10 FT. X 7 FT. BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST CANVAS SHOW BANNER.

Lot # 1185 (Sale Order: 184 of 385)

William F. Cody and Nate Salsbury, in equal partnership formed the "Buffalo Bill Wild West Show" in 1883. The first show took place on May 19th in Omaha Nebraska. The show successfully toured Europe eight times between the years 1887-1892 performing before British Royalty and European elite. In 1899 using two trains with a total of 50 railcars transporting a cast of more than 500 performers, dozens of horses, a herd of over 30 buffalo, and grandstand seating for 20,000 spectators. The show covered 11,000 miles in 200 days, giving 341 performances in 132 U.S. cities and towns. The operation generated its own electricity, staffed its own fire department, and served three hot meals a day for the entire staff and crew. Expenses climbed to over $4,000 per day. Admission was .50 cents per person. It has been said that during that time, Buffalo Bill Cody was the most famous and recognized person in the world and the "Wild West Show" being the greatest show on earth. In the decade to come, audiences began to decline. Motion pictures captivated public attention. Shooting declined as a spectator sport while the popularity of baseball and football soared. On October 29, 1901, after finishing a show in North Carolina, tragedy struck when the Wild West Show's train collided with an oncoming freight train, killing hundreds of livestock and seriously injuring the show's star, Annie Oakley. A year later Cody's founding partner, Nate Salsbury died on Christmas Eve, 1902. In 1909 Cody sold a one-third interest of the show for $50,000 to former employee and cast member Gordon William "Pawnee Bill" Lillie. The new partnership developed a show performance titled "The Two Bill's Show" The show toured the United States for the next four years, with the closing performance in Denver Colorado in 1913. William Cody dies on January 10, 1917 in Denver Colorado. The large advertisement offer in this sale is believed to be an original display or show banner used during the "Two Bill's Show" performances. Smaller original lithograph posters featuring the same image and titled: "The Two Bill's Show" are known to exist. Measuring 7 ft. wide by 10 ft. tall. This rare original painted canvas titled: "BUFFALO BILL ORIGINAL WILD WEST" boasting a very colorful American Indian, kneeling and taking aim with his Winchester Repeating rifle is most dramatic. The upper right corner features a monotone profile of William F. Cody. CONDITION: Excellent plus. Colors are vibrant. Shows modest wear with minimum staining and no visible repairs. Overall a very desirable "Wild West Show" original show banner. -MKS-

1905 OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING BY "FRONTIER ARTIST" A.D.M. COOPER.

Lot # 1186 (Sale Order: 185 of 385)

Astley David Middleton Cooper was born in St Louis, Missouri on December 22, 1856, son of Fannie Clark O’Fallon and Dr. David M. Cooper, a successful surgeon. At an early age, A. D. M. Cooper was influenced by close family friend George Catlin and his paintings of American Indians. After attending Washington University, Cooper traveled throughout the West as an illustrator for Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. He was in the West at age twenty during the Custer massacre and became famous as a painter of the Old West and American Indians. In 1879 he moved to San Francisco and became active with the local art association. Upon establishing a studio, he was in demand as a portraitist and painted several studies of General U. S. Grant. In 1883 he moved to East San Jose. As well as a painter, he was also an accomplished violinist and often sat in with local orchestras. In his later years he painted allegorical scenes with semi-nude women and several trompe l'oeil studies. On rare occasions he signed his paintings "A. Dubernet" or "David Middleton." In his more lucid moments, Cooper was capable of producing masterpieces; however, due to his affinity for alcohol his paintings vary in quality. He was known to often pay his saloon debts with his paintings. Cooper died in San Jose, California on September 10, 1924. Among A.D.M Cooper's many famous clients was William Fredrick "Buffalo Bill" Cody. The trompe l'oeil style oil on canvas painting being offered for sale is believed to have been commissioned by Cody. Completed in 1905 and signed A.D.M Cooper, the work features a three dimensional still life of an American Buffalo, with vignettes of American Indian artifacts and weapons. Also featuring carte de visite views of Buffalo Bill Cody and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok. The Indian portrait located on the left side is identified as Sioux Indian Red Cloud and the image on the right as Indian princess Prairie Flower. The painting is framed with a beautiful 7" wide vintage molding. A.D.M. Coopers paintings have been exhibited at the Mechanics' Institute (San Francisco); Triton Museum (Santa Clara); San Jose Historical Museum; Western Art Museum (Tulsa, OK); Buffalo Bill Historical Center; Stanford Museum; Oakland Museum; Gilcrease Institute; Smithsonian Institution; Whitney Gallery of Western Art (Cody, WY); Veterans Memorial Building (Oakland); Santa Cruz City Museum; Caesar's Palace (Las Vegas); San Jose Convention Center (VIP Lounge); California Historical Society, and the Irma Hotel (Cody, WY). CONDITION: Excellent with no visible damage or repair. Colors are vibrant. Frame is excellent with lovely patina. This painting is considered one of Cooper's masterful works. -MKS-

