Extremely fine custom Griffin & Howe bolt action rifle built on a German Gewehr 88 action by Griffin & Howe, New York, New York circa 1920. 27" round rifled barrel in .257 Roberts caliber with banded front ramp sight and rear Lyman peep mounted on the bolt. Barrel has been drilled with holes plugged for Lyman Target Spot or some other type of target scope of the day. Barrel is marked "No. 321 GRIFFIN & HOWE INC NEW YORK" on top of barrel in front action. Blued Commercial German Gewehr 88 bolt action with 3-position safety, checkered butter knife bolt handle, double set triggers, engraved receiver, and Griffin & Howe side mount with 4X Hensoldt Wetzlar scope with fence post reticle. Beautiful classic Griffin & Howe figured American walnut stock with pistol grip, checkering, cheekpiece, and Winchester style checkered steel buttplate with contrasting ebony forearm tip. Stock has quick detachable sling swivel bases and silver monogram shield and steel grip cap. CONDITION: 95% fading blue with some light handling wear. Stock has most of the original hand-rubbed finish remaining with some light usage dings and marks. Good bore, clear optics, and good mechanics. A usual but classic Griffin & Howe Sporter from the day. (M) ENGRAVED AUSTRIAN BOLT ACTION SPORTING RIFLE IN .270 WINCHESTER, BUILT ON A MAUSER 98 ACTION.

Built off a large ring Mauser style action with no visible maker markings (added scope blocks may be obscuring maker marks), visible Austrian proofs including "1528-52", eagle, and NPF proof. Barrel shank proofed with same 1528-52 mark, NPF proof and caliber designation of 270 and 6835. Action is engraved in an acorn and oak leaf band pattern, with butter knife bolt handle engraved to match. Barreled shank is lightly engraved with bands where it matches up with action. Underside of steel magazine engraved with oak leaves and a stag in a forest scene. Rifle built with flag safe and double set triggers. Trigger guard engraved with further oak leaves and a silhouette of a chamois. Top of barrel marked "MAHRHOLDT-PETERLONGO-INNSBRUCK-TYROL" for the Austrian maker. Plain rear sight on island screwed to barrel, with 2 leaf V-notch rear sight, one folding and one standing. The ramped brass front sight is on a barrel band with stippling. Left handed honey colored European walnut stock with Schnabel tipped forearm and checkered panels is with a black capped pistol grip. The buttstock Bavarian cheekpiece with carved scene of acorns and oak leaves is finished by a horn checkered butt plate. Toe line with silver oval inset plaque engraved with "ET". Sling studs on toe and sweated onto underside of barrel. Rifle fit with quick detachable swing mounts and mounted with a Weaver K4 60-B scope. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel has been reblued and retains virtually all of that rebluing with some extremely minor marks. Action and magazine plate in-the-white with a few spots of oil staining that do not detract. Trigger guard reblued, probably at the same tame the barrel was renewed. Stock is good with crisp carving and a few minor marks around plaque. Stock also with wood separation under bolt release. Horn buttplate with some slight damage (possibly from insects). Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with strong rifling. Inoperable checkered slide safe. Circa 1962. The 24" round barrel is chambered for the .257 Roberts cartridge and is marked with "BROWNING ARMS COMPANY" on left and with caliber and “MADE IN BELGIUM” on right side. The serial number is located on bottom of the barrel. There are 2 triangles of scrolled acanthus engraving at sides of breech end. Coin satin finished Mauser action has gold-washed trigger. Action is engraved with well cut, shaded, acanthus scroll, as background to game scenes appropriate to caliber; an antelope is on left side of receiver ring and a deer is on right. Floorplate depicts a mountain lion on a limb of a tree and a portrait of a mountain goat is on trigger guard bow. The floorplate is signed “J Baerten” who undoubtedly engraved the remaining scenes which are unsigned. Nicely figured American walnut gloss finished rosewood capped pistol grip stock is fitted with Browning plastic buttplate. Both sides of the butt are figured with sunburst fans. Stock features Monte Carlo comb with swept cheekpiece, single recoil bolt and rosewood forend tip with white line spacer. Matching flared grip cap has inset gold diamond on bottom. Closely spaced checkering at grip and forend is flanked by relief carved scrolling acanthus with stipple shaded background. Sling studs are in forend and on toe line. Weight: 7 lbs. 4 oz. LOP: 13 - 3/4". CONDITION: Excellent, retaining essentially all its finishes on wood and metal, and only a few light handling marks. Bore is excellent. Mechanically crisp. A classic and honorable hunting rifle is designed by Paul Demas and built by the French master builder. This handsome coin-finished boxlock double rifle is built with 23 - 1/2" mono-bloc blued steel side by side barrels. The barrels are fit with ejectors, raised, lightly engraved spear point quarter rib with express rear sights, 1 standing and 2 folding, standing is gold lined and the folding are marked 50 and 100. Front sight is a raised island sight with a silver tipped