FINE COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER

Lot # 189c (Sale Order: 177 of 571)

SERIAL NUMBER 93444, BARREL 8", CALIBER .44 WITH ORIGINAL ISSUED HOLSTER. 1860 fully martially marked revolver, manufactured in early 1863 at the peak of the Civil War. Standard military blue and case colors with brass trigger guard and iron back strap. Non- fluted cylinder roll engraved with Ormsby Naval Engagement scene. Matching serial numbers. Oil finished one piece walnut grips. Accompanied with undated family letter from Alan Everhart, a direct descendant of the original owner written to a Mr. Condon (likely noted dealer David Condon of Middleburg, Virginia) describing its family chain of ownership and provenance as originally being issued to Jacob Armstead Everhart. He also wrote that Jacob entered the Army on June 20, 1862 and was discharged due to a gun shot in his leg in April 1863. Upon research, his proper name was actually discovered to be Arm(i)stead Jacob Everhart who was a Union loyalist and soldier. He was a Captain in the 56th Virginia Militia during the period of John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry. His company was known as "Everhart's Company" and was composed of men from the Lovettsville area. In July 1861, after the outbreak of the Civil War, he marched 50 men of his company to Harper's Ferry under the Union banner, and volunteered to aid the Union cause. Immediately, they began guiding Union forces into Virginia. As leader of the resistance to secession in north Loudoun in the summer and fall of 1861, Everhart also testified at the military trials of a number of local residents, such as the outspoken secessionist Jonah Potterfield. In February 1862, he was offered a commission as a 2d Lieutenant in the 12th Virginia Infantry (Union), an unsuccessful effort to form a Unionist Eastern Virginia Brigade. In June, Sam Means was authorized to form the Loudoun Rangers. Everhart and other members of "Everhart's Company" mustered into Company A on June 20th of 1862, just as the letter states. The Rangers served as mounted partisans fighting their Confederate counterparts such as Mosby’s Rangers and other renegade bands in and around Loudoun, Virginia. Our research additionally confirms that Armistead Everhart was indeed shot through the right knee and captured on 9/2/62, being held prisoner in Winchester. His parole record states he was captured on or about Sept. 1862 and was at Camp Parole, Md. on Oct. 7. He was paroled a few days later and rejoined his troop. A medical certificate states his leg was shortened by two inches due to a compound fracture from a gunshot wound. Copies of his muster sheets show that Everhart was still present with his company but finally discharged in April, 1863 when deemed no longer fit for duty. He reportedly died in August of the same year due to this very wound. He certainly lost or surrendered his first issue revolver when captured. This revolver was obviously issued in early in ’63 upon his return to service and its light use accounts for its exceptional condition today. Original signed family letter as well as copies of Everhart’s muster rolls, prisoner of war record, certificate of disability discharge and regimental information from the National Archives included. CONDITION. Extremely fine and all original with barrel retaining 80% military blue, particularly strong on each side of the barrel lug as well as the barrel top and bottom. The sides of the round portion of the barrel are turning an untouched plum patina mixing with blue, likely from lying in its holster for many decades. Cylinder retains 30% blue with nice cylinder scene. The frame, hammer and loading lever show 80% case colors just beginning to tone but with generous amounts of vividness. Bore is bright and clean. Grips are very fine with nice cartouches. Action is crisp and locks up tight. Surfaces are excellent, showing few handling marks of any type. The holster exhibits fine leather finish but is missing its closing strap and its threaded seem is opened full length. A very fine and historic identified Colt 1860 Army revolver that was well cared for and the type collectors seldom find on today's market. ANTIQUE

NEAR NEW US COLT 1902 PHILLIPINE REVOLVER

Lot # 199 (Sale Order: 187 of 571)

SERIAL 49404. BARREL 6". CALIBER .45 COLT. This is arguably the finest known example of a US Colt Model 1902 revolver extant. In 1902, 4,600 Model 1878 revolvers were produced for a U.S. Army contract. They were intended to equip the Philippine Constabulary under Brigadier General Henry T. Allen in the Philippine Insurrection. These revolvers had 6-inch barrels, hard rubber grips, and were chambered for the .45 Colt round. They had strengthened mainsprings and longer triggers to give the user more leverage, resulting in larger trigger guards. The right side of the frame is stamped US 1902 with JTT inspector stamp. Left side of frame stamped RAC with Colt Pony in circle with RAC also stamped on trigger guard. There is a proof P under barrel. RAC is stamped on back cylinder along with 9404. Barrel has one line Colt address. Gun features high polish blue finish, niter blue trigger, screws and back of polished hammer. Grips are bird head style in gutta percha. Lanyard ring is case color. Six shot double action. Condition. Cylinder face does not show any real burn evidence, 97% bright factory blue. Niter blue is brilliant, even on grip screw. Grips are near mint. Action and bore are crisp. There is a minute hint of muzzle wear, light wear freckling on backstrap and a few freckles on top strap & cylinder. We examined several near mint examples that have sold and this is the nicest example we have seen. C&R DB
