(A) J.P. LOWER MARKED SHARPS MODEL 1878 BUSINESS RIFLE IN HIGH CONDITION.

Lot # 1301 (Sale Order: 301 of 637)

This is a very fine example of an original Sharps Model 1878 Business rifle. It is chambered for the .45 - 2 7/8" cartridge. Features include a 30" heavy round blued barrel, case color frame, lever, block and bolt. The walnut stocks have an LB in circle on left side at rear. The rear sight is a folding semi-buckhorn while the front sight is a Rocky Mountain blade style. The barrel breech is stamped J.P. Lower Denver Col. The barrel has the Old Reliable stamp as well as the Bridgeport stamp. Lower once stated he had probably armed every Colorado Territory lawman, badman, Indian, and gambler in the territory during the rough and tumble Buffalo hunting and Indian wars years. His fame as a shooter and owner of the largest gun emporium west of the Mississippi made him famous and rich. Any gun that can be documented to having been shipped to this illustrious address has a scarce gun indeed as it leaves no doubt as to it's presence at one of the richest times in our country's history. CONDITION: The barrel retains at least 90% original blue that is just starting to thin. The frame and lever retain fully 90% case colors, some of which are still bright. The stocks are excellent with just the usual minor bruises. The bore has sharp, mirror bright rifling and the action is crisp. The screw heads are true and have not been molested. It would be very hard to find a nicer, western shipped, Sharps rifle. Outstanding. From the Mel Hrubetz Collection. DBBarrel Length: 30"Caliber/Bore: .45 - 2 - 7/8"FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: SharpsModel: Old ReliableSerial Number: 19690

(A) MERWIN & BRAY MARKED BALLARD SINGLE SHOT CARBINE.

Lot # 1307 (Sale Order: 307 of 637)

This carbine is almost identical to the .44 Rimfires sold during the Civil War to the Kentucky Cavalry, with the exception of caliber which is .54 Rimfire. There are no US markings, so while its time frame dates to the Civil War, there is no indication of US issue. Left side of frame is marked "MERWIN & BRAY AGT'S N.Y. 782". Right side is stamped "BALLARD PATENT 1861". Features round barrel, single band with swivel, dovetail front sight, folding leaf rear sight, walnut stocks, swivel at base of stock, lever action, single shot, and breechloading. CONDITION: 95% original barrel blue with some patina showing through. Barrel band is grey with age spotting. Frame is a soft, silver dull steel grey with some scattered age freckles. Stocks are excellent, proud to metal. Strong, clean, sharp rifled bore and fine action. While not officially military issued, it is probable it saw use given that it was a quality weapon and its .44 caliber counterpart is considered reliable and accurate. This is the never seen .54 caliber version. Extremely sharp, all original, and untouched with lots of finish. It is believed that the .54 Rimfire was experimental, introduced at the start of the war but never adopted. These are extremely rare carbines in this caliber and very few have surfaced. (A) RARE NO SERIAL NUMBER COLT ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER (1878).

Lot # 1315 (Sale Order: 315 of 637)

The Ordnance Department purchased 171 unnumbered replacement frames from Colt between 1874 and 1891. A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Graham, Kopec and Moore states that the Army purchased six replacement frames from Colt on May 4th, 1891. These were the last replacement frames purchased from Colt. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt three-date/two line patent marking initially used by Colt in 1890 at approximately serial number 134,000. The inside of the loading gate is stamped 1561 assembly number. The frame is stamped with the "US" property mark and the letters "LD" instead of a serial number. The barrel is roll stamped "45 COLT" on the left side which indicates was installed during the Colt overhaul of Single Action Army revolvers circa 1903. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the small "RAC" sub-inspection mark utilized during the 1903 Colt overhaul. The cylinder is also a replacement that dates from the same overhaul and is stamped "RAC" sub-inspection mark of the rear face. The bottom of the back strap has no serial number marking. The trigger guard is number 47723 and inspected "HN". The revolver retains at least 85% of the blue finish used in the Colt 1903 overhaul. CONDITION: More than 85% of the bright case colors remain on the frame and hammer. The balance of the revolver has just thinned through. The Colt and Ordnance sub-inspection markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The walnut grips are excellent overall condition with a couple of light chips. The action is tight and functions like new as is the bore. This unnumbered US Colt was one of the tail end production Artillery Models as they were using up the last of the parts supply. Given the rarity and the near mint overall condition on this nearly unique US Colt, it would be next to impossible to find another example let alone a finer example. This is a rare and documented variation of the Colt Artillery Single Action revolver. (A) AINSWORTH INSPECTED CUSTER ERA US COLT CAVALRY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER.

Lot # 1317 (Sale Order: 317 of 637)

Noted expert John Kopec made several observations during his review. He states that this revolver could have been in service prior to the battle at the Little Bighorn and originated within Lot Seven with a few known 7th Cavalry guns within this lot number. He notes that the US on frame and USA on barrel were nicely removed and speculates that this was the work of a deserter (patent dates on frame were also eliminated). He also notes that many early Ainsworth Colts used left over 1860 mainsprings such as this example. You will find matching serial numbers on barrel, cylinder, frame, trigger guard and back strap. You will also find the Ainsworth A stamp on bottom of the barrel, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder. CONDITION: All legends are strong. There are no remaining visible cartouche stamps on grips and grips are slightly shy at toe with little original finish. The gun is an overall soft gray patina with original blue under housing. The action is crisp and the bore is sharp with light frosting. DBBarrel Length: 7 - 1/2"Caliber/Bore: .45 ColtFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: ColtModel: SAAPaperwork: Kopec letterSerial Number: 6673

(A) JOHN KOPEC DOCUMENTED COLT CIVILIAN / CAVALRY SINGLE ACTION MANUFACTURED IN 1874.

