(C) A GOOD AND RARE COLT 1911 .455 ELEY SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, FROM THE FIRST SHIPMENT TO ENGLAND IN

Lot # 2026 (Sale Order: 26 of 325)      

Blue finish. Half moon front sight, U notch rear, two line two block patent and address information with Rampant Colt at rear and British view proof just above pony, right side of slide with "COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBER 455". Barrel with British view and proof marks on chamber, very faint "W" on right side lug, "J" on left side, "5" in front. Checkered slide release, safety, spurred hammer, and magazine release. Smooth flat mainspring housing. Long curved milled trigger. "R" and "E" stamps on top of frame near disconnector hole, Colt VP and "R" proof on trigger guard, "J.J." just above. Truncated diamond checkered grips. Three magazines with lanyard loops and marked on baseplate "CAL.455 / ELEY". Appropriate "W" serial number prefix. Accompanied by a factory letter confirming shipment to London Armory Company, England, on July 19th, 1915. Additionally, according to an email from the Imperial War Museum and Clawson, this pistol falls into the first shipment of guns sent to England. CONDITION: Excellent to fine, retaining the vast majority of its blue finish with some losses at high edges and operational points, including underneath the trigger guard, with some other scattered marks. Action works appropriately when cycled by hand, bore is excellent, strong, with shiny grooves and frosted lands. Magazines are very good to excellent with scattered handling marks. An attractive and rare example of the .455 1911. Standard configuration. Very late production with the serial number being stamped on the flat behind the rear sight. Stepped barrel. Late dark finish. All matching numbers on the gun. Accompanied by an original stock that has been refinished and has had the MAUSER logo "freshened". Stock fits well on the gun, however the safety position when the gun is placed in the holster doesn't quite line up. CONDITION: Gun retains 90% thinning blue. All markings are clear. Grips are fine with some wear and minor handling marks. Bore is fine with sharp rifling. Fine mechanical function. Stock is good as refinished. Manufactured 1913. With a production of just over 15000 guns the US Navy Marked 1911 has always been one of the most desired examples of the 1911 Colt pistol. Serial number 39531 is marked "MODEL OF 1911 U.S. NAVY" on right side of slide with traditional two line Colt slide address on left side of slide. Frame is inspected WGP intertwined in a circle (Walter Pennfield). Short checkered wide hammer with long trigger and short grip safety. Pistol has been phosphate finished for later military use. Checkered brown plastic World War II grips with commercial blue magazine marked "COLT 45 AUTO" on base. Barrel is marked with small RA in circle on bottom of chamber. Toggle marked with script DWM and American Eagle crest on chamber. Extractor is unmarked. Gun is correctly all numbers matching but is totally without proofs. Fitted with smooth walnut/steel lined Ideal grip adapters for the Ideal retractable holster/stock. Stock fits properly and locks into place rigidly. CONDITION: Good with 80% commercial blue remaining on barrel and toggle assembly. Frame retains 60% blue with losses at edges and grip straps. Bore is fair as is worn with light frosting in lands but strong grooves. Action operates properly. Ideal stock/holster is very good with leather being supple but dark. Attaching bracket and mechanism operates properly. Grip adapters have bruises and impressions from age and storage but are very sound and usable. A nice American eagle with period Ideal holster/stock. Manufactured 1935, Serial number 98 with tangent rear sight and slotted for detachable shoulder stock. Drift adjustable barleycorn front sight with single action operation and magazine safety. Checkered walnut grips and round hammer. Rust blue finish with slide marked "FABRIQUE NATIONALE D'ARMES DE GUERRE HERSTAL BELGIQUE" with Belgian proofs on slide barrel and frame. This extremely low serial number example has the type 2 tangent sight and has the early non-painted interior on the grips. Matching numbers found on slide barrel and frame. CONDITION: Very good with over 85% factory rust blue finish remaining with typical losses at leading edges of frame high points of sights light finish thinning at front and rear grip straps. Bore is very fine with sharp rifling. Grips are very good with slight period wear with no material loss or chips but a small crack at top rear of right panel. Action operates properly. A barely visible import marking from Simpson Limited is evident at bottom of magazine well and not visible when magazine is inserted. This is the earliest example we have observed commercially available to collectors and is surely to be the centerpiece of any Browning collection. Manufactured 1908. Serial