Lot of 2 mounts for the classic Japanese glaive. Black lacquer shafts with golden inlaid florals, tendrils, and Tokugawa crest. Engraved brass furniture with gold roped sections on shaft. Iron half moon crescent butts. CONDITION: Very good, with some age related chips and rubs. Brass with a rich patina grey patina. A nice set. EW

JAPANESE YARI ON POLE.

Classically formed Japanese straight headed spear with lightening fuller on largest flat side that has been filled with red lacquer. Cutting edges with suguha hamon. Head mounted in shirasaya mounts. Nakago with one mekugi-ana. Pole of more recent manufacture with cord wrap and red lacquer paint on top half, stained wood on bottom half. Black lacquer saya. CONDITION: Very good, blade is in good polish with some scattered openings, mostly towards tip. Nakago has a small split that runs diagonally into the nakago. Saya is good with some marks and rubbing throughout. Pole is good with some marks throughout and some chipping of lacquer. A nice example of a yari. EW

A JAPANESE SODEGARAMI POLEARM.

Lot # 1029 (Sale Order: 29 of 523)      

Of distinct form with a pointed tip and numerous hooks and barbs to entangle sleeves and clothes. These polearms were used to arrest suspected criminals entangling their clothing, primarily sleeves, at which point they could be disarmed or otherwise managed. Mounted on a red lacquered pole. CONDITION: Very good. Straps are lifting away from wood in a few areas and have one break. Forged iron construction has normal forging flaws throughout. Points seem stable, with one missing near break in strap.

YOROI DOSHI ARMOR PIECING DAGGER WITH SHIRASAYA AND SAMURAI MOUNTS, DATED EISHO PERIOD.

Lot # 1030 (Sale Order: 30 of 523)      

Kanmuri-Otoshi-zukuri blade form with a rather lazy notare hamon. Well cut horimono on right of double incised lines and characters. Silver foil horizontally scratched habaki. Mekugiana of a slightly elongated form and more appropriate to a spear, possibly a remount. Nakago is signed and dated for Eisho period, making this quite old. Mounts comprise a brown painted saya with simple kojiri that shows remanants of gilding, kurigata decorated with florals and accented with gilding, and a kozuka depicting three playing shishi dogs. Tsuba relieved for kozuka, fuchi decorated with florals, menuki depicting more shishi dogs, and kashira decorated en suite with fuchi. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is in good polish withsome very minor scattered openings and shitetsu. Shirasaya are very good, samurai mounts are very good with some chipping to paint and age related rubbing. Kurigata shows evidence of having been reattached at once point to saya. A very good yoroi doshi with good mounts. EW

Mounted in plain shirasaya mounts. Made from a naginata blade that has been reshaped and mounted as a wakizashi, with distinctively cut hi and bo-hi. Nakago is unsigned. Silver catscratch habaki. Vivid and flowy choji hamon line with several tobi-yaki, some of which jump the shinogi. Attractive nie. CONDITION: Excellent, in nearly full polish with one microchip to blade and infinitesimal chip at kissaki and a few extremely minor dotted openings in steel, most towards habaki. Shirasaya with minor marks. Accompanied by NBTHK green paper. A really wonderful example. EW

Ubu nakago with rather long o-kissaki. Attractive gunome hamon line with copper habaki. Iron tsuba with inlaid silver and shakudo dragonflies and flowers. Fuchi with a more subdued version of the design featuring dragonfly tail and golden body and head, kashira with golden dragonfly. Menuki in the form of a double headed scepter. Saya with copper colored sageo and brown lacquer kurikata. Kojiri with silver and copper inlaid dragonflies. CONDITION: Blade is very good in good polish, with 2 micro chips to blade and some scattered ware throughut. Mounts are crisp with some age related discoloration. Saya is very good, koiguchi appears to have been painted with some kind of blackening agent, as has body. Koijiri commensurate with balance of mounts. A great blade with wonderful mounts. EW

Ubu nakago with spurious Nagamitsu signature. Notare hamon line with long waves and itame hada. Gilt copper habaki. Beaded fuchi and kashira with copper gilt ridges. Menuki in to the of double crowned orbs. Attractive saya with single hanger loop, koiguchi, koijiri, and semegane en suite with fuchi-kashira. Rayskin wrap has pulled away from fuchi somewhat, exposing bare wood. CONDITION: Very good with nicely visible hamon line, some minor openings and a couple more spots of shintetsu. No discernible chips in blade. Saya is very good with some chips, hanger is a possible replacement replacement as design is not en suite with balance of mounts. A good blade with good mounts.