spear point blade and a flip-over moon sight protector with white tip. Bottom rib with eye for sling. Rib is engraved "500 NE". Breech ends of barrels with light scroll. Bottom of right barrel reads "Imported by Verney-Carron USA, Inc. Clay Center, KS". Both barrels stamped "500 NE" and "AR" under crown near barrel flat. Barrel flat also stamped with "AR" under crown and "AA". The unique and strong Verney-Carron action with its triple hook and triple recoil face locking mechanism is engraved with the rifle's serial number "A1037" and stamped with "2" & "C". The coin-finished scalloped boxlock action is fit with reinforced bolsters, disk set strikers, gas escapes, rose bouquets, English scrolls, double triggers, engraved and checkered top lever and an engraved and checkered safety slide. Rifle is non-auto safe. The action bottom is engraved "Atelier-Verney-Carron AZUR SAFARI". Double triggers are protected by a lightly engraved trigger guard that extends to a long bottom strap that is also lightly scroll engraved. The reddish-brown well figured European walnut stock is fit with a medium-sized sharp checkered pistol grip with right-hand palm swell has a lightly engraved coin finished capbox, shadow line cheekpiece, stud for sling and a brown "Decelerator" rubber pad with black spacer. The beavertail forend has matched checkering with iron metal that is lightly engraved and built with a checkered Anson-styled push-button release. Inner forend iron is coin finished and jeweled with serial number "No A1037" engraved. Rifle travels in a black felt covered travel case by Unique Cases. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain mostly all of their original color and rifling is very good. Action is tight, ejectors are timed well and triggers are crisp. Stock and forend with light handling/storage marks. Case is also good. Nice, strong double rifle. Circa 1982. A beautiful little .22LR sporting double rifle with 24 - 1/4" blacked steel barrels. Chopper lump barrels are fit with ejectors, spearpoint quarter rib with standing leaf sight. Quarter rib is raised, crosshatch checkered and with floral engraved spearpoint, Rib is smooth and concave. Front spear point sight is raised, scroll engraved and with nitre blue blade. Quarter rib is fit with a low mounted Leupold M8-4X scope. Left barrel reads "M.THYS - LIEGE - BELGIUM". The silver-grey patina sidelock side by side is exquisitely engraved by "A. Lovenberg". Engraving on right lock is of scrolls with 2 hare in field and with 1 running hare in field near hinge pin. Left lockplate engraved with a squirrel on a branch, 1 squirrel jumping under the branch and with 1 Squirrel eating a nut. All with surrounding scroll. Fences are carved with Acanthus leaf. Top lever, bolt safe, slide safe, long top strap are all engraved with small scroll. Safe slide, bolted safe and top lever also have checkered thumb pieces. Bottom action is engraved with matching scrolls and coyote stalking quail in a vignette. Fire blued double triggers with front articulated are protected by a brushed coin finished trigger guard which is engraved with scroll and a standing otter on bow. Trigger guard extends to a long bottom strap which is engraved with scrolls and serial "No. 80" in ribbon. Sidelock action with disc set strikers and cocking indicators. Deluxe Turkish walnut with streaky straight grain is built with drop points, fine checkering on a slender pistol grip, engraved steel grip cap with trap door, shadow line cheekpiece and is finished by a checkered butt. Splinter forend with matched checkering and a matched scroll engraved latch release. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels retain mostly all of their black. Action, triggers, and ejectors are sound. Safes seem to be pinned. Stock and forend with the slightest of handling marks. Great and fun little rifle! Front sight is ramped engraved and with a brass tipped blade sight. Barrels also engraved with scrolls and gold line engraved panels near breech. Barrel with German proof and eye for sling loop, with top engraved "MARTIN HAGN ANCHORAGE ALASKA 1965" with "9.2 X 62" on barrel shank. Action is built on a Winchester Model 70 and with a serrated wing safety. Bolt handle is stippled and engraved. Rifle is fitted with claw mounts and a Carl Zeiss Diatal-D 6x42 black scope. Circa 1999. This coin-finished scalloped boxlock big game safari rifle is fit with 23 - 1/2" shiny blacked shoe lump barrels. Barrels are built with extractors, full-length machined wide rib with "Safari .416 Rigby No.23" and rib extension. Rib is fit with express rear sight with 1 standing leaf and 1 folding leaf and brass tipped front sight blade. Swivel loop for sling is attached to the bottom of the rib ahead of the forend. The right side of the barrel is roll stamped with 3 interlocking rings and "Krupp Stahl" while the left side is roll stamped "GSI Inc. Tville AL GEBR. MERKEL SUHL MADE IN GERMANY". Bottom of the right barrel marked "K5276" with German nitro proof marks. Barrel flats with serial number, caliber and nitro proof marks from the Suhl proof house. The coin finished body is nicely engraved with light coverage scrolls with the bottom also incorporating a man working at an anvil and top of the action is stippled. The boxlock action