Nitre blued center pin and screws. 1-piece plain walnut grips. Matching serial numbers observed on frame, trigger guard, butt, cylinder, and barrel underneath ejector rod housing. However, the letter identifies serial numbers 16254, 16256, 16258, 16260, and 16261, which were all shipped with nickel plating. Given the fact that a 1-piece wood grip was the standard for that time, it can be assumed that this revolver was shipped with original nickel plating and wood grip. Numbers in grip strap panel matches the gun's serial numbers. This revolver once was part of the famous George R. Repaire Collection and is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Mr. Repaire dated November 14, 1978, to Tom Odom of Huntsville, Alabama, wherein he states he purchased this revolver at least 27 years prior to that date at the San Francisco Gun Exchange for $388.00. He states that he parted with it reluctantly. In addition, there is a copy of an advertising page from The Gun Report, date not indicated, for Ron Ogan of Ogan’s Antiques, well-known Colt single action dealer, advertising this revolver for sale. Ogan states in the ad that Mr. Odom had sold this revolver to a Mr. Richard Atkinson, a well-known collector, and he further states that this exact revolver is pictured on p. 18 of the book "The Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Kopec, Graham & Moore and that the barrel address is pictured on p. 15 of that same book. There is also a copy of a photograph of this revolver in its case with the cartridge block filled with cartridges. CONDITION: Excellent plus, and retaining nearly all of the original nickel plating, with appropriate age-related light flaking and light handling marks throughout. Flaking is mostly on left side of muzzle, left side of frame, left side of hammer, and on cylinder. Screws and center pin are unmolested and retain bright original peacock blue Nitre bluing. Grips are original, well-fitting, and show no major signs of distress other than light handling marks near butt. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is overall bright and lightly frosted with sharp rifling and modest abrasion near muzzle from use with corrosive black powder cartridges. Case is very good with storage and handling marks throughout. Lining retains a pleasing dark purple color with age-related impressions from the gun being in the case for an extended period of time. An extremely fine and early Colt Civilian Single Action Revolver with an extremely scarce American walnut casing worthy of display. (A) NOTED COLLECTOR MEL GUY'S LEGENDARY COLT "BUNTLINE SPECIAL" SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER

Lot # 1263 (Sale Order: 160 of 323)

"The now famous moniker for a long-barreled Colt, ""Buntline Special"", was first introduced and made legend by a 1931 Western Novel written by Stuart Lake titled ""Wyatt...more Earp / Frontier Marshall"". In the book, Lake makes claim Edward Zane Carroll Judson, author of dime novels and better known by his pen name, ""Ned Buntline"", special ordered five Colt Single Action Army revolvers with extra-long barrels and detachable stocks from the Colt factory in 1876. According to Lake, Judson or ""Buntline"" gave these five special Colts to Dodge City, Kansas lawmen, including Wyatt Earp as gifts of his appreciation. Unfortunately, this claim has never been factually proven, or disproven for that matter. Nonetheless, the story made for a best-selling read on the life of Wyatt Earp. During the 1950 era when T.V. Westerns became the number one source of entertainment in America, both Hollywood and Colt Firearms capitalized on the Ned Buntline story. One of the most popular shows of the period was ""The Life and Times of Wyatt Earp"" starring actor Hugh O'Brian playing the role of Wyatt Earp. The actual star of the show became Wyatt Earp's Colt Revolver known as the ""Buntline Special"". This show launched many other T.V. shows and Hollywood movies immortalizing Wyatt Earp and his long-barreled Colt. It wasn't until this time that Colt actually used the term ""Buntline"" to describe any of their revolvers and began manufacturing special limited numbers of large bore Single Action Armies with 12-inch barrels, naming them ""Buntline Specials."" These models became in such demand that several toy companies manufactured replica “Buntline” cap guns, and Colt began producing smaller frame revolvers chambered in .22 caliber with “Buntline Scout” marked on their 9-1/2 inch barrels. Though Colt didn't begin this marketing campaign until the 1950s, what advanced students and collectors have known all along is Colt did indeed build a very limited number of Single Action Army revolvers, with special frames, sights, extra length barrels and accessory detachable stocks beginning in 1876. Colt originally introduced these special guns at the Historically important American 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, calling them ""Buggy Specials"". The limited production of these unique revolvers became one of the rarest models Colt ever produced and are highly coveted by collectors today.

