(A) CONFEDERATE MADE COPY OF 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE MARKED MANTON, FORMER BEN MICHEL COLLECTION.

Lot # 1158 (Sale Order: 157 of 385)

This is an extremely interesting gun. The brass bands are retained by pins as opposed to band springs, as commonly found on 1841 Mississippi rifles and are of cruder manufacture. The buttplate also appears to be of Confederate manufacture. The patchbox is most likely an original 1841, however the cutout in the stock is of a different than normal patter and appears to be have been done by hand. The lock plate is marked in script “Manton”. Unusual hammer of a more sporting style and appears to have been cast. The barrel appears to be unmarked, although we have not taken the barrel out of the stock. Appears to have had a brass front sight of the standard 1841 pattern on top of the barrel, which is now missing. Small brass bayonet adapter is attached to barrel about 4" from muzzle. Large diameter ramrod. Mr. Michel’s notes state: “Confederate copy of M1841 rifle. Lockplate marked in small English letters “Manton”. Patchbox inlet with hand drill marks. Two brass bands are fastened with iron nail passing through the stock. Barrel is unmarked. Brass saber bayonet adapter with small lug.” PROVENANCE: Ben Michel collection. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina overall with some light pitting. The barrel shows evidence of having been heated at the muzzle. Front sight is missing. Barrel patina looks like it may have been artificially applied. Brass has a nice mellow color to it. Stock has dings and handling marks, showing use and age. There is a crack opposite lock. Period repair to wood above the lock. All in all a very unique gun from a well respected collection of Confederate arms. GR Barrel Length: 33" Caliber/Bore: .58 Percussion FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Manton Model: 1841 Serial Number: NSN

Lot # 1163 (Sale Order: 162 of 385)

Samuel Stull was an Ohio gunsmith who lived between 1808 and 1907. He was a farmer and a gunsmith and began making rifles at a very young age, reportedly at age 12. He spent his entire life on a farm located about 1 - 3/4 miles south of Millwood in Knox County, Ohio. He reportedly used to walk to Canton and purchase barrel blanks, which he carried home on his back. He likely farmed in the summer and practiced gunsmithing during the winter months. In 1952, 125 Stull rifles were on exhibit at the Mt. Vernon Armory. The rifle has a three stage thick walled barrel with a brass and silver front blade sight and a notched rear sight. Partially visible signature is inscribed on the top flat near the breech. The flat lockplate is engraved near the tail with a bird and in the center it is stamped "WILLM HOLLIS". The patch box release button is located towards the rear of the tombstone shaped toeplate. The inside of the patch box lid is inscribed "G. Long Steubenville" this was probably the owner's name. This rifle has a full length stock of figured maple in the typical mid 18th century Ohio style. Complete with its original wooden ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel has an overall pitted surface and retains a dark patina. Signature is very light and only partially visible. Some heavy corrosion near breech and bolster. Silver inlays retain a mellowing patina and some pins have been replaced. Brass furniture retains a mellowing patina and shows some scattered denting and wear. Patch box lid has been broken and repaired near the hinge. Stock shows scattered marks from use, a crack stemming from the nose cap and extending into the ramrod channel, and there are few other scattered marks from use. A very nice Ohio rifle by a quality maker. DMG Barrel Length: 45 - 1/4" Caliber/Bore: .56 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Samuel Stull Model: Kentucky Rifle Serial Number: NSN

(A) WONDERFUL PRESENTATION CAPTURED CONFEDERATE USED ROBBINS & LAWRENCE 1841 "MISSISSIPPI" 1841 .54

Lot # 1167 (Sale Order: 166 of 385)

At the outbreak of the war, there were 6,000 Robbins & Lawrence model 1841 "Mississippi" rifles in southern arsenals due to the government response to John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry. They were distributed evenly among the Augusta Arsenal in Georgia, Mount Vernon Arsenal in Alabama and the Baton Rouge Arsenal in Louisiana. This gun features matching 1849 dates on the lock and barrel tang. Also on this gun is a Boyle, Gamble & MacFee bayonet adapter ring for a saber bayonet. The adapter ring is well marked "B.G.&M./ RICHMOND VA." under the lug, which has a bayonet mating number of "30" stamped into it. More interestingly, there is a post-Civil War presentation engraved into the patch box which reads in script: "This Enfield Rifle/ has been in the possession of the undersigned since the/ morning of the battle & victory of Roanoke Island Feb. 8th 1862/ It was captured by a soldier of the 51st Regt NY Vol Infantry/ the captor having shot and killed the rebel soldier from whom it was taken/ Presented to/ Henry A. Spaulding by his friend E. W. Buck, M.D./ May 10th 1870". While this gun is clearly not an Enfield rifle, the inscription is period and correct. E.W. Buck, or Ephraim W. Buck is listed in the 51st NY Inf muster roll as being the surgeon for the unit from October of 1861 until May of 1862. No definitive information on Henry A. Spaulding, possibly a prominent silversmith from New York City. Further research should yield interesting results. The battle of Roanoke Island, North Carolina was an amphibious engagement which also consisted of a land attack resulting in the capture of several forts and approximately 2,500 Confederate soldiers. All in all an incredibly interesting gun with a great history. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina, having been lightly cleaned at some point in the past. All markings are clear. Light pitting overall. Brass has a pleasing color to it. The trigger guard, butt plate and patch box show signs of having been silver plated. There are traces left on the butt plate and trigger guard. The patch box retains most of the plating. The engraved presentation on the patch box is a little worn but legible with careful study. Wood has some dings and handling marks with clear cartouches on the left side, opposite the lock. Fine mechanical function. Bore has strong rifling with pitting. Introduced towards the end of 1864, these guns feature a 33 inch barrel with a "pinched" front sight as found on Richmond carbines. The first 200 delivered in August of 1...more864 were assembled from "old parts" or rather parts taken from battlefield captured and damaged weapons. This gun most likely being from this delivery. This gun has a proper Richmond made stock with "mules foot" in the lock mortise. 33" Richmond made barrel with "pinched" front sight and a "broken P". The barrel is dated 1864. Standard low profile 1863 dated Richmond lock. Brass buttplate and nose cap. Ramrod appears original. CONDITION: Retains a pleasing patina, although the steel parts have been lightly cleaned at some point and have some minor pitting. Markings are clear, barrel date is worn but legible. Brass has a pleasing mellow color to it. Wood has some dings and handling marks and some age cracks along the grain of the butt. Good mechanical function. The mainspring is a modern replacement, and one of the lock screws is too long. The bore is dirty with some rust and pitting, currently .60 caliber with no rifling. Among all the Richmond products, the 2 band "short rifles" are the most difficult to find.
