(A) Extraordinary, Rare & Important Ulrich Relief Engraved Deluxe Winchester Model 1866 Lever Action

Lot # 104 (Sale Order: 103 of 545)

Exceptional Model 66 with engraving so special and rare as to be completely unique in its presentation. Rifle has a 24-1/4" octagon barrel, full magazine, half nickel front sight and the scarce 900 yard musket style ladder rear sight with tension spring mortise in top flat. Top flat has the Winchester and King’s improvement markings. Mounted with extraordinary, triple X burl and flame grain, center crotch cut, uncheckered American walnut with straight stock and crescent buttplate with trap. The bottom of the stock and forend cap have sling eyes of a type not previously encountered by this cataloger but are, without question, factory original to this rifle. The trigger is also unusual with its long, thin, rounded tip generally found only on engraved and special rifles. Deluxe wood is rarely ever encountered on the early brass frame rifles and this matching forearm and stock are even an exception to that rule with their extraordinary matching flame and shell grain. Receiver, forend cap and buttplate tang are engraved by John Ulrich, possibly by his brother, Conrad, but attributed to John because of the border patterns. Their work was created simultaneously and in some instances is nearly indistinguishable one from the other unless they are signed. Unfortunately this work of art is not signed or at least a signature has not been located as of this writing. Engraving consists of the extraordinarily rare four vignettes on each side of receiver, two of which on each side are in deep relief which, again, is also extraordinarily rare. Vignettes consist of a standing bull elk in a forested and field scene on left side plate with a bugling bull elk in front side panel. The two smaller vignettes are of cow elk, all executed in exceptional detail. Right side also has four vignettes, two of which are also in deep relief. Right sideplate has an extraordinarily detailed standing buck deer in a forest scene with a standing bull elk in a mountain scene in right front side panel. Two smaller vignettes are of cow elk, one standing & one reclining. Remainder of entire receiver, top tang, forend cap and buttplate tang have full coverage deep chiseled foliate arabesque patterns with extremely fine punch dot background and very detailed shading. Bottom of carrier is engraved to match with mirror image spear point border at rear edge of carrier and opening, with feather borders on each side of opening. The large vignettes and front edges of receiver have the stylized zigzag border which is also around the entire top and rear edge of receiver. There are several areas of unusual checkered engraving as background work for some of the scrolls. There are two very unusual lion’s paws & forelegs, one on either side of the hammer slot at rear edge of receiver. All three of these engraved items; receiver, forend cap and buttplate, are gold plated. Flat areas were better able to be polished and therefore have retained their gold much better than the unpolished engraved areas. The serial number was observed in its normal position on bottom tang back of the lever lock, inside top tang channel of the buttstock and inside toe of the buttplate. Left side of the lower tang under the wood is stamped “XXX”. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet which identifies this rifle with octagon barrel, “XXX” stock, oil finish, engraved in gold, shipped May 6th, 1878 to Order No. 11739. This rifle is pictured on page 146 of "Winchester Engraving", Wilson, with both sides of receiver in full detail with the attribution to John Ulrich. It is also pictured, likewise in full detail on page 114 of "The Winchester Book", Madis, 1985 Edition. This exquisite gun was made around 1872 (based on the serial number range) and is believed to have been part of the Philadelphia Exhibition of 1876 and so stated in book of Winchester engraving by R.L.Wilson. A very special opportunity to obtain a highly desirable Winchester work of art. Very fine condition. Barrel and magazine tube retain 80-90% thinning orig blue with edge wear and areas of the magazine tube turning plum. Receiver retains 60-70% strong original gold plating with the loss areas from the shaded and punch dot background areas. Flat surfaces, being better polished, retained the plating far better. Forend cap retains 60-70% original gold with some silver showing through on back edge. Buttplate retains traces of gold around edges with exposed areas a dark mustard patina. Lever and hammer retain strong case colors, only lightly faded on sides, turning grey on top edge of hammer and outer edge of lever. Wood is sound with light nicks and scratches and retains most of its orig factory oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with scattered pitting. (A) Magnificent & Outstanding Winchester Model 1876 1 of 1000 Rifle.