(A) HIGH CONDITION BLUE SMITH AND WESSON AMERICAN SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 1269 (Sale Order: 166 of 323)

The American Model was the first big bore cartridge revolver made in the United States. This is a First Model, of which approximately 8000 were made between 1870-72. It is estimated that only about 10% were made with a factory blue finish with the balance of production being of nickel finish. It is not an "oil hole" model, making it a Second Variation First Model. It is a standard model in all respects with an 8" barrel, blue finish, six shot, single action, case color hammer and trigger guard, smooth two piece walnut grips and no lanyard. The top of the barrel is stamped with English barrel address. The caliber is .44 S&W American. The majority of these early large bore guns saw hard use and to find an example that is both factory blue and in near mint original condition makes this a true rarity. You will find the matching assembly number 415 stamped on the back of the cylinder as well as the barrel and latch. The matching serial number, 6803, is also stamped inside the right grip panel. CONDITION: This revolver does not appear to have seen much use. The factory blue is still bright and the grips straps still retain majority of this high polish factory finish. There is some simple flaking of finish on cylinder and barrel while the frame retains the majority of this bright blue. If one were to place a number on remaining finish, it would have to be around 90% but, as stated, blue loss is simply finish flaking, not wear. The bore is near mint and bright. The action is as crisp as new. The original grips are near mint with original oil finish. The dulling color is intact on hammer and traces on guard. This has to be one of the finest surviving blue First Models extant and would be near impossible to find a finer all original example of this scarce big bore Wild West sixgun. Barrel Length: 8" Caliber/Bore: .44 S&W American FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Smith and Wesson Model: Model 3 Serial Number: 6083

Lot # 1274 (Sale Order: 171 of 323)

1874 vintage Colt Cavalry Single Action Army revolver, serial number 3735. 7 - 1/2" barrel chambered in .45 Colt with script single line barrel address with serifs on either end, blade front sight, and "V" frame notch rear. O.W. Ainsworth inspection mark, letter "A" observed on trigger guard, cylinder, and backstrap. Government inspection proof mark "P" observed on barrel and cylinder. Left side of frame is marked "U.S." Frame is marked "C" inside hammer channel. Cylinder pin and retaining screw are frozen in place with cylinder pin partially forward covering "A" inspector mark on barrel, making removal of cylinder for observing "A" inspector mark on cylinder faces difficult to examine. Single piece plain walnut grips. Comes with an unmarked 1900s era hand tooled, chamois lined commercial holster fitted for a Colt 5 - 1/2" SAA. Complete with John A. Kopec letter documenting serial number 3735 with following comments: A driver's license number has been scratched on buttstrap and butt screw is a modern replacement, cylinder pin retaining screw suffered damage in an attempt to remove it and was subsequently acid washed in an effort to help blend with the patina, the mainspring is an old-style mainspring (these were made without a hammer roller channel), the grips are correct and numbered in the backstrap channel, a small chip found missing at the right toe, the ejector rod head is an old nicely-executed homemade replacement, the barrel address is 100% correct and in nice condition, the cylinder pin remains partially extended and is frozen in place, and the muzzle has been somewhat flattened. Finish remains a natural dark-brown patina throughout. As stated in the John A. Kopec letter, his opinion is that this gun could have been issued to the Fourth Cavalry in Texas. CONDITION: Good, with virtually all of the original finishes turned to a homogenous chocolate brown patina throughout. Grips are good with inspector cartouches worn off, wood is slightly shy to backstrap and butt with chips at right and left sides of the toe. Action is tight. Bore is dark with visible rifling. Holster is very good, with stitching tight, leather pliable, and liner beginning to become loose from wear. Overall, an attractive Ainsworth inspected Colt Cavalry with Kopec letter and aftermarket holster. TON Accessories: Holster Barrel Length: 7 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 LC FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: Single Action Army Paperwork: Kopec Letter Serial Number: 3735

(A) RARE NO SERIAL NUMBER COLT ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER (1878).

Lot # 1276 (Sale Order: 173 of 323)

The Ordnance Department purchased 171 unnumbered replacement frames from Colt between 1874 and 1891. A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Graham, Kopec and Moore states that the Army purchased six replacement frames from Colt on May 4th, 1891. These were the last replacement frames purchased from Colt. The left side of the frame is roll stamped with the Colt three-date/two line patent marking initially used by Colt in 1890 at approximately serial number 134,000. The inside of the loading gate is stamped 1561 assembly number. The frame is stamped with the "US" property mark and the letters "LD" instead of a serial number. The barrel is roll stamped "45 COLT" on the left side which indicates was installed during the Colt overhaul of Single Action Army revolvers circa 1903. The underside of the barrel is stamped with the small "RAC" sub-inspection mark utilized during the 1903 Colt overhaul. The cylinder is also a replacement that dates from the same overhaul and is stamped "RAC" sub-inspection mark of the rear face. The bottom of the back strap has no serial number marking. The trigger guard is number 47723 and inspected "HN". The revolver retains at least 85% of the blue finish used in the Colt 1903 overhaul. CONDITION: More than 85% of the bright case colors remain on the frame and hammer. The balance of the revolver has just thinned through. The Colt and Ordnance sub-inspection markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The walnut grips are excellent overall condition with a couple of light chips. The action is tight and functions like new as is the bore. This unnumbered US Colt was one of the tail end production Artillery Models as they were using up the last of the parts supply. Given the rarity and the near mint overall condition on this nearly unique US Colt, it would be next to impossible to find another example let alone a finer example. This is a rare and documented variation of the Colt Artillery Single Action revolver.
