Lot # 1288 (Sale Order: 185 of 323)

Smith & Wesson 1st Model double action revolver with factory letter. Often referenced as the "Double Action Frontier", being made 1880-1913, with this example being shipped to "M.W.Robinson Co. New York, NY" in 1883. The factory letter also confirms the barrel length (6") and the finish (nickel). Barrel rib reads "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT'D JAN 17 & 24 65. JULY 11 65. AUG.24 69. JULY 25 71. DEC. 2 79 MAY 11 & 25 1880". Serials on the butt and cylinder are matching. Round barrel with full rib and half-moon front sight. Nickel finish looking to have been touched up in places. Hammer and trigger are case hardened. This gun is interesting, as it has two styles of engraving. The frame has fine factory scroll engraving, while the barrel assembly has a punch style engraving, similar to that found on early Merwin Hulbert guns. The consignor states this gun was a sales sample that was shown to potential retailers of the different types of engraving available on Smith and Wesson revolvers. Cylinder is correctly 1 - 7/16" long. Period correct pearl grips. Inside of the right panel is faintly numbered "7624". Attributed to the Tommy Rhodes collection. (C) SMITH & WESSON REVOLVER OWNED BY ANNIE OAKLEY AND CURTIS LISTON WILD WEST EXHIBITION SHOOTERS.

Lot # 1294 (Sale Order: 191 of 323)

Annie Oakley (Phoebe Ann Moses) August 13, 1860 - November 3, 1926 was by all accounts the most famous and gifted exhibition shooter in American history. Performing in William F. Cody's "Buffalo Bill" Wild West Show from 1885 to 1902, Annie Oakley was star of the show and an international sensation. Curtis Liston first saw Annie Oakley in 1898 when he was 18 years old. Annie was performing with the Wild West Show in Liston's hometown, Uniontown, Pennsylvania. Curtis Liston was mesmerized by Annie's performance and remarkable feats of marksmanship. Liston recalls the experience in a September 16, 1956 interview saying "I watched her shooting, and it set me on fire!" "I went away from there filled with desire to shoot like that, though I was only a youngster then". Liston went on to win the National Rifle Championship twelve years later, held in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1910. He was asked that same year to join Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show as an exhibition shooter. During the year of 1911 Annie Oakley came out of retirement to join a new Wild West Show named "Young Buffalo Wild West" along with co-performer Curtis Liston. Annie Oakley and Curtis became fast friends as in July of that year Annie gifted one of her exhibition guns, Smith & Wesson Military & Police revolver serial number 115154 to Liston. A few years later in 1918 Annie gave Liston his prize possession, a 20 gauge Parker Shotgun, serial number 181313 as a Christmas gift. Stated in Liston's January 18, 1961 obituary is the following: "Mr. Liston gained fame for his expert marksmanship, having won the world championship rifle and hand-gun competition in Pittsburgh in 1910. Considered the best male shot in the world in his time, he traveled for several years with Buffalo Bill Wild West Show. He was closely associated with the late Annie Oakley while with the performers and worked with her in trick shooting exhibitions. Among his trophies for shooting feats, Mr. Liston claimed as his most prized possession a 20-gauge shotgun given as a Christmas gift with an inlaid gold plate engraved "To Curtis Liston from Annie Oakley". It is interesting to note this very shotgun sold at auction on June 11, 2016 fetching the handsome sum of $195,500.00 Being offered in this lot is Smith & Wesson Military & Police double action revolver, serial number 115154 gifted to Curtis Liston by Annie Oakley. Blue with case hardened hammer and trigger. 6 - 1/2" barrel, chambered in .38 S&W Special cartridge. 2-piece checkered walnut grips. Adjustable rear target and patridge style front sights. Accompanying the revolver is the original notarized bill of sale of the revolver to C.R. Boone on July 22, 1955. Also included is an original signed letter from Curtis Liston documenting his trading the revolver to Boone for a "Deer rifle". C.R. Boone sold the revolver to the current owner's family on April 9, 1956. Revolver is well documented and comes housed in a contemporary French fitted cherry wood deluxe case. CONDITION: Very fine overall with 80-85% plus original bright blue remaining. Bore is bright and clean. Action is tight and crisp. Grips show moderate wear. (C) ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER OWNED BY OKLAHOMA DEPUTY SHERIFF "TWO GUN" JOHN MIDDLE

