COLT SAA COMMANDER TUSKEGEE AIRMEN

Lot # 100a (Sale Order: 101 of 571)

-Serial number 187284, manufactured in 1899. 4-3/4 inch barrel, chambered in .45/c caliber. Nickel plated with 2-piece ivory grips. Accompanying this revolver is a scarce Colt factory letter, signed by Beverly Haynes, Colt Archive Department documenting s/n 187284 being returned to the Hartford Custom Shop in 1935. The letter reads: “In the case of your inquiry on serial number 187284 we were able to find that the single action .45 cal. Was shipped back to the Hartford Custom Shop late in 1935 with the request to dismantle, lighten trigger pull, and nickel plate the revolver. It was then paid for and shipped back to a Mr. Frederick V.H. Kimble in Leavenworth Kansas.” Research discovered that Frederick V.H. Kimble was born in Portland Oregon in 1895. He graduated from the U.S. Military at West Point N.Y. and was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry June 12, 1918. Kimble went on to attend the Air Service Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas. He graduated in February 1924, and joined the 26th Attack Squadron, Third attack group, at Kelly Field. In 1934 he entered the Air Corp Tactical School at Maxwell Field in Alabama. In 1935 he attended the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. It was during this time, as documented by the Colt Archival Letter, he sent his Colt SAA revolver s/n 187284 to the Hartford Custom shop. General Kimble continued to have a distinguish career, serving important duties in various locations. In 1942 he became the commanding officer of the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Tuskegee Alabama. This school, at the command of Frederick V.H. Kimble trained America’s first black combat pilots, airmen who flew in World War II, and have always been known as the “TUSKEGEE AIRMEN”. On March 7, 1943 then Colonel Frederick Kimble U.S.A. pinned the wings on the blouses of five young black lieutenants, the first graduating class of the Tuskegee Airmen. The valor and combat flying skills of these young men and all the graduates that came later, are legends of World War II. CONDITION: Excellent overall showing 95+% of the reapplied factory nickel plating. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright & clean. Grips show little wear. C&R MKS

COLT SAA OWNED BY MEDAL OF HONOR AUDIE MURPHY

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 102 of 571)

Serial number 357442, shipped in 1958. 5-1/2 inch barrel, chambered in .45 Long Colt cartridge. This revolver falls within the range of guns known by collectors as Pre-War / Post-War Models. The reason being, these SAA revolvers were built using components manufactured by Colt prior to 1941. Only a few SAA were assembled between 1942 - 1945 when Colt all but stopped production of the SAA to support the war effort of World War II. Only 338 revolvers were assembled after the war ranging from serial numbers 356594 to 357856. The majority of these revolvers were assembled during 1947 & 1948 under the direct supervision of Harry St. John. Considered by his contemporaries as one of, if not the best Colt Master Gunsmiths of the era. All of the guns assembled by St. John bear his personal stamp "F" on the left side rear of the triggerguard. Only 244 of these revolvers were assembled by St. John and are so marked. These 244 revolvers are held in very high regard and are considered to be amongst the highest quality of all Colt revolvers. Serial number 357442 has St. Johns personal stamp "F" visible on the left side /rear of the triggerguard. Although St. John assembled this revolver in either 1947 or 1948, the gun did not ship from Colt until March 17, 1958. Documented by the accompanying Colt Archival Letter dated January 18, 1989, signed by M.S. Huber, Colt Historian Emeritus, and addressed to well known Colt Collector, Jink Howard. The Colt Archival Letter states: serial number 357442, caliber .45/C, 5-1/2 inch barrel, finished blue, type of stocks not listed, shipped to AUDIE MURPHY, 4201 TOLUCA ROAD, NORTH HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA on March 17, 1958. Number of same type guns in shipment, 2. Audie Leon Murphy was born on July 20, 1925, in Kingston Texas, a small rural community in Hunt County. He was the seventh of twelve children born to Emmett Berry Murphy and his wife Josie Bell (Killian) Murphy. Although Murphy's military enlistment papers list his birth date as 1924, his biographer David A. Smith concluded that he was indeed born in 1925, based on his California Driver's license and by Murphy himself. As a child, Murphy was a bit of a "loner". His father drifted in and out of the family's life and eventually deserted them. Murphy dropped out of school in the fifth grade to take a job for a dollar a day picking cotton, to help support his family. He also became skilled with firearms, hunting to help feed the large family. After his mother died in 1941, he worked at a radio repair shop, and at a combination general store, garage, gas station in Greenville Texas. The loss of his mother was traumatic and stayed with Murphy throughout his life. He later stated: "She died when I was sixteen. She had the most beautiful hair I've ever seen. It reached almost to the floor. She rarely talked; and always seemed to be searching for something. What it was I don't know. We didn't discuss our feelings. But when she passed away, she took something of me with her. It seems I've been searching for it ever since. Murphy always wanted to be a soldier. After the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941, he tried to enlist, but the Army, Navy, and Marine Corp all turned him down for being underweight and underage. After his sister provided an affidavit that falsified his birth date by a year, he was accepted by the U.S. Army on June 30, 1942. Murphy went on to be widely celebrated as the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II. He has been described as the most highly decorated soldier in U.S. history. He received every military combat award for valor available from the United States Army, as well as French and Belgian awards for heroism. Murphy received America's highest award, the Medal of Honor for valor he demonstrated at the age of 19 for single-handedly holding off a company of German soldiers for an hour at the Colmar Pocket of France in January 1945, before leading a successful counterattack while wounded and out of ammunition. After the war. Murphy embarked on a 21-year acting career. He played himself in the 1955 autobiographical film "To Hell and Back", based on his 1949 memoirs of the same name, but most of his roles were in Westerns. On May 28, 1971, at age 46, Murphy was killed when a private plane he was a passenger in, crashed into the side of a mountain 14 nautical miles northwest of Roanoke, Virginia, in conditions of rain, clouds, fog, and zero visibility. The pilot and four other passengers were also killed. CONDITION: Serial number 357442 remains in excellent original condition. Approximately 85-90% original blue remaining. Case colors are fading with bright colors in protected areas. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright and clean. Grips show modest wear. All original, unmolested screws. Overall, a most attractive all original revolver. Not only is this a unique opportunity to acquire one of the highest quality Colt Single Actions ever produced. One of 244 assembled by Colt Master Gunsm
