Pistols also appear on page 79 as item 46 plate XXVIII in the book Samuel Colt Presents and page 39 of Colt Engraving both by Wilson. PROVENANCE: William Locke Collection; Arnold Marcus Chernoff Collection. CONDITION: Revolvers are nearly identical in condition, both all matching except the wedge on #33633 is unnumbered. Cylinders retain virtually all of their bright orig blue and about 99% stagecoach hold-up scene roll markings. Cylinder on #33612 has a large “Z” shaped scratch. Trigger guards and backstraps retain virtually all of their orig silver plating with some minor edge wear. Top of the backstraps are engraved differently with #33612 having a fan pattern and #33633 leaf and geometric patterns. Trigger bows are engraved with small American shields and edges of the trigger guards are in feather patterns. All screw heads are nicely engraved. Hammers are deluxe engraved with a wolf’s head on each side of the hammer noses, fish scale patterns on the sides of the spurs and top edges. Accompanied by a beautiful brass bound rosewood casing that has a gold washed plaque in the lid, hand scratched “W. THOMSON / Canada 1851” Interior is dark blue velvet lined and compartmented in the bottom for both revolvers, a double sided eagle and shield pocket size flask, a brass twp cavity “COLTS PATENT” mold without sprue cutter, an “L” shaped nipple wrench, a lacquered tin for Eley’s caps, along with lead bullets and balls and a functioning key. This set is illustrated on page 73 of the book The Wm M. Locke Collection, Sellers. It appears that the mold and cap tin have been changed from this photograph, though they are from the period of this set. Both retain about 98% glossy original blue on the barrels and dark case colors on the rammers and handles. Frames retain most of their original muted case colors as is typical of the Colts of this era. Cylinders retain virtually all of their bright orig blue and about 99% stagecoach hold-up scene roll markings. Cylinder on #33612 has a large “Z” shaped scratch. Trigger guards and backstraps retain virtually all of their orig silver plating with some minor edge wear. Grips are sound with good edges and light nicks & scratches and retain most of their strong orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bores with a few small scattered spots of pitting. Case has a crack across the lid, otherwise is sound with handling and storage nicks and scratches and retains most of its orig varnish. Interior is lightly soiled inside the lid and bottom with light to moderate soil in the bottom. Partitions are all solid. Flask is as new. Mold is of the correct period with casting flaws in the brass, otherwise is extremely fine. Other accessories are equally fine. A truly spectacular set worthy of the most advanced collection. Accompanied by a letter from Arnold Chernoff dated 1985 describing these revolvers at time of his selling them. (A) METROPLITAN 1851 NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1239 (Sale Order: 239 of 637)

During the height of the American Civil War the Colt Manufacturing Co. suffered a serious tragedy. It started on February 4, 1864 when fire broke out destroying the Colt manufacturing plant in Hartford Connecticut. The devastating fire destroyed millions of dollars in inventory putting thousands of people out of work. The plant was only partially insured taking the next two years for Colt to go back into production. With the worst year of the Civil War ahead and the demand for revolvers remaining high, Colt's sudden departure left a big hole in the market for potential competitors to fill. To capitalize on the situation along came the Metropolitan Arms Company. The company located in New York took full advantage of Colt's missing product line by manufacturing near identical copies of the Colt Model 1851 Navy along with other Colt models. In a two year period from 1864-1866 Metropolitan produced approximately 6,000 copies of Colt's Model 1851 Navy. This example serial number 3289, has the typical 7-1/2 inch octagon barrel marked "Metropolitan Arms Co. New-York" on top flat. Chambered in .36 caliber, cylinder with roll die scene of the Battle of New Orleans. Blue with case hardened frame, loading lever, and hammer. Brass trigger guard and backstrap. One-piece varnished walnut grips. Matching serial numbers on all major parts. With exception of the cylinder roll die scene, it is a near identical copy of Colt's Model 1851 Navy. Walnut partition fitted case with correct unmarked bullet mold and powder flask. E. Remington marked percussion cap tin, and unmarked combination nipple wrench. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 90% plus original bright blue remaining on barrel and cylinder. Fading case color on the frame, loading lever, and hammer. Brass trigger guard and backstrap turning a mustard color patina. Grips are excellent plus, showing most all the original varnish and little wear. Case exterior shows minimum wear. Brass inlay plaque on lid, engraved with letters "G-E-E-A-H". Red interior is clean showing minimum wear. Overall a very clean high condition revolver. -MKS-Accessories: CaseBarrel Length: 7 - 1/2"Caliber/Bore: .36 RifledManufacturer: MetropolitanModel: 1851 NavySerial Number: 3289

(A) RARE AND UNUSUAL SHERRARD, TAYLOR & CO. CONFEDERATE TEXAS DRAGOON REVOLVER.