Shinogi zukuri blade with suguha hamon and Komaru boshi. Ubu nakago with single mekugi-ana. Kiri yasurime. Itame hada. Mounted in shirasaya resting mounts. While unsigned, the NTHK certification attributes the blade to Hosokawa Masamori and dated to late Edo period, 1848. Cross beaded gilt habaki. During the certification the sword received 70 points, earning it a Kanteisho origami, which is included. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is in good polish with some scattered ware and dotted openings. Blade has no chips to cutting edge. Mounts are very good. Kanteisho papered swords are very good and a step above the "guarantee of authenticity" origami. EW

Ubu nakago with second mekugi-ana added when blade was remounted that damaged two character signature, reads "Munehisa". Tsuba pierced through with stylized waves, silver and brass clams, and birds. Hole for kozuka left over from previous mounts. Underside of seppa signed. Fuchi with gilt and silver florals on beaded background. Menuki in the form of samurai in armor. Kashira with a shishi dog amongst a floral bed. Mounts of a more recent vintage. Shirasaya cover of a rich brown with copper colored trees, golden leaves and avians, and silver cranes. CONDITION: Very good. Blade is in good polish with several areas of ware and shintetsu, including alone mune line. Mounts are very good, tsuba with distinct sunburst pattern. Fuchi, kahira and menuki are very good and attractive. Cover is good. Saya and shirasaya good.

Housed in a beautiful pine lacquer scabbard with abalone dots that add to the overall look. Kozuka signed. Ubu nakago with single mekugi-ana with "Kanemoto" signature. Katte agari yasurime. CONDITION: Excellent. Blade is in excellent polish with some scattered minor areas of shintetsu. Hamon runs off blade near habaki. Mounts are excellent, fuchi and kashira polished. Tsuba has some gilting left in protected areas. Saya is very good with a few normal bumps and chips, and some discoloration near koijiri that may clean. Mounted in shirasaya resting mounts with horn escutcheon around mekugi and mekugi koguchi. Accompanied by NBTHK authentication papers. CONDITION: Blade is in good polish with nicely visible hada and some scattered shintetsu and ware. Three openings in the steel underneath the habaki. Mounts are very good. Hira zukuri blade form with vivid choji hamon and mokume hada. Copper habaki with catscratching on front and rear. Housed in shirasaya resting mounts. CONDITION: Very good. Some scatteerd shintetsu and minor dotted openings. One or two small ware lines. Mounts are very good. A wonderful example of a great tanto.

JAPANESE SAMURAI SWORD PRESENTED TO OFFICER IN 1937 WITH EXTENSIVE TANG INSCRIPTION..

Japanese sword in Shin-Gunto army officer's mounts with a blade measuring 25-3/4", wavy temper line and silver engraved habaki. Tang with sword smith's signature reading "Hizen (no) Kuni Ju Yoshitsuga". This older sword was presented to a departing officer in 1937 and the left tang reads, in two lines: "Presented to Mr Masaura By The Residents Of This Town With Deep Appreciation In 1937. Oura Township Sage Prefecture". CONDITION: Blade is mostly bright with a few cloudy areas and exhibiting a number of scattered edge nicks becoming heavier near the tip. Handle is missing all fittings and grip lace. Scabbard exhibits about 75% original brown paint and retains a 7" section of the leather covering. Although the condition of the blade leaves much to be desired, it is extremely uncommon to encounter a Japanese sword with a presentation on the tang. DG