Lot # 105 (Sale Order: 104 of 545)

Full octagon barrel with full magazine, marked on top flat in script "ONE OF ONE THOUSAND" and so verified by numerous factory letters. Has silver bands in the engraving around breech and muzzle ends of barrels. Case colored forearm cap attached with sling swivel on bottom of cap. Also sling swivel attached to bottom of stock. Although not listed in the factory letter, sling swivels do appear to be factory installed. Receiver is case colored of an open top variation. Left side plate is marked "H.C. GOVE ALBANY NY 1877" that also is not indicated in any of the factory letters. Hammer is case colored, lever is also case colored, as is buttplate. Engraving around the "ONE OF ONE THOUSAND" on the breech end of barrel and muzzle of barrel along with a silver band present there as well. Wood is "XXX" grade with a number 21 for an assembly line number which can be found on the toe of buttplate and bottom tang as well as upper channel of stock. A slight gap exist in the wood to metal fit of the rear of tang. Case colored sideplates are void of any assembly numbers. This iconic 1876 rifle is well documented by numerous factory letters dating back to 1965 and is pictured and described in great detail in Edmund Lewis's great book "THE STORY OF THE WINCHESTER 1 OF 1000 AND 1 OD 100 RIFLES" on page 92. Stock is of an early style with a round knob for a pistol grip. No caliber markings can be found as early 1876's omitted caliber markings. The gun can be traced back to Richard P. Mellon in a factory letter dated February 18, 1965. Of the Model 1876's "1 of 1000" produced, this was the fourth one made and only a few were produced with any inscription with no mention of sling swivels, inscription on sideplate; once again clerical oversights in recording less important features such as these were common in record keeping. This rifle was awarded a Silver Medal at the Annual Meeting of the National Rifle Association in 1962. Overall fine to very fine. Barrel would rate a solid 95-97% blue with magazine tube rating a 90-95% blue with one rub mark towards muzzle end of barrel. Forearm cap retains 60-70% case color. Left side of receiver retains 70-80% case color and right side is of 30-35% color. Loading gate retains 85-90% Nitre blue. Hammer with dark colors mostly turning to a light to medium patina as the lever is mostly silvered out with maybe 20-30% colors remaining. Buttplate is mostly silvered out with maybe 5% color in protected areas. Wood is with very few impressions and surface scratches on left side with one nick of wood missing next to receiver on left side of stock. Checkering has few bruises that would indicate any mishandling, either on the left side or the right side. Checkering on the forearm is of the same condition, very few bumps or bruises in the checkering. Carrier lifter is of a medium mustard color with very few light scratches. Right side is of same impressions with fewer surface scratches and no chips, cracks, or splinters of wood missing at all. Bore is excellent and action cycles properly. Mechanics are fine. (A) Magnificent Henry 1860 Rifle Engraved & Silver Plated With Deluxe Wood (1st Year - 1860).

Lot # 108 (Sale Order: 107 of 545)

This is an important example of an exhibition quality factory engraved and silver finished Henry rifle. Octagon barrel is roll stamped "HENRY'S PATTERN DATE OCT 16, 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT". Hammer is case colored as is the lever and trigger. Stock is deluxe grade American walnut with high piano finish. All screws are numbered to the gun, as the stock is numbered to receiver. Buttplate is also numbered to stock and receiver. Rear barrel is cut for a dovetail but is blank with no sight. Top of receiver is also dovetail which houses a 1000 yard ladder sight. Receiver on left side retains 35-45% sliver plating, right side 50-55% silver plating. Engraving is of a similar style as the Gideon Welles Henry serial number '9' and is attributed to Samuel Hoggson. These extremely early Henry rifles where predominately presented to individuals of great importance. As is well known that these presentations went to the President of the United States, Secretary of War and the Secretary of the Navy. It is only a wonder to whom this magnificent example was intended for. This extraordinary rifle is pictured and discussed on page 14 of R.L Wilson's fine treatise "WINCHESTER ENGRAVING". Accompanied by a deluxe leather bound limited edition of "Winchester Engraving" by Larry Wilson, No. 11/50. Bright and shiny bore with deep rifling, minor surface pitting. Mechanics need some attention as the carrier lifter spring is weak, otherwise mechanics are crisp. Barrel is a 40-60% light blue with balance turning patina. Standard rolled address on barrel that is very readable. Stock retains 96% original piano finish to deluxe wood with a crack in the forward portion of grip area of stock. This is a common break in Henry rifles with highly figured stocks. Right side of stock has light surface scratches with few impressions with another crack in stock that goes from bottom tang to upper tang. Overall condition is fine. This very early First Model Henry Rifle would certainly be the centerpiece of any advanced Winchester collection. Octagon barrel is roll stamped "HENRY'S PATTERN DATE OCT 16, 1860 ...more/ MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. (A) Fabulous Antique Engraved Winchester Model 1894 Rifle (1898).

