The stocks are proud to metal with nearly all the original factory varnish sans a few minor handling marks. The bore is sharp and the action crisp. These small bores generally saw heavy use but not this one. From the Mel Hrubetz collection. (A) CONFEDERATE CAPTURED AND REPAIRED SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1842 MUSKET, DATED 1855.

Lot # 1350 (Sale Order: 349 of 886)

From all outward appearances, this gun presents as a standard model 1842 musket made at Springfield. Dated 1855 at the rear of the lock. Standard V/P/Eaglehead proof on left side of the barrel. No date on barrel tang. Illegible cartouche on the left side of the stock. .69 caliber smoothbore. What sets this gun apart, is in front of the trigger guard there is a "Q" stamped in the wood. Recent research and publications have identified this mark as that of an inspector at one of the Confederate arsenals charged with cleaning and repairing captured & battlefield salvaged weapons. The absence of a barrel date on this gun, due to it having been arsenal refurbished, then becomes a moot point. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned in the past and exhibit a pleasing gun metal with some minor areas of slight discoloration and very minor pitting. Markings are all clear. Wood is fine with light handling marks and some minor dings. Bore is good with some areas of light pitting. Fine mechanical function. GR Barrel Length: 42" Caliber/Bore: .69 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Springfield Model: 1842 Serial Number: NSN
