(C) SCARCE BROWNING SUPERPOSED GRADE "V" FIELD CHOKED SHOTGUN ENGRAVED BY V. DOYEN WITH AFTER MARKE

Lot # 1456 (Sale Order: 456 of 637)

(1953) The grade "V" was one of the highest grades normally offered before the introduction of the "VI" of the late fifties and the "Midas" of the sixties onward with gold inlay. The "V" was the forerunner to and closely resembles the later "Diana" grade. Examples are quite scarce. This gun retains its original barrel length and chokes, but has been updated with target style forend, most likely done at time of fitting with three auxiliary skeet barrels in 20, 28, and .410 gauge by Cordy, and made for Simmons Guns Specialties. The original barrels with ventilated rib and early Browning St. Louis address only, are marked for full and full chokes, and are still choked this way. The replacement barrels are well made and marked for skeet and skeet, .410 barrels for 2 - 1/2" chambers, the others for 2 - 3/4". They are 26 - 1/2" in length. Coin finished superposed action with gold plated single selective trigger and non-automatic safety is engraved in early "V" style with semi-relief vignettes of group of pheasant on left, and ducks on right, surrounded by scrolling ribbons and acanthus. A pair of quail (?) fly across bottom of action and a pheasant is perched on limb on trigger guard bow. Seldom seen engraver's signature, "V Doyen" is at bottom of pheasant scene. Lightly fiddle figured and marbled European walnut long tang round knob buttstock measures 14 - 5/8" over newer Pachmayr white line black pad. Closely spaced point pattern checkering is at grip. Newer target forend matches well, but is lighter in color. Gun and barrels are housed in tan vinyl case with leather trim lined in blue velvet. CONDITION: Very fine, as lightly refurbished. Original barrels retain nearly all of what appears to be their original blue. Auxiliary barrels show very little use. Action retains nearly all of what appears to be its original coin finish. Buttstock retains nearly all of its original varnish with some light crazing and a few scattered marks. Pad is relatively new, and probably dates from time of auxiliary barrels and replacement forend wood which is excellent, near new. All bores are excellent. Mechanically excellent, except for a bit of sluggishness due to congealed oil. Case is very fine. MGM54. Lot # 1463 (Sale Order: 463 of 637)

(Circa 1909) Two sets of chopper lump barrels, 27 - 1/8" set with slightly raised pigeon rib, 29" barrels with slightly swamped game rib. Both sets are engraved with Purdey's South Audley Street address and Whitworth steel information on tops. Barrel flats of both sets are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2 - 3/4" chambers. Serial numbers are on bottoms of barrels, along with barrel makers initials "WH" (Bill Hill). Tube numbers "41238" and "41239", are on loop of shorter barrels, and "38104" and "38105" are on 29" barrels. (We are grateful to Purdey's for acknowledging that barrels were originally 32" and 34".) Case hardened robust Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action is made with no safety and has short top tang. Action also features patented third fastener, side clips, bushed strikers, engraved arrow head tumbler end cocking indicators, and single non-selective trigger. Action is engraved with very nicely cut classic rose and scroll in Purdey house style, most likely the work of James Lucas, head engraver at the time. "J. Purdey & Sons" is on each lockplate, as well as on bottom of action over "London". Small bow trigger guard with open scroll on bow has serial number on tang. Newer made nicely marbled European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14 - 1/8" over thin black Old English pad. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Small beavertail forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in period oak and leather case with brass corners. Case is lined in burgundy cloth and has 1950's vintage Purdey paper label in lid. CONDITION: Very fine as reconditioned. Barrels retain nearly all of good quality re-black. Action has nearly all of a well done case hardening re-color. New stocks have essentially all of their finish. Bores are very fine with some light frosting, and a few very minor pings. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Single trigger is balky, possibly wood bound and needs further freeing. Case leather is dark, with numerous bumps, and scrapes. Newer handle partially detached. Straps are good (inside case). Renewed interior cloth is very fine with some rubs and soiling. Label is fine, lightly foxed and with a patch of soiling from contact with action. MGM58. (C) FINE MATCHED PAIR OF JOHN DICKSON ROUND ACTION EJECTOR DOUBLE TRIGGER GAME SHOTGUNS WITH ORIGINA

Lot # 1467 (Sale Order: 467 of 637)

