(A) SCARCE AND DESIRABLE U.S. MODEL 1813 FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY SIMEON NORTH.

Lot # 1177 (Sale Order: 177 of 637)

Only 1,626 of this model were made by Simeon North between 1813 and 1815. This makes it rarer than the Model 1799 North & Cheney martial pistol, as less were made. The original government contract called for 20,000 of these but due to harsh recoil and large size, this was revised. This contract is also important because it was the first time that a gun maker offered a product with interchangeable parts. Round smoothbore steel barrel stamped "P/US" on left side of breech and "HHP" on right side, above touch hole. Flat beveled lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, and reinforced cock, center of lockplate stamped "S. NORTH/U./eagle/S./MIDDLN. CON." Standard Model 1813 steel furniture. Walnut half-stock with Wickham band and wooden ramrod with steel cleaning rod tip. Left side of stock stamped behind belt hook with inspectors mark "LS" for inspector Luther Sage. CONDITION: Steel components have been cleaned and retain a bright surface with some minor freckling and light pitting, markings excellent. Original flintlock configuration. Stock good with scattered marks from use and some chipping forward of front trigger guard tang. This is a fine example of a very scarce and early American martial pistol. (A) PAIR OF EXPERIMENTAL THREE-SHOT PISTOLS BY PETER PELOUX OF PHILADELPHIA.

Lot # 1180 (Sale Order: 180 of 637)

One of of the two is photographed and featured as number 145 on pages 298-299 of "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter. The book states that these three-shot pistols were made between 1815 and 1820 by Peter Peloux of Philadelphia. It is believed that they are the only two in existence that use the Chambers system for multiple fire in flintlocks. Speculation is that the pistols were loaded with three powder charges and three balls with holes drilled through them to ignite the next charge. The action, which is quite a distance from the breech, ignited the closest charge which then ignited the charge behind it, much like a Roman Candle. On March 23rd, 1813, Joseph G. Chambers of Pennsylvania was granted a US Patent for a system of "repeating gunnery." In February 1814, the US Navy contracted with George Tryon and John Joseph Henry for 20 repeating swivels and 200 repeating muskets. Peter Peloux was a gunsmith who had been working under M.T. Wickham at the US Arsenal on the Schuylkill in Philadelphia between 1812 and 1815. After the War of 1812, Peloux had his own shop at 190 Cedar Street in Philadelphia and was listed in city directories between 1816 and 1829. Several conventional flintlock rifles by Peloux are known. He later became the superintendent at the Krider Gun Factory. Peloux would have had a knowledge of the Chambers system and the ability to make the multi-shot system. The pair was possible made for trial, experimental purposes, or as a sample. The barrels are round, one is marked with British ordnance proofs at the breech, the other is unmarked. Both have their original iron ramrods. The intricate locks are stamped "PELOUX/PHILA" but the "PELOUX" marking was intentional defaced at some time and is only partially visible on each lock. The locks are retained by screws on the face of the lockplate and have external mainsprings which also function as frizzen springs. Both have reinforced cocks and waterproof pans. The American black walnut semi-full stocks have checkered panels around the grips and finely engraved iron trigger guards. These pistols are also featured in an article in volume 36, No. 5 from October 2014 of "Man at Arms" on page 42 and 49-50 in an article by Robert Sadler. The workings of the mechanism, purpose and functionality of the pistols are unknown. CONDITION: Both pistols are in matching condition, both very good overall. Both have been cleaned lightly and retain a mostly polished surface. Locks function well and are in original flint with all lock components being original. Stocks very good with a few light scattered storage marks, one with a small sliver replaced behind cock. PROVENANCE: S.E. Smith Collection, Robert Sadler Collection. (A) A RARE AND SUPERB PAIR OF FRENCH FLINTLOCK OFFICER'S PISTOLS BY GUILLIERON OF ST. ETIENNE, CIRCA

Lot # 1181 (Sale Order: 181 of 637)

The quality of this pair of pistols cannot be too highly praised. If they were made during the period of the great exhibitions they would surely be on display as masterpieces of the French gunmaker's art. The deeply rifled steel barrels are chiseled in high relief with a panel depicting a trophy of arms and measuring a full 2 - 1/2". The chiseling is superb and not to be confused with the usual orientalist breech casting found on French pistols made for the Ottoman market. The chiseling is all the more exquisite as the ground is pounced and gilt. The barrel tang is engraved, punched, and gilt as is the tang screw. The convex locks are chiseled with a reserve on a gilt ground, signed "Guillieron St. Etienne", cock screw chiseled and gilt. The double neck cock with border engraving. The frizzen engraved en suite. Frizzens are relieved to seal the powder in the cast and chased brass waterproof pan and feature roller bearings on the frizzen springs. The front barrel band is a work of art in chiseled steel with a many-toothed monster against a small gilt reserve. The trigger guard is chiseled in relief with foliage on a gilt ground. The steel buttcap is formed as a great bird head. The eyes chiseled in relief against a gilt ground. All screw heads chiseled and gilt. The figured walnut fullstocks superbly engraved behind the barrel tang with a wreath and rings. The wrists are extensively inlaid with an elaborate fine silver wire design of flowers. CONDITION: Barrels are polished bright in the European museum tradition. The gilding mostly intact, could be heightened. The locks are polished bright in the European fashion, as are the trigger guards and rest of mounts. The locks function as new, all small parts appearing to be original. Stocks are in excellent condition with only very minor marks and what appears to be considerable original varnish. The deeply rifled multi-groove bores are excellent. The steel ramrods appear to be the original. These magnificent pistols are pictured in one of F. Theodore Dexter's scrapbooks and are of genuine exhibition/museum quality throughout. (A) SCARCE US MODEL 1799 1ST CONTRACT NORTH & CHENEY FLINTLOCK SINGLE SHOT MARTIAL PISTOL, SN 219.

