PRESENTATION SABER TO FELIX G. MCCREA, 5TH ARKANSAS INFANTRY AND 7TH KENTUCKY CAVALRY.

Lot # 1027 (Sale Order: 27 of 763)

Elaborate Clauberg presentation sword and scabbard given to Felix G. McCrea, 7th Kentucky Cavalry. Clauberg swords are collected in their own right for the quality of their products and their blades were often used by American assemblers. The gilt hilt is deeply cast and chased with a prominent crouching eagle at top. The face of the pommel is covered with coils and scrolls with a slight silver wash at points. A faceless head of Columbia sits below the wreathed edge of the pommel cap. The grips feature a deeply cast and detailed standing Columbia with shield and wreath, with stars overhead on the obverse. On the reverse is a gilt display of arms among deep scrolls and floral designs. The counterguard, cast, chased, and engraved inside and out, features an eagle fighting a snake with a prominent US, the tail of the snake looping through the "U." The underside of the guard has a cup formed of feathers and talons that cover the scabbard throat. Blade has Clauberg logo at reverse ricasso, back of blade etched "Iron Proof." Floral, military and patriotic motifs on both sides of the blade with traces of gold wash at the base on each side. Obverse features 5" long panel with battle scene of lines of troops being lead against an enemy line at right. Cannons fire. Officers with swords are mounted. One center falls from his horse. Scabbard is steel with openwork brass middle mounts with floral cast rings. Shell fans extend from throat. Drag with floral engraving front and back. Applied panel with blank, round center panel and scrolling floral extensions. Scabbard is inscribed in six lines between the middle mounts in script and block lettering: "Presented to Felix G. McRea Adjutant of the 7th KY. Cav. the Friend, the Patriot and the Soldier by the line officers of his Regiment. Nashville Tenn. Sept. 27th 1863." McCrea enlisted at Louisville, KY, and was mustered in as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant in the 7th KY Cavalry 9/19/62. He was promoted to First Lieutenant and Adjutant 12/11/62. He was promoted to Captain of Co. G as of 11/21/64. He mustered out 7/10/65 with the regiment. The regiment served in the Department and Army of the Ohio and Cumberland and in the Military Division of the Mississippi. CWdata gives instances at which they were engaged with some loss. During their service they lost two officers and twenty-two enlisted men killed or mortally wounded. A Felix G. McCrea served in the Confederate service as a member of the 5th Arkansas Infantry from June 1861 until his desertion from the unit in May 1862. That regiment served in Kentucky and it seems likely this is the same man. If so, as a deserter who joined the enemy, he was fighting with a noose around his neck. In 1866 he joined the 8th US Cavalry and served for a year. He there listed his birthplace as Pennsylvania and his occupation as "soldier." There may be quite a story here. At the very least, the sword testifies that he was well respected by his new regiment. CONDITION: Excellent. Hilt preserves most of its gilt on the pommel, the interior and the face of the guard. Slight rubbing to brass along exterior of upper branch in counterguard. Blade frosting is thin, but designs are vivid. Traces of gold wash near ricasso. Openwork scabbard mounts are deeply cast and chased. Scabbard body is bright with scattered grey and a little dusting of brown. RARE U.S. MODEL 1860 NAVAL OFFICER'S CUTLASS WITH SCABBARD.

Lot # 1028 (Sale Order: 28 of 763)

Rare USN 1860 pattern (actually 1861 according to new research) cutlass with scalloped guard and die cut USN. Rankin guessed these might have been issued to petty officers and the like since some bear inspection marks and officers arms are privately purchased. The navy purchased and issued some 1852 pattern officer's swords, however, so there was likely a small batch of these that was similarly acquired, likely well under one hundred. This is one of those few, bearing not only an Ames scroll address and "U.S.N." over "1862," but also the inspector's initials "D.R." The pommel cap has a brass cap over the blade tang. The guard bears an incised line around the edge, around the edge of the pommel, and along the counterguard, coming to a point at the beginning of the knuckleguard. The shell guard bears slight traces of gilt in the bottom of the impressed lines. The scabbard correctly bears a star mark on the face of the bottom copper rivet. The frog is black bridle leather. CONDITION: Very good. Grip has leather and wire in good condition. Brass has an undisturbed mellow tone. Cup guard has dents overall. One small break in the brass border line of the diagonal stroke of the "N." One nick to exterior edge. Blade smooth, grey mixed with some dark grey areas. No nicks. Good point. Crisp markings. Scabbard very good. Some scuffs. Crazing to the finish, but only minor finish loss. One minor crease on obverse below stud. Tight seam. All rivets in place. Frog very good. A very scarce pattern, even more so with the inspector's initials. SR. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of George M. Rapport.Blade Length: 26"Overall Length: 32 - 1/2" Condition: Dimensions:

EXTRAORDINARY MOTHER OF PEARL GRIPPED OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SWORD.