(1925) 29" chopper lump barrels are engraved with Dickson's name and Edinburgh address on narrow swamped game ribs. Rear portions of ribs are gold inlaid "1" and "2" which also appears on top levers, and forend tips denoting a true pair. These guns are also listed as a pair in "John Dickson & Son; The Round Action Gunmaker" by Donald Dallas. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs along with 1989 London re-proofs at .736 and 2 - 1/2" chambers. Round bodied trigger plate case hardened actions (patent use numbers 1616 and 1617) feature automatic safeties (SAFE inlaid in gold), pivoting third fasteners, and double triggers. Actions are engraved with 90% coverage classic rose and scroll, with very fine shading and detail as done by the Sumner engravers of London. Maker's name is on each side of action, and bottoms are engraved "DICKSON'S PATENT". Blued trigger guards with rose and scroll on bows have serial numbers in semi-relief on tangs. Somewhat matched European walnut straight grip buttstocks are classically styled with point pattern checkering at grips and gold ovals on toe lines engraved "L. N. R." Gun "1" is of fiddle figured and well marbled European walnut, and measures 14 - 5/8" over ribbed wood butt on 5/8" extension. Gun no. "2" is of lightly marbled and figured European walnut measures 14 - 3/4" over checkered wood butt with no extension. Matching splinter forends have Anson releases. On round action guns the ejector mechanism is housed and tripped within the action body itself. The Dickson ejector system is very strong and reliable and was copied by Ruger for use in their "Gold Label" guns. When acting only as extractors, unfired cartridges are lifted 1/2" from chambers. Guns are housed in what appears to be their original two-gun leather case embossed "L. NEIL ROBERTSON" on central rectangle. Interior is lined in blue green velvet, and has blue printed paper Dickson & Son 63 Princes Street label in lid (used from 1920 - 1928). Bottom compartment is separated by dust flap, and has space for both guns and barrels, and contains a brass and ebony two piece cleaning rod, Dickson marked square oil bottle, and two old hinge pins. CONDITION: Very good, as refurbished, most likely at time of re-proof. Barrels retain over 95% "best" re-black, engraving on ribs almost unreadable. Actions retain traces of original case hardening color where protected, around fences, and on trigger plates, balance a fine pewter gray, all engraving remains clear. Top levers and trigger guards re-blued and retain nearly all of that blue, engraving is somewhat softened. Stocks retain nearly all of a hand rubbed oil finish over some old marks, and with a few subsequent nicks and dings. Checkering is somewhat worn, dirty, and does not appear to have been re-cut, except for a "repair" to a dent on forend of gun "2". Bores are excellent. Actions are tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and slightly out of time on both guns. Case leather is still relatively light in color, and has quite a few bumps and rubs on edges. Straps and handle are good, but losing top grain. Interior cloth is very good to fine with some bumps, rubs, and cuts. Label is very fine with some light foxing toward top. Partitions are good. Dust flap has cloth worn through and piping missing at edges. Accessories are good. MGM52. England.” Barrel flats have London nitro proofs for 2 - 1/2" chambers. Bottoms of barrels are stamped “Choke” and have the barrel makers initials “GW” (presumably George Wood). Chokes are Improved Modified and Improved Cylinder. The tube numbers are “63829” and “63830” which are stamped on the barrel loop. A Beesley patent self-opening sidelock action features an automatic safety with “Safe” in gold, double triggers, disc set strikers, and cocking indicator. Purdey & Sons” is on lockplates. The tiger stripe or fiddleback figured European walnut cast off straight hand grip features tear drop points and the stock is finished to a checkered butt. The matching splinter forend has an Anson release. The actioner's initials “SW” are stamped on forend iron. This lovely and lively gun handsomely benefits from a British tan makers oak and leather case with brass corners, its cleaning tools, equipment, black leather Purdey case label and charge card. “E.M.V” on the outer case brass disc. Accessories in the case include a two piece ebony rod, two ebony handled turn screws, ebony handled striker key, leather wallet containing a pull-through, bone striker pot with strikers, pair of Purdey 20b snap caps, oil bottle, as well as cleaning brushes and the case key. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain 90% plus blue. Action retains approximately 80% original case colors with some slight fading on fences, beads, and on bottom of action. Forend has a darkened original oil finish. Barrels are on face and ejectors are timed. Bores are wonderful. The leather on the case has some handling marks, but mainly around the edges. Straps are good, and handle has broken off on one side. Oxblood colored lined case interior is very good with partitions intact. Leather case label is excellent. Paper label is getting dark from age. (C) WORLD FAMOUS J.C. GREEN 2 GUN SET OF PARKER "BHE" GRADE SHOTGUNS. THE MOST COMPLEX SET OF GUNS P

Lot # 1471 (Sale Order: 471 of 637)