Lot # 1182 (Sale Order: 182 of 637)

Scarce original and correct 1st Contract North & Cheney pistol. Under 2,000 specimens are believed to have been made by Simeon North and Elisha Cheney of Berlin, Connecticut between 1799 and 1802. Copied after the French Model 1777 pistol, it is the first official model of pistol adopted by the United States. In recent years, it has been determined that there were two contracts, this is a first contract as it was one of the first 500 manufactured, and the initials of the makers first names are included in the markings. This example is one of only a small number of authentic extant specimens. It features a tapered smoothbore steel barrel, stamped with visible "V" near the breech. Correctly marked in all three locations with the serial number, in the correct font. Bottom of barrel marked with serial number "219", corresponding to the same numbers on both the breech plug's right side and inside the frame, where the barrel rests. Brass frame with lock on right side, brass pan, correct but probably replaced reinforced cock. The bottom of the frame stamped "S. NORTH & E. CHENEY BERLIN" in an interrupted curve around the front of the trigger guard. Brass trigger guard and buttcap, iron backstrap. Most screws appear to be original and, most marked with notches, the foremost screw on the frame is a replacement. Steel ramrod is a replacement. Partially figured one piece walnut grip with bulbous area on left side, opposite the lock, which can be seen on other early examples, as well. CONDITION: Very good condition, in comparison to other known examples. Barrel and original steel components retain a dark, even brown patina with scattered areas of freckling and marks from use, very good clear markings are correct. Brass components retain a soft polished patina with scattered marks from use, excellent and deep markings. Grip refinished and has three minor pieces replaced on right side, otherwise very good with scattered marks form use and proper shrinkage. Overall, a very nice and authentic example in exceptional condition. PROVENANCE: Ex. Howard Collection. The pistol has a round model 1811 smoothbore steel barrel stamped "P/US" on left side of breech and a faint “P” on the backstrap. The tail of the lock plate is stamped "S. NORTH/CON." and the center shows traces of "U. STATES" marking. Plain walnut half-stock terminating at end of the band, complete with wooden ramrod. (A) SCARCE BAYONETED FLINTLOCK PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA RIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO JACOB DICKERT.

Lot # 1198 (Sale Order: 198 of 637)

For another nearly identical example, see pages 309-311 of "American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II" by George D. Moller. Probably circa 1814, when two companies ordered rifles for their men. An accompanying letter from Joe Kindig states that the letters "TG" inscribed on the sideplate probably stand for Thomas Gay, a Pennsylvania inspector. There is another rifle with the same marking on the sideplate that is known to exist. He states that about a dozen of this pattern are known and that they were probably made for the volunteer militia in Southeastern Pennsylvania. There is also a document accompanying the rifle that states in Figure 5 of "Pennsylvania Game News" from February of 1965, this rifle is shown, as it was used by by Bob Housa to kill a bear. The heavy deeply rifled barrel is octagonal, except for the last 2", which are rounded, perhaps for a bayonet. There is no lug present. However, the rifle has an original bayonet with no groove for a socket and fits the rifle perfectly. The flat lockplate has beveled edges, a reinforced cock, and a diagonal line near the tail. Lockplate is stamped "SWEITZER" in the center. Brass two piece military type patchbox, flat Lancaster style sideplate inscribed with large "TG", and trigger guard with convex surfaces. Buttplate with non-faceted tang and push button patchbox release on top. Small flat brass toeplate. Plain maple stock with brass nosecap, key-fastened barrel. Complete with period wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has deep rifling and retains a spotted grey patina, touch hole relined. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and mechanism is crisp, markings excellent, retains a grey patina. Brass retains a mellow unpolished dark mustard patina. Stock is good with some scattered age cracks, especially along forend. Bayonet retains a dark pitted surface. One piece replaced above sideplate. Probably one of the finest militia Kentucky rifles known. PROVENANCE: Purchased in March, 2000 at Baltimore show from David Stewart. Robert Sadler Collection. (A) BAYONETED FLINTLOCK CONTRACT OR MILITIA RIFLE SIGNED JACOB DOLL YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.

Lot # 1200 (Sale Order: 200 of 637)

Jacob Doll was a York, Pennsylvania gunsmith. This rifle is in the style of the 1792 Contract rifles, but is not marked with US Government or Pennsylvania inspection or proofmarks. This suggests that it was possibly made for militia use. The deeply rifled iron barrel is octagonal with the last 2-7/16" being round for a bayonet attachment. The barrel is fitted with a bayonet lug on the bottom and rifle sights on the top flat. The top flat is signed "I. DOLL" in large stamped block letters. Flat unmarked lockplate with beveled edges and a molding at the tail. The brass furniture is slightly more decorative than most known examples of contract rifles. It has a four piece patchbox with convex lid and stylized acorn finial. The faceted trigger guard is fitted with an iron sling swivel, the other sling swivel is located below the first ramrod ferrule. The plain maple stock is of York County form and has a relief cheekpiece on the left side with two iron loops for a touch hole pick. The stock terminates at the end of the octagonal section and is fitted with a brass nosecap. Barrel is retained by three iron keys. The rifle is complete with a period wooden ramrod and the proper triangular socket bayonet, which is also unmarked. CONDITION: Very good, overall. Barrel retains a dark brown surface with some minor corrosion around the touch hole. Signature is crisp. Lock appears to be in its original flintlock configuration, does not hold on full cock. Lock retains a grey patina. Brass retains an unpolished mustard patina, toeplate is absent. Stock very good, retaining most of its original finish with scattered marks from use. Bayonet good and retaining a grey patina. Complete with a pewter Kentucky Rifle Association tag inscribed "President's Display 2015". A fine York, Pennsylvania military style rifle.
