(A) RARE BROWNING BROTHERS MARKED WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 1182 (Sale Order: 79 of 323)

As stated in several publications on Winchester, T.G. Bennett obtained a crude wooden model of a lever action when bringing the design for the Highwall back to Winchester, this wooden model would later become the Model 1886. As part of the payment for the design Browning was to receive finished rifles. These rifles are marked with "Browning Brothers Ogden, UT." or sometimes just a "U" after Utah became a state in 1896. With this rifle is an original Buffalo Bill Historical Center letter dated May 29, 1979 confirming this information that guns were used as payment, and a second letter confirming the characteristics of this rifle also comes with this rare gun. It is unknown how many rifles were to be paid to Browning and what serial numbers were payment guns and what were merely Browning sold firearms. Browning also designed the "50 Express" and it was first chambered in 1887. The gun is a Winchester Model 1886 rifle built by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1892. Gun has full blued octagon barrel with blade front and 2-leaf express sight especially designed for this cartridge. Barrel is marked with Winchester 2-line Address and has stamped between rear sight and address "BROWNING BROS OGDEN U." with caliber marking of "50EX" on top barrel flat at rear. Gun has case hardened frame with full blued tubular magazine and factory single set trigger with tang marked "Model 1886". Blued bolt and loading gate. Madis states 1 in 31 rifles had a set trigger and Arthur Pirkle states that approximately around 5,000 of the total production of around 115,000 rifles were chambered in this caliber. Gun has walnut plain stock with crescent buttplate what appear to be factory-type sling swivels. Walnut plain forend with blued nosecap and factory-style sling swivel. A rare rifle with even more rare historical significance. CONDITION: 80% fading barrel blue with some surface pitting across top of barrel. 80% original fading case colors with some light surface corrosion. Bolt and loading gate retains 80% fading original blue. Wood has 80% original finish with a light coat of linseed oil and some light usage scratches and dings. Forearm has small hairline crack on left side of forearm. Perfect bore and mechanics. DLM Barrel Length: 26" Caliber/Bore: .50 Express FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1886 Paperwork: LOA Serial Number: 65830

(C) HIGH CONDITION WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 .50-100-450 DELUXE RIFLE

Lot # 1186 (Sale Order: 83 of 323)

1903 vintage Winchester Model 1886 deluxe rifle, serial number 127344. Special ordered 26" half octagon to round barrel with button length magazine tube. Standard front and rear barrel sights. Special ordered Model 21 frame mounted elevator sight. Chambered in scarce .50-100-450 caliber. High polished blue with case hardened lever and hammer. Deluxe, full-figured, checkered walnut pistol grip stock and forearm. Shotgun style butt with factory mounted "Silvers" red rubber recoil pad. According to the Cody Firearms Museum Records Office, serial number 127344 was originally shipped from the factory on January 23, 1903 with the inscription "Dr. J.G. Knowlton" engraved on the left side of the frame. Records further document return to the factory for "R&R" on November 6, 1904 on work order #26777 and again on June 30, 1905 on work order #1042. Unfortunately, detailed records of the work performed are not available. Considering the inscription no longer appears on left side of frame, it is our opinion one of the factory work orders were to remove the inscription and refinish the frame. To further support this belief, the right inside of the top tang is factory marked: "Refinished" indicating some level of factory refinishing. The inside bottom tang is marked: "XX" documenting "Deluxe" wood along with assembly number "17." Assembly number "17" is also found on inside of top tang channel of the stock. The frame-mounted Model 21 elevator sight is not mentioned in the original shipping record, however is 100% original Winchester factory work and was probably installed in accordance with one of the two work orders. CONDITION: Excellent+ with approximately 95% bright original high polish blue remaining on the barrel. Receiver retains 95% factory reapplied blue with most noticeable blue loss on the loading gate. Wood is excellent showing modest wear. Bore is bright and clean. Action is tight and crisp. Overall a most attractive and scarce special ordered deluxe rifle chambered in a very desirable caliber. (A) SCARCE BULLARD LAR .40-60 CALIBER LEVER ACTION RIFLE.

Lot # 1190 (Sale Order: 87 of 323)

Circa 1888. Considered to be rare in the collector market, Bullard were only produced from the mid 1880's to approximately 1890. The company fought for sales against the likes of Winchester, Marlin, and also the Whitney lever action rifles which were being built in this period. The heavy volume of competition really hampered their sales and with that, thus creating a very limited production run of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 pieces. This particular rifle is an excellent example of how good the Bullard rifles were. This special ordered extremely smooth operating rack and pinion large framed 28" octagon to round blued barrel is fit with a tangent rear sight marked "1873" with graduated lines marked "2" to "10" and a half nickel dovetail front sight. The top of the blued receiver reads "Cal 40" and the left side "BULLARD REPEATING ARMS COMPANY SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A. PAT. AUG.16 .1881.". The left side of the receiver has a small side plate that allows access to the mechanism inside and the loading gate for the tubular magazine is located on the underside of the receiver. Rifle features a full magazine and is equipped with a rifle-style ladder rear sight and a bladed front sight. Incredibly smooth operating lever, trigger and hammer are case hardened. The serial number (969) is on the rear of the frame just behind the hammer slot. The straight-grained, fiery, and feather-crotched smooth American walnut checkered serpentine pistol grip stock features a blued crescent steel buttplate. The matched checkered forend is capped by a matching blued steel tip. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrel with 95% original blue. Feeder tube with 95% original blue. Action and surrounding area with approximately 85% original blue with some light flaking on right. Lever action and trigger operate smoothly. Case colors strong with the slightest of fading. Stock and forend both very good with light handling marks. Beautiful and well-maintained rifle. CP Barrel Length: 28" Caliber/Bore: 40-60 Drop at Comb: 2 - 1/4" Drop at Heel: 3 - 1/4" FFL Status: Antique Length of Pull: 12 - 1/2" Manufacturer: Bullard Model: LAR Serial Number: 969

CORRECTION: "Cal 40" marking refers to the proprietary Bullard .40-70 cartridge, although the .40-60 Marlin and .40-65 WCF could be used interchangeably.

Brass frame assembly includes saddle ring which was wrapped in a leather strip long ago to protect the frame from scratching and bolt face has been converted for use with centerfire cartridges. Two-piece plain walnut stock and forearm complete with carbine buttplate with storage compartment (compartment is empty). CONDITION: Good, with barrel and magazine tube turned a mottled dove-grey patina with scattered handling and storage marks throughout. Frame has turned a pleasing dull mustard patina and does not show any evidence of polishing.
