DOUBLE DISK AMERICAN NAVAL CUTLASS 1797 PATTERN OR EARLIER

Lot # 1052 (Sale Order: 52 of 523)

This unmarked double disk naval cutlass follows an English pattern in use on British warships and in the colonies since the mid-1700s. The blade is straight, single edged with spear point and narrow fuller running along the back edge from the guard and tapering out near the false edge. The hilt is iron, with forged one-piece guard having a broad oval disk on knuckleguard and one forming counterguard, topped with flat, rolled quillon. Blade tang is crudely peened. Grip is rolled iron showing peening dents. Hilt is japanned black. British versions are often designated the “pre-1804 pattern.” The 1797 designation for American versions derives from the re-establishment of the navy and contract cutlasses for it that are similar in form, but marked. This is unmarked and a commercial product for a privateer or merchant vessel arms chest. The lack of a ricasso may indicate an earlier production date. The same form is used in the American Revolution and known to have been occasionally issued to land troops in need of arms. CONDITION: Very good. Blade gray with some dark gray and brown areas. Good edge and point. Minor chips and losses to the black painted hilt. SR

BOWIE KNIFE EBONY HANDLE ATTRIBUTED TO SAMUEL JACKSON (BALTIMORE).

Lot # 1060 (Sale Order: 60 of 523)

Bowie knife attributed to American maker Samuel Jackson of Baltimore, MD. Goins Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings states that Mr. Jackson is first listed in the city directory in 1833. He is listed in 1840 to 1851 as a "surgical instrument maker." In 1855 and 1856 as a "cutler". This company manufactured "Bowie" type knives, among other kinds of cutlery. This knife has the style of Mr. Jackson's Bowie Knife Works (ebony pinned handle, and appearance). It boasts a 10-1/2" upswept blade, obviously showing skill and style in form of manufacture of both surgical instruments and Bowie Knife makers combined. This is a real killer knife in all respects. c. 1850. Sheath is a 20th century add on, but fits knife well and gives good appearance.

LARGE MEXICAN WAR-ERA LION POMMEL BOWIE BY TILLOTSON

Lot # 1061 (Sale Order: 61 of 523)

This rare and desirable Mexican War-era bowie by Sheffield’s Tillotson & Co. features frame handle construction with ivory scales and nickel silver trim including a large flat S-guard and coffin shaped pommel with reclining lions in relief on each side. The wide clip point blade is marked on its ricasso TILLOTSON COLUMBIA PLACE SHEFFIELD and the blade’s face is etched with a scene that contains a spread-winged eagle perched atop a cannon amidst stars and military flags surrounded by foliate scrollwork and in script, “THE LAND OF THE FREE & THE HOME OF THE BRAVE” as well as “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. No sheath. c.1847-1850. Tillotson produced many large and fine quality bowies of this general style during the Gold Rush era and its is apparent that the patriotic motif of this etching preceded those knives. U.S. DRAGOON 1850 PATTERN SADDLE HOLSTERS

Lot # 1072 (Sale Order: 72 of 523)

Standard issue pommel holsters for single pistols carried by U.S. dragoons in the early west. These conform to the 1850 pattern saddle holsters for the single shot M1842 pistols, but will accommodate 1836 flintlocks if carried loaded and primed, so some collectors date them earlier. They are constructed of black leather joined by a pommel strap with a hole to fit over the saddle pommel, and with formed covers fastening by latch tabs over a brass stud. Small loops are sewn to the sides to secure them to the saddle. A soft leather pouch with cover and five tin tubes for pistol paper cartridges is sewn the body of each holster. These are protected as well by the outer flap when fastened. CONDITION: Excellent. Just slight wear to the finish of the pommel strap from flexing and one short edge tear. One tie-down loop missing. Fancy militia or officer’s pommel holsters are not uncommon. Plain sets for enlisted mounted men are scarce. Perfect for an early cavalry display or collection devoted to the pre-Civil War army on the western plains. SR

LOT OF 3: MAJOR GENERAL HENRY A. BARNUM SHOWS OFF HIS WOUND, SURGEON KEPI, AND CRUTCH

Lot # 1075 (Sale Order: 75 of 523)

Lot consists of three items including a very telling photo showing the lasting personal effects of the war on one officer. Barnum (1833-1892) was Major of the 12th NY Volunteers when wounded severely in the left hip at Malvern Hill in 1862. He was captured, eventually released, and recovered enough to become colonel of the 149th New York, commanding it at Gettysburg and in the Atlanta Campaign, and having brigade command in the March to the Sea. He was injured again at Lookout Mountain and at Peach Tree Creek, won the Medal of Honor for bravery in the battles around Chattanooga, and received brevets to brigadier and major general. He is shown in this photo lifting his major general’s frock coat to show a cord passed through his 1862 wound, caused by a bullet entering to the left and below his navel, passing through his hip bone, and emerging at the back, leaving a track through his torso that never fully healed and troubled him for thirty years with chronic infections. This copy of the image was likely made in the 1890s and comes with a faded typewritten one-page biographical summary signed in ink by his eldest son, Morgan K. Barnum. This is lotted with two medical items: a circa 1890 cap with insignia reading “M.E.H.” and “Surgeon,” and a period wood crutch that could conceivably be Civil War era and possibly military, but are not directly related to Barnum. CONDITION: Very good, but with fading to the statement by Barnum’s son. SR
