ID'D WWII USMC UNIFORM AND EPHEMERA GROUPING

Lot # 1209 (Sale Order: 209 of 523)

Nice small USMC uniform and ephemera grouping that is ID'D to Warren Reginald Lemoi. The group consists of various uniform pieces and paperwork, along with a copy of a 10 page hand written autobiography that Lemoi wrote in order to record his memories in the Marines. The lot includes Lemoi's forest green "Alpha" uniform set with tunic, pants, khaki shirt, overseas hat, gaiters, and belt. Lemoi's tunic exhibits an FMF-PAC Anti-Aircraft Artillery Patch and five ribbon bars. The tunic and pants are both unnamed and are dated 1944. The belt is named to J.L. Arne but was with Lemoi's memorabilia. There are also a few pieces of headgear, including a "Daisy Mae" hat named to Lemoi, a forest green cover named to Lemoi, khaki overseas hat, also named, unnamed green navy hat, and a pith helmet named to "George A. Bradley S/Sgt. USMC". Also included are 3 medals, one is a USMC Good Conduct Medal that is engraved to Lemoi. There is also a duffle bag that is named to Lemoi which has nice denim reinforcement pads sewn to the bottom. The paperwork mostly includes service certificates, discharge papers, post war VA information, a letter signing over a 1939 Buick 3 passenger coupe that Lemoi purchased for 650 dollars after he returned home, and much more. There is also a small newspaper clipping that reads "Corporal Lemoi suffered shrapnel wounds in the left thigh, chest and hand while in action on an undisclosed island in the Pacific last April." It appears his wounds were suffered when he was defusing Japanese 25MM shells when one detonated. The short autobiography completes the group and it is a very interesting read. Lemoi starts out by talking about how he left high school at 17 to join the Marines, and he goes on to talk about "guarding prisoners and hunting Japs". Some details are colorful and humorous, as he writes about camp life and duties and then jumps right into talking about "On all these Jap hunts we never left any Japs alive". This is a very nice grouping all attributed to one Marine. CONDITION: Paper items exhibit slight rips and tears but are nicely preserved. Uniform pieces, headgear, and duffle bag exhibit slight stains and wear typical of old military uniforms. Overall very good. JD

EXTENSIVE WWII USMC FATHER AND SON UNIFORM AND EPHEMERA GROUPING

Lot # 1212 (Sale Order: 212 of 523)

This is an extensive WWII USMC grouping that is primarily named to Leo Albert Desotell Jr. with contents from his father, Leo Desotell Sr. and other relatives. The group consists of various uniform pieces, headgear, field gear, captured Japanese equipment, and four envelopes of paperwork. The lot includes Leo Deotell Jr.'s forest green "Alpha" uniform with tunic, pants, overseas hat, and overcoat. The tunic and pants are named to Desotell Jr., while the overcoat is named to B.B. Thompson, however it has matching insignia to the tunic. There is a pair of dress blue trousers which are also named to Desotell Jr. The headgear includes an M1 front seam fixed bale helmet with liner and camouflage mosquito net cover named to G.G. Wheeler, an unnamed spare M1 helmet liner with ghost outline of an EGA, and two pith helmets, one named to Desotell Sr. and the other named to Desotell Jr. The field gear includes a USMC M1923 cartridge belt marked "Boyt 43" named to Mike Desotell, two pistol belts, and a M1911 holster with "Sgt. Desotell U.S. Marines" written under the flap. There is also a salty canteen and mess kit. The Japanese equipment consists of a canteen and cartridge box with small wood jar. The four envelopes of paperwork include documents relating to both Desotell Sr. and Desotell Jr. One envelope contains Desotell Jr.'s discharge paper along with captured Japanese ephemera. Another contains Desotell Sr.'s paperwork including discharge papers, service papers, medical documents stating he fractured his foot at Paris Island, and a 5th Marine Division book. The third envelope contains documents relating to Desotell Jr.'s service including rifle score books, newspapers, and other ephemera. The last envelope contains modern printed photos that show the father and son together in uniform during the war. There is also a disc in this envelope which could be digital copies of the photos. Leo Desotell Jr. was attached to C Battery, Heavy AAA Group, 7th AAA Battalion, 5th Marine Amphibious Corps. It appears Leo Desotell Sr. was in the Marines prior to WWII and reenlisted in the USMCR to serve for the duration of national emergency. Almost every item in this group is named to either Leo Desotell Jr. or Leo Desotell Sr. CONDITION: Uniforms are very clean, with almost no signs of blemishes or mothing, there are dry cleaning tags on some of the clothing articles. Overall very good-excellent. The headgear displays tarnishing and blemishes from overseas use, condition ranges from fair-very good. Field gear displays blemishes from wear and use. Overall good-very good. Ephemera items exhibit rips, tears, and creases that are typical of old paper. Condition ranges from fair-very good. This is a very well documented "time capsule" grouping which is even rarer due to the fact that it is identified to a father and son who both served in the Marine Corps during World War II. JD

ID'D WWII USMC P41 FATIGUE SET

Lot # 1213 (Sale Order: 213 of 523)

