(A) EARLY FULLSTOCK RELIEF-CARVED KENTUCKY LONGRIFLE ATTRIBUTED TO WOLFGANG HAGA.

Lot # 1201 (Sale Order: 201 of 637)

This rifle was prominently displayed as part of the 2018 Powder Horn Exhibit at Fort Pitt Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For an example by the same hand, see rifle number 76 on pages 203 and 204 in the book "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in its Golden Age" by Joe Kindig, Jr. Kindig attributes this rifle as being made by someone with a close association to Wolfgang Haga. The rifle was clearly made in the Reading, Pennsylvania area. Kindig attributes the example shown to be an early Wolfgang Haga. The full length rifle octagonal barrel has a dovetailed brass front blade sight and an iron rear sight. There is also an empty sight dovetail towards the breech. The flat handmade lockplate has a groove at the tail and is unmarked. The brass furniture includes a classic Haga style Reading four piece patchbox terminating in a pineapple finial and retained by seven screws. The thick, nearly straight buttplate measures 1-7/8" across the back and the buttplate tang has a high relief wedding band and an iron push button patchbox release. The early trigger guard is classic Berks County and surrounding it is a period brass repair to stabilize a break, and the front of it mimics the design of a shell which is carved around the barrel tang. The sideplate has beveled adges and is of the classic design attributed to Wolfgang Haga. The full length figured maple stock is of classic Roman nose, Berks County form and has relief carved panels terminating in a teardrop around the lock and the sideplate cavities. There is an early relief carved shell around the ramrod entry ferrule and around the barrel tang. The left side of the butt is decorated with relief 'C' scrolls both in front of and behind the molded relief cheekpiece. Complete with period, probably original ramrod. CONDITION: The barrel retains a spotted brown patina with some corrosion near the breech. The lock is a good, professional reconversion and retains a brown patina. Brass furniture retains an unpolished dark mustard patina. One lock screw is a replacement. Stock shows some scattered marks and retains an old finish. There are two minor pieces of wood replaced around the barrel tang. This is a very nice and very early example of a rifle attributed to the famous maker Wolfgang Haga. (A) RARE AND PUBLISHED A. CARRUTH SOUTH CAROLINA MODEL 1816 FLINTLOCK MUSKET, N. CAROLINA MARKED.

Lot # 1203 (Sale Order: 203 of 637)

A. Carruth of Greenville, South Carolina made approximately 3,031 muskets under contract between 1818-1822. Type I configuration. This gun is dated 1818 and features the lock marking of "A.CARRUTH" in a slight arch under a US eagle. The barrel has the standard inspectors marks along with "N. CAROLINA" as well as "NC". Matching 1818 date on buttplate. Of particular note, this exact gun, with the North Carolina markings, is described in detail in accompanying correspondence dated in the early 1960's between Thomas E. Holt (then secretary-treasurer of the American Society of Arms Collectors and noted contract musket expert) and Dr. H.L. Sutherland of South Carolina who was interested in the study and possible acquisition of this gun. Whether or not the sale of the gun for $350 (in 1965) to Dr. Sutherland took place is not clear. This gun is also pictured on page 48 of the book "U.S. Military Flintlock Muskets and Their Bayonets, The Later Years 1816 through the Civil War" by Peter A. Schmidt. Of paramount importance, included with this gun is original correspondence regarding payment for Carruth muskets dated 1819 to and from Colonel Decius Wadsworth and Adam Carruth. How this gun came to be marked for North Carolina is not known, regardless it could be considered a secondary Confederate long arm as flint muskets were being issued to state troops early in the war. PROVENANCE: Thomas E. Holt Collection, 1965. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have been cleaned to bright as was common during the earlier parts of the 20th century, with some areas of very minor pitting. Markings are clear. Wood has dings and handling marks, with a piece replaced on the left side of the barrel tang. Some slight age cracks in butt along grain. Mainspring is very strong, but appears original to the gun. Good mechanical function. This is a rare opportunity to obtain one of the more elusive contract guns which is accompanied by great provenance and original correspondence with the manufacturer. (A) VERY FINE LARGE MORIL, MOSMAN & BLAIR COMMERCIAL ELGIN CUTLASS PISTOL WITH SPLENDID AND ELABORAT

Lot # 1220 (Sale Order: 220 of 637)

Bowie blade measures 13" overall and 1-1/2" in width and is superbly etched with American eagle clutching arrows and leaves, further in panel Elgin's patent with a man battling a very fierce bear, holding aloft an Elgin cutlass pistol. The left side with a spray of flowers, etched "MORIL MOSMAN AND BLAIN, AMHERST, MASS.", and Lady Liberty holding aloft phrygian cap, marked "LIBERTY". Unmarked round barrel, boxlock frame with no markings, walnut bag grip, plain hammer. CONDITION: Barrel is brown with no significant corrosion. Frame is consonant with barrel. The frost etched blade is quite brilliant with all details clearly visible and only the most minor chips. Blade does not appear to have ever been sharpened except by the factory. Action functions as it should, walnut grip with old repaired crack and a small fill of old plastic wood at extreme point of rounded butt. Bore is excellent. As an American Bowie with such patriotic and fantastic frost etching, the knife itself would probably command five figures. This is spectacular Elgin cutlass pistol. (A) UNMARKED FLINTLOCK MASSACHUSETTS MILITIA PISTOL WITH MASS. MILITIA COMMISSION.

Lot # 1225 (Sale Order: 225 of 637)

For a nearly identical example, see number 123 and pages 256-257 of "Historic Pistols" by Samuel E. Smith and Edwin W. Bitter. Pistols of this type with barrels dated either 1814 or 1815 are believed to have been made late in the War of 1812 for privateers sailing from New England ports. The barrel marks are similar to those of T. French pistols made in Canton, Massachusetts. Round, smoothbore barrel deeply stamped at breech "P / RP" and "M / 1814". It is believed that this is a Massachusetts proof mark with the "P" standing for 'Proved', "M" for the state, and "RP" for inspector Rufus Perkins. Five similar pistols are known and all are unmarked, except for the barrel stamps and dates. The flat lockplate has a molding at the tail and is unmarked. Plain brass furniture, the trigger guard tang terminating in an arrow at the front. There is no sideplate, only small round escutcheons surrounding the lock screws. Complete with an original Massachusetts Militia commission for Quarter Master Sergeant dated 1813. This commission has accompanied the pistol and apparently belonged to its owner. CONDITION: Barrel has been chemically cleaned and retains a grey, lightly pitted surface. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and retains a grey patina with some pitting at the tail. Lock retaining screws are replacements. Brass retains a mellow mustard patina. Stock shows scattered marks from use and age cracks. Commission shows some minor tears, holes, and creases. A very nice militia pistol. DMGBarrel Length: 8 - 5/8"Caliber/Bore: .60 SmoothboreFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: UnmarkedModel: Massachusetts Militia PistolSerial Number: NSN
