Believed manufacturing date is 1888, Marlin Ballard Union Hill Target Number 9 chambered for the .38-55 cartridge with 28" part round part octagon barrel. Hooded globe Marlin Ballard front sight with elevator adjustable sporting rear sight and fitted with Marlin graduated peep sight with thick base. Fine highly figured American walnut sporting forearms with cheek rest equipped pistol grip Schuetzen buttstock with Farrow pattern light Swiss buttplate. These rifles are frequently identified as the No. 9 Union Hill Target but were made by special order and rarely fit a specific configuration. CONDITION: Very fine with over 95% factory blue finish remaining on barrel. Receiver retains over 95% vivid to faded case colors. American Walnut stocks are very fine with most all varnish remaining and no material losses. The bore is very fine, bright and shiny, with sharp lands and grooves. Tapered octagon barrel holds folding rear sight, globe front, and is fitted with Stevens scope number 438. Case hardened 44-1/2 action with loop lever and double set triggers is engraved with classic large open scroll. Stevens tang sight without windage adjustment has been fitted. Schuetzen buttstock with right hand cheekpiece, closely spaced checkering, and heavy Swiss buttplate is of finely crotch figured American walnut. Schnabeled forend matches well. Weight: 13 lbs 3 oz. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel and action numbers match. Barrel retains approximately 80% original blue, thinning on sides, silvered on sharp edges. Scope retains most of its blue with some patches of browning. Optically good. Action retains over 70% muted case colors with some scratches and marks, and fading but still visible. Stevens 44 action. This is one of the rarest actions made by Stevens, featuring etched engraving showing a dog on point on left side and a deer head on right. Both vignettes are surrounded by a foliate design. The action was originally case colored. Double set triggers and loop lever. Buttstock is pistol grip style, checkered, with a cheekpiece. Checkering is a coarse pattern. Material is a fairly plain walnut. Steel buttplate, No. 3 heavy Swiss, was originally case colored. Checkered forearm of the one screw style. Barrel is No. 3 weight and is serial numbered to the action. A number 1 is stamped under the forearm. Barrel also stamped J. Stevens Arms and Tool etc., as well as the caliber, .28-30. Barrel is half octagon. Barrel has been relined to .22 caliber. Front sight is a Lyman globe and the rear sight is a Stevens-Vernier with windage. CONDITION: Only some of case color remains on the action. Buttstock is very fine with just a few dings, dents and scratches from handling over the years. Considerable case color remains on buttplate. Forearm shows considerable wear from handling, retaining approximately 60% of the varnish. Most blue remains on barrel, except at muzzle, where the blue is almost totally missing, probably from some cleaning solvent years ago. A nice, lightweight little rifle and a true Stevens rarity in very presentable condition. Stevens 44-1/2 Action Model 49. Action is coarsely scroll engraved as is typical for this model. Fitted with a number three loop lever, which has been bent to fit the gun. Double set triggers. Buttstock is a straight grip checkered made of fancy American walnut and is not correct for this rifle as straight grips are only found on the Model 51 and 54 in higher grades. Buttplate is nickel plated and is believed to be a custom design. Forearm is by Stevens, checkered, and made of fancy wood. Two screw design. Stevens barrel is 29-1/2" long, full octagon, drilled and tapped for a scope with scope blocks present. Globe front sight and a Stevens-Vernier fitted to the tang. Included is a Bedding & Mull target scope in micrometer rings with a broken rear bracket. CONDITION: There are just traces of case color remaining on the action in protected areas. Buttstock shows very minor handling marks and is in excellent condition. Forearm is in excellent condition. Most of the barrel blue remains except on the bottom flat, probably from use on a rest, and on the high edges. Good action, bore is excellent. Optics need work. Odd file marks are on the action frame bottom, just in front of the triggers. The forearm is an uncheckered replacement. The Stevens-Pope barrel, now 26" long, is full octagon, drilled and tapped for a scope, No. 4 weight, and has been set back at the breech end. Round barrel is marked with Winchester information along with "WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL" and caliber on upper left side. Winchester proofs are on top of barrel and action. Barrel is fitted with dovetailed mounts for Sidle long tube scope (no. 2364) with ring post reticle in micrometer mounts. High wall action features long standard loop, double set triggers and light weight hammer. Breech block is case hardened. A factory letter may reveal that new barrel, stocks, etc. was factory work. Very finely crotch figured American walnut Winchester capped pistol grip buttstock measures 13-3/4" over hard rubber Winchester buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip, and matching large forend has inset ebony tip. (Serial number is in felt tip in barrel channel) Weight: 11 lbs. 2 oz. Coin finished action is factory engraved in usual Grade II style with acanthus leaves in swirled borders flanking vignettes of a pair of squirrels on left side, with flushing duck on top of action, and a pair of gophers on right. Smoky marbled and lightly fiddle figured European walnut square knob buttstock measures 14" over ribbed steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is at grip. Matching forend attaches to barrel with screw. Rifle is housed in brown and tan Browning case, gold embossed "WM. C. LUMM" on top front edge. Case is lined in royal blue velvet and contains instruction manual and owner registration card. Weight: 4 lbs 14 oz. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel retains nearly all of its original blue. Offered is a very scarce 1942 dated trench gun with all of the early features. The heat shield is a World War I style six row but no patent date. The change date to a four row was mid-1942. The left side of stock has the WB cartouche with ordnance wheel. Waldemar Broberg inspected 1897 trench guns from July of 1941 through June of 1942 only with most World War II trench guns bearing the GHD stamp. This is correct take down style and this gun falls right into the correct serial number range of 930,000-953,000. The left side of the frame is stamped simply US without the bomb which is only observed on the 1941-1942 made guns. The top of barrel has the WP stamp with ordnance bomb. Top of frame stamped with WP. The stock has correct fluted comb with Winchester logo black buttplate and sling swivel. The buttplate is proper style but is a bit shy to wood and may be a replacement. Finnish is commercial style blue. Bottom of barrel has 42 stamp for year made. CONDITION: Outstanding specimen with 97% original blue on frame with some light handling marks. The barrel retains the majority of original blue finish while the heat shield retains about 75% blue with balance a gun metal gray. Stocks are excellent with minor handling marks. Mirror bore.