Salty WWII P41 fatigue jacket and trousers. The jacket and trousers are both stamped on the back "H.A. Hardison" along with "4" and "11 B" which flank the stamp of an amtrac. There is also a "4" stamped on the left breast of the jacket. The set seems to be attributed to Hubert A. Hardison, who enlisted in the Marines on March 3, 1942 and became a 2nd Lieutenant in Co. B, 10th Amphibious Tractor Battalion (AMTRAC) 4th Marine Division. The 10th AMTRAC Battalion served on Kwajalien, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima. The 4 on the jacket and trousers most likely relates to the 4th Marine Division, and the B for Company B, however it is unknown if Hardison had a temporary assignment with the 11th Amphibious Tractor Battalion since "11" is also stamped on the back of the jacket and trousers. CONDITION: The set only retains 3 of its original metal USMC buttons, 2 on the left sleeve and 1 on the right. The others are mismatched plastic buttons. The trousers retain all of their metal USMC buttons but have repairs at the bottom of the legs. The jacket's USMC pocket stamp is barely visible. The set exhibits color fading and staining. This is a nice ID'D USMC fatigue set that was most likely worn in major campaigns and definitely has a "been there" look. Overall fair. JD

ID'D WWII USAAF 98TH BOMB GROUP A-2 FLIGHT JACKET

Lot # 1217 (Sale Order: 217 of 523)

Great WWII USAAF Type A-2 flight jacket that was worn by Staff Sergeant Walter Marsh who was a tail gunner on a B-24 in the 98th Bomb Group, 345th Bomb Squadron. Marsh is mentioned in an interview with Dean Gillham who was the ball turret gunner on Marsh's B-24. During the interview there is no particular information revealed about Marsh except that as of 2012 he and Gillham were the last two survivors of their crew. The 98th Bomb Group started the war attached to the 9th Air Force and would later be attached to the 12th Air Force and finally the 15th Air Force when it was inactivated in 1945. During the war, the 98th BG accumulated an impressive combat record which included several notable missions in the ETO including the Ploesti raid. The exterior of the jacket displays wonderful features including a leather name strip that is stitched to the left breast that reads “S/Sgt W. Marsh”. Underneath the name strip is a beautiful Italian made 98th Bomb Group patch. The hand painted patch is embossed on leather and is in very good condition for its age, and it still has bright colors and crisp lines. The right breast of the jacket has an equally attractive Italian made patch that is also hand painted and embossed on leather. The patch depicts a multicolored map of Europe and is surrounded by 50 bombs denoting the missions that Marsh flew during his time in the 345th Bomb Squadron. The left shoulder has a nice Italian made 15th Air Force patch that like the others, is also hand painted and embossed on leather. The word “Connecticut” is printed on the top and the bottom scroll reads “98 Bomb Group”. There is ghost stitching on the right shoulder and it appears there was once an American flag patch sewn to the shoulder at one point. The jacket retains its original liner and specification tag. The tag has faded but reads "Type A-2 / Drawing No. 30-1415 / Order Bo. W535 A.C. 27798 / Property / Air Force U.S. Army / J.A. Dubow MFG. CO. Chicago, ILL. / 38”. The zipper is original and is marked “Talon”. There is no artwork on the back of the jacket, but it is still a very attractive display piece especially with the Italian made patches. Included with the jacket is a copy of a period photo of Marsh wearing what is undeniably the same jacket that was taken in Italy on April 2, 1945. CONDITION: The leather is a bit stiff but still pliable. There is some separation on the 98th Bomb Group patch as about 1/3 of the stitching has come loose. There is a tear on the left shoulder where it connects to the epaulette. There is a greenish paint stain to the lower back of the left arm. The cuffs and waistband appear to be original to the jacket and are in excellent condition. The leather does have slight cracking in typical areas. There are two sets of stitch holes around the patches on the chest indicating that the patches were once removed and later sewn back on the jacket. The interior of the jacket is in rough shape as the liner is heavily worn. There are several tears, probably from removing the jacket while wearing other flight gear and possible post war use. Overall a very nice ID'D A-2 jacket complete with a picture of the airman wearing the jacket during the war. JD

US WWII ID'D 449TH BOMB GROUP CATERPILLAR CLUB UNIFORM, PAPERWORK, AND PHOTO GROUPING

Lot # 1218 (Sale Order: 218 of 523)

Excellent World War II grouping attributed to Staff Sergeant Walter Ciesla, who was a B-24 tail gunner in the 449th Bomb Group, 718th Bomb Squadron. Ciesla was born on August 22, 1922 in Southbridge Massachusetts. In December 1943, he began his service by enlisting at Fort Devens, Ma. Ciesla became a member of the Army Air Forces and trained as a gunner aboard B-24 Liberators and was assigned to the 718th Bomb Squadron of the 449th Bomb Group. The 449th Bomb Group was attached to the 15th Air Force and was based in Italy throughout the war. Ciesla was assigned to the B-24 "My Achin' Back" piloted by George Mason. On September 12, 1944, "My Achin' Back" made an emergency landing on the beach near Loreto, Italy which was just south of the German lines. The plane was recovered and sent back into service. Despite the crash landing, Ciesla and the rest of Mason's crew continued to fly, but less than a month later they would be knocked out of the sky once more. On November 8, 1944 during a mission over Yugoslavia, Ciesla's B-24 suffered several direct hits by flak after releasing their bombs forcing the crew to bail out. For their actions during the mission Ciesla's pilot George Mason would be awarded the Silver Star, and Co-pilot Richard Slade would be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Excellent World War II grouping attributed to Staff Sergeant Walter Ciesla, who was a B-24 tail gunner in the 449th Bomb Group, 718th Bomb Squadron. Ciesla was born on Au...moregust 22, 1922 in Southbridge Massachusetts. Once on the ground, the crew was aided by partisans and avoided capture. Ciesla survived the war and passed away in January 2000.
