A RARE AND HISTORIC PROTOTYPE MCCLEAN MACHINE GUN PARTS KIT.

Lot # 1158 (Sale Order: 158 of 637)

When Samuel McClean failed to interest the Army or Navy in his automatic cannon, he instead worked with Lieutenant Colonel O.M. Lissak to develop a man portable machine gun that could be fired from the shoulder. The design eventually turned into the Lewis gun when the McClean-Lissak patents were given to Colonel Lewis for review and use. Ultimately, General Crozier opposed the design due to his dislike of any weapon that was not developed in an ordnance facility, so Colonel Lewis went to Belgium and manufactured arms under the Armes Automatiques Lewis, thus producing the Lewis gun. This parts kit is one of the McClean machine guns that has been expertly cut to both deactivate the gun while demonstrating the inner workings. The barrel and gas tube are knurled for their entire length, with a wooden foregrip attached to the gas tube and barrel via bracket. There is a sling swivel hole on the rear wood stock. CONDITION: Overall very good with a mixture of grey and brown patina, particularly at the high point of the receiver. Wood is original with numerous nicks and dings. There is evidence of welding and saw cutting incidental to deactivation. This is an important and historic piece of automatic arms development, as well as of American gunmaking. EW

(A) A FINE AND HISTORIC PRE-CULLODEN ALL STEEL SCOTTISH FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOL WITH SILVER HERALDIC C

Lot # 1163 (Sale Order: 163 of 637)

Attributed to Thomas Caddell. Pistol is believed to have belonged to Gordon Stewart of Drumin, an active Jacobite who lived in Drumin, a small village near the Glenlivet Distillery. Stewart never participated in Culloden, but was later taken prisoner and carried to London where he was executed in 1746. One of his descendants wrote a letter in 1843 that discusses his absence “He had ordered his horse and put on long boots for riding, and everything being ready, he sat down to breakfast. His wife in making tea, contrived as if by accident to pour boiling water out of the tea-kettle into one of his boots, which burnt and blistered his leg so much that he could not ride or walk for sometime, and before he could leave home, the Battle of Culloden had been fought." Gordon also appears in a list of officers who joined Lord Lewis Gordon on his way to merge with the Gordon Brigade. The all steel barrel, octagonal at breech with three wedding bands and swelled octagonal at muzzle. Steel ramrod, beautifully turned, appears to be original. Original belt hook is intact and measures 7" overall. Raised back sight integral with breech. The elegant all steel ramshorn butt stock engraved throughout its length with scrolls and thistles. A silver band inlaid behind rear sight reading "DRUMIN" for Drumin village. The spine elaborately and finely inlaid with silver scrolls. The right side inlaid with large silver plaque and beautifully engraved heraldic crest of the Stewarts with Stewart motto "Corde et Manu" (Trans: Hand and Heart). Left side inlaid with a silver plaque "Gordon Stewart 1713 - 1745." Possibly commemorative Culloden, as Stewart was executed for Jacobite sympathies in 1746. The original trigger of silver with an expanded flower, pricker of silver en suite with an expanded flower. Ramshorn steel part of stock inlaid with engraved silver. The plain lock, unsigned, signature possibly worn. Swan neck cock with pierced five pointed star rowel. CONDITION: Barrel with smooth worn patina and some wear to engraving as expected of a pistol carried and used for years. Stock with some wear to engraving but no real pitting. All small parts on lock appear to be original. Action functions as it should. Bore is good. The form of this pistol is elegant and exemplifies the very best of Scottish weapons artistry. This is probably the most historical and easily researchable pre-Culloden Scottish pistol that has been offered in many years. PROVENANCE: Sotheby's London, May 2000, Lot 729, where it brought £8,970, approximately $14,500 at the time. MZBarrel Length: 8 - 5/8"Caliber/Bore: .54 SmoothboreFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: Caddell, AttributedModel: Scottish All-Metal PistolSerial Number: NSN
Attributed to Thomas Caddell. Pistol is believed to have belonged to Gordon Stewart of Drumin, an active Jacobite who lived in Drumin, a small village near the Glenlivet ...moreDistillery. (A) RARE US MODEL 1808/1811 TRANSITIONAL FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY NORTH.