Lot # 1318 (Sale Order: 318 of 637)

A very unique and intriguing Colt Single Action with "US" marked frame and commercial caliber, markings on trigger guard. The unique background of these guns is explained by a letter from John Kopec as being a commercial contract for Prussia. These guns were shipped and then returned to Colt due to a confusion about caliber. The "US" marking is explained by Kopec as all these early production guns were US marked while in their soft configuration but a extremely limited amount of guns (40) were pulled from the US Government allotment for special sale to Prussia. These guns were shipped through J.P. Moore & Sons, who acted as a Colt Agent. Little is known about the history of the guns after rejection by Prussia some are believed to have gone to Wilkerson & Hoyt in London and some obviously made it back to the United States. This Cavalry configuration Colt Single Action was reviewed and inspected by Mr. Kopec and his findings are as follows. The barrel has been replaced with an 1880 period barrel with no serial number. The ejector assembly is a the 3rd variation from the 1880's. The hammer is a a 1900's pattern. The mainspring is a later pattern with roller groove. The grips appear original however were not removed for inspection. The back strap has been professionally modified for additional hammer travel to allow for sear wear from use. The loading gate has a different assembly number than the frame. CONDITION. Good as found with the revolver remaining a dove grey finish and appears uncleaned or polished. The grips are full sized and well fitting with slight material loss at corners. The action is crisp and properly fitting. The bore is dark with visible rifling. This is a very unusual Civilian/Foreign Contract Colt with a truly amazing history. (A) SMITH & WESSON FIRST MODEL SCHOFIELD WELLS FARGO REVOLVER.

Lot # 1322 (Sale Order: 322 of 637)

The Schofield originated with the efforts of Colonel George Schofield to improve the American Model Three for military usage. Many First and Second Models , circa 1875-1877, were issued to active units, reportedly including the 4th, 9th, and 10th Cavalry. The 4th Cavalry was involved in the Geronimo campaign. The 9th and 10th comprised the famous “Buffalo Soldiers” – African American troops stationed in the American Southwest. There they fought in the Indian Wars, including campaigns against the Apaches, and served in civil disturbances such as the Lincoln County War. Many of the surplus Schofields were purchased by dealers such as Bannerman and Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. They were then offered for sale, often with the barrel cut to a handier 5" length and the gun nickel plated to withstand the rigors of Western usage. The combination of quick reloadability and big .45-caliber power made them popular with lawmen, outlaws, and others who were serious about their sidearms. Schofields were reportedly favorites of the James Gang, with serial numbers 3444 and 5476 attributed to Frank James and serial number 2341 to Cole Younger. Jesse James carried serial number 366, and serial number 273 is reported to have been used by a James Gang member, possibly Jesse. Famous lawman Bill Tilghman and Frank McLowery of O.K. Corral fame are among others who are reported to have carried Schofields. It is estimated that several hundred Schofields with the cut down 5-inch barrels were purchased by Wells Fargo to arm its messengers. The guns were marked by the company on the right side of the under barrel ejector housing by stamping over the Schofield patent. The marking reads “W.F. & COS EX” along with a re-stamping of the guns serial number. The S was dropped from the company name in 1898, and guns are found marked both ways, suggesting the period of use. It is believed that all authentic Wells Fargo Schofields known to date have serial numbers under 6000. Schofield serial number 1 was among those used by Wells Fargo. This gun is so marked, with S, on right side and appears 100% original and unmolested. The US is no longer visible on butt but the LP can be seen on barrel. Grips are handmade replacements. CONDITION: The left side plate screw is missing. One screw on barrel catch is shot. Legends fairly sharp. Something was carved into butt at one time but is light and not readable. Finish is all gray/brown patina. Gun indexes fine. Bore is very sharp. Good example of true Wild Western revolver. The Schofield originated with the efforts of Colonel George Schofield to improve the American Model Three for military usage. Many First and Second Models , circa 1875-18...more77, were issued to active units, reportedly including the 4th, 9th, and 10th Cavalry. (A) CUSTER RANGE COLT US ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45 REVOLVER WITH KOPEC LETTER.

Lot # 1325 (Sale Order: 325 of 637)

According to Kopec, this low four digit gun was made in 1874 is is a prime lot of Custer 7th Cavalry guns. This gun is from so called Lot 5 with at least four in this batch having documented use at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Having been pulled from active service in December of 1900, it went through the usual rebuild program after which, it was reissued for use in the various so called Banana Wars that the US was involved in at the turn of the last century. The trigger guard is 138326. The backstrap is an early Ainsworth #4039. The barrel is #9772, David Clark inspected. The cylinder is commercial replacement. The grips are refinished and have diamond pattern at top, no stamps visible. The top strap of frame has a repair where it was once cut out for some type of sight. The front sight has been heightened. CONDITION: The entire gun was reblued at one time, not arsenal finish. The gun indexes and locks up and the bore is sharp. As to blue, overall, the gun would rate about 75% with most thinning on cylinder and the blue itself is thinning as well. Legends are still sharp. Nice looking gun where the frame could have rode with Custer. The Colt letter is interesting in that it states serial number 5011 was shipped with 100 guns to Armory Springfield, Dec. 13, 1900.
