Lot # 3276 (Sale Order: 276 of 711)      

Lot consists of: One long flintlock holster pistol, the other a diminutive pocket pistol. (A) Long flintlock holster pistol with 13" chiseled barrel with brass maker poincon Santos, the second with a lion rampant. Breech chiseled for half its length with foliage. Steel foresight. Lock with chiseled swan neck cock en suite with lock and frizzen. Two ramrod pipes; one steel, the rear ramrod pipe of brass. Plain steel sideplate, elaborated chiseled trigger guard en suite with lock. Spurred buttcap with skull crusher finial chiseled en suite with lock and trigger guard. Molded walnut fullstock with sophisticated fluting at forend. CONDITION: Metal polish bright and some pitting at touch hole. Small parts appear to be original to the pistol. Rear ramrod pipe replaced. Action is crisp. Stock is good, with a later coat of varnish. Bore is good. (B) The second with short 4-3/4" Spanish form barrel, plain lock, signed "P. Lorandi". Plain steel mounts, skullcrusher finial. CONDITION: Good polish, steel mounts, figured stock with damage to forend. Silver wire at wrist. Original thumb piece replaced with a Mother of Pearl plaque. British proofed on the octagonal barrel. Marked on the top of the barrel "PHILADA". The lock is marked "TRYON/MERRICK & CO". Brass mounted. Has "F. GOETZ" stamped into the left side of the wood at rear, placed there by the person who Tryon joined with when he began his working life. CONDITION: All metal surfaces have been cleaned. Light pitting on iron parts. Markings are clear. Brass is cleaned. Wood stock has been sanded at some point, some chips along the barrel channel. There are two cracks in the left side, opposite the lock. Some chips out around the lock plate. There is a crack extending from the front of the trigger guard to the rear of the ramrod ferrule. There is a replaced piece of wood at the front top of the lockplate. Bore is lightly pitted. Good mechanical function. From the Robert Sadler Collection. Of standard configuration throughout. These Aston pistols are normally found with dates after the Mexican War and to find one with a Mexican War date is unusual. Barrel with usual US, JHP markings. Dated 1847 at tang. Lock with standard marking, dated 1847 at tail. Stock with William A. Thornton cartouche and NWP for Nathan W. Patch. CONDITION: Barrel has minor pitting throughout. Lock is crisp. Cock screw with minor pitting. Cock has a piece broken out at nose. Stock is very good. WAT cartouche particularly legible. Brass mounts in good condition. Action is crisp as new. (A) US INSPECTED NAVY MODEL MASSACHUSETTS ARMS COMPANY ADAMS PATENT DOUBLE ACTION PERCUSSION REVOLVE

Lot # 3283 (Sale Order: 283 of 711)      

Made by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls between 1857-61. It is a five shot, .36 percussion double action based on famous Kerrs and Adams patents, and so stamped. Approximately 600 of these were procured by the US government and referred to as the Navy model with 6" octagon barrel. Both of the checkered walnut grip panels have US inspector stamps. The left grip appears to be that of Lucius Allin and right grip possibly Wm Thornton. There is a single military inspector single letter stamp on metal "T". CONDITION: This is one of the better examples of this scarce US revolver you will find. It retains at least 50% of the original factory blue with the balance blending to a soft patina. All legends are razor sharp. The walnut grips are excellent with sharp checkering. The action indexes correctly and the bore exhibits strong rifling. A really fine US revolver. Lot consists of (A) First Model Dragoon, standard features such as oval cylinder stops with Ranger scene, brass squareback trigger guard and backstrap with varnished one-piece walnut grips. The left side of frame has the US stamp. The barrel measures 7 1/2" and caliber is .44. G&K inspector stamps present. All serial numbers match. Rifling is fine and action works correctly. CONDITION: The revolver has no original finish and is now an aged gray soft patina with traces of plating on back-strap. Grips are aged as well. There is a light crack on inner grip strap. (B) Second Model Dragoon is almost a match to the above gun, matching numbers, no finish, US stamped with inspector stamps. CONDITION: The presence of some pitting can be found on frame. The rifling is gone, polished out, with some pitting. Cased Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum Commemorative Ben McCulloch First Model Dragoon percussion revolver. .44 cal., 7 - 1/2” barrel, blue, silver and case hardened finish, wood grips with inlaid plaque. Barrel is blued and ornamented in gold with Ben McCulloch’s bust, signature, and a Texas Ranger six-pointed star badge on both sides; the cylinder and straps are silver plated and the frame and loading lever are case hardened. The plaque on the grips states “Free as the breeze, swift as a mustang, tough as a cactus”. The interior of the case is in the French style and is accompanied by a powder flask, bullet mold, combination nipple wrench and a key for the case. Italian made copy of the famous Colt Dragoon and offered by the US Historical Society of Richmond, VA. CONDITION: As new and unused but with slight tarnish on silver and plaque from storage. Barrel is blued and ornamented in gold with Ben McCulloch’s bust, signature, and a Texas Ranger six-pointed star badge on both sides; the cylinder and straps are silver plated and the frame and loading lever are case hardened. The plaque on the grips states “Free as the breeze, swift as a mustang, tough as a cactus”. The interior of the case is in the French style and is accompanied by a powder flask, bullet mold, combination nipple wrench and a key for the case. Italian made copy of the famous Colt Dragoon and offered by the US Historical Society of Richmond, VA. CONDITION: As new and unused but with slight tarnish on silver and plaque from storage. Probably circa 1790, this musket features a round barrel with small sights added during the period of use and a bayonet lug mounted on the bottom, which has been filed down. The breech is stamped with British proofs and "RW" for Richard Wilson. The replaced lock is stamped "GALTON" at the tail and shows a worn crown over "GR" in the center, detached pan. Lock probably dates about 1820 and has a reinforced cock altered to a swan-neck cock. Brass American-made mounts composed of sheet brass. Buttplate pin-fastened and sideplate engraved with crude designs. The center ramrod ferrule is iron while the others are sheet brass. Early style curled trigger. Stock of figured maple and of early 19th century form. Steel ramrod is probably a period replacement. CONDITION: Good, barrel retains a dark patina with some scattered pitting. Lock is a second lock, but in original flintlock configuration. Brass mounts retain a partially polished surface with some dark spotting and scattered marks from use. This pre-Revolutionary War period musket features a tapered round smoothbore barrel. The banana lock is flat, with beveled edges and moulding at the tail. The center is stamped with a crown over a shield in a small cartouche. There is an unusual frizzen spring reinforcement bar between the frizzen and the spring. The hardware is iron and of Germanic or Continental style. The musket features a curled trigger and a full length partially figured walnut stock with a carved concave cheek rest on the left side of the butt. Complete with iron ramrod - which is probably a later replacement - and triangular socket bayonet stamped with an "R" at the top of the blade. This pre-Revolutionary War period musket features a tapered round smoothbore barrel. The banana lock is flat, with beveled edges and moulding at the tail. The center is s...moretamped with a crown over a shield in a small cartouche. There is an unusual frizzen spring reinforcement bar between the frizzen and the spring. The hardware is iron and of Germanic or Continental style. The musket features a curled trigger and a full length partially figured walnut stock with a carved concave cheek rest on the left side of the butt. Complete with iron ramrod - which is probably a later replacement - and triangular socket bayonet stamped with an "R" at the top of the blade.