Lot # 1295 (Sale Order: 192 of 323)

1922 Vintage Colt Single Action Army revolver, serial number 343178. Nickel with 5 - 1/2" barrel, chambered in .45 LC caliber. Profusely hand-engraved in approximately 'C' grade coverage with a monogram "M" on top of the backstrap. 2-piece ivory grips with Colt nickel medallions. Shipped to Wolf & Klar in Fort Worth Texas on June 29, 1922. Accompanying Colt Archival Letter documents configuration and shipment. Letter has an interesting footnote that reads: "The records reveal the above arm had some special work as indicated by Colt Factory Order #6031/5. Specifics of this special work are not available". Former deputy sheriff of Three Sands Oklahoma named John "Two Gun" Middleton is believed to have been carrying this Colt SAA when he was shot down in an "Old West Style" gunfight on July 21, 1923. Headlines in the July 26, 1923 edition of the local newspaper, "The Tonka" reports: "Two Deputy Sheriffs Shot Down Saturday By Choctaw Indian". Middleton along with Deputy George "Hookey" Miller were shot dead by 41 year old Choctaw Indian named Jackson "Chief" Burns. Both Middleton and Miller were known to be rough characters using extreme measures on occasion. One newspaper account reported they were feared and hated by those they dealt with and used cruel tactics on those they were collecting their "protection" monies from. Miller received his moniker "Two Gun" because he was known to proudly carry his Colt SAA on his hip along with a second hideaway gun. Miller acquired his nickname "Hookey" due to his left hand being replaced with a hook. Bad blood had been brewing between the officers and Burns when they previously arrested him for public intoxication, chained him to a bedpost in a local boarding house room, and beat him until he agreed to pay them "protection money". After his release Middleton and Miller threatened to kill him if he returned to town. On the day of the shooting eye witnesses reported Middleton and Miller as saying "There the son-of-a-bitch is now" when they saw him sitting at a café table, then went on to say "Let's smoke him out!" Jackson Burns was tried for murder and found not guilty on September 28, 1923 by reason of self-defense. The revolver is accompanied by several letters of testimony describing the incident and authentication of the gun. CONDITION: Excellent with 95% bright nickel remaining. Action is tight and crisp. (C) HISTORIC SILVER CITY NEW MEXICO COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER & GUN RIG OWNED BY SHERIFF C.A.

Lot # 1298 (Sale Order: 195 of 323)

