At the start of the American Civil War, he was 30 years old. Blackford was married, had 4 children, and was opposed to secession, but nonetheless, in 1861 shortly after Virginia seceded, he enlisted in the 1st Regiment Virginia Cavalry and became aide-de-camp for its commander James Ewell Brown (J.E.B.) (A) PAIR OF COLT 1851 NAVY REVOLVERS BUILT FOR CLOSE FRIEND OF SAMUEL COLT, HUGH HARBISON WITH R.L.

Lot # 1140 (Sale Order: 41 of 302)

Hugh Harbison was born in Ireland on October 26th, 1833, and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1849. He began working for Colt in 1856, and in 1859, Harbison is listed in a Hartford city directory as a bookkeeper at Colt. Additionally, from 1859-1861, he is listed as Secretary and Treasurer of the Union Ferry Company (a firm in which Samuel Colt and E.K. Root were directors). Root is known as Samuel Colt's most valued associate and was Colt's successor as president of the Colt company from 1862-1865. The 1862-1889 Hartford city directories list Harbison as Treasurer of Colt and he continued as Secretary/Treasurer of the Union Ferry Company through 1878. From 1867-1891, Harbison was listed as Secretary of Colt. Harbison was not only all of these positions for the Colt company, as well as a key part of the company's success during the Civil War and Reconstruction Period, but was a close friend of Samuel Colt himself. After Samuel Colt's death, he was the manager of Mrs. Colt's real and personal estate but resigned that position when he retired from the Colt Company. Harbison died in 1903, and, during his time at Colt, he had 2 1851 Navy revolvers built for him, and they are offered for sale in this lot. According to the Wilson letter, these revolvers were originally made with a rare factory rosewood double case, which is no longer present. (A) 1856 vintage Colt 1851 Navy percussion revolver, serial number 50840. 7 - 1/2" octagonal barrel in .36 caliber with Colt New York barrel address, cone front sight, and hammer notch rear. CONDITION: Excellent plus, with a generous amount of the original bluing remaining on barrel assembly with scattered minor age-related handling marks throughout and wear forming on high edges. Cylinder scene is crisp and easily legible. Frame, rammer, and hammer retain large amounts of original color throughout. Trigger guard and backstrap retain nearly all of their nickel-plated finish. Grips are excellent, retaining most of their reapplied varnish, and are strong with no major signs of distress. Action needs attention as cylinder will not advance when hammer is pulled rearward. Bore is bright with sharp rifling and modest abrasion near muzzle from use with corrosive black powder. (B) 1856 vintage Colt 1851 Navy percussion revolver, serial number 50836. 7 - 1/2" octagonal barrel in .36 caliber with Colt New York barrel address, cone front sight, and hammer notch rear. Left grip is numbered several numbers off, but is likely a factory mix up, as they are fit well and show consistent condition. Good bore with strong rifling. Crisp mechanics. BAS Barrel Length: 3 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .31 Rocket Ball FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: New Haven Arms Model: No. 1 Pocket Pistol Serial Number: 1625

(A) INCREDIBLE SET CONSISTING OF A WILL & FICK GAMBLING SET AND AN ENGRAVED HOPKINS & ALLEN NO. 4 RE

Lot # 1150 (Sale Order: 48 of 302)

