(A) VERY RARE 2ND TYPE US MODEL 1870 SPRINGFIELD-SHARPS RIFLE - 1 OF 300.

Lot # 1056 (Sale Order: 56 of 886)

In 1870, the Springfield Armory altered approximately 1,300 Civil War Sharps rifles and carbines. They were chambered for the .50 caliber centerfire self contained cartridge and featured the typical walnut buttstock and nearly full length forend. The Sharps frame was case colored while balance of metal was finished in the white. The rear sight was the 1868 type. There are two bands, a cleaning rod, and sling swivels. No patchbox. Serial numbered 107 on left side of barrel and on tang. There is a near mint "ESA" cartouche stamped on left side of stock. CONDITION: This rare rifle is in excellent, all original factory condition. The stock is fine, proud to metal, with just minor handling marks. The barrel has a clean white age freckled appearance. Frame colors have darkened. Bore is very good but has some powder rings and light abrasion. A very tough Springfield dating to a single year and early Indian Wars Springfield Sharps rifle. Also comes with a period correct leather sling with brass hook and two keepers.
