(A) A VERY SCARCE AND DESIRABLE OWEN AND EDWARD EVANS, EVANSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA 1808 CONTRACT PISTOL.

Lot # 2005 (Sale Order: 5 of 900)

Though Flayderman warns that one must extremely cautious in acquiring one of these rare pistols, as many have been made from 1809 French examples, this appears to be an original specimen. The lock is properly marked EVANS just forward of the double neck hammer. Most importantly, the barrel has a clear P proof on left. CONDITION: The round barrel with even age has medium pitting throughout. The lock has medium pitting but clear EVANS marking. Hammer and frizzen appear to be the original. Top jaw and screw are an old replacement. Brass furniture with good color and only minor marks. Hammer retains an old lead wrap flint, possibly period. The side plate screws are heavily pitted. Walnut three-quarter stock shows considerable wear to left side, old repaired crack towards butt. No visible inspector's cartouche on wood. Ramrod is a very old replacement. This ultra-rare flintlock appears to be original flint. Action is good. Bore is surprisingly good considering external condition of metalwork. One of the rarer and more desirable secondary US martial flintlock pistols.
