(A) FANTASTIC AND UNTOUCHED DIMINUTIVE SAMUEL STULL SIGNED PERCUSSION KENTUCKY RIFLE DATED 1850 AND

Lot # 1287 (Sale Order: 287 of 637)

Samuel Stull was an Ohio gunsmith who lived between 1808 and 1907. He was a farmer and a gunsmith and began making rifles at a very young age, reportedly at age 12. He spent his entire life on a farm located about 1 - 3/4 miles south of Millwood in Knox County, Ohio. He reportedly used to walk to Canton and purchase barrel blanks, which he carried home on his back. He likely farmed in the summer and practiced gunsmithing during the winter months. In 1952, 125 Stull rifles were on exhibit at the Mt. Vernon Armory. This rifle is likely his masterpiece. The full octagon rifled barrel features a brass dovetailed front sight with silver blade. The rear sight is an adjustable ramp sight. Top flat is signed "S * Stull" in script, in a banner surrounded by ornate scrolls. The barrel tang is also decorated with scrolls. The fine, flat, handmade percussion lockplate has a finely executed roped border and is engraved with scrolls. The hammer is engraved en suite. The bolster is decorated with two roped relief rings. The brass patchbox is in the style of Bedford County, Pennsylvania and had five half moon piercings. It is engraved with roped borders and floral scrollwork with tulips on the lid. The long, three stage toeplate is retains by seven screws, between each is engraved a shaded scroll. The rifle features double set triggers and a fine trigger guard with chased relief panels, scrolls, and engraved designs. A brass wearplate extends from the front of the trigger guard the entire way to the ramrod entry ferrule. It is shaped and engraved with vines bearing flowers, a series of crossed arrows, and other borders and floral designs. The ramrod entry ferrule has an engraved tulip on the tang. In front of the brass buttplate tang there is a long German silver comb wearplate, retained by small silver pins and engraved with scrolls and floral designs. There are a total of 28 solid sterling silver inlays, all of which were engraved. Some of these designs include 'C' scrolls, hearts, half moons, and on each side closest to the muzzle is a sleeved hand with thumb pointed upward and index finger pointed forward. As the lock is retained by a screw on the front, the faux silver sideplate is in the shape of a ribbon and decorated with checkered panels and shading. The ovoid silver wrist escutcheon is decorated with a border and dated 1850. Above the cheekpiece is a large, silver, ovoid inlay engraved with a well executed patriotic eagle with tulips on each side of its head. Behind the cheek piece there is an inlay on an engraved and detailed cocked percussion pistol. This pistol is composed of seven separate pieces, including silver sights, hammer, trigger, and trigger guard. The pistol is engraved with scrollwork and designs and has a brass ramrod, just as this rifle has a brass ramrod. About 1/4" from the muzzle is an inlaid silver ball being shot from the pistol. Below the pistol there are two large rattlesnakes inlaid into the stock and profusely decorated with scales; one his a silver tongue in its mouth, separately inlaid. The brass nosecap is engraved with 'C' scroll designs which mimic the engraved silver inlays on the forestock. The rifle is complete with its original brass ramrod. The full length, highly figured, maple stock is relief and incised carved in front of the lock and sideplate with three gadrooned panels on each side. There are also shaped relief panels around the lockplate and sideplate, as well as a relief comb. The highly relief cheek piece is also molded. There are two incised scrolls, one on each side of the ramrod entry ferrule and panels between each silver inlay along the forend on both sides. CONDITION: This beautiful rifle belonged to the consignor's late father and was stored in a closet in Massachusetts for as long as she can remember (over 55 years). It is in untouched, attic condition with no polishing or restoration. Very good condition overall with no missing inlays, damage, or alterations. The barrel retains a light brown patina with sharp edges and crisp engraving. The sight ramp is now absent. The original percussion lock retains a matching patina, shows no pitting or corrosion, and functions well. Brass is complete unpolished and retains a dark mustard patina. Engraving on all inlays and hardware shows little or no use. The silver inlays all retain a dark, unpolished patina. The stock retains all of its dry, original finish and shows only a couple light storage marks. This diminutive rifle, signed and dated, with inlaid rattlesnakes and a pistol, is almost certainly Samuel Stall's masterpiece and worthy of the finest Kentucky rifle collection. Samuel Stull was an Ohio gunsmith who lived between 1808 and 1907. He was a farmer and a gunsmith and began making rifles at a very young age, reportedly at age 12. He sp...moreent his entire life on a farm located about 1 - 3/4 miles south of Millwood in Knox County, Ohio. (A) EXTREMELY SCARCE & HIGH CONDITION SAMUEL HAWKEN PERCUSSION RIFLE.

