(C) STELLAR CONDITION US SMITH AND WESSON MODEL 1917 REVOLVER FROM THE CHARLES CLAWSON COLLECTION.

Lot # 1360 (Sale Order: 360 of 637)

During the First World War, government suppliers could not keep up with demand for the 1911 so both Smith & Wesson and Colt were called on to produce a large frame revolver that could use the same ammunition as the Colt 1911. Smith answered with their large square butt N-Frame double action HE revolver that, through the use of half moon clips, could fire the .45 ACP rimless cartridge. It is a five screw, pinned barrel square butt. It wears a commercial quality blue finish with case color hammer, trigger and lanyard. The bottom of the barrel is stamped "United States Property" and the butt is stamped "US Army Model 1917". The left side of the frame bears the ordnance bomb and Springfield armory eagle head acceptance stamp. The grips are two panel smooth walnut. Provenance, Charles Clawson collection, with letter dated Feb, 2014 stating this fact and that said gun is 100% original and correct CONDITION: Aside from a light drag line a bit of high edge muzzle wear, the gun remains at about 99% original factory finish with bright colors. Grip are excellent with few handling marks. The bore is about mint and the action like butter. Truly a superb specimen in almost un-used examples. (C) A VERY INTERESTING IRISH SHIPPED WEBLEY MARK VI WITH 4" BARREL.

Lot # 1361 (Sale Order: 361 of 637)

This gun is largely a standard Mark VI Webley with an uncut cylinder, military finish, appropriate British proofing on cylinder, frame, and barrel. What makes this revolver particularly interesting is the 4" barrel with front sight machined directly into barrel and marked on top strap "Webley and Scott Ltd Birmingham". Chamberlain and Taylorson note on page 32 of their book on British Service revolvers that a number of 4" Mark VIs were seen in the early 1980s, and 100 were imported by Pacific International Merchandising in Sacramento, California. This gun is stamped on the inside of the frame for importation from Inter-American, who distributed through Pacific International, Armex International, and Old Sacramento Armory. Of the imported guns, the two disassembled and examined had front sight machined directly into the barrel, as this one does. Additionally, they note that six of the revolvers bore government inspection marks, but no property marks. Again, this is correct with proper view and proof marks, and a small "(Crossed swords) / 7" and "T" in circle in the frame, under left grip strap, which appear to be inspector marks. Chamberlain and Taylorson speculate that these guns may have come from the Crime (Special) Division of the Garda Sioncha, the Republic of Ireland's national police. Research from Milner's database indicates that the gun was intended Ulster Volunteers, who disbanded in 1922, but was shipped to J. Brennan, the Barrack Master at Phoenix Park, Dublin, in 1931 instead of Belfast. Further research should prove extremely fruitful. Accompanied by a holster that fits the gun very tightly with a "(Broad Arrow) / 167" proof on body and "H G R L21915" on belt loop, and two distinct bracket marks where something was attached at one point. Cleaning rod in compartment. CONDITION: Very good, still retaining the vast majority of its military finish. The cylinder is untrimmed and the ejector functions correctly. There is some high edge wear on the gun and a some scrapes from operation that are now showing bare metal. There is some light pitting on the frame and barrel, but nothing serious. Bore is excellent. Grips are very good, complete, with some handling marks. Holster is good with some crazing but complete. (C) IMPORTANT PATTERN ENFIELD P14 SNIPER PROTOTYPE BOLT ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 1364 (Sale Order: 364 of 637)

Built utilizing a Pattern 14 Enfield produced by Winchester with 1917 inspections on breech. During this period the British were hurriedly attempting to develop and adopt an advanced snipe rifle to compete with the German snipers during the Great War, eventually adopting the No 3 "T" in 1918. This rifle is a prototype sniper using a quick release pillar type scope base with external windage and elevation adjustments. The unknown maker scope is a central focus design, not unlike a later Fecker produced scope. The tube is constructed of a central steel tube with brass objective bell and brass eye piece. The rear of the receiver has been professionally modified to operate with the windage adjustment and the receiver ring had been drilled and tapped to accept the pillar/post front base. All observed parts of the rifle are Winchester production with the exception of the Eddystone marked stock. The bolt body has been polished bright for smooth operation and the barrel has been shortened to 24 - 1/4". The unique scope base and platform are tool room production and are void of markings. This system obviously lost out to the pattern 1918 telescope system with claw mounts used on the No.3 "T". British developmental firearms are extremely rare and not frequently encountered. Additional research should reveal the maker of the telescope itself. CONDITION: Very good with most blue finish remaining. Bore is excellent and action operates properly. Scope is very cloudy and cross-wire is broken. Wood stocks are very good with inspections and proofs very legible. TDWBarrel Length: 24 - 1/4"Caliber/Bore: .303 BritishManufacturer: WinchesterModel: P14 Sniper PrototypeSerial Number: 190965
Built utilizing a Pattern 14 Enfield produced by Winchester with 1917 inspections on breech. During this period the British were hurriedly attempting to develop and adopt...more an advanced snipe rifle to compete with the German snipers during the Great War, eventually adopting the No 3 "T" in 1918.
