October 1861, with the exception of company K, which was transferred from the 27th Pennsylvania Infantry. Turner G. Morehead was selected colonel of the unit, with William L. Curry as lieutenant colonel and John H. Stover as major. It moved to Poolesville, Maryland, where it became part of Edward D. Baker's "California Brigade." The 106th saw its first action at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, on October 21, 1861. It was next transferred to the II Corps of the Army of the Potomac. With the rest of George B. McClellan's army, it fought in the Peninsula Campaign. On June 10, Lieutenant Colonel Curry was captured while visiting the picket line. During the Seven Days Battles, the regiment fought at the battles of Savage's Station, Charles City Cross Roads, and Malvern Hill. Along with the Army of the Potomac, the 106th was transferred to Washington, D.C., too late to participate in the Second Battle of Bull Run. It did fight at the Battle of Antietam, where it was rushed with the rest of the 2nd Division to the aid of Joseph Hooker's corps in the West Woods. However, division commander John Sedgwick hastened into the fight without taking time to make an adequate reconnaissance. On July 3, 1863, the third day of fighting at Gettysburg, Companies A and B were sent as skirmishers to the Bliss Farm in front of Cemetery Ridge. The 106th continued to serve through the Overland Campaign. On July 27, 1864, those eligible for discharge were sent to Washington, D.C., where they performed guard duty until September 10, when they were sent home. The rest of the regiment was consolidated into a battalion of three companies—F, H, and K. This battalion fought through the Appomattox Campaign and was discharged on June 30, 1865. Casualties during the war Killed and mortally wounded: 9 officers, 90 enlisted men Wounded: 1 officer, 94 enlisted men Died of disease: 24 officers, 373 enlisted men Captured or missing: 5 officers, 152 men Total casualties: 39 officers, 709 enlisted men

Charles Oliver Brown, D.D. followed his father at the age of thirteen, Major Oliver M. Brown, with the unit, served throughout the war and became the "Boy Bugler" of Sherman's Army. Several Kelleys Island men volunteered and served in the 3rd Ohio Cavalry including: Pitt Simmons, John Ward, John Monaghan, Stephen French, Michael Hughes, August Raab, John T. Woodford, George Wright, Henry Pope and Jacob Rush (mostly companies A and L). Jacob Rush's involvement in the unit was particularly interesting. He enlisted at the age of 15, was brought home by his parents, then allowed to enlist again a few months later. Just weeks before his enlistment expired, he was sent on one last mission and captured as a spy. He provided a first hand account of his interrogation by General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He spent 8 months in Cahaba Prison where he helped organize a (failed) escape attempt. Upon his release at the end of the war, he was one of the few soldiers who survived the 'Sultana' explosion. He worked his way home and established the Island House resort on Kelleys Island. When that burned in 1877, he moved to Larned, Kansas and played a key role in building that city. He also served as a Kansas State Senator. He was a prolific writer for the local newspaper, the Islander, and shared many stories of his time in service in the 3rd Ohio Cavalry
Civil War unit history of the Third Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. Published in Toledo, Ohio, 1910. 296 pages including a full roster. Book is complete but spine has been reboun...mored. There is staining throughout but text is legible. The 3rd Ohio Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The regiment was organized in September 1861 by future Colonel Lewis Zahm. In April 1862, it moved with General Don Carlos Buell through Tennessee. During that summer, the 3rd Ohio Cavalry participated in the Siege of Corinth. It later fought at the Battle of Chickamauga. In January 1864, the regiment was re-formed as its three-year term had expired. The unit later participated in raids with Stoneman and Wilson before it was discharged on August 14, 1865.
