(C) FRESH TO MARKET AND RECENTLY DISCOVERED TRULY INCREDIBLE NEAR MINT AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE A.H. FOX

Lot # 2237 (Sale Order: 237 of 325)

Perhaps the most exciting discovery in American Sporting shotgun collecting in the past 20 years, and offered for sale publicly for the first time since new is the very last A.H. Fox FE Grade 20 Bore presented here. In total, there are believed to have been just six FE Grade 20 bore guns made, three in Philadelphia, and three by Savage Arms after their takeover of the A.H. Fox Gun Company. Several of the other FE Grade 20 bore guns are known to collectors and this gun, previously rumored but not before offered publicly, has recently surfaced in Colorado where its current owner consigned it with our firm. The gun was made with #3 weight 28" Chromox barrels which have a low profile raised ventilated matted rib with twin ivory beads. Barrels with chain border at muzzles and hand engraved "CHROMOX FLUID STEEL" / SAVAGE ARMS CORP., UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A." on tops. Barrels also engraved with 2 - 3/4" wedge of engraving at breech ends with gold lightning bolts - the signature on a FE Grade Fox! Made with beavertail forend which is finely checkered in point and tear drop pattern and also carved in fleur-de-lis towards action. The case hardened Deeley release is fully engraved as is forend iron, which is also hand engraved with serial number and simple scroll on the inside. Action is full coverage engraved, signed by W.H. Gough twice, once in front of the nickel plated trigger "ENG. BY W.H.G." and once on the right side of the action on top of the game scene "Gough". Action with gold inlaid stars on hinge pin, gold inlaid setter on right, pointer on left, all surrounded by perfectly executed shaded floral scroll. Top lever and top tang are fully engraved and "SAFE" in gold in front of engraved safety button. One large quail and five chicks are found on the bottom ahead of the trigger plate in game scene. Trigger plate is fully engraved in floral scroll pattern. Trigger guard is fully engraved in floral scroll and gold inlaid "E.A. GRIM MD" on bow and serial number in gold on tang. Beautifully figured fiddleback European Walnut buttstock is of capped pistol grip configuration and terminates with its original skeleton buttplate which is case hardened and fully engraved. The butt is beautifully checkered in fleur-de-lis through the wrist with ribbands and checkered side panels with fleur-de-lis pattern. Housed in a beautiful Huey oak and leather case no. 194 made for this gun. Made with single selective trigger, auto ejectors and auto safety. According to the factory records, this gun was ordered new by Dr. E.A. Grim in the exact same configuration and nearly exact same condition as today. The gun was special ordered with the skeleton buttplate, large forend, ventilated rib, gold name on trigger guard single trigger, and two ivory beads. Of note, the gun was requested to be proofed with black powder loads for 2 - 3/4" chambers - a very late black powder proofing! According to our consignor, Dr. Grim died before taking possession of the gun. His widow then gave the gun to his physician partner who had it until the time of his passing in the 1970s. From there the gun was sold to a private collector in Colorado until being consigned to our firm earlier this year. CONDITION: Extremely fine and near mint. It would be hard to imagine a gun of this age and quality remaining in a finer state of preservation than this gun. It retains virtually all of its bold original barrel blue and case colors with almost no sign of any wear at all. The gun appears to have been test fired only with only the very faintest of shell ring on the right side of the standing breech. There are a couple of very minor handling marks and impressions in the stock but it is overall near mint. The case is very good with some rubs and scratches in the leather and outer straps are missing. Simply put, when it comes to Fox shotguns, truly there are none finer than this offering. This gun is suited for the most discriminating buyer of sporting arms and is a treasure in American Gun collecting and American Gun Art at its highest form. Checkering is crisp and ornate displaying fleur-de-lis drop points in a flowing wave pattern extending well down the stock and including checkered stock shields all done exceptionally well and executed with an incredibly high degree of craftsmanship. The splinter forearm rates excellent and is almost completely covered in the same fine checkering as the buttstock with a finely engraved tip. Thatcher / 510 Park Ave / New York City. Also found in the case is the original Parker Bros. "Peerless Steel" letter. An unheard of piece of Parker Paper! The gun is housed in a period oak and leather case with the original owner's initials "JMPT" embossed. This gun was ordered as a consecutive pair in identical configuration. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain nearly all of an expert quality restored blue which is starting to age and tone brown. The action retains about 65% of its original case color. Stocks are excellent and retain most of what appears to be their original finish with some finish added for preservation. There is a tiny chip at the back of the top tang. The buttplate has toned gray. Bores are bright and shiny. Mechanics are crisp. Case is good to very good for its age with leather straps having dried and cracked with one torn. With the original hang tags, and also pictured in "THE PARKER STORY" this is an important and beautiful AAHE Parker for any discerning collector. (C) SUPERB PARKER BHE 16 BORE TWO BARREL SET SHOTGUN WITH CASE.

Lot # 2240 (Sale Order: 240 of 325)

Ordered by famous Parker shooter and salesman Gus Peret and made in 1936 on a No.1 frame with 28" Acme steel barrels that have concave matted top rib and hand engraved rib legend with small steel front bead. Barrel flats with Parker proof marks, 1939 date code, and 1958 date code as well, which is possibly when the second set of barrels were added. Made with nickel plated double triggers, auto ejectors, and auto safety. The splinter forend is fully checkered with engraved Deeley release and engraved steel tip. The case colored action is beautifully engraved in Parker's finest of the period with quail on right, mallard on right surrounded by fine Parker scroll engraving. The trigger plate has one of the finest game scenes this cataloger has seen with two setters on point in a beautiful rolling hills game scene. Bottom of frame engraved "PARKER". Straight grip buttstock with checkered side panels and fleur-de-lis behind action and flowing wave pattern through the wrist with nickel oval near toe which is unengraved and termiantes with its original blued and engraved skeleton buttplate. Barrel set #2 is 26" Acme with Parker proof on flats and unstruck barrel weight of 3 lbs 3 oz. These barrels do not have the reinforced forend lug which is typically found on the higher grade later guns and there is not a Remington date code noted so it is impossible to be certain these barrels were added in 1958, but reasonable to assume that. Housed in a modern leather case with red felt interior with Parker Bros. trade label. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel set (A) retains 95% of its Remington 1958 factory blued finish. Barrel set (B) retains more than 97% of its Remington blue. The forend is excellent, checkering thinned and lightly chased, and retains most of its Remington finish. The action is excellent and retains more than 50% of its original case color, engraving is crisp. Trigger guard blue is excellent at around 70% and appears factory original. The buttstock retains most of its 1958 Remington finish with a few minor handling marks and is sound. Buttplate retains about 30% of its factory original blue. Bores are brilliant and shiny, mechanics are fine though right ejector will not hold cock and should remedy very easily. The case is good with rubs and corner separation. Canvas cover is good with rub marks. The quality of the engraving on this gun cannot be overstated and it is as fresh as a spring daisy having not been offered for sale in more than 2 decades. One of the top BHE 16 gauge guns all around we know of. PROVENANCE: From the Carl Balderson Jr. Estate Collection, acquired from famed Parker Collector Jim Parker in 2000. Accompanied by PGCA letter.