Born Alice Ivers in England, the woman who came to be known as "Poker Alice" moved to the United States with her family in 1863, when her father, a schoolmaster, moved the family to Virginia. When silver was found in Colorado and people began to flock to the state, Alice was amongst their number. In Colorado, she met and married a mining engineer named Frank Duffield, and the couple moved to Lake City. During the day, while Frank was in the mines, Alice would amuse herself by playing solitaire and simulating card games that she had seen her husband play when the couple went out. With a little cajoling of her husband (and, by some accounts, a stubborn streak that has flared when Frank doubted her ability to play), Alice took a small amount of money to play faro and, after a series of wins that same night, was playing a $25 limit (approximately $500 today), and consistently winning. From then on, Alice gambled regularly and locals learned to respect her as a formidable opponent. Unfortunately, her husband was abruptly killed in a mining mishap, leaving Alice alone. To provide for herself, she continued to gamble but also began to deal, primarily a faro dealer. Around this time is when she acquired the moniker "Poker Alice" from those whose money she took. Perhaps her greatest moment and most noticeable success was in Silver City, New Mexico, when Alice was playing faro, again at a $25 limit, and winning so consistently that the dealer eventually relented, proclaiming that "the bank is closed". In response, Alice began to deal the table to other clientele, taking their money as well; purportedly, she ended that night with approximately $6,000 in cash, which she used to go on a spending spree in New York. She continued to appear around the frontier towns including Cherokee Strike, where she met Jim Masterson, Heck Thomas, and Bill Tilghman, before she ended up in Creede, Colorado, dealing faro at the infamous "Ford's Exchange". It was here that Bob Ford gave Alice a Hopkins & Allen No. 4 Spur Trigger revolver as a gift for her honesty and straight dealing. This revolver is the first item in this lot offered here; in standard configuration with a partly clipped front sight and simple floral engraving throughout. Critically, the grips are engraved "Alice Duffeild" [sic] on left scale, right marked "From Bob Ford". It is housed in a small period leather holster marked "102 / C /32 / 3" on belt strap and decorated around the perimeter with simple geometrics and florals. After Bob Ford was shot by Ed O. Kelley, Alice left for Bachelor City and then Deadwood. In Deadwood she adopted her trademark cigar (which she called "Jackass Ropes") and met W. George Tubbs, another dealer and local player. While Alice and Tubbs were often at odds, after a situation involving Alice saving Tubbs from an intemperate miner who was lunging for Tubbs with a knife by shooting his would-be assailant, the two courted and eventually married. It was during this time that Tubbs presented Alice with the second item in this lot, her own traveling gambling set. The set has a small plaque inset on the inside of the lid reading "Alice Tubbs" and is well equipped to allow Alice to take money in a variety of games. Contents consists of a small mirror with a woman's portrait on the rear (unlikely to be Alice as she reputedly had blond hair, and the portrait is of a woman with dark hair), leather dice cup, an autogiro, a set of dominos, numerous decks of cards, chips, a faro box, a celluloid game marker, a Brigaid cardholder, a scoring pad decorated with the Ponte alle Grazie, a small leather case filled with dice, an Elgin stopwatch, and various tops. In 1906, Alice and Tubbs bought property west of Sturgis, South Dakota until 1910, when a blizzard dealt Tubbs a hand of pneumonia, killing him in days. She pawned her wedding ring to pay for a proper burial in the freezing earth, before winning enough money to buy it back. Still needing to support herself, she opened her own saloon in 1912, where people could gamble and visit prostitutes upstairs. During this time she was married a third time, again ended by his death after just a few short months. The last famous incident Alice was involved in concerned a group of soldiers from Fort Meade who were attempting to solicit Alice's saloon on Sunday, a day that she refused to work (despite her offerings, Alice was resolute throughout her life that the Sabbath was sacrosanct). (A) RARE AND DESIRABLE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY IN .44 RIMFIRE.

Lot # 1152 (Sale Order: 50 of 302)

Colt Single Action Army manufactured circa 1881, serial number 1809. 7 - 1/2" round barrel with block style single line Hartford, Connecticut barrel address with V-notch frame rear sight and blade front. Chambered for the rare and desirable .44 Rimfire cartridge, with an estimated production of only 1,892 ever manufactured. These revolvers were made in their own separate serial number range and were made in both .44 and .22 Rimfire. Frame is inspector marked with an upside-down "C" underneath rectangular firing pin channel; according to "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" by Graham, Kopec, and Moore, several revolvers in their survey of this serial number range and configuration with this upside-down factory inspector mark are known. Matching serial numbers observed on barrel underneath ejector rod housing, frame, trigger guard, cylinder, and butt. Barrel is marked "44" on bottom side near center pin. Trigger guard is marked on left side of front trigger bow "44 CAL". Early donut-style ejector rod head. Correct style hammer and firing pin slot. 1-piece plain ivory grips. Comes with a copy of page 191 of "COLT PISTOLS" by Wilson & Hable with the caption "Rimfire No. 1809 left the Colt plant on March 12, 1881, with one other identical pistol, and is recorded as .44 caliber, nickel finish, shipped to J. T. Moores Sons, New York City. Grips and barrel length were not listed. Finding a rimfire series Single Action in such an excellent state of preservation as No. 1809 is a matter of extreme difficulty." CONDITION: Excellent, as expertly restored with nearly all of the added nickel plating remaining. Nickel plating shows signs of age, with clouding and light handling marks throughout. As noted in "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver", the rimfire SAAs were usually heavily used and typically not cared for and that could explain refinishing during the period. Grips are shy at backstrap but are complete with minor age related cracking at butt. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright with crisp rifling.
