(A) Extremely Rare U.S. Springfield Model 1867 "Cadet" Trapdoor Rifle.

Lot # 434 (Sale Order: 429 of 545)

According to Flayderman, a total of 424 Model 1867 Cadet rifles were manufactured from 1867 to 1868 at the Springfield Armory. The majority were shipped to the Westpoint Military Academy. It is one of, if not the rarest of all production U.S. Springfield trapdoors or conversions. It has numerous features that are unique to this rifle: the breech block featured a blackened finish, the undersides have deep arched cut-outs, and has a small firing pin with collar. Block is dated 1866 with eagle head. Left side of the breech plug has the same eagle head. The case colored hammer features the knurled shield pattern. Has a thin lockplate, case colored and stamped "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" with eagle, dated 1867 with serifs on numerals that run at an upward angle, and the '67' are smaller than the '18', as with the Smithsonian example and the example in the collection of Springfield research. Aside from the case colored lock and hammer, and the blackened breech block, the barrel and all other parts were finished in the white. Sports a single folding leaf rear sight typical of Allen conversions. Has the one piece soldered on front sight. Features a unique ramrod with slot and five ridges and unique barrel bands stamped "U". The walnut stock itself is a scaled-down version with smaller buttplate. There is no "P" on wrist. The left side of the barrel is stamped "L4". Left side of stock has two cartouche stamps: "ESA" at rear in oval for Erskin S. Allin and the forward "FWS" cartouche in rectangle for Fred W. Sanderson. This rifle did not come equipped with any sling swivels. The barrel length is 29-3/4" which is documented in the Smithsonian collection example and the book "Trapdoor Springfield" by Bud Waite and B.D. Ernst. The barrel length is erroneously listed as 32-1/2" to 33" in the books "Springfield Armory 1795 to 1968" by Ball and "Flayderman's Guide". The three known documented examples all sport 29-3/4" barrels with 48" overall length. This rifle remains in almost unfired condition. There is some age freckling at left side of breech. Hammer and lock retain traces of case colors but have basically turned a soft grey. Toe of buttplate shows evidence of some light cleaning. Walnut stock is in excellent to near mint condition with strong cartouche, proud to metal and a few dents on left flat. Action and bore are like new. It would be nearly impossible to locate a finer condition example of one of the rarest of all U.S. Springfield Trapdoor type rifles. This example is worthy of the finest Springfield collection.Barrel Length: 29 - 3/4"Caliber/Bore: .50-70FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: U.S. SpringfieldModel: 1866Paperwork: No Serial Number: NSN

(C) Prime Winchester 3rd Model 1873 Musket with Socket Bayonet (1903).

Lot # 435 (Sale Order: 430 of 545)

Third Model Musket with 30" round barrel, full magazine, square base front sight/bayonet lug and 900 yard musket ladder rear sight. Receiver is third type with integral dust cover rail and third type dust cover. Mounted with uncheckered, nicely figured, straight grain American walnut with full length forearm, three bands and straight stock that has carbine/musket buttplate with trap. Accompanied by an original triangular socket bayonet without scabbard. The Third Model was the highest production of the Model 1873. Total production for the 1873 was about 720,610 rifles, carbines and muskets in four different calibers. According to The Winchester Book, Madis, only about 5% of that total (about 36,000) were muskets. Winchester was unable to generate any U.S. Military contracts for the ’73 musket so most of the production was sold to fill foreign military orders. Sometime in the second half of the 20th century a large cache of these muskets was discovered in Nicaragua and returned to the U.S. still in their original crates. Given the limited production, muskets should be considered quite rare as most of the foreign orders have never returned to the U.S. Extremely fine condition. Overall retains about 98% crisp, original factory blue with a small scrape on the right sideplate and three or four fine scratches on left sideplate. Lever and hammer retain brilliant case colors, lightly faded on lever finger loop. Buttplate also retains brilliant case colors, a little thin on the heel. Wood has three or four bruises and abrasions on the buttstock at toe, otherwise is completely sound and retains about all of its original factory oil finish. Mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bore. Appears to be new and unfired. Bayonet is fine with some light period abrasions. (A) Northwest Mounted Police Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine (1883).

Lot # 441 (Sale Order: 435 of 545)

Features full round barrel, metal forend tip, single barrel band, military style folding rear sight, blued finish, nearly full length walnut forend, walnut buttstock, carbine buttplate, and saddle ring and stud. The stocks on these carbines issued to the Northwest Mounted Police are stamped on the right side in a ribbon as seen on page 249 in the "Winchester" book by Madis. The special 1876 Northwest Mounted Police rear sight can also be seen on page 249. The order to obtain Winchester rifles in 1873 authorized the establishment of a semi-military body with the immediate objective to stop the liquor traffic amongst the Indians that had migrated to Canada after the Custer Massacre. The Sioux camp that drifted north consisted of Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, among others. There were a total of 5,600 men, women and children of the Sioux staying in Canada as that time as they were allowed to remain. In 1883, the year this carbine as manufactured, 100 carbines were received with the 32000 to 33000 serial range. The largest order was shipped in 1885 of 446 carbines, listed from 43900 and up. So, this carbine was either shipped individually in 1884, or more likely part of the 1885 shipment. These also were used in the Riel Rebellion of 1885. These carbines have a very storied history, especially when containing the very Sioux that had wiped out the Custer command. As to condition; the barrel is a pleasing mix of blue and soft patina with razor sharp legends. Right sideplate retains traces of original blue. Frame is basically a blue-brown patina as well. Stocks are excellent untouched, proud to metal with rich finish. Northwest Mounted Police stamp is still visible. Fine action. Strong, clean bore.Barrel Length: 22"Caliber/Bore: .45-75 WCFFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: Winchester Model: 1876Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 39897
