(A) COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY US ARTILLERY MODEL REVOLVER (1886).

Lot # 1326 (Sale Order: 326 of 637)

This is an example of a typical 1890's US rebuild of the standard Cavalry Model where as the parts show mixed numbers while the grips and cylinder have the "RAC" inspector stamps. The frame is David Clark inspected, dating it to 1884-85. Indian Wars period. The trigger guard is number 120817. The backstrap is number 133105 with "K" stamp. (A) EARLY AINSWORTH US COLT CAVALRY REVOLVER WITH KOPEC LETTER.

Lot # 1329 (Sale Order: 329 of 637)

This attractive Ainsworth inspected US Cavalry has an excellent letter from the authority on Cavalry single actions, John A. Kopec. His comments are cartouche AOW on grip is worn away, owner's name of Hughes is scratched into both sides of grip, grips are correctly numbered within grip channel, revolver fitted with the old style mainspring lacking roller channel; these are correct and frequently encountered in early example. Kopec also says that the gun has been fired very few times with the forcing cone in excellent condition, and retains factory blue finish within bore and forcing cone. Kopec finishes by saying "This is truly an exceptional example of an early 'Ainsworth' Cavalry revolver and we have enjoyed doing this review." Barrel length is original with slant barrel address, cylinder with matching number 6995, strong U.S. on frame. Front sight is its original height. Grips are full dimension, though worn. Kopec comments that although this revolver was not recorded in the National Archives, serial number falls between a revolver which belonged to Troop C, 5th Cavalry, and serial number 7084, which also belonged to 5th Cavalry. Speculation as to the identity of the Hughes that carried this revolver focuses on a Thomas Hughes (Charles Hughes), a private assigned to Company H in the 7th Cavalry. Mr. Hughes enlisted in the 20th Infantry on June 30th, 1870, deserted, and was captured. A most interesting service record. CONDITION: Gun is in extraordinary condition for an early Ainsworth, front sight still retaining some pasty military bluing, surface of ejector rod housing has strong traces of original bluing, trigger guard retains traces of original bluing, frame shows virtually no wear. Cylinder has traces of original bluing in flutes. Hammer has some original case hardening, particularly on back. Trigger has traces of original bluing. Backstrap has blue mixing with patina. Serial numbers are all very strong and matching throughout. Action is excellent, bore is near new. Sighting notch still has traces of original color case hardening with some minor erosion. In short, one of the best early Ainsworth Cavalry revolvers we have seen with a great deal of research accompanying it. DBBarrel Length: 7 - 1/2"Caliber/Bore: .45 LCFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: ColtModel: 1873Paperwork: Extensive letters from Kopec, research, etc.Serial Number: 6995

(A) CASED PRESENTATION PAIR OF SMITH AND WESSON NO 2 ARMY REVOLVERS.

Lot # 1334 (Sale Order: 334 of 637)

Capt Thomas Drummond was born on May 9, 1832, the son of Rev. Dr. James Drummond and his first wife. His father was born in England, came to the U.S. at age six years, and the family settled in Jefferson County, Ohio. Thomas's father was a medical doctor and a minister who practiced medicine for ten years and was a minister for 52 years. His first wife, mother of his three children, died at a very young age, and is buried at Methodist Cemetery at St. Clairsville. Thomas was raised by his father's second wife, Catherine, who James married in 1840. The presentation plaque on top of the original double gun walnut display case reads "Cleveland City Union Club to Capt. Thomas Drummond 5th US Cavalry Jan. 4, 1865." Captain Drummond joined the 5th US Cavalry at their formation. The 5th Cavalry Regiment, known as the "Black Knights", was a historical unit of the United States Army that began its service on August 3, 1861, when an act of Congress enacted "that the two regiments of dragoons, the regiment of mounted riflemen, and the two regiments of cavalry shall hereafter be known and recognized, as the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth regiments of cavalry respectively of the U.S. Army. During the Civil War, the Regiment fought valiantly at the 1st Battle at Bull Run, the Battle of Gaines's Mill, the Battle of Fairfax Courthouse, the Battle of Falling Waters, the Battle of Martinsburg, the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle of Wilderness, and the Shenandoah Valley Campaign, among many others. The 5th Cavalry's most notable action came at Gaines Mills, when the regiment charged a Confederate division under command of a former comrade, General John Bell Hood. The regiment suffered heavy casualties in the battle, but their attack saved the Union artillery from annihilation. Drummond was given this set of pistols in Jan. of 1865 and had survived so many of the wars most noted and infamous battles but died on April 2, 1865 from injuries suffered in the Battle of Five Forks in Virginia fought on April 1, 1865, only one month and eight days before the war ended on May 9, 1865. Both guns are an identical pair of Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Model Revolvers with 6" octagon barrels, spur triggers, with high polish factory blue finish and walnut grips. CONDITION: Both guns retain approximately 85% of their original factory high polish blue finish blending with soft even patina. Both have razor sharp legends. Both have sharp bores. The guns are less than 200 numbers apart. There is no attribution on the guns themselves but given closeness of numbers and almost identical condition makes sense having been presented in the original case. Set comes with a rare Black & Gold S&W ammunition box that is faded and has 14 rounds of ammunition. (A) DOCUMENTED CUSTER ERA COLT ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1341 (Sale Order: 341 of 637)

