Lot # 1175 (Sale Order: 175 of 523)

Lot consists of: A) Gymnastyorka or Russian military smock first taken into use by all branches of the Imperial Russian Army at the time of the Russo-Turkish War. Originally intended as a fatigue dress, the gymnastyorka was subsequently adopted for ordinary duties and active service wear. This fine example is probably for an officer or NCO and displays all of the classic features of a military gymnastyorka, being a pullover with placket breast opening, with a standing collar with two button-closure, two breast pockets with flaps, and cross-straps on the shoulders for the mounting of shoulder boards or epaulets. It is made of a bluish-green, worsted serge, machine-sewn with fine, hand-finishing and worked buttonholes. It bears a military tailor’s or clothier’s stamp in black ink inside the inner rear tail with an oval outline, bearing in Cyrillic text, partially decipherable as follows: “BY ORDER OF THE GENERAL STAFF / [the firm name in italics] KRASILNIKOV 1916.” CONDITION: Very good for age. Showing only light wear. B) A scarlet or red forage cap with narrow, off-white or pale buff-colored piping around its crown, with white linen lining. An oval cockade or device is affixed to the front that appears to be that of the Tsarist or Imperial Russian Army, being a serrated, white edging around alternating green and orange bands. CONDITION: Good with note to a few small random holes in the wool from old insect browse.