1906 Vintage, factory engraved Colt Single Action Army, serial number 275496. Accompanying the revolver is a Colt Archival Letter dated September 18, 1963, signed by R.H. Wagner, Colt Spare Parts Supervisor. Letter documents serial number 275496 as .45 caliber, 4 - 3/4" barrel, silver-plated, pearl grips, sold to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett Co. Chicago Illinois, and shipped to W.S. Cox. W.S. Cox was a leading hardware merchant, and affiliate with HSB & Co. located in Grant County, Silver City, New Mexico. Colt letter further documents the backstrap engraved "C.A. Farnsworth, Sheriff / Grant Co. 1905-1906". Revolver is deluxe engraved in the classic Helfricht-style featuring foliate scrollwork with punch dot backgrounds. Has 2-piece, carved Mother of Pearl grips with a Steer head motif on right panel. Pictured on page 94 and discussed on page 95 of John Parsons classic 1949 book titled "The Peace-Maker And Its Rivals". The story of this historic New Mexico shipped "Peacemaker" reads like an Old West novel. Originally given to Grant County (Silver City), New Mexico Sheriff Charles A. Farnsworth in 1906 as a gift for his service. Sheriff Farnsworth later loses his prized Colt in a poker game to neighboring Luna County Sheriff, Dwight Stephens. These counties, located in the area of Southwest New Mexico during the turn of the century were still dangerous and troublesome spots, home to outlaws and gunmen. The area's most prosperous industry was the Chino Copper Company located in Santa Rita, just 15 miles from Silver City. Payroll for this outfit reached $30,000 a month, and was common knowledge the mine's manager, John M. Sully personally transported the money on the 10th of each month. At 10:00 a.m. on August 10, 1911, three men armed with "newly-manufactured" automatic pistols held up Sully on his way to Santa Rita. However on this day, Sully did not have the payroll instead he transported it using Wells Fargo & Co. At "gunpoint", the bandits robbed Mr. Sully and his traveling companions and fled on foot into the Santa Rita Mountains. Constable Lon Portwood was alerted and raised a posse to pursue the bandits. The bandits were able to get "the drop" on Portwood's posse, stealing their weapons and horses. The following morning Grant County Sheriff, Herb McGrath mounted a 7-man posse and unsuccessfully tracked the bandits for a week. Sheriff McGrath posted a $1,000 reward for the trio, however the case remained quiet. Several months later on November 7, 1911 a man being held on burglary charges, alias John W. Gates was broken out of the Luna County jail by two armed companions. The two masked gunman surprised Sheriff Dwight Stephens along with his deputy Jim Kealy, disarming them and locking them in their own jail cells. The Colt revolver taken from Sheriff Stephens was serial number 275496 that he won from Farnsworth playing poker. Sheriff Stephens mounted a 5-man posse, tracking the outlaws for over a week. They were discovered in an abandoned adobe house, west of Winston, New Mexico. The outlaws saw the posse and opened fire. During the gun battle, two of the deputies were shot dead, and Sheriff Stephens shot and killed one of the outlaws, John Greer, with his Winchester rifle. Later it was learned that Greer was also wanted for murder in El Paso Texas, and for robbing a Southern Pacific train in 1910. In Greer's possession were the keys from the Luna County Jail and Deputy Kealy's revolver. Greer's body was later identified as one of the three bandits which robbed the Chino Copper Co. manager, John Sully. Now that one of the outlaws had been positively identified, it was fairly certain who the other two were. It was discovered the outlaw who gave his name as Gates when arrested in Luna Co. was actually Irvin Frazier and the third man was Reynold Greer, a brother to the outlaw that had been killed. All three men had been members of Francisco Madero's rebel forces during the Mexican Revolution. The next news came a year later on January 1912 from El Paso Texas when a man named Gray had been arrested for robbing a Santa Fe Railroad train. In Gray's pocket (later learned to be Irvin Frazier) was a pawn ticket which led officers to a beautifully engraved Colt .45 revolver, with the name "Charles A. Farnsworth" engraved on the backstrap! When Farnsworth was notified, authorities learned the Colt was the one Farnsworth had lost in the poker game to Sheriff Dwight B. Stephens, and the same gun stolen from Stephens during the Luna County jailbreak. Click here to see the full description.

(C) HELFRICHT ENGRAVED AND FACTORY GOLD INLAID 1907 COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY SHIPPED TO FAMOUS NEW ME

Lot # 1299 (Sale Order: 196 of 323)