Originally manufactured in 1874 by Colt for the United States Army. This classic Custer Era Single action is now Colt Factory modified from the original 7 - 1/2" barrel to the later 5 - 1/2" Artillery variation. Chambered for the .45 Colt cartridge with US marking on left side of frame next to two line patent markings. Single line Colt address upon barrel top with proper thin blade front sight. Original one piece walnut grips have been period checkered but still retain the RAC inspection marking on bottom. Mixed numbers are found on barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and butt. This is proper for these modified revolvers as they saw continued use from the early Indian wars into the Philippine insurrection. Most of these historic revolvers were modified by the United States Gov't at designated arsenals. This example is quite uncommon as it was modified to the 5 1/2 inch barreled Artillery variation by the Colt factory and returned to Springfield Armory on July 15th 1901. Colt is accompanied by Factory letter dated Oct 12th 2007 indicating modification date and shipment to US Gov't Armory at Springfield MA. CONDITION: Barrel is good with strong rifling. Action is crisp and properly functioning. Grips are very fine as period checkered and full fitting. Finish on barrel and cylinder is a dove grey with little blue remaining. Frame retains much arsenal blue finish in protected areas. (C) EXHIBITION ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION BY MASTER ENGRAVER TIM GEORGE.

Lot # 1350 (Sale Order: 350 of 637)

Originally produced in 1912 this Colt Single Action has been transformed into a piece of mechanical art by Master Engraver Tim George of Virginia. Formerly engraving for Colt and Old Dominion Engravers, Mr. George is known as one of America's foremost and most talented firearms artists. Colt Single Action Army is chambered for .45 Colt with 5 - 1/2" barrel and is fitted with superb one piece ivory grips. Engraved in excess of what would be known as style "D" from the Colt factory and inlaid profusely with gold wire and raised gold inlays on recoil shields and backstraps. Engraved in wide scrolls and vines with fine dot punch background on frame barrel and ejector rod with further scroll and vine on back strap and trigger guard. Fine cross hatch checkering is engraved on frame forward of cylinder with matching checkering at top of backstrap to rear of recoil shield. Dual gold bands are inlaid on barrel at muzzle and breech. Further gold inlay is sculptured around the caliber designation on left side of barrel. A broad and impressive gold border inlay is done in complete circumference of the frame on both sides and continuing to the top, rare and surrounding the sight groove. The hammer is embellished in the same fashion of engraving and gold wire inlay. A fantastic gold overlay of the Colt crest and shield in masterfully applied to the left recoil shield and is minutely dot punched on the interior. A small gold inlaid Rampant Colt is inlaid on the left side of frame at bottom to rear of patent dates. The loading gate is embellished with the famous Colt Factory Dome with minute Rampant Colt on top of the spire. Further gold inlays are done at the back strap of the Rampant Colt with a dual gold band/border. The hundreds of hours of master craftsmanship to complete this gun is unknown. The artistry is unsurpassed and this museum quality work would be the centerpiece of any collection be it firearms or paintings or sculpture. Truly magnificent.
