(A) RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1876 DELUXE LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 1403 (Sale Order: 403 of 637)

Fine deluxe “Centennial” Winchester Model 1876 rifle with 28" octagon barrel, full magazine, combination front sight & elevator adjustable rear sight. Top flat of barrel has the Winchester & King address & patent dates and caliber marking over the chamber area. Mounted with 3X deluxe shell & flame grain American walnut with early style checkered forearm and serpentine grip buttstock that has ebony inlay in grip cap & crescent buttplate with trap. Receiver has single set trigger. Left side of lower tang, under the wood has the assembly number “2703” and “XXX”. Matching assembly number is also found in top tang channel of buttstock and inside toe of buttplate. According to Blue Book of Antique American Firearms & Values, Fjelstad & Allen, there were 63,871 Model 1876 rifles & carbines produced in the period 1876-1897 in four different calibers and a variety of barrel lengths, both standard grade and deluxe plus muskets. Deluxe features on this model were special order only and are rarely encountered today. The Model 1876 was the first big bore repeating rifle offered on the American market. It was a favorite on the western frontier where the larger & heavier caliber bullets were capable of taking the very largest North American big game including grizzly bears, moose, elk, and buffalo. This model was a favorite of President Theodore Roosevelt which he carried on many hunting expeditions around the world. Deluxe versions of this rifle are quite rare with few encountered today. The extra cost of ordering such a rifle was generally prohibitive to the working man of that era and so few were ordered. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching. Overall the rifle retains 60-75% factory applied finishes with bright blue on the barrel and magazine tube and bright case colors on the receiver, side plates, lever, hammer & buttplate. Forend cap colors have faded. There is a hair-line crack back of the top tang, otherwise wood is sound and retains about all of a fine professionally cleaned Winchester style finish with excellent checkering. Set trigger functions properly, mechanics are crisp. Bright bore with good shine and scattered fine pitting. (A) WINCHESTER MODEL 1885 SINGLE SHOT WITH MALCOLM SCOPE AND MOUNTS WITH FACTORY LETTER

Lot # 1404 (Sale Order: 404 of 637)

Manufactured in 1896 with a 32" Number 4 barrel without provision for rear sight, chambered for .32-40 WCF. Case colored receiver with Schuetzen lever and full Swiss butt with cheek rest. Full double set triggers. The XX Deluxe "H" checkered flame grained crotch walnut stocks are factory piano varnish finished. Mounted on top of the barrel is a 30" Malcolm scope in Malcolm mounts. Rifle was obviously intended for optics use as it was produced with no dove tail in the barrel for the rear sight. CONDITION. Excellent. The barrel has well over 98% bright factory blue finish with crisp legible markings. The case colored receiver is brilliantly bright with only edge wear and losses of protective lacquer over the colors. The Schuetzen lever retains most case colors but they are becoming smoky as the lacquer has worn through. The double set triggers have most of their dark blue remaining and are properly functioning. The Malcolm scope is very good but needs cleaning. The lenses are cloudy but viewable. One tensioning screw is missing at rear of scope. The Swiss butt plate has suffered some finish loss and now retains approximately 60% factory applied blue finish. The Deluxe piano varnished stocks are very fine with typical small dents and scratches but are near exceptional with only high point wear. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. Accompanied by a Winchester factory letter that indicates the rifle was originally shipped as a .38-55, 32 inch barre with mid-range Vernier sight with palm rest set triggers checkered pistol grip stock schuetzen butt, cheek piece, spur lever and barrel matted on three sides. (A) BRITISH STAMPED SMITH & WESSON MODEL 320 REVOLVING RIFLE

Lot # 1410 (Sale Order: 410 of 637)

Based heavily on the Smith and Wesson Model 3, the Model 320 Revolving Rifle saw a limited run of 977 units. Of those 977, 137 were exported and 840 were retained in the United States. Unfortunately, the revolving cylinder design was found to be less desirable for rifles than it was for pistols as burning powder tended to spray out of the cylinder during operation, which was problematic as one of the shooters hands was directly in the line of the spray. The brass was also uniquely designed, as Smith and Wesson were still using black powder, so a longer piece of brass was used in order to achieve the desired velocity, with the lead bullets sunk into the case. This example, serial number 780, has the red swirled gutta percha fore-arm with the Smith logo. The grips also are adorned with this logo. The small two leaf rear sight is intact but the long range sight is not present. The removable walnut shoulder stock has the original S&W logo buttplate with small repair on toe of stock and tip of butt. Hardware is intact. CONDITION: Forearm and grips are in excellent condition with no visible repairs. The metal shows no original finish and is basically a spotted gray patina. All of the numbers on metal are matching. The bore is sharp and the action is fine. In addition, there is a near full box of ammunition but no lid and a period home made display case. The barrel measures 18" and there is no sign of any front sight which means it had a removable front sight that rode on the rail. (sight is missing). It is accompanied by a S&W letter, indicating that serial number 780 was shipped May 29th, 1894 to Markt & Co of New York before heading on to Hamburg, Germany as part of a shipment of 10 models in identical configuration. It is British proofed, indicating that it passed through Britain at some point. The rarest of all Smith & Wessons. Based heavily on the Smith and Wesson Model 3, the Model 320 Revolving Rifle saw a limited run of 977 units. Of those 977, 137 were exported and 840 were retained in the ...moreUnited States.