Fred Lambert's life reads like a Louis LA'more or Larry McMurtry "Old West" novel. Born on January 23, 1887 and growing up in his father's famous saloon/hotel, The St. James, in Cimarron, New Mexico, provided young Lambert with more than enough adventure. His father told him that when he was born, there were 26 bullet holes in the ceiling of the saloon. Some of the most dangerous desperados of the day who frequent his father's saloon, were Black Jack Ketchum and famous lawmen such as Clay Allison and Mac Bowman. Another important figure in young Fred's life was William F. Cody. Cody regarded himself as the youngster's godfather. In an interview, Fred Lambert recalls Cody giving him shooting lessons and advice on how to best handle firearms. Cody would say "A gun is not a plaything; it can be your best friend or your worst enemy". Gunslinger Bob McGinnis, member of Ketchum's outlaw gang also played a role in teaching Fred to draw and shoot. These were the days he spent in the violent country of the Territory of New Mexico when lawlessness was running rampant. To the east the Texas Rangers were successful in their campaign against outlaws, and those that got away chose to move westward. On the western border, Arizona Rangers waged war against the lawless, forcing outlaws to the east. Caught in the middle was the Territory of New Mexico, becoming a refuge for outlaws and gunfighters. In Cimarron, gunfights were almost an everyday affair. In this era, a man would no doubt be called upon to use the gun, and the better he knew how to use it, the better his chances of survival. Fred Lambert learned well. At the tender age of 16, Fred Lambert became a special deputy sheriff in his home county of Colfax. He had barely pinned on the badge when he pursued and captured a dangerous trio wanted for murder. After serving as Special Deputy Sheriff, Lambert became the first town Marshal of Cimarron. He later served as Constable, U.S. Posseman, State Game Warden, Cattle Board Inspector, and the Territorial New Mexico Mounted Police, also known as the New Mexico Rangers. Fred Lambert's career in New Mexico law enforcement spanned a 50+ year period. Later in life he became an accomplished author, poet, and artist. Fred Lambert's prized Colt Single Action Army revolver, serial number 305332 being offered in this lot was special ordered by Lambert from Colt in 1907 and he carried it throughout his career. Accompanying the revolver is a documentation notebook filled with articles, testimonials, and photographs of Lambert with the gun. Among the many articles of documentation are three Colt Archival Letters dated October 24, 2003, July 17, 1978, and May 27, 1983. The October 24, 2003 letter signed by Kathleen J. Hoyt, Historian documents serial number 305332, .32-20 caliber. 5 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, Pearl with carved Ox head stocks, factory engraved and further embellished with two gold bands on the barrel, and Cimarron, New Mexico engraved on the strap. Shipped to Chas. F. Lambert, Cimarron, New Mexico on January 15, 1908 in a single gun shipment. It is interesting to note that Fred Lambert was an active member of the fraternal organization "The Coming Men Of America". Engraved on top of the backstrap is the fraternal order's monogram. It wasn't until a recent discovery of Colt production records, found on a turned-down page of the journal, is an image of the monogram documenting it was indeed engraved by Colt during time of manufacture. Also, proof of the gold barrel bands being inlaid at the factory were found in the production records. Copies of those ledger pages are also included. The revolver is deluxe engraved by Cuno Helfricht featuring his classic scrollwork with punch dot backgrounds. Special attention was given to fancy borders along the ejector rod housing, top strap, and around the front sight. Overall coverage of engraving is approximately a grade 'C' level. The backstrap is inscribed inside a fancy panel "Cimarron New Mexico". Top of backstrap is engraved with "The Coming Men Of America" monogram. Most attractive and unique factory carved mother of pearl grips featuring an Ox head motif. The eyes and nostrils of the Ox head are inlaid with emeralds. Full factory blue finish with gold inlaid barrel bands located at the breech and muzzle of the 5 - 1/2" barrel. It is generally accepted by Colt collectors that less than ten pre-World War II Colt SAAs received gold inlaid embellishments at the factory. Chambered in .32-20 WCF caliber. In one of the interviews, Lambert speaks to his choosing of the .32-20 chambering. Click here to see the full description.

