(A) SHARPS NEW MODEL 1863 CARTRIDGE CONVERSION.

Lot # 1042 (Sale Order: 42 of 886)

The series of Sharps, the 1859 and 1863 Sharps carbines, were the most widely used saddle ring carbines by the Union during the Civil War. After the war, they were converted by the factory to take metallic cased cartridges, and were then reissued to the United States Cavalry out West to be supplied for the Indian Wars. This early serial number carbine most likely saw use in the Civil War and then again out West. They were used in just about every battle fought in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. Features a full round barrel, single barrel band, German nickel front sight, Lawrence stamped folding ladder rear sight, walnut stocks, saddle ring and bar. Barrel is stamped "NEW MODEL 1863". Typical Sharps stampings on both sides of frame. Left side of stock has Indian Wars inspector stamp, "DFC", for David Clark. CONDITION: It is obvious this carbine saw little use after conversion. Retains 95% arsenal blue on barrel. Blue-grey patina on band. 20% case colors on frame with balance simply darkening. Hammer has darkened. Wood is excellent, cartouche is sharp. Fine action. Near mint three groove barrel. Barrel Length: 22" Caliber/Bore: .50-70 FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Sharps Model: Metallic Serial Number: C120