OVERSIZED SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH OF ANNIE OAKLEY AS THE WESTERN GIRL, ACCOMPANIED BY A SHOT 1890 HALF PEN

Lot # 1187 (Sale Order: 186 of 385)

This is last of a series by the White Studio portraits taken by Edward Thayer Monroe. In some ways it is the most stunning, and the most unusual. Annie is wearing her silk scarf and Western Girl wig. But note her left eye; she suffered from periodic eye infections exacerbated by gunpowder residue and smoke, yet she remains confident and proud of her appearance. A very fine, clear Annie Oakley autograph on verso. The image is 8" x 6". The card is soiled around the edges with marginal bumps and chips. The picture is excellent. The portrait is from the collection of Bess Edwards, grand-niece of Annie Oakley, and will be accompanied by a signed letter from her authenticating this item as described. Accompanying the portrait is a British copper, half penny shot by Annie Oakley. The face of the coin is stamped "OAKLEY". Interestingly, Annie performed a private shooting exhibition at the Royal Oak Hotel in London on December 27, 1890. There is an account published in the "Shooting and Kennel News of London" describing her shooting coins and marbles from the air using a 10-shot repeating rifle. The date of this coin is also 1890. The coin is pictured on page 128 of R.L. Wilson's book "BUFFALO BILLS WILD WEST/AN AMERICAN LEGEND". CONDITION: Both coin and portrait are in fine condition. The portrait has some light staining with the left top corner tattered and the left bottom corner trimmed to an angle. -MKS-

-MKS-

RARE CARTE VISTA PHOTOGRAPH OF "BLACK BART"

Lot # 1189 (Sale Order: 188 of 385)

Charles Earl Boles aka "Black Bart" born in Norfolk, England in 1829, date of death is unknown, last seen on February 28, 1888. Black Bart was an American Outlaw noted for the poetic messages he left behind after two of his robberies. Often called Charley by his friends, he was also known as Charles (or C.E.) Bolton. Considered a gentleman bandit with a reputation for style and sophistication, he was one of the most notorious stagecoach robbers to operate in and around Northern California and southern Oregon during the 1870s and 1880s. In late 1849 he and his two brothers David and James joined in the California Gold Rush, prospecting in the North Fork of the American River near Sacramento. During the Civil War Boles enlisted as a private in Company B, 116th Illinois Regiment, becoming a First Sergeant within a year of service. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg and took part in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was discharged a brevet first lieutenant on June 7,1865 with his regiment in Washington D.C. In 1867 he returned to prospecting for gold in Idaho and Montana. In a letter to his wife in 1871, he told her of an unpleasant encounter with Wells, Fargo & Company agents and vowed to exact revenge. His wife never heard from him again. "Black Bart" proceeded to rob Wells Fargo stagecoaches at least 28 times across northern California between 1875 and 1883. He only left two poems, but this came to be considered his signature and ensured his fame. Black Bart was quite successful, often times taking thousands of dollars a year. This "Carte Vista" photograph measures 5 - 1/4 inches x 8 - 1/2 inches and is titled "Black Bart" at the bottom. This is a known image of James Earl Boles, aka "Black Bart". CONDITION: Fine overall. Slightly faded with moderate staining. Overall a very presentable image. -MKS-
