EXTREMELY RARE, ONE OF TWO KNOWN, WINCHESTER CARTRIDGE BOARD BUILT FOR WINCHESTER'S NEW HAVEN & SF

Lot # 1337 (Sale Order: 234 of 323)

Only a few examples of this style of board are speculated to exist, with the belief being that they were manufactured circa 1880, possibly for either executive or exposition use. Gilded wood frame with beaded inner border and modified egg-and-tongue moulding with floral vignettes. Blue cloth background reads "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" with gilt lettering in a Western font across top in playful ribbon, and "NEW HAVEN. CONN" in straight line across bottom. Unlabelled cartridges are arranged in a decagon with an inverted star in decagon, with center of star displaying a shotgun shell. 6 primer tins are present at top of board, filling in some of the negative space that the Winchester ribbon creates. Underneath ribbon are 2 rows of shells that following the flow of the lettering. Bottom corners decorated with bullet examples, both cast lead and patch, and shotgun shells, including cutaway hulls. Decagon is flanked by two trees of cartridges. Shadowbox expands slightly from rear, and would fit nicely into a slotted alcove. CONDITION: Excellent. Frame retains the vast majority of the gilt with some separation at corners and crazing. Brass is shiny and colorful, while shot shells appear to have been rolled in some kind of sparkling substance to add eye appeal. Rear of board is sealed with tape and paint over the nails, and a masonite backing. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made.

CORRECTION: Upon further research it is determined only two of these very unique and extremely rare cartridge boards were produced. Winchester built one for display in their New Haven, Connecticut office and the second one for display in the Winchester San Francisco Office. Pictured in the 1990 Edition of "American Sporting Advertisements" by Bob & Beverly Strauss.

Nominal...more measurements are 5/8" frame thickness, 74 - 1/4" tall, width of 17 - 3/4". Interior with 4 racks for resting long guns, 5 each, totaling 20, with "WINCHESTER" logos facing exterior. Walrus Manufacturing logo on underside of base. Examples of these very rare cabinets can be seen in "Winchester Rarities" by Tom Webster, page 201. These cabinets are extremely rare and very few are speculated to still exist. Included is a very interesting copy of a piece Winchester advertising that talks about these cases, trying to get retailers to purchase them. CONDITION: Good. Barrel rests and lock have become detached but are included. Wood appears to have been very carefully sanded and revarnished, and there is some wood fill around a few spots of termite damage. Wood has bumps and bruises throughout with some chips that are somewhat heavier than would be expected. Still a highly attractive piece. This is not a standard shippable item and will require 3rd party shipping or pickup arrangements to be made.