features a Greener cross bolt third fastener, side clips, disc set strikers, cocking indicator pins, a non-automatic safety with the letter "S" forward of serrated blued safety slide and blued double triggers protected by a lightly engraved blued trigger guard. The thumbpiece of the blued top lever is checkered on both sides. The reddish-brown European walnut stocked pistol hand grip with hard rubber grip cap, sharp 2-panel checkering, cheekpiece, swivel loop for sling and black rubber Decelerator recoil pad with spacer. Splinter forend with border engraved coin finished metal iron and Deeley style lever release. Interior of forend iron also coin finished with the number "16023". Rifle resides in a light brown leather trunk case with green interior and Merkel's brown leather trade label stitched to the interior of the case lid. A pair of nickel-plated .416 Rigby nickel-plated snap caps are stored inside the case. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain most of their original blue with a few light handling marks and rifling is also very good. Stock and forend with light handling marks. Action is tight and triggers are crisp. Case is good with handling and storage marks. A fine double rifle chambered for one of the all time classic safari cartridges. Barrel reads "BROWNING ARMS COMPANY ST LOUIS Mo & MONTREAL P.Q.", "MADE IN BELGIUM", 22 LONG RIFLE", "BROWNING PATENTS". Silvery-grey action with full coverage scrolls and game scenes. Game scenes are of hunting dog chasing flying pheasants through wood on left, hunting dog chasing flying mallards through wood on right, and with the hunting dog with a Mallard in its mouth on top. Engraver is "J. BAERTAN" as signed. Action built with a gold-colored single trigger, black checkered safe tab and bottom ejector. The honey-colored straight-grained checkered pistol-gripped European walnut stock is finished by a black steel scored buttplate. Stock with right side ammunition magazine port. Offered in this lot is his complete set of four American Field Sports dated 1857. Printed and hand colored in Paris, France. In the book "America on Stone" by Harry T. Peters, a wealthy 19th century coal merchant and sportsman. Mr. Peters was an ardent collector and considered an authority of early lithograph prints. His book showcases 1,686 lithographs from his personal collection. Mr. Peters's books give high praise to Marsden featuring his work on page 272, plates 51 and 57. CONDITION: Excellent overall showing bold color with no defects, soiling, or staining. Professionally conservation mounted and framed in solid cherry wood frames using acid-free matting and backing. Zlatoust is well known for being one of the foremost centers of Russian engraving and metalwork, with production as far back as 1815, when Zlatoust was manufacturing edged weapons, including decorated examples. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus straightback blade, decorated on right side with a roaring polar bear on a glacier and accented with floral scroll, while right side is more simply decorated with flowing florals. Sheath is decorated with a pair of enamel paintings, with left side depicting a polar bear in portraiture, while right side depicts a polar bear with a fresh sea lion kill. Both sides are further accented with florals and intricate knotwork on a mixed blackened and gilt ground. Pale wood (Karelian birch?) grip with single finger groove. Pommel is decorated with florals and mixed blackened and gilt ground en suite. Pommel with ball capstan. Zlatoust is well known for being one of the foremost centers of Russian engraving and metalwork, with production as far back as 1815, when Zlatoust was manufacturing edge...mored weapons, including decorated examples. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus blade, with drop point blade, decorated on right side with a bear walking through trees, surrounded by fine florals and intricate knotwork, while right side is more simply decorated with knotwork. Sheath and bolster are decorated en suite with more knotwork and florals and a blackened ground, with sheath depicting a ferocious bear preparing to maul a fleeing boar. Burl walnut grip with finger grooves. Pommel depicts a bear, decorated with knotwork, emerald eyes, and a lanyard loop "mouth". CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, with some very minor marks from sheathing/resheathing. Housed in a wooden presentation case fitted to knife and paper slipcase. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus clip point blade, decorated on right side with a leopard mid-battle with a python, with clever use of blackening and white enamel to accentuate the leopard. Right side of blade with a short spray of florals on ricasso. Sheath, bolster, backstrap, and pommel with extensive floral decoration on a mixed silver and gilt ground, with left side depicting a leopard striking an antelope. Burl walnut grip with finger groove. Pommel with ball capstan. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, with some very minor marks from sheathing/resheathing. Housed in a wooden presentation case fitted to knife and paper slipcase. Accompanied by Russian Compliance paperwork and a brief description of the knife in Cyrillic. A lovely piece of Russian art.