number 731 of the first 5000 contracted pistols for Bulgaria from DWM. 4" barrel chambered for 9mm. Blue finish with straw finish appointments and checkered walnut grips and lanyard loop at butt. Produced without stock lug. Script DWM on chamber with Bulgardian crest on toggle. Bulgarian "Lion" proof on right side of upper and unique Cyrillic spelling of "FIRE" located at lower safety position on frame. Nickel finished magazine with wood base and housed in proper Bulgarian contract hard shell leather holster. A later order for an addition 5000 guns was placed the following year (1909). CONDITION: Fair with most blue finish having turned a plum patina and evidence of period rust pitting in concealed areas and grip straps. The grips are worn but appear to be original. The numbers are matching with the exception of the replaced sideplate and magazine. The bore is worn and dark but has strong rifling. The holster is very good with firm yet supple leather and solid stitching. A very rare variation with unique markings and a rarely encountered lanyard loop. U.S.A." and with "P" proof on top forward of rear sight. Right side of frame is marked at rear with Ordnance Wheel inspection and marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY NO. 1508371 M 1911 A1 U.S.ARMY". Barrel is H.S. marked on right trunnion and "P" marked on left side. Grips are contemporary brown checkered plastic with reinforcement ribs and numbered 2557 and 2558 on interior. Magazine is a contemporary USGI magazine, blue finish with ASSY number 5508694 on base. Hammer is flat 1911A1 pattern and trigger is short stamped 1911A1 pattern. Manufactured 1945. Parkerized finished with plastic Keyes reinforced grips and "FJA" (Frank J Atwood) inspected on left side of frame. Serial numbered on right side of frame 2450407 with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and "M 1911A1 US ARMY". Slide is marked "REMINGTON RAND SYRACUSE. N.Y. U.S.A." in two lines on left side. Frame has ordnance wheel inspection at right rear of frame. Short stamped trigger with checkered narrow hammer. Checkered safety and slide stop. Barrel is HS marked on right side of trunnion and "P" marked on left side of trunnion. CONDITION: Very fine with 96% of the parkerized finish remaining. A typical takedown mark is visible at slide stop. Bore is excellent to near new. The action operates properly. Grips are excellent with no distress. Magazine is very fine with "R" marked on upper lip and slight fading on base. Barrel is blue finish with left trunnion marked S P and B1 on left side of lower chamber area. Grips are diamond pattern checkered walnut. Remington continued development of manufacture throughout their government contracts to expedite and reduce cost right up to the end of the war. Experimental guns such as this were meant for internal company use only, hence the lack of government acceptance stamps. Approximately 100-150 of the tool room examples were produced and were later used as retirement gifts for Remington employees after wartime production ceased. Marked "Remington Rand INC/Syracuse, N.Y. U.S.A" on the slide. S P marked barrel. Black plastic pistol grips. High polish blued finish. The left side of the frame is inspected RCD in a circle (R C Downie) with a "P" proof above magazine release. Right side of frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY No 1072347 M1911 A1 U.S. ARMY". Commercial Krieghoff blue finish with straw appointments and fitted with Krieghoff molded brown checkered grips. Toggle is commercial Krieghoff marked. Uniquely marked on left side of frame "HEINRICH KRIEGHOFF WAFFENFABRIK SUHL". This rare marking is only found on guns numbered under 1000 and is extremely scarce. Commercial Crown N proof on frame, upper, and barrel. Krieghoff Commercial "Star" proof on left side of upper and Krieghoff eagle 2 proof on bottom of barrel. Krieghoff extruded and milled stainless steel magazine with alloy base and properly P2 numbered. Unlike later production guns primary parts are numbered only with most all small parts being Krieghoff Eagle 2 proofed. CONDITION: Very fine with over 97% commercial finish blue remaining with a touch of muzzle wear and high point wear at sights and edges of stock lug. Straw finish with very good with 40% remaining. Uniquely marked on left side of frame "HEINRICH KRIEGHOFF WAFFENFABRIK SUHL". This rare marking is only found on guns numbered under 1000 and is extremely scarce. Commercial Crown N proof on frame, upper, and barrel. Krieghoff Commercial "Star" proof on left side of upper and Krieghoff eagle 2 proof on bottom of barrel. Krieghoff extruded and milled stainless steel magazine with alloy base and properly P2 numbered. Unlike later production guns primary parts are numbered only with most all small parts being Krieghoff Eagle 2 proofed. CONDITION: Very fine with over 97% commercial finish blue remaining with a touch of muzzle wear and high point wear at