Lot consists of (A) Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor rifle with a breech block marked "US Model 1878". Lock is undated and is marked with an Eagle above "US Springfield". Windage rear sight with "R" marking. Fixed front sight. Blued metal parts. Gun fitted for socket type bayonet. Full military walnut stock. Comes with leather period sling and cleaning rod. CONDITION: 70% original barrel blue with shootable bore. 60% lock colors from later arsenal refinish. Wood has service marks and has added coat of finish. Mechanically solid. (B) Springfield Model 1870 Trapdoor rifle with breechblock dated 1870 with "Eagle over crossed arrows over U.S.". Civil War style lock dated 1863 with Eagle and U.S. Springfield markings. Military sights and set up for socket bayonet. Full military walnut stock with cartouches on left side. Comes with period leather military style sling and cleaning rod. Original Springfield Model 1884 trapdoor carbine. Standard 22 inch barrel with Post front sight with blade and Buffington "C" marked rear sight. Proper thick wrist SWP inspected stock with trap including cleaning rod and broken shell extractor. Low arch breech marked 1873. CONDITION: Good as partially restored. The stock has been lightly sanded but is still full sized and cartouches are visible but have been enhanced and has a small crack forward of the sling bar. The barrel action has been lightly cleaned and artificially aged. The breech block is very fine with excellent case colors in the interior and patina exterior. This .50 caliber Trapdoor Allin Patent was made from 1869 to 1876 in a total quantity of 3,422. Has the shorter 29-5/8" barrel and is using the 1863 dated lock. There are no provisions for sling swivels. Smaller buttplate, 1868 military rear sight. The barrel, bands, plate and trigger guard are finished in the white. Block is stamped "1870 / US / (eagle head)". The serial number 685 is stamped on left side of barrel and frame. The "ESA" Erskin Allin cartouche is visible on left side of stock but not readable. CONDITION: All metal is a clean steel tone with dull grey frame, lock, hammer, and block. Stock is excellent with normal use evident. The bore has sharp lands and grooves. Fine action. A fine all original 1869 Cadet Trapdoor and seldom seen on today's market. Comes with an original period leather sling that features early single brass hook with two keepers. It is a standard US issue in all respects with 1889 rear sight, ramrod (not bayonet), blue finish, case color 1873 dated block, and full length walnut stock. No trapdoor. Lock has US eagle but is not dated. Razor sharp "SWP" Samuel Porter cartouche dated 1886, with cursive "P" on wrist. CONDITION: There is a hint of muzzle wear. Rich blue, even on barrel bands with the only real wear on buttplate to toe and heel, otherwise retains 80% original finish. Walnut stocks are near mint with a few handling marks. (A) HIGH CONDITION US CHAFFEE-REECE MODEL 1882 BOLT ACTION RIFLE.

The Springfield Armory produced a mere 753 examples making this a very scarce rifle to locate. It is also one of the earliest repeating bolt action rifles issued by the Armory. Cartridges were fed through a trapdoor in the buttplate. It was approved for US issue in 1882 and was invented by General J.N. Reece and R.S. Chaffee. It featured two bands, stacking and sling swivels, 1879 trapdoor style rear sight with slotless screws, and ramrod. Left side of barrel stamped with "VP" proofs. Top of frame on left rail stamped "US / SPRINGFIELD / 1884". Rear sight is unique as stamped "C-R" on left side. The stock has a perfect "SWP 1884" cartouche near the top left buttplate. There is a proof "P" stamped on bottom of stock. CONDITION: Barrel and frame retain 90% original blue just starting to drift. Stock is near new with nary a mark or blemish. The bore is like new. Also comes with a period leather sling with a single hook and two keepers. One of the nicest Chaffee-Reece rifles out there. (A) VERY RARE US WARD-BURTON MODEL 1871 SINGLE SHOT BOLT ACTION CARBINE.