Tehen with petal and geometrics. Medial ridge of copper decorated with floral lining and punch dot ridge. Maedate tongue. 69 iron plates with liner attachment and holes for protruding rivets. Delicate fukigaeshi with floral crest and cloth wrapped with two designs separated by cord. Mabizashi with roped top border, 3 brass rivets, and 4 lacquered rivets. Three lame shikoro bound with blue cord and with multicolor cord at edges, bottom off white decorative cord. Hanger at rear of hachi. Decorative brass rivets around koshimaki. Interior of mabizashi with red lacquer. Blue liner with blue stitching and edged by a relatively plain yellow and white band. Green affixing cord. Maedate engraved with florals and geometrics, with stylized central ken with flanking horns. Menpo of iron with horsehair moustache with gilded teeth and red lacquered lips. Brown lacquer facepiece. Neckpiece articulated in three pieces and made of lacquered iron with brown affixing cord and two strips of decorative multicolor and orange cord. Nosepiece detachable, cheek hooks vacant. CONDITION: Very good. Metal has some minor areas of old patina that does not detract. Fukigaeshi with some age related staining and wear. Brass pieces have acquired a nice untouched mustard patina. Shikoro is very good, with a few spots where it appears cord was carefully repaired with glue. Affixing cord a possible replacement. Liner is very good, edging is starting to peel somewhat and has two old (period?) repairs. Menpo is very good with a couple areas of chipping and rubibng, but nothing significant. One crack at right side of nose piece. Cord is fraying, exercise caution. EW

Made with 32 plates of forged iron construction, covered in black lacquer with raised ridge lines gilded. Tehen with floral designs on punch dot background. Slot for maedate is vacant. Mabizashi with raised relief geometrics. Fukigaeshi with family crest on stippled gilt ground. Shikoro of four lames make of gilded iron and bound with cord. Blue liner appears to be of same period of helmet. Red affixing cord also appears to be of period. No signature observed. Black lacquered menpo with copper teeth. Horsehair moustache and goatee. Red lacquer lips and interior. Neck guard of gilded iron and bound with blue cord. CONDITION: Good, with some chipping to lacquer and gilding throughout and some areas of gilding that have cracked but not lifted yet. Exercise caution. Lacquer has a couple of areas that have chipped, and cracks in mabizashi. Liner has one minor tear in it. Menpo is very good, with some minor chipping to lacquer. Goatee is missing much of the horse hair. Some chipping and cracking to gilding on neckguard. This is a great example of the Japanese helmet as it later evolved, with smaller fukigaeshi and a raised rear bowl to better fit the head. EW

Brown lacquered mabizashi with two visible rivets and maedate clip. Maedate made of brass and in the form of stylized flames with engraving along median. Large fukigaeshi with pierced tomoe crest. Shikoro of three lames made of iron and lacquered en suite, bound with blue and tan cord. Interior of shikoro gilded, interior of mabizashi with reddish lacquer. Liner with stylized cloth edging and simple point pattern of teal on tan. Iron menpo with horsehair moustache and goatee, gilt copper teeth, and brown lacquer coating. Attachment hooks on check are vacant, nosepiece is removable. Yodare-kake of gilded iron and bound by blue cord with two strips of decorative orange and cord at bottom. Interior and upper lip in an orange lacquer. Woven orange, white, and green affixing cord. Menpo likely associated as the pattern of the guard and the lacquer does not match quite right. CONDITION: Very good. Kabuto hachi with a few spots of age related patination that do not detract. Tubular top piece is loose and could be reaffixed. Shikoro is very good with traces of original lacquer mostly in protected areas. Lacquer has some minor chipping throughout as to be expected of age. Menpo is very good, much of the horsehair goatee is missing but moustache is still quite full. Teeth with traces of gilding in protected areas. One cord broken but could be repaired. Some cracking to gilding. A really nice example in good condition. EW