Lot # 1030 (Sale Order: 30 of 763)

A seldom offered opportunity to acquire an outstanding sword. This sword follows the general configuration of an 1850 Staff and Field but with embellishments that put it in a class by itself. The gold washed and gilt brass hilt is deeply cast and expertly chased to emphasize details of the decorative elements. The pommel cap has a large bezel set red semi-precious stone in a border of stippled leaves. The underside of the cap bears engraved floral motifs and a separate band that may be applied. A silver backstrap and bottom strap on the grip bears overlapping scales that are mirrored in the superb mother of pearl grips, in which each scale is fitted with a gilt star appearing to fix it to the hilt. The ferrule is cast with geometric and floral elements. The knuckleguard is deeply cast with entwining vines and branches and a central four-sided "lantern" with red stone lenses or eyes, which are mirrored in the red stone eyes of the eagle head quillion atop the counterguard. The bottom of the knuckleguard ends in a leaf clasping five narrow branches descending from four open circles on the base of the counterguard. The counterguard is cast with openwork work floral motifs and a large "U.S." in Old English. There is a short, openwork folding inner guard. The underside of hilt has a flat rectangular panel from which an umbrella scabbard cap descends, worked with sections of feather textured channeled shells separated by talons and claws. The blade pad is in place. The reverse ricasso has the Clauberg trademark knight and firm name. A stand of arms, foliate scrolls and American eagle with curling drypoint etched E Pluribus Unum ribbon are etched in a gilt washed panel twelve inches long terminating in an Arabesque point. On the obverse the ricasso is blank. The etching moves from a stand of arms and foliate scroll to a blade motto reading "Union for ever" with flourishes and foliate scrolls, ending with a "US" in a floral scroll. All with gilt wash background. Scabbard is bright with deeply cast open work middle mounts, decorated on both sides, throat with floral lower edge and drag with geometric and floral motifs on both sides. The ring bands are scaled, reflecting the sword grip. The rings are roped. Between the ring mounts is a rope border oval that could hold a presentation silver plaque. CONDITION: Excellent. The blade shows some rubbing to the gilt wash on either ricasso, and a very slight rub at the tip of the lower martial stand of arms and upper tip of the arabesque finial of the etched panel on the reverse. Both are small and on the high lower edge of the fuller. Very small dark spot on blade tip obverse. Very narrow hairlines on three of the contoured branches descending from the counterguard where they join the knuckleguard. Only one comes through to the inside. All are stable. Gold wash and gilt of the hilt are bright. Underlying brass where exposed matches in polish. Scabbard and mounts bright, with no loss of detail. All in all a superb sword worthy of the best collection. (SR)Blade Length: 32"Overall Length: 38 - 3/4" Condition: Dimensions:

RARE AMES CORPS OF TOPOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERS CIVIL WAR SABER.

Lot # 1031 (Sale Order: 31 of 763)

Adopted in 1839 to mark the establishment of the Topographical Engineers as a separate organization from Engineer Corps, a separation that lasted until 1863. The organization was, small, elite, and intimately connected not just with the security of the country in the construction of forts and public works, but was crucial in the exploration of the American west and westward expansion of the country before the Civil War. The pattern is designed for field service, being a modification of the 1833 Dragoon Officer's Saber with a heavier scabbard, a fourth branch added to the reverse of the guard, and star-within-a-star cast in the quillon. Gilt coiled brass wire binding with sharkskin grip. Acorn and oak leaf design on the ferrule. Quill back blade, obverse etched with sunburst, N.P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield address, acorn and oak leaf scrolls, two displays of arms, lower with American shield, upper with pole and liberty cap, leafy vine terminates the etching with flame ends to the frosted panel. Reverse has sunburst at bottom, acorn and oak leaf scrolls, with "U.S. Topographical Engineers" etched in an oval panel with interior border of stars and terminating flames top and bottom. Overhead and American eagle with arrows and olive branch, drypoint etched E Pluribus Unum ribbon, with leafy vine overhead. Frosting terminates in flame points. Scabbard preserves gilt brass "TE" on US shield insignia at top below throat on obverse and gilt rectangular NP Ames maker plaque on reverse. CONDITION: Stellar. Scabbard is smooth metal, blue/brown in color, no dings or dents, just some very small brown age spots under the color and a tiny bit of freckling near the middle ring band. Rings, drag and throat in place. Gilt remaining on applied plaques. Hilt with bright gilt on brass. Gilt brass pommel cap hiding blade tang and nut are in place. Grip wrap and binding are superb. Blade frosting is very good and the etching is vivid. Blade pad in place. The Engineers consistently drew from the top of the class at West Point and were a small, elite group, and their arms are correspondingly rare. Lee and McClellan both started their careers in that branch of service. This is a very scarce sword in wonderful condition that would be near impossible to equal, let alone surpass, and is connected to a significant period of American history. A high point in any collection. (SR)Blade Length: 32 - 3/4"Overall Length: 38" Condition: Dimensions:
