(N) SCARCE AND DESIRABLE HIGH CONDITION MARLIN ROCKWELL MODEL 1917 “DIGGER” MACHINE GUN WITH SIDE CO

Lot # 1026 (Sale Order: 26 of 385)

This is a fine high condition example of Marlin Rockwell’s further development and improvement of the earlier "digger" machine gun to make it more versatile and appropriate to specialized applications such as in the Navy, as well as on tanks and aircraft. The signature reciprocating arm under the barrel gas block has been replaced with an in-line gas piston system. I called this gun a “digger” in the title, but this is an intentional misnomer. Soldiers under field conditions immediately recognized this as an improvement which allowed the gun to be employed lower to the ground providing less of a target silhouette. Cooling fins on the barrel were also a welcome feature which enabled longer periods of sustained fire before “cooldown” breaks. This gun is marked on top of receiver as well as on non-matching barrel “MARLIN ARMS CORPORATION NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT CAL-30 U.S.A.”. Marked on upper trigger bar, “USN 7947”. Marlin Rockwell took over the manufacturing rights to the Colt Model 1914 digger from Colt in 1916, and began producing this improved design in 1917. The sliding door on the right side gives easier access to the action and is an immediate telltale sign of a Marlin digger. CONDITION: Overall finish and appearance is extremely fine deep lustrous blue finish thinning to gray patina at the high edges with a bit of pitting at the front lower right edge of the receiver plate and a bit of brown pitting on the barrel. Mechanics are crisp and positive. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright with strong rifling. Bolt face is extremely fine. Wood hand grip is extremely fine with light handling marks. This is a scarce model of a very popular machine gun design and will no doubt find a deserving place in the collection of a World War I enthusiast who wants to shoot their guns as well as display them. An extremely attractive and very “modern looking” for its day machine gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) EXTREMELY RARE ORIGINAL FULLY TRANSFERABLE AUSTEN MK II XP MACHINE GUN (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1030 (Sale Order: 30 of 385)

Extremely rare and very much sought after fully transferable Diecasters Ltd manufactured Austen MK II machine gun. Visible numbers are matching between bolt and receiver. The Austen is an Australian improvement on the Sten design which incorporates a folding stock and an enclosed telescoping mainspring after the manner of the German MP-40. Even the contours of the handgrips and grip panels closely resemble the MP-40. The addition of the forward vertical pistol grip undoubtedly was inspired by the American Thompson. Particularly noteworthy in the production of this gun was the use of diecasting to fabricate the magazine housing and top part of the magazine as well as end cap to expedite the manufacturing process. The resulting Austen (Australian Sten) machine gun is a very comfortable select-fire machine gun to shoot. Includes three 28 round original Austen magazines. This Mark II version incorporates flutes in the front of the main receiver housing to cool the barrel more effectively and a bayonet stud. It incorporates a brass flip-up rear peep sight graduated “100” and “200”. The shoulder loop retaining latch is a button at the rear of the receiver. ATF Registry shows simply "STEN” in the manufacture’s block with correct model information. If buyer desires correction/update to the registry can be requested upon paper form registration transfer. Manufacturer’s logo “DC” within a circle is on left side of receiver along with “Austen” “S.M.G.” “MK. II. XP.” Horizontal “Single” and “Auto” selector button in the side of the lower receiver reminiscent of the MP-44. Safety is in the same manner as the MP-40, a simple cut-out slot in the side of the receiver tube to hold the bolt back. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine original smooth blue finish on the barrel and receiver tube, with original dark and light green camouflage paint added overall excluding the barrel and grip panels. Magazine also incorporates this camouflage paint. This paint is flaking away exposing the metal beneath. Actually accentuates the “combat look” of this weapon. Grips extremely fine. Mechanics are crisp. Bore is extremely fine, shiny and bright. Bolt face is very extremely fine. This is a select fire machine gun. A wonderful combination of the ease of production of the Sten with good ideas borrowed from other successful designs. This is a select fire machine gun. An original condition incredibly rare and fine specimen as a transferable and Curio and Relic eligible gun. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. (N) EXCEPTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE GERMAN MP-44 MACHINE GUN WITH SLING (CURIO AND RELIC).

Lot # 1032 (Sale Order: 32 of 385)

Extremely fine and attractive ERMA manufactured MP44. Visible numbers are matching exclusive of operating rod and bolt. Bolt is later type with cut-out for extractor. Nazi proof marks on numerous parts with "WaA" proofs as well. Underside of receiver eagle over "280" indicating ERMA manufacture along with "cos" indicating Mertzwerke, which was a sheet metal firm subcontractor. This weapon was manufactured in 1944 as is indicated on the left side of receiver. Barely discernible cartouche forward of rear sling slot on left side. Original leather sling and one 30 round Nazi marked Original “MP-44” magazine included as is an original “Sturmgewehr 44 (StG44)” Gebrauchsanleitung (Instructions for use) booklet dated Dec 1944. The MP44 series of weapons was the first assault rifle design which uses an intermediate cartridge; the 7.92x33mm cartridge was not so powerful as the 8x57mm full power rifle round but significantly more powerful than the 9mm Parabellum pistol round. This rifle was a highly effective improvement over the standard bolt action rifle because not only was it semi-automatic with a large magazine capacity but it also could provide automatic fire fulfilling a soldier's needs in many situations. The fact that the cartridge was smaller in length and in weight meant that the solders could carry more ammunition readily available. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is near excellent high quality and faithful refinish preserving excellent clear markings with the barely discernible occasional mark under the refinish. Right side of receiver forward of ejector port is marked “GERMANY” in tiny letters. Wood is very attractive, lightly sanded and refinished leaving the color as it would have looked upon manufacture. Action is very smooth. Bore is near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt face is also near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. This is a select fire machine gun. The MP44 was in an important historical development in the field of military weapons and the condition of this one makes it an outstanding opportunity for the World War II collector/investor. PROVENANCE: This weapon was at one time in the personal collection of noted firearms historian and author William Easterly. (N) EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CONDITION BERETTA MODEL 38A MACHINE GUN AMNESTY REGISTERED BY BARRY GOLDWATER