Base of bottom lame also decorated with tan and multicolored cord. Insides of mabizashi, fukigaeshi, and shikoro all decorated with red lacquer. Liner with edge decorated en suite with fukigaeshi. Liner appears to be original. Affixing off white cord. CONDITION: Very good. Right fukigaeshi has been reattached with a generous application of silver solder. Bowl has a couple minor spots of age related spotting that does not detract. Brass has acquired a deep patina. Shikoro is very good with a few very minor breaks in the cord and some rubbing to gilding. Interior lacquer has some chipping. Mabizashi with three rivets and maedate slot, filled with brass maedate in the form of a diamond tipped sword with flanking flames and gilded on interior. Fukigaeshi with black lacquer and edged with gilt lines and three diamonds. Cruciform knot on hanger at back of hachi. Three lame black lacquered shikoro bound with blue cord and brown lacquered on interior in a cracked ice pattern. Liner with felt lining that is peeling under mabizashi. Hanpo with deep brown lacquer and three lame yodare-kake bound with the same style of blue cord as found on kabuto, edges bound in multicolor blue and offwhite cord. Dou of do-maru configuration and lacquered in black, with a mixture of foliage green and deep blue cord, opening under right arm and wrapped in leather on interior. Cloth covers under shoulder straps. Kusazuri lacquered en suite, and wrapped in leather on interior. Sode, kote, cuisse skirt, and greaves black lacquered and covered with chainmail and small iron plates over green foliage cloth and internally lined in deep blue cloth. Housed in a wooden travel box with iron bands and tabs, kamon painted on, and rudimentary latch. CONDITION: Very good with some expected chipping and rubbing to high edges as one would expect from a piece of this age. Some minor separations in the cloth, but nothing serious. Do possibly relacquered at one point, possibly period. Leather has some losses, mostly to lames but scattered throughout. Do has numerous little scratches, sode, lote, cuisse skirt, and greaves and some staining on cloth and patina on metal. Given the construction, cord, and form of the piece, it is likely that this piece is homogenous. EW

Maedate of lacquered wood to prevent a poorly weighted helmet. Shikoro of four lames, bound with light red cord and constructed of gilded iron. Red cruciform knot attached to hanger at rear of hachi. Mabizashi in black lacquer en suite with hachi. Cloth wrapped fukigaeshi in floral patterns. Liner appears original. Interior of shikoro gilded. Mempo of iron construction with red lacquer interior and browned exterior. Yodare-kake of iron with gilding and bound by tan cord with black lacquer interior. Dou chestpiece of gilded iron with top collar with floral printed cloth wrap; scales and articulated pieces affixed by light red cords, armor piece affixed with horn tabs. Central silver cloud motif with cruciform knot. Bottom on armor engraved with wind motifs. Left and right wings articulated. Kusazuri of gilt leather. Interior cloth wrapped with gilding. Dou backpiece of gilded iron with cloth wrapped articulated collar in floral pattern en suite with chestpiece. Slot for standard of forged iron and black lacquered. Armored skirt en suite with chestpiece, with a few strips of iron as some lames are ferromagnetic. Associated tassets (sode) of gilded iron with orange cord binding and a golden cloth interior lined with blue stripes. Cuisse skirt, armguards ending in gauntlets (kote), and greaves of a light forest green with chainmail reinforced by sections of gilt iron. Green cloth (silk?) with simple birds and floral patterns. Housed in a wooden travel case with no markings but banded in iron. Also included is a neckpiece that appears to be of Chinese manufacture with engraved brass tabs, with 2 lame neck defense bound with orange cord and decorated with further orange cord and multicolored black, red, and offwhite cord. CONDITION: Good. Some chipping to gilding throughout and some minor losses. Some pieces, especially some cords, have broken with time and been either repaired or replaced. Maedate of a more modern construction that balance of armor, which appears to be Edo period, with exception given to Chinese neckpiece. Travel case has two replaced trims with visible wood glue from repairs. Silk has some separations, mostly across backing. Given the varying styles, it is possible that the armor is made of composite pieces, but extremities obviously from the same suit, as is dou. A nicely presenting set. EW