(May 1937) Made as an "all gauge" set for the relatively new game of skeet shooting for sportsman and skeet shooting enthusiast, J. Cliff Green of Centerville, MD. Parker came up with two guns, one 12 and 20 gauge on 1/2 frame, the other 28 and .410 gauge on 00 frame, all with 24" barrels with Remington date code "KF". Both guns have single selective triggers, automatic ejectors, and beavertail forends. The barrels normally made for the frames are of Acme steel, while the special extra wide smaller gauge barrels are of Vulcan steel. The story of this incredible set is best told by reading Hershel Chadick's advertisement in the DOUBLE GUN JOURNAL Volume 2 Issue 4, of Winter 1991, where he had them advertised for sale (and sold) at $250.000.00, and included a letter from Parker Brothers to the National Rifle Association outlining the difficulties of their making of this set. (See photo) The guns are listed in the PARKER GUN IDENTIFICATION AND SERIALIZATION ledger with present specifications. As described, guns have special high grade imported wood (nicely marbled and figured) with skeleton buttplates and gold oval inset grip caps (engraved "G"), and have typical "B" style checkering, checkered side panels and fleur-di-lis drop points; as well as specially shaped "A1 Special" style beavertail forends. Engraving is of typical "B" style. Large frame gun has ducks on left side, snipe on right, and a pair of setters on trigger plate. "PARKER" is behind bird scenes. Small frame guns have a pair of quail on left, pheasant on right, and pointers on trigger plate. "J. C. GREEN" is on each trigger guard bow. All barrel sets are marked "Skeet In, Skeet Out". Guns are housed in high quality oak and leather case specially made for them, which has leather trimmed canvas outer cover. Case is lined in green velvet and has gold embossed black leather Parker gun label in lid. Bottom compartment is semi French fitted for both guns and their barrels along with a pair of snap caps for each, and a round oil bottle. A high quality brass and ebony cleaning rod is under the .410 barrel channel. One of two covered compartments holds two keys. CONDITION: Excellent, close to new, as refurbished, most likely by the factory, and subsequently by Turnbull, as each barrel set has a number of Remington repair codes, but all sets have code "RYY3" (November 1952), the most likely date for the final factory re-work. Some subsequent wear is evident with some light silvering of sharp edges and fences of actions, and a few minor marks in wood finish. All bores are excellent, and guns appear to be mechanically excellent, except .410 barrels will not completely close. Case is excellent, with only a few light bumps and scratches in leather. Handle is detached and in covered compartment. Straps are fine. Interior has compressions and marks on cloth, and is generally excellent. Undoubtedly one of the most desirable, rare, and historically significant brace of Parkers ever made. MGM59. (M) UNIQUE AND IMPRESSIVE SMALL GAUGE SIDELOCK EJECTOR SIX BARREL SET GAME GUN BY FAMARS WITH EXCEPT

Lot # 1473 (Sale Order: 473 of 637)

(1971) Six sets of barrels, two each of 20, 28, and .410 gauge, all are of dovetail construction, and fitted with slightly raised matted, ventilated ribs with ivory beads. Barrel sets are inlaid in gold with "I" "II" and "III" for tightly choked barrel sets, and "1" "2" and "3" for open choke sets. Breech ends are engraved with 1" fields of well cut rose and scroll in shaded background with corresponding 1/2" triangles at muzzles. Ends of muzzles are also scroll engraved. Each barrel set has its own dedicated semi beavertail ejector forend with corresponding numbers and numerals on forend tips. Barrel flats are stamped with 1971 Italian nitro proofs, serial numbers, and A&S logos. Coin finished sidelock action features non-automatic safety, bushed strikers, and single non-selective trigger. It is extensively and masterfully engraved and gold inlaid by the celebrated Angelo Galeazzi, whose signature appears on trigger plate. (This very gun is pictured on pages 120 and 121 of MODERN FIREARMS ENGRAVINGS by Mario Abbiatico.) This sublime engraving consists of a field of semi relief open acanthus scroll with shell and vase highlights in a dot matrix background. This superb scroll serves as a backdrop for classically inspired gold inlays of a woman's face in various poses on lockplates. The portraits on the left lock are of a young woman, while those on the right appear to be the same woman of advancing years. These portraits are surrounded and accentuated by a scattering of rose blossoms. All gold work is very lifelike due to superb use of bulino shading. (These details are not discernible in book photographs.) On front portions of lockplates spilling down onto action, are a pair of dragons in gold flanking "FAMARS" on left and "Italy" on right in central shields. Bottom of action has more scroll and portrays a young dancing boy in gold holding a wine glass. This figure is also flanked by splashes of gold roses and dragons heads. A greenman in gold is on trigger plate in front of trigger guard bow. Single beaded trigger guard also scroll engraved, is inlaid with "B" in gold at center of bow. Serial number is in gold on tang. Fences are full relief carved in acanthus scroll with dragons heads scrolling toward tops. One cannot say enough about the quality and attention to detail in this engravers masterpiece. Well marbled and nicely fiddle figured European walnut pistol grip buttstock with Monte Carlo comb measures 14" over checkered wood butt. Sculpted drop points are behind lockplates, and well cut closely spaced fancy pattern checkering is at grip. The monogram "JEB" is inlet in gold on heel behind Monte Carlo. All six forends with Anson releases match well, and central diamonds are inlet with gold shields flanked by oak leaves engraved "FAMARS". Gun and all six barrel sets are housed in large dark leather covered case with stitched leather corners. Interior is lined in green cloth with three FAMARS shield logos printed in lid. Bottom section is semi-French fitted for action, barrels, and three sets of snap caps. Only one set (28 gauge) is present. CONDITION: Gun and barrels appear to be essentially "as new" with scant evidence of ever having been fired. Gun has been in storage a long time and congealed oil on extractors, etc. needs to be addressed. Otherwise there are only a very few very light handling marks and scratches in all wood and metal finishes, most notably some compressions in wood at top of left lockplate. On barrel set "2" ejectors are strong and in time,(others not tested due to congealed oil on extractors). Trigger appears to work well. Case is excellent with scratches and marks on exterior. (1971) Six sets of barrels, two each of 20, 28, and .410 gauge, all are of dovetail construction, and fitted with slightly raised matted, ventilated ribs with ivory beads...more. Interior has some rubs. An unusual one-of-a-kind set with masterpiece engraving.