Lot # 1042 (Sale Order: 42 of 385)

This Beretta Model 38A machine gun is an interesting piece. It was amnesty registered by conservative Republican icon Barry Goldwater, who ran for President against Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 presidential election. A copy of the original unredacted amnesty registration form is included with this lot. Visible numbers are matching on barrel shroud, receiver, bolt, and stock. No manufacturer’s markings on top receiver tube, and barely discernible change to the sheen of the metal indicates they were professionally removed. Even looking very closely, one cannot discern loss of metal normally associated with post-War alteration. Two original 40 round magazines are included with this lot. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine to near excellent with partial refinish on top of receiver tube with some light scattered pitting, with a small area of grinding to the top of the shroud forward of the serial number and Italian crown proofmark. Other metal parts do not appear to be refinished. Charging handle block is a plum color indicating refinish. Unsanded original matching wood is magnificent, with handling marks and a small ding on right side near pistol grip, and a barely discernible 3” elliptical crack at wrist on right side starting just below the rear receiver cap. Stock is strong and completely serviceable, but this needed to be called out as this cataloger catalogs guns like I would like to be informed as if I were contemplating purchasing the gun. Magazines are fine, black refinished over light pitting. Bore near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt is also near excellent. Mechanics are crisp. The Beretta machine guns of World War II are righteously considered the best of their era. Accurate, controllable, durable, and reliable. Select fire guns with two triggers, one for full-auto, and the other for semi-auto fire. Any machine gun enthusiast who has fired a Beretta 38A would like to shoot one again. This specimen combines all the positive of this model with direct linkage to a Republican political icon. THIS IS A NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT ITEM AND REQUIRES BATF APPROVAL PRIOR TO TRANSFER. THIS ITEM IS FULLY TRANSFERABLE ON AN ATF FORM 3 OR 4 AS CURIO AND RELIC ELIGIBLE. (N) MARVELOUSLY ACCESSORIZED DLO REGISTERED SIDEPLATE BROWNING 1917A1 MACHINE GUN.

Lot # 1045 (Sale Order: 45 of 385)

The easily recognizable Browning Model 1917 and 1917A1 saw widespread service in combat during two of history's biggest conflicts, World War I and II. While the Model 1917 saw little combat usage due to its late arrival at the end of World World I, the updated Model 1917A1 saw much multi-role usage with infantry, armored fighting vehicles, combat aircraft, and naval vessels with the Allies during World War II, and continued to be used up into the Korean War. Phased out of US military usage in the 1960's due to the adoption of the substantially lighter M60 light machine gun, the Model 1917A1 remained in use by Third World countries well within the late 20th century. This example of the 1917A1's receiver was manufactured by DLO and reads "NO 309546 U.S. INSP. (Rock Island Arsenal ordnance stamp) F.K./ BROWNING MACHINE GUN/ U.S. CAL .30 M1917A1/ MANF'D BY ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL/ PATENT 1,621,476/ DOUGLAS L. OEFINGER STAMFORD CT U.S.A". Inspection stamp "F.K." indicating inspection by Assistant Foreman Frank Krack who worked for Rock Island Arsenal between 1941 and 1946. Early World War I 1917 rear sight with multiple aperture sight disk is present. The receiver and jacket have been professionally restored in a green parkerized finish. Rear sight appears to have been reblued during its period of use. This 1917A1 is complete with an absolutely outstanding assortment of accessories that include a carrying case, restored 1917A1 tripod and cradle, two replacement barrels, extra barrel extension, U.S. GI ordnance tool box, one Argentine belt loader, one contemporary belt loader, four ammo cans, 16 cloth ammo belts, field manual, a 27" x 38" reproduction print of Norman Rockwell's "Lets Give Him Enough and on Time" World War II poster, three books "Browning Machine Gun Shop Manual" and "Hard Rain" by Frank Iannamico as well as "The Browning Machine Gun, Volume II" by Dolf L. Goldsmith, and a plethora of other parts and accessories to accompany this specimen. CONDITION: Metal components retain 90%+ of their reapplied parkerized finish, showing minimal wear and handling to the finish. Brass components retain a pleasing brown patina. Bore is bright and clean, showing strong rifling throughout. Tripod and cradle retain most of their reapplied paint, showing small concentrated areas of wear to the paint. Overall, this a fine example of the Model 1917A1 machine gun that's variants served the U.S. military through both World Wars and that, with all the additional parts, components, and accessories, is sure to keep one firing at the range!