Lot # 1288 (Sale Order: 288 of 637)

Samuel Hawken of St. Louis is arguably the most famous pre-Civil War rifle maker of the now famous half stock so called Hawken Rifle. He was so famous, in fact, that the halfstock rifles, regardless of maker, became known throughout the frontier as simply a Hawken rifle. Samuel had established his own enterprise in Xenia, Ohio, but after the death of his wife and father, he relocated to St. Louis, where he formed a fresh business, separate to that of Lakenan (his earlier partner) and his older brother Jacob. The Hawken brothers became partners, however, after Lakenan's death. Jacob Hawken died in 1849 and Samuel continued with the business on his own. In 1855, he retired and passed the shop to his son William, and William's business partner Tristram Campbell. Samuel Hawken died on May 9th, 1884, at the age of 92, in St. Louis. The top flat on the heavy octagon barrel on this rifle is simply stamped "S. Hawken St.Louis" which would indicate that this rifle was built after Jacob's death which dates it from 1849-1855. The rifle bears no other markings. It is a typical Hawken in all respects. Features include a 31 - 1/4" heavy octagon barrel. Actual bore measures approximately .50 caliber. Typical walnut halfstock with cheekpiece. Brass furniture includes trigger guard, nose cap, buttplate, and rear rod retainer. Triggers are double set. Sights are a wind drift rear and rocky mountain front blade. CONDITION: All iron parts a homogeneous soft patina. Legends are sharp as are edges. Set trigger is working. Rifling is sharp and clean. Stocks have darkened with age and has usual handling marks but free of cracks or chips. A very high condition and scarce original Hawken that would be hard to improve on as it is the best example we have ever seen or offered. A rifle that truly represents the early Westward Expansion. (A) EXTREMELY RARE MODEL 1875 LEE VERTICAL ACTION SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE

Lot # 1293 (Sale Order: 293 of 637)

Another invention from the fertile mind of James Paris Lee, this rifle was produced at Springfield Armory in about 1875. Congress had appropriated $10,000 for the development of this rifle but after only 143 were produced the funds ran out and the project was never refunded. With that limited production it makes this one of the most rare of all military rifles. Rifle is described as having a 32 - 5/8" barrel with barleycorn front sight/bayonet lug for socket bayonet and a Trapdoor Springfield 1,200 yard ladder rifle rear sight. Mounted in a full length, one piece, uncheckered walnut stock with two bands and blued steel nose cap. Upper band has both stacking and sling loops with corresponding sling loop in front of the trigger guard. Bottom of forestock is slotted for a partially concealed trapdoor-style slotted head ramrod. Left side of the wrist has the “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche and bottom of the stock has the circle “P” stock inspector cartouche. Top tang is stamped “U.S.” and patent date. Action is most unusual with Martini-style breech block that is opened by striking the rear face of the hammer spur with the heel of one’s hand which causes the front of the breech block to lower and if sufficient force is exerted the empty cartridge casing will be ejected. At that point the breech block is locked open and is allowed to close only when a cartridge is loaded into the chamber and the rim of the casing depresses the extractor. The hammer is then cocked and fired in the normal manner. Very few of these rare rifles have survived today and are found only in the most advanced Springfield Collections or museums. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains 92-93% strong original blue showing wear only around the muzzle from bayonet installation and a storage rub that has turned chocolate 10" from muzzle; receiver and top tang retain about 95% original blue with losses at high points from light period use. Breech block and hammer retain virtually all of the arsenal finish with about a 10% loss at high points. Stock is superb with most all arsenal finish remaining. Vivid, crisp cartouche as well as circle "P" inspection to rear of trigger guard. Serial number 125 is observed on trigger group, hammer, sear and left side of upper tang. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. This is one of the finest examples we have observed. Another invention from the fertile mind of James Paris Lee, this rifle was produced at Springfield Armory in about 1875. Congress had appropriated $10,000 for the develop...morement of this rifle but after only 143 were produced the funds ran out and the project was never refunded. (A) MUSEUM QUALITY SHARPS MODEL 1868 CARTRIDGE CONVERSION CARBINE

