1907 Vintage Colt Single Action Army revolver, serial number 298413. 4 - 3/4" barrel marked with roll-die inscription on left side "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40". Correct 2-line barrel address "COLTS PT. F.A.MFG. Co. / HARTFORD.CT. U.S.A.". Chambered in .44-40 WCF cartridge. Blue with case hardened frame and hammer. Left side of frame marked with 2-line, 3 patent dates, and Rampant Colt motif in circle. 2-piece Mother of Pearl grips. Shipped to S.E. Aldrich c/o McIntosh Hardware Co. Albuquerque, New Mexico on August 19, 1907 in a shipment of 3 guns of the same type. Stephen E. Aldrich was born on April 25, 1845 in Cranston Rhode Island. During the Civil War, he enlisted in Battery E, 1st Rhode Island Artillery on March 15, 1865, and served during the latter part of the war. In 1870 he enlisted in the 3rd United States Cavalry and was sent to Arizona. Later was assigned to Company D, Sixth U.S. Cavalry, where he served in most the Indian campaigns from 1870-1880. Leaving the military, he was in the cattle business in Arizona until 1882 when he moved to Manuelito, New Mexico, and was engaged in the mercantile business for the next 30 years. Mr. Aldrich was a staunch supporter of the Republican party and is noted for serving his party with honor and trust. In 1903 and 1904 he was county commissioner of McKinley County, New Mexico. In 1907 he was a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. In 1909 and 1910 he was trustee of the town of Gallup, New Mexico, and from 1908-1911 was a member of the territorial republican central committee. In the November 5, 1892 edition of the Albuquerque New Mexico paper the "Evening Citizen" is an article reporting several thousand Navajo Indians in Manuelito were threatening an uprising and bodily harm to the local Indian Agent and anyone else tempting to get their children to attend the agency school or any other government school. This was a very tense event alerting the local militia. The article also reports S.E. Aldrich sent a telegram to merchant Mandell Bros. & Co. telling them to ship him on the next train a dozen Winchester Rifles and 4,000 rounds of ammunition, which was delivered to him the next day in Manuelito, speculative to arm the Militia. Interesting to note that a recent book was published in 2009 titled "High Desert Adventures of Stephen E. Aldrich" CONDITION: Excellent overall with 85-90% original blue remaining. Strong case color on frame and hammer beginning to fade. Nice unmolested original screws. Pearl grips fit very well showing little wear. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright. Overall a very interesting pre-war Colt SAA that deserved further research. -MKS- Accessories: Box Barrel Length: 4 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .44-40 WCF FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: Frontier Six Shooter Paperwork: Provenance Serial Number: 298413

(M) HOWARD DOVE MASTERPIECE, PANEL SCENE ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER

Lot # 1240 (Sale Order: 138 of 302)

Many collectors will agree, and history will show, Howard M. Dove as the eminent master engraver of the 20th century. The engraved Colt Single Action Army revolver, serial number 5547 AM, presented in this lot can only be described as a masterpiece. Reminiscent of the panel scene Colts engraved by 19th century master engravers. This revolver is at least, if not superior, in execution and quality of engraving to those 19th century masterpieces. Using a 125th Anniversary Colt Single Action Army Commemorative revolver made in 1961, Howard Dove masterfully hand-engraved to create this incredible work of art. 7 - 1/2" barrel. Chambered in .45 LC cartridge. Finished in bright nickel, accented with fire blued screws, and cylinder pin. Scrimshawed 2-piece Ivory grips with blind screw hole in left panel. The left grip panel is scrimshawed by Dove, with an image of the famous Lawman & Pony, Colt used as exclusive advertising commonly referred to as "Patches". This is an incredibly accurate and detailed scrimshawed rendition of Frank Schoonover's original art. Howard MacArthur Dove was born in Montgomery County Virginia on August 9, 1942 dying on November 1, 1994, at the early age of 52. Mr. Dove was an U.S. Army Veteran and served in Vietnam as a Special Forces, Green Beret. He was a world renowned Master Engraver having the distinction of working for both Colt and Winchester as a factory Master Engraver. However, many of his most masterful pieces, including s/n 5547 AM, were engraved in his personnel shop, "OLD DOMINION ENGRAVING CO." located in his hometown of Christiansburg, Virginia. Accompanying the revolver is a letter from Old Dominion Engraving Co. dated July 18, 1990, signed Howard M. Dove, Master Engraver for Colt and U.S. Repeating Arms Company. The letters outlines the features of serial number 5547 AM with the following description in Mr. Dove's words: "Cuno Helfricht style with D+ coverage and blue engraved screws. Left recoil shield has high relief scene of a Marshall drawing two Colt SA's. Left side plate has engraved scene from C.M. Russel's painting of "Smoke Of A .45". The right panel side plate has scene partially taken from Fredrick Remington's painting of cowboys chased by Indians ("Dash For The Timbers"). Loading gate has a Colt pistol and 5-point sheriff's badge with ball tips. The ejector rod housing hollow cut has "Wriggle" cut line full length. Rear of cylinder has double wedge cut border and running leaf border. Barrel has checkerboard panel on left and right side. Engraver's signature can be found in the base of the ejector rod housing and under the grips on left side of butt." CONDITION: Near Mint overall, showing little to no wear. Ivory grips have shrunk slightly, exposing edge of the backstrap. It is safe to say this revolver was factory test fired only, and remains in an unused condition. A masterful work of art. -MKS- Accessories: Box Barrel Length: 7 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Modern Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Serial Number: 5547AM

The coin finished, side clipped, scalloped boxlock action is engraved with lovely scrolls and game scenes of pheasants and quail flying through fields and wood by "GR" (Gunter Richter - Merkel Master Engraver) as signed. The action is built with disc strikers, cross bolt, blacked top lever with checkered thumb, serrated safe slide and blacked double triggers. Double triggers are protected by a blacked scroll engraved trigger guard with long bottom tang. The handsome brownish red European walnut stock with smoky grain is furnished with an English sharp checkered straight hand grip and finished with a brown "KICK-EEZ" pad. European walnut forends with matched checkering and Deeley-styled latch releases. Releases and exterior iron metal engraved with scrolls. Gun and barrels live in a Merkel green and brown leather case. Case with original Merkel buttplate and Merkel certificate. CONDITION: Very good.
