CIVIL WAR ESCUTCHEON FROM A U.S. MARINE ON BOARD U.S.S. CONGRESS FIGHTING THE MERRIMAC!

Lot # 1101 (Sale Order: 101 of 523)

Extremely rare service escutcheon of Civil War U.S. Marine Robert Brunt (1834-1909,) on the U.S.S. Congress in March 1862 when it fought the CS Ironclad Virginia, formerly the U.S.S. Merrimac. These armorial service records were popular among Civil War veterans, but those for Marines are extremely rare, and none more than for a leatherneck with an active combat record and who fought the Merrimac. The format is standard, with American eagle over a wreathed shield with the individual’s name in scroll at bottom, but with the seal of the Navy Department instead of a state at center, and appropriate branch insignia. Brunt’s service record is filled out by hand in gold on the three gold-bordered red arms that divide the blue shield. In summary, he enlisted in the USMC as a private in Philadelphia 20 August 1861, was assigned to the USS Congress at the end of February and in the famous battle of March 8. The ship was battered by the Confederate ironclad and her consorts and was aground and on fire when her magazine exploded. Over one hundred of the crew were killed, including the ship’s commander. Blunt did duty at the Navy Yard in Washington at various points, mixed with active service on the sloop of war “Port Royal,” service on James River and in the attack on Fort Darling, in the Marine Battalion at Cairo, Ill., and Fernandia, Fl.; on board sloop of war “Keystone State” and in ironclad attack at Charleston January 1863; in the night attack on Fort Sumter in August; in the assault on Fort Fisher in December and duty in the “experimental battery” below Washington. He was discharged 24 August 1865. A native of New Jersey and painter by profession, he lived in Woodstown when he enlisted, and Somerville from 1868 to his death in 1909. CONDITION: Excellent. Vibrant color. Matted, framed and ready to hang. Civil War U.S. Marine material is very scarce.

LOT OF 2: FRAMED MILITARY PRINTS OF STONEWALL JACKSON BY KUNSTLER

Lot # 1102 (Sale Order: 102 of 523)

Lot consists of two military prints by Kunstler, framed and ready to hang. A) “’Until We Meet Again.’ Jackson’s Headquarters Winchester VA. Winter 1862.” Jackson says farewell to his wife as he leaves his headquarters of the Valley District in March 1862 for his famous Valley Campaign. A fire-lit snowy scene. The building today houses a museum devoted to Jackson. B) “’General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson’ Winchester Va May 25, 1862.” Citizens of Winchester welcome Jackson and his troops after his defeat of Union General Nathaniel Banks. Jackson remarked, “I do not remember having seen such rejoicing… the people seemed nearly frantic with joy…” Jackson’s victory diverted even more Union troops from McClellan’s advance on Richmond and gave Banks the unflattering nickname of “Commissary Banks” for the huge amount of supplies abandoned to Confederate forces. CONDITION: Both prints are excellent, professionally framed and matted with brass plaques at lower edge. Both are signed by Kunstler at lower margin with issue serial number. SR

LOT OF 4: FRAMED SIGNATURES FROM THE FOUR COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC

Lot # 1110 (Sale Order: 110 of 523)

Lot consists of framed signatures of the four commanders of the Army of the Potomac matted with engraved portraits: (A) “your friend Geo. McCellan,” a postwar letter matted to show signature. (B) Joseph Hooker, “J. Hooker Maj Genl.” (C) “Geo. G. Meade / Maj. Gen. of Vols. / Comdr. AP” (D) “Sincerely yours A.E. Burnside.” All four are nicely framed blue and red mats with gold highlights and engraved portraits in uniform. McClellan was relieved for many reasons, in part from inactivity after Antietam. Burnside ordered the failed, bloody assaults at Fredericksburg. Hooker started well, but lost the initiative at Chancellorsville. Meade failed to finish Lee’s army after Gettysburg, but there was no arguing with victory. Grant, however, did come east to supervise things closely in 1864. This is a nicely presented collection with focus on the eastern theatre of the Civil War. SR

US 40 STAR FLAG

Lot # 1121 (Sale Order: 121 of 523)

US 40 Star Flag circa 1889. These flags are quite rare, as most people anticipated North Dakota and South Dakota to be inducted as the 39th state, instead of two states which resulted in a larger scale production of 39 star flags. After the induction of the Dakotas, there was an adjustment to make 40 star flags, however 6 days later Montana officially became a state and rendered 40 star flags obsolete. Due to this rapid expansion of the United States, very few 40 star flags exist. The flag is made of wool bunting and measures approximately 99" x 56". The hoist has three metal grommets, one on each end and one at the center. The hoist is marked with the name "H.M. Sener" and according the consigner the flag was acquired from the William Sener estate. Sener was a wealthy businessman who resided in the Lancaster, Pa. area. CONDITION: The flag displays several holes and the bottom right corner has a patched repair. The colors remain vibrant and the flag displays well. Overall very good. JD