Lot # 1166 (Sale Order: 166 of 637)

This unusual specimen has both features of the Model 1808 and 1811 Martial pistols, but does not fit the specifications of either. It is known by many collectors to be the Model 1808-1811 transitional model. In addition, it has no "US" inspector marks or "U. STATES" on the lock. With the absence of government markings, it is possible this pistol was made for private purchase. Round, unmarked, smoothbore barrel with tang extending to pommel cap. Lock is of the style of the Model 1808 pistol and is marked completely the same except without the "U. STATES" mark in the center. Two of the three screws on the lock are marked with small "V" assembly marks. The pistol has standard brass Model 1808 furniture, including the elongated sideplate. An iron belt hook is also mounted on the left side. The plain, full length walnut stock mimics that of the Model 1811. Barrel is pin fastened. Complete with period wooden ramrod. CONDITION: All steel components have a bright surface with a few scattered grey areas. Brass has been polished and retains a mellowing patina with some scattered marks from use. Stock shows and added coat of finish and one splinter is replaced on the left side of forend. This is a very interesting and possibly unique specimen. (A) VERY RARE JOHN MILES VIRGINIA CONTRACT FLINTLOCK PISTOL, UNIT MARKED.

Lot # 1167 (Sale Order: 167 of 637)

Prior to the Virginia Manufactory being able to produce pistols on its own, John Miles Sr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania delivered approximately 250 pairs of pistols to Virginia to arm their cavalry during 1802-1804. The first of these pistols were supplied around October 7th, 1801. The first production coincides with the last of the production of the North & Cheney pistols. There is believed to be less than ten of these Miles Virginia Contract pistols known to exist today. This gun features the marking of "MILES PHILAD .1 REGT, VIRGA, CAVALRY DINWIDDIE" on the barrel which is correct. "P" proof on the left side of the barrel at the breech. The lock is marked ".M LES./ PHILA", the "I" apparently missing or broken from the stamp. As with Virginia Manufactory guns, this could be considered a secondary Confederate firearm. CONDITION: The barrel has been cleaned to bright with some pitting in areas, markings are clear. The balance of parts retain a pleasing patina with light pitting. Lock markings are clear. Brass has a pleasing patina. Wood has some restoration and areas of discoloration, crack in the bottom of the stock. Both barrel pins are replacements. Plain wooden ramrod is most likely a replacement. The groove in the rear face of the breech plug has been widened. All in all a very rare gun that has had a little bit of work done. (A) J. HENRY NAVY FLINTLOCK BELT PISTOL.

Lot # 1172 (Sale Order: 172 of 637)

For a similar example, see pages 204 and 205, number 97 in "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter. This is one of the almost unknown 1812 Contract pistols supplied by to the US Navy during the War of 1812. There were a total of 460 delivered. Today, according to "Historic Pistols", only two examples are known to exist, possibly due to rough naval use. The round smoothbore steel barrel is marked on the left side of the breech with a sunken "P" cartouche. The flat lockplate is stamped "J. HENRY" in the center. Standard brass 1807 style furniture with the addition of a belt hook. Complete with associated steel-tipped wooden ramrod. It is evident that this pistol had a Chambers alteration, as the piece of stock was intentionally removed along the barrel and a very small piece of metal can be seen from the tube that ignited the front charge. This was done with most Chambers-altered pistols. The government later gave up on this and converted them back to flint, according to Robert Sadler. CONDITION: Barrel retains a pitted surface with an applied brown finish. Lock is a good reconversion and retains a brown finish. Stock has a later coat of finish with some scattered marks from use and a few slivers along forend on right side. Belt hook is a contemporary replacement and is a copy of the British sea service belt hook. A rare pistol. Lot # 1173 (Sale Order: 173 of 637)

All French pistols were made in Canton, Massachusetts between 1810 and 1815 and were used in the War of 1812. (A) VERY RARE JOHN MILES VIRGINIA CONTRACT FLINTLOCK PISTOL, VA CAVALRY MARKED.

Lot # 1174 (Sale Order: 174 of 637)

Prior to the Virginia Manufactory being able to produce pistols on its own, John Miles Sr. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania delivered approximately 250 pairs of pistols to Virginia to arm their cavalry during 1802-1804. The first of these pistols were supplied around October 7th, 1801. The first production coincides with the last of the production of the North & Cheney pistols. There is believed to be less than ten of these Miles Virginia Contract pistols known to exist today. This gun features the marking of "MILES PHILAD .1 REGT, VIRGA, CAVALRY" on the barrel which is correct, although weak from being overly cleaned. The lock is marked "LES./ PHILA", markings are extremely weak from pitting and an aggressive cleaning. As with Virginia Manufactory guns, this could be considered a secondary Confederate firearm. This gun originally surfaced in an attic in 2013, in completely untouched condition and sold at Julia's. CONDITION: The gun has since been overly cleaned with significant restoration done to the wood. Areas of moderate pitting. Brass mounted. The lock does not hold at either full or half cock. Horn tipped ram rod has also had restoration done. GRBarrel Length: 10"Caliber/Bore: .68 SmoothboreFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: John MilesModel: Virginia ContractSerial Number: NSN