Lot # 1240 (Sale Order: 240 of 637)

This is an extremely unusual gun in that it does not conform to other known Tucker & Sherrard made guns, however accompanying documentation suggests that this could not only be correct, but also an extremely important piece in the Tucker & Sherrard Company of Lancaster, Texas saga. Marked on the top of the barrel "SHERRARD TAYLOR & CO" (important to note that this is the name the company was registered under during the war). Made with a single barrel/frame pin. Barrel does have the cutout on the right side. Recoil shield is grooved. The brass round trigger guard appears to be a bit too beefy to have been modified from something else, although early model guns are known to have square back trigger guards. The serial number of "2" appears on the left side of the loading lever, bottom of grip strap, in front of the trigger guard, and flat of the barrel. There is a cutout in the rear of the barrel for a simple rear sight. The 6-1/2" barrel appears to have been that length for a long time. The cylinder has squared stops. According to the consignors notes, this pistol was bought at a small auction in New York around 30 years ago. This gun at the time was looked at by well known gun expert Frank Sellers. A copy of the book "Texas Gun Lore" by Carroll C. Holloway, published in 1951 in which this gun is photographed on the 10th page of photographs at the beginning is included with the gun. The picture is dark and it's hard to make out detail, however a very careful study of the picture leads us to believe that this is the same gun. The small write up under the picture states "Sherrard, Taylor & Co. revolver, serial 2, made in Lancaster, Texas, in 1862 or 1863. The cylinder is a Colt cylinder, and it may never have had an original part. It was reputed to be a gift to Governor Lubbock, who, upon departing to join President Jefferson Davis' staff, gave it to a Judge of the Court of Criminal Appeals...". On pages 133 & 134, in the chapter on Sherrard, Taylor & Co., Holloway further goes on to state "Crockett displayed a pair of Sherrard, Taylor & Co. revolvers to the Military Board, and to an awed press. Were these revolvers completed in Lancaster in their entirety? It is probable that they were not. If they were, they were pilot models. These guns were finished so far ahead of completion date of anything on plant schedule, that a suspicion of their entire authenticity is in order. This firm may have been the first in history to alter a Colt revolver in order to produce a Confederate-made firearm. An examination of the revolver bearing serial number 2, which well may have been one of those displayed by Colonel Crockett in Austin, reveals a frankly Colt cylinder. Of course, this may have been a replacement by an owner at a much later date". Other discrepancies are noted as well. Barrel could very well be a modified Colt, with the forcing cone having been shortened and rifling beginning right where the barrel meets the cylinder. Again, this is a very unusual gun that certainly requires much further examination and research. CONDITION: Overall gun retains a light patina with some areas of pitting and evidence of having been heated in a few spots. Markings are worn but clear. Some screws are replaced, as is the mainspring, which is extremely strong, and wedge. There is no half cock notch on the hammer, does not appears to have had one. The hammer has a welded repair to it. Grips are worn with a glued crack down the full length on the left side as well as dings and handling marks. The lever catch is a restoration. Bore has strong rifling with a very slight twist to it, appears to be Colt rifling. Good mechanical function, given the replacement mainspring. (A) CASED BRITISH PROOFED COLT MODEL 1862 POCKET POLICE SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1244 (Sale Order: 244 of 637)

High condition full blue finish Model 1862 Colt Pocket Police. Typically you would see these beautiful revolvers with case colored frames, but this unique example was finished in London with a high polish blue finish on frame, barrel, and cylinder. 6-1/2" barrel with Colt New York address and British proof marks. British proof marks also on cylinder. Matching serial number 20404 with small initial "E" on barrel, frame, trigger guard, and backstrap. Matching number 0404 on wedge. Considering the small "E" over the serial numbers one would expect to see this revolver engraved, however it is not. More than likely it was intended for engraving while at the Colt New York factory, instead sent in the "white" to London for final finishing and sale. Trigger guard and backstrap are silver plated. The loading lever along with hammer (also typically case colored) are polished bright. One piece varnished walnut grips. Fitted in an English oak partition style case complete with bullet mold, English style powder flask, nipple wrench, oiler and "R. Walker London" percussion cap tin. Nice "Directions For Using Colt's Pistols" label inside of lid. CONDITION: 95-97% high polish blue remains on frame, cylinder, and barrel. Bore is excellent with light pitting. All screws are original and unmolested. 80-85% original silver on trigger guard, traces of silver on backstrap. Grips are excellent with most original varnish remaining. Case is excellent overall with minor separation of lid frame and top, easily repairable.