(C) HIGH CONDITION TEXAS RANGER GRAHAM BARNETT COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER WITH BADGE, HOLSTER

Lot # 1300 (Sale Order: 197 of 323)

Joe Graham Barnett, better known by his nickname "Bush" and best described as a Texas Legend that struck fear into the hearts of many an outlaw, nonetheless, walked both sides of the law himself. Ranger, bootlegger, deputy Sheriff, rancher, bodyguard, and hired gun. As written in the book, titled: "Graham Barnett / A Dangerous Man" by James L. Coffey, Russell M. Drake, and John T. Barnett, "He was admired by the people who knew him, and many who did not. At the same time, he was feared because of his reputation as a killer and a man with an explosive temper made worse when he drank, and he drank when he chose to. He stood by his friends, even as that number dwindled, and he sought out his enemies wherever they were. He epitomized the description "no greater friend, no worse enemy." In the 1920s and 30s, Texas, and especially West Texas, was a landscape requiring tough lawmen who would bend the rules to stop criminals, outlaws, the Klu Klux Klan, and gangsters, as well as cattle rustlers. Men like Graham "Bush" Barnett were exactly what was needed. His skills with a gun seemed superhuman, he practiced and displayed his skills with both the Colt Single Action Army and a Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol. His legendary status as the most dangerous man in Texas with a gun only flourished. His career as a Ranger began on May 16th, 1916 when he enlisted in Hill County with Texas Ranger Company C under the command of Captain J. M. Fox. Though he was in and out of the Rangers during this time period, his enlistment lasted until January 30, 1930. On one occasion, during December 1929, he was called upon as a Ranger for a period of 6 months without pay, being endorsed by none other than legendary Texas Ranger Frank Hamer. It is not exactly known what he was hired to do, and would probably only enhance his legendary reputation if it were known. Graham Barnett's life was cut short 2 years later on December 6th, 1931 in Rankin, Texas by a former friend and Rankin Sherriff, Bud Fowler. The headline in the San Angelo Standard the following day read: "SHERIFF SLAYS GRAHAM BARNETT WITH MACHINE GUN"! It is unusual for a newspaper headline of the time to name the man killed and only identify the killer as "Sherriff", and also implying, it took a machine gun to do it, further immortalizing the reputation of "Bush" Barnett. According to eye witness accounts, including Tony Hess, who was a trusted friend and associate of Barnett's since 1927, "Barnett was trying to borrow money to go into the ranching business from Fowler", Hess told the jury, "He was going to blackmail Fowler for the money". Fowler had been getting "rakeoffs" from local whorehouses and bootleg operations. Barnett had a canceled check written to Fowler by a local madam. He was going to use the check as leverage with Fowler. Sherriff Fowler's testimony declined to say definitely what led up to the difficulty. The only information given was he refused to give Barnett a requested loan. The exact details of what led to Fowler killing Barnett were not exactly made clear, what is clear, however, is that Fowler shot Barnett to death. Fowler's principal defense was the Western Code, "It was him or me", and was acquitted. According to testimony given by a Rankin gas station owner, late that Saturday evening, "Bush [Barnett] drove up to my gas station and told me to 'fill'er up'. He was driving a 1929 Ford Model A Tudor, and said he was on his way to Rankin to collect some money from Bud Fowler". In Rankin, Barnett's car pointed west as Sheriff Fowler drove north up the street and stopped 20 paces from Barnett. Standing outside his car, Barnett was a bit behind Tony Hess, 1 of his 2 companions. Fowler pushed the muzzle of his 50-shot .45 caliber Thompson through the door of his car and fired 7 or 8 times. Barnett fell mortally wounded, dying almost instantly as he fell onto his back. He was hit 7 times, but a doctor said 4 bullets would have killed him. He was drilled with .45 machine gun holes, starting 1" left of his navel and ending up at the right nostril. While this was the end of Barnett's life, his legacy is preserved by the Colt Single Action Revolver presented in this sale. As documented in accompanying Colt Archival Letter dated June 11, 2012 signed by Beverly Jean Haynes, Historian. Letter documents serial number 335154, chambered in .45 Colt caliber, 5 - 1/2" barrel, blue finish, pearl grips with carved steer head motif, factory engraved, level 2 with initials "J.G.B." inscribed on backstrap.