Lot # 1294 (Sale Order: 294 of 637)

Immediately post Civil War the United States government looked for ways to implement the more reliable self contained cartridges in the existing and abundantly available firearms that our military had on hand. Numerous different adaptations and conversions where tried and tested. This near new condition Sharps 1863 carbine is one of the 31,098 such Sharps converted to the metallic self contained .50-70 Government cartridge. Rifles and carbines alike were chosen based upon their existing condition. The percussion/paper cartridge variations of the Sharps had their receivers modified so they would accept an extractor. The breech block was replaced with a new updated variation that utilized a firing pin and was slotted for the new extractor. The hammers were replaced with new hammers without the percussion cap dome. Barrels were either bored out and lined with a .50 caliber insert or if the bores were in prime condition just left on the receiver and chambered for the new cartridge. Metal surfaces were refinished in the appropriate rust blue or case colored as needed. These newly upgraded rifles and carbines were then almost immediately issue to western bound troops for the then ongoing Indian conflicts. CONDITION: Extremely fine. The receiver, lock plate hammer, buttplate, and lever retain most all of their vivid case colors. The bore is the three groove variation and is bright and shiny with razor sharp rifling. The butt stock and forearms are virtually unissued and show little or no use. The butt stock has a crisp DFC cartouche within the wavy oblong box. Most all screws have their bright nitre finish and little evidence of ever having been turned. A minute chip of wood is missing at the toe. This is an exceptional Indian Wars Sharps carbine that would be extremely difficult to improve up. (A) CIVIL WAR ERA WHITWORTH B SERIES .451 HEXAGONAL BORE SHARPSHOOTERS OR TARGET RIFLE.

Lot # 1295 (Sale Order: 295 of 637)

During the Civil War, long range sniping came to its fore. The Confederate Army had ordered approximately 250 Whitworth rifles, at a cost of $1,000 in gold per rifle with 1,000 rounds of ammunition each. Many of these documented Confederate "sniper" used rifles were outfitted with a Davidson telescopic sight and were of "2nd Quality" with two barrel bands. It has been noted that Union General Sedgwick fell victim to a head shot from a sniper using a Whitworth rifle on May 8, 1864. Shortly before General Sedgwick was killed he scolded some of his men for ducking gun fire, telling them that "they couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." This particular gun is of the same general style as those used during the Civil War by Confederate sharpshooters, to great effect. Three band configuration with minimal line engraving around the lock, undoubtedly made for use as a military rifle. No provision for a bayonet. Sling swivel on the front band and at the rear of the trigger guard tang. Checkered fore and aft. Matching numbers on barrel and trigger guard. Hexagonal bore with original correct ramrod. There is a lock mounted hammer safety. Crown over "W" on the rear of the lock, marked "WHITWORTH" towards the front of the lock above the safety. "WHITWORTH PATENT" on the top of the barrel, along with the standard "52" Birmingham commercial proofs and serial number. "BEST" is engraved on the trigger guard tang between the two screws. There is a piece of metal, most likely for a nipple protector with split ring and chain, mounted under the front of the trigger guard which appears to be a contemporary add on. The target adjustable front sight and possibly the wrist mounted Vernier rear sight are of a newer vintage. The wrist mounted Vernier sight does show age to it. The barrel mounted rear sight ladder is very plain but appears to have been on this gun for a very long time. Stamped into the bottom of the stock between the front of the trigger guard and forend checkering is "NATCHEZ". The tops of the letters are worn, and bottoms of the letters are sharp. This marking is not original to the gun, nor of the period during which it was in use and has been added in more recent times. CONDITION: Very good with approximately 40% original case colors on breech plug. 10% faded case colors on the lock. Barrel has about 10-15% original brown near the breech, mixed with an even age patina and some very minor pitting. There is a fair amount of original blue on the rear and middle bands. All markings are clear and sharp. Wood is very good with dings and handling marks consistent with age, original untouched checkering is sharp. The buttplate has some pitting, mostly towards the top screw. Ramrod has light pitting. Action is crisp. The bore is dirty with distinct rifling showing some wear.
