(N) EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE SWEDISH SERVICE MARKED BERGMANN MP-35 MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1051 (Sale Order: 51 of 637)

This early Bergmann MP35 machine gun was commercially manufactured and taken into Swedish service as Kulsprutepistol M/1939. I wish to extend thanks to the collecting community who answered the call to decipher the markings of the brass disk fitted into the right side of the buttstock. This is what allowed the determination about this history of this gun. Marked with “3 / KI / No 540” and affixed with straight slot screws, the first number would indicate squadron, precinct or battalion, in this case, probably “3rd Staffsquadron”. The “K1” would indicate “Livgardets dragoner”, which was based in Stockholm. This would have been the 540th gun within the regiment. Only the serial numbers as noted below are in evidence. Otherwise this specimen is devoid of makers markings of any kind. This model was one of the last of the high-quality milled steel machine guns before Germany and other countries went to the practice of using stamped metal parts. It incorporates some very interesting features for a pistol caliber machine gun, such as two-trigger select fire system where the firer can squeeze off solitary rounds one after another by squeezing the forward trigger to the rear and then releasing it after each shot. If the firer desires fully automatic fire they need only to squeeze the forward trigger all the way to the rear which actuates a lever (2nd trigger) at the rear of the trigger guard which provides automatic fire. The other highly interesting feature of this model is a quick release barrel feature. Depressing a detent button 3 - 1/4” to the rear of the front of the forend will actuate a lever allowing the muzzle and barrel assembly to rotate 90 degrees and be easily withdrawn from the shroud for cleaning. Other features include a safety lever at the left side of the receiver below and slightly to the rear of the adjustable rear sight, and a bolt removal catch which allows the bolt to be fully withdrawn for cleaning. The bolt itself is a relatively heavy piece which cocks the weapon in a way reminiscent of a bolt action rifle for the first shot. This early specimen has an all-walnut stock. Receiver serial number is the only visible external number. Bolt is numbered “4094”, and barrel is numbered “7037” on bottom of chamber. One original 32 round magazine is included. It is worth noting that Bergmann was happy to provide guns to whichever organization wished to purchase them. Before and during World War II the Germans were courting the best possible relations with Sweden to ensure the flow of war materials from the Scandinavian countries. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent refinish which turned the high alloy steel magazine housing a fine plum color. There are some slight areas with some light patina on the shroud indicating the refinish would have occurred a long time ago. Mechanics are fine. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt appropriately in the white with extremely fine to near excellent bolt face. The magazine is a nice snug fit. Wood has typical light dings and bruises from handling with scrape and slight chip about the size of a nickel on the right side just below the bolt handle. This is a select-fire machine gun. A very “Rare Bird” here in the United States, and gives one to wonder how it came to be here. Perhaps some inter-Soldier trade between German/Swedish rail security forces guarding incoming ore coming from Scandinavia, with subsequent U.S. serviceman capture. Too bad this gun cannot speak. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) FLEMING REGISTERED BATTLEFIELD USED JAPANESE TYPE 99 MACHINE GUN (FULLY TRANSFERABLE).

Lot # 1059 (Sale Order: 59 of 637)

Extremely fine specimen Original Japanese Type 99 light machine gun as manufactured by Hitachi in 1944, June. Serial number indicates this gun would have likely been used on IWO JIMA, and it has very interesting battlefield use indicators. Visible serial numbers appear matching on barrel, receiver, and lower assembly. Bolt is number 14104. Flash hider is a Langley reproduction. Tiny “Fleming Firearms” markings on top of receiver and so indicated in registry as Model “196”. The Japanese Type 99 machine gun bears a striking resemblance to the ZB26 machine gun and was the “improved” model of the Type 96. The type 99 fires the more powerful 7.7x58mm Japanese rimless service cartridge and utilized an improved wedge and nut barrel attachment system. It fires from an open bolt and was an effective full auto only automatic rifle. With practiced trigger control, the firer can squeeze off individual shots. The adjustable gas port was intended to defeat the problem of fouling, which it did, but soldiers also found that it could adjust the rate of fire. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very fine original finish thinning at the gas cylinder and bipod legs, as well at the right side of receiver. Carrying handle has clear indication of a frontal bullet strike at an angle which indicates it would have continued to strike the firer. There is a corresponding area of light blood corrosion on right side of receiver which indicates the projectile founds its mark. Mechanics are fine. Bore is very fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is fine. Wood has typical light dings and handling marks. A particularly interesting Japanese machine gun which should appeal to the World War II collector. Very glad it is available as a fully transferable gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4. Extremely fine specimen Original Japanese Type 99 light machine gun as manufactured by Hitachi in 1944, June. Serial number indicates this gun would have likely been used...more on IWO JIMA, and it has very interesting battlefield use indicators. (N) EXCEPTIONALLY RARE AND CASED NICKEL PLATED MINIATURE STEN MK II MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1066 (Sale Order: 66 of 637)

Chinese manufactured in 1954 as a pre-production miniature piece when the Chinese were exploring producing copies of the STEN themselves. The Chinese contracted an American Ordnance officer in China as a consultant to gearing up for production. Marking on top of magazine housing indicates Chinese 44th arsenal. Unfortunately, only 6 of these miniatures were ever produced. The American Ordnance officer production consultant brought this specimen into the United States clandestinely and registered it during the 1968 amnesty period. It is unknown to this cataloger if any of the others made it here, but perhaps. Springs are good and taut and the magazine housing rotates like the original. Shoulder loop slips on and off, and the longtime owner who purchased this gun from the Ordnance Officer who brought it back states that it runs. One magazine is included with this gun as well as the leather covered wooden case which this miniature came in. Case looks vintage to the gun. This miniature has no selector so it is a full-auto only machine gun. In the NFA registry with manufacturer, as simply “STEN”. Measures 15" from tip of barrel to rear of stock. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original nickel finish with some flaking of the nickel to reveal some brown patina on the barrel and a couple spots on the receiver tube. Mechanics are crisp. Bore is near excellent shiny and bright. Bolt face near excellent. Magazine very clean with some flaking of nickel revealing brown patina. This is quite an attractive little piece which should have appeal across several collector spectrums. Very conservatively estimated relative to how neat this item really is! (N) RESTORED ORIGINAL BRITISH LINE BROTHERS MANUFACTURED STEN MK III MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1070 (Sale Order: 70 of 637)

Fine refinished British Line Brothers manufactured Sten MK III machine gun. Marked with manufacture’s mark “LB” and serial number on underside of magazine housing, with broad arrow proofs visible on rear receiver cup. Shoulder loop retains “29091” number on left side. One 32 round lustrous blued magazine is included. The Sten machine gun is a very simple and straightforward machine gun made mostly of metal stamped parts. It was far less costly, $10.00 U.S. in 1942 and quicker to produce than any of the previous sub-machine guns the British had fielded. The Mark III model was an even less costly to produce successor to the Mark II model with simplified attachment of the magazine housing and sheet metal shroud which covered the barrel. They were produced in great numbers for WW 2, but finding an original Curio and Relic specimen registered in the United States in uncommon. Manufacturer’s block on approved incoming registration form states, “England”. There is no doubt our G.I.’s tended to avail themselves of captured enemy weapons far more often than weapons of our allies, which, of course had to be accounted for by the Soldiers they were issued to. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish near excellent gray parkerized refinish with some bluing salt residue on the shoulder loop joint which could be easily removed with a brush.