sights and edges of stock lug. Straw finish with very good with 40% remaining. Bore is very fine and action operates properly. This gun is noted in Kenyon's book "LUGERS AT RANDOM" as being the lowest number observed and is featured in Gibson's book of Krieghoff Lugers as well. Right side of slide marked " COLT SUPER .38 AUTOMATIC" with Rampant Colt. Left side of slide has two line Colt address. Left side of trigger guard has Colt "VP" proof at top. Checkered commercial short trigger with wide short commercial hammer. Slide is serial numbered to frame under firing pin retainer plate. Top of frame is sub-inspected "S" to right of disconnector. Barrel is earliest variation and without markings or proofs. This gun, serial number 1664, is a recent discovery and never offered for sale prior. Extra two tone magazine with ".38 AUTO. / COLT" on baseplate. CONDITION: Near new with 99% original deep fire blue finish with only loses at the sharp edge of slide and very corners of sights. Grips are as new with no distress. The bore appears to be as new and without use. The two-tone magazine is marked "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO" on bottom and has a slight drag line from being withdrawn and inserted but remains near new. This outstanding Colt Super automatic also has its original factory box with full label and serial number on bottom. The box is tattered and worn but is still salvageable. Originally intended as a light rifle substitute and primarily marketed for domestic consumption in Germany. A very limited production of the estimated 2500 were produced with a small number being exported abroad to the United States. Fitted with a 11 - 3/4" barrel with drift adjustable front sight and a four position rear sight graduated to 300 meters. Blue finish with straw finished appointments and fitted with checkered walnut forearm, grips and detachable shoulder stock. Traditional eight round magazines of sheet metal, nickel finished with wooden bases. Offered example is cased in a contemporary fitted luggage case, with partitions for two additional magazines, shoulder stock, gun, sling and a box of cartridges. Detailed disassembly revealed gun is all matching with addition of shoulder stock having matching numbers on mounting iron. CONDITION: Extremely fine as completely and masterfully restored to as new. Over 98% of the blue finish remains with a trace of finish loss at muzzle and high points of action from very light use. Bore is very good with some earlier frosting in the grooves but being shiny and having sharp rifling. Wood grips are very fine with a small internal crack in the right grip. The forearm is equally fine with a wood repair at schnabel prior to restoration. The shoulder stock is very fine with no distress. The case is very nice with crushed green wool lining, black leather exterior and nickel hardware for latches, hinges and handle cleats. Thumb safety marked "RUST" with an arrow pointing upwards, extractor marked "GELADEN" on both sides, and front toggle link marked "DWM" in script. Wood checkered grips that have the full serial number on them with a wide grip safety. This is an all matching numbers gun. Manufactured by DWM and delivered in September of 1928 to the Dutch East Indies Army. Brass plaque on left side of the frame is unit marked "K-VL 48" "GARISON COMPANY, RIAU". "KOL" proof on right side of receiver and correct crown "N" proofs on the left side of receiver, breech block, and underside of barrel. CONDITION: Gun is in superb original condition, retaining approximately 97% of the original rust blue finish and 95% of the straw color small parts. Bright and shiny bore with sharp lands and grooves. Grips have sharp checkering with no chips or cracks. It comes with a rare and mint M11 russet brown leather holster with the short belt loop. All stitching is tight and serviceable. Marked on the top flap "CW N 7 36 A L". Also included in the holster is an Indies Army brass cleaning rod with oiler. Manufactured 1916. Commercial blue finish with diamond pattern checkered walnut grips. One of only 15,000 without Cyrillic Russian designation on frame. Documented with Colt factory letter indicating 1 of 2000 gun shipment March 3rd 1916 to "His Britannic Majesty's Government" for Russian Government. These US produced guns were purchased through the British government with credit backed with gold in Russia. Most were then shipped to the Russian seaports at Archangel or Murmansk for distribution to Russian troops. These guns saw World War I service with Russian troops and one is identified as having been used in the assassination of the Russian Czar's family. Very few examples have ever made it to the United States and those that have are typically in poor condition. CONDITION: Very fine with over 85% of the bright commercial finish remaining with typical wear at grip straps and leading edges of slide from holster use. Bore is very fine as are grips.