A mere 316 Ward Burton saddle ring carbines were made in 1871; one will travel thousands of miles and search hundreds of gun shows and never see an example of this US Springfield issue carbine. The carbine features a 22" barrel, no sling swivels, saddle ring and bar, single barrel band, and no cleaning rod. It was also one of the earliest bolt action rifles used by the United States. The side of frame is stamped "US SPRINGFIELD 1871". The bolt is stamped with the Ward-Burton patent dates. It features iron mountings and was finished in the white. Walnut stock has no visible cartouche stamps. CONDITION: The factory oil quenched frame is now a dull gunmetal grey with sharp legends. The balance of white metal is a soft patina with overall age freckling appearance. Stocks are very good with numerous bumps and bruises, indicating this carbine was used on the Frontier and did not sit at a state militia storage center. The bore exhibits sharp lands and grooves. This is an 1866 dated Model 2nd Allin Conversion. The walnut stock is stamped with both the "ESA" and "SWP" inspector stamps in oval for Allin and Porter. There is a small number "4" on left side of barrel, small eagle head left side of rear frame, an "O" inspector stamp on wrist below guard and an "L" just below that. Metal is finished in the white with exception of case color lock and hammer and the blackened block and rear sight. CONDITION: As new unused condition inside and out. Nice colors on hammer and lock that is stamped 1864 with eagle and "US Springfield". Block is stamped 1866 with eagle head. Stock is near mint with raised grain and just a couple of handling marks. Metal is flawless and bright. Mirror bore. The best example one could hope to find. Comes with an original leather brass hook sling with two keepers, maker stamped "------ & North"; still soft with a bit of checking. Comes with an original leather brass hook sling with two keepers, maker stamped "------ & North"; still soft with a bit of checking. Splinter forend with wedge fastener is nicely checkered in point diamond pattern with steel tip. Case hardened action is nicely engraved in border pattern with a couple of sparse scroll bursts. Blued trigger guard. Ball grip buttstock is checkered in point pattern through the wrist and terminates with a blued full steel buttplate. Housed in an original full leather with green felt interior Parker Bros. trunk case with cleaning accessories and Parker & Winchester 12A brass shells. CONDITION: Barrels are excellent retaining more than 90% original pattern. Bores are bright and shiny. Action retains more than 70% original case colors, particularly bold on locks. Substantial damage to the trigger plate and it does not fit with damage to the metal around the plate on the frame. Stocks are very good with impressions and a small chip near toe. It is worthy of a restoration effort. The case is as nice as one could ever hope to find for a gun of this vintage. Leather does show some drying and felt with rubs. Accessories are all very good. Lovell of Boston, this interesting 16 gauge hammer gun features a ball grip stock that is nicely checkered around the action and in a wave pattern around the wrist. Fine Damascus barrels with well defined pattern. The full length matted top rib is marked "John P. Lovell Arms Co. Boston, Mass." The stocks appear to be of French walnut and have very nice grain pattern. The splinter forend is nicely checkered in wave pattern with Deeley release and ebony triangular tip. Action is engraved in typical "Eureka" Pattern with flying birds on each side near back of lockplates. Composition buttplate is fully checkered with stag at center. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels retain about 80% original Damascus pattern with some spotting and action retains about 40% original case color, mostly in protected areas. Custom made by the US Firearms Company that operated out of the old Blue Dome facility making some of the finest Colt clones ever built. (A) is serial number 20592, (B) is 20593. Colt factory letter states that this Colt was shipped on July 16th, 1900 to Simmons Hardware of St. Louis with a 4-3/4" barrel in .45 caliber with blue finish. It remains in that same configuration except it now wears a full nickel plated finish and is fitted with two piece stag grips. CONDITION: All factory legends are present but a bit feathered on barrel. It currently retains nearly all of its reapplied nickle finish and the grips are near mint. Indexes and locks up like a vault. Bore has sharp rifling but there is some powder abrasion. Should be a great shooter or cowboy action gun.
