(A) SPRINGFIELD OFFICERS MODEL 1875 .45-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE.

Lot # 1216 (Sale Order: 215 of 385)

During the year 1874 to early 1875 several ranking U.S. Army officers had the idea for the Springfield Armory to build them a "made to order" sporting rifle using the service Model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield as the platform. Eventually the number of requests to purchase these special-order sporting rifles became burdensome. During June of 1875 the acting Chief of Ordnance, Major S.C. Lyford determined the specifications for a "standardized" sporting rifle to be manufactured by the Armory for private purchase by commissioned officers of the armed services as well as certain high ranking civilians. On August 2, 1875 an advertising circular was prepared to describe the new "Officers Model 1875". The circular in part defined the weight of the rifle at about 8 pounds, .45-70 caliber, length of barrel (all round) at 26", stock checkered "fore" and "aft", the breech tipped with a white metal (engraved) cap, plain "buckhorn" rear barrel sight, (like the service sight) a stock mounted rear sight and a fold down globe front sight, single set trigger, wood "ramrod" for cleaning mounted to the gun, the breech-block, receiver, hammer, lock, band, and the heel of the buttplate plainly engraved. Cost of the rifle $36.00. Unfortunately none of these guns were serialized so names of people that ordered specific guns is unknown, however Springfield Armory manufacturing records documents a total of 490 Officer Model 1875 rifles were build between 1875-1885. The rifle being offered in this lot has all the features as described above. In addition, the rifle has the scarce, early first type rear aperture mid-range sight made and provided by the Sharps Rifle Co. Further information has been provided by esteemed collector C.Vance Haynes. Mr. Haynes extensive 52 year research of Officer's Model Rifles has determined these guns were built in six lots, and can be identified by assembly numbers found on certain parts. This rifle is believed to have been 1 of 65 guns built in lot #2, during April 1876 - June 1877. CONDITION: Fine overall. All metal parts are a gunmetal/grey patina with only traces of original finishes in protected areas. Bore is dark. Action is tight and crisp. Stock is sound with heavily worn checkering and added finish. Visible inspector cartouche on bottom of stock. Overall a well used but not abused historic rifle. -MKS- Barrel Length: 26" Caliber/Bore: .45-70 Government FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Springfield Model: Trapdoor Officers Model Serial Number: NSN

(A) RARE AND DESIRABLE CONFEDERATE KEEN & WALKER CARBINE.

Lot # 1217 (Sale Order: 216 of 385)

Only 282 of these guns were produced in Danville, Virginia. The guns were delivered to the Danville Arsenal between May and September of 1862. Unrecognized by many authorities, there are actually two variations of these guns (although it is noted in Dr. John Murphy's book on Confederate Carbines & Musketoons). The first variation has a "P" proof on the side of the barrel. The second is completely unmarked externally, which in this catalogers opinion points to one of the 2 later deliveries in September of 1862. This gun is of the seldom seen 2nd variation. The side plate has a great dark color to it due to the high copper content of the brass. As is normal, the side plate is of a different shade than the receiver. Correctly marked internally with Roman numerals. Usually these guns have a 22 - 1/2" barrel, however this gun has a 21" barrel which appears to have been this length for a very long time. The dovetailed front sight is missing. Period carved into the right side of the stock are the initials "J.R.H.", most likely the Confederate Cavalryman to whom the gun was issued. CONDITION: The gun retains a pleasing patina overall with a nice pleasing patina to the brass and some light surface rust and minor pitting on the barrel. Some traces of blue on the breech block. The tail end of the lower tang is broken but the piece is present. Bore is worn with some rust and pitting. Fine mechanical function. Wood has some dings and handling marks as to be expected. There is a "C S" stamped into the top of the buttplate which appears to have been done a long time ago, but is not original to the gun. The stock to receiver fit has a gap, looks like the tangs were slightly bent at one time. There are some stress marks in the brass upper tang. All in all a very presentable example of a hard to find Confederate breech loading carbine, in the scarcer unmarked configuration. GR Barrel Length: 21" Caliber/Bore: .54 Paper Cartridge FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Keen & Walker Model: Carbine Serial Number: NSN

SCHULTZE GUNPOWDER SHOTSHELL DISPLAY BOARD.

Lot # 1226 (Sale Order: 225 of 385)

Offered is a pre-1898 all original Schultze Gunpowder Shotshell display board. The address on the board was vacated in 1898 with probably manufacturing circa 1870s. Board measures 30 - 1/2" in length by 22 - 1/2" in width and 2 - 1/4" in depth. Seventeen different unloaded shotshell hulls are mounted to a manila board with black printing, each a different brand that used the Schultze powder. In the center is an early Schultze gunpowder can with the familiar clenched fist and lightning bolt logo. Between the cartridges are numerous wads, printed with different labels. It is framed in oak with double oak lines. CONDITION: There a few spots of wear on the can and a few minor blemishes with overall toning. Glass was replaced at one time and is no longer handblown, as it would have been originally. It is wood backed with canvas straps and new clamps, all of which were done when the glass was replaced. When they screwed in the new brackets, two of the screws came through the liner. Mentioned to be as specific as possible as no damage was done to the board. In our research, we could not find a single type board offered for sale, ever. This would be an incredible display piece in any gun room. PROVENANCE: From the collection of Nathan Posner, former owner of the San Francisco Gun Exchange and most recently on display at the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum of Cody, Wyoming. Comes with custom handbuilt wooden crate for shipping and/or transportation.