Lot # 114 (Sale Order: 113 of 545)

Round barrel, full magazine with barrel having engraving on breech end only and gold banded. Forend cap is engraved and also has a gold band. Forward and back positions of receiver have gold bands. Comes factory engraved with a "B" style carved wood on stock and forearm and listed as $14.00 according factory letter. Engraving is a $24.00 with gold as documented by factory letter. Case color hammer engraved and lever is case color and is also engraved. Wood looks to be at least XXX wood, with buttplate being shotgun buttplate and with gold wire at top. Engraving on bottom of receiver as well as lever link. Extensive engraving throughout, even on the back portion of the breech bolt. Factory white sheet confirms all these options with the exception of the set trigger and also lists the gun as having been received in the warehouse on March 25, 1898 and shipped from warehouse on March 25, 1898 with order No. 4781. A great rarity is the special stock dimensions found on a Winchester lever action rifle . This is a great rarity. Repair and return on March 10, 1899 as well as a repair and return on December 2, 1903 at which point the set trigger was obviously replaced with a single, non-set trigger. Accompanied by a Winchester Repeating Arms records letter confirming the configuration of this wonderful rifle. The letter indicates: Rifle, .30 caliber, 22" round barrel, set trigger, fancy pistol grip, shotgun butt, extra light, carved $14.00, engraved $24.00, drop at comb 1-1/2", at heel 3-3/16", pull at comb 13-7/8", at center 13-5/8", at toe 14-1/8"; Received warehouse March 25th, 1898. Fine to very fine condition. Round barrel with standard two line barrel marking, also rolled marked with "NICKEL STEEL BARREL / ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" markings on left side. Caliber marking on top portion of barrel. Condition would rate 95% blue. Magazine tube would rate 95-97% blue. Forend cap is good, 95-97% blue. Left side of receiver retains a good 95% blue with light surface scratches. Right side with about same amount of surface scratches and retains at least 95-97% blue. Bottom of receiver shows strong blue on lever link and belly of receiver as well, to about 97-98%. Hammer rates a 70-80% case color and is engraved. Lever with 75-85% case color, vivid in spots and is also engraved. Letter indicates that rifle came equipped with set trigger, but has obviously been changed out for some reason. This indicates as that the lower tang does not match up to the receiver as it should. Also, lower tang does not sport grade of wood that accompanies rifle. Tang is marked "7132" on lower tang with no "Xs" for the grade of wood. Stock is marked on back "5467" and buttplate is also marked with "5467". This I believe is the original assembly line number as the carving on the wood matches the rest of gun. Grade of wood looks to be a XXX with light surface impressions, scratches on left side and the same amount on right side. Overall finish would rate 85-90% finish remaining. Also looks like air or some liquid got underneath the finish and looks much lighter in color; this is on top heel of stock. Wood has had a professional repair; upper part next to receiver, where tang and receiver meet on both sides of the stock. Stock comes equipped with pistol grip cap. Remaining blue on buttplate would be a 90-97% and its dull in color and looks to have been factory reblued. All screw heads are factory engraved. Bore indicates usage, still shiny but not very bright; cycles properly. Mechanics are fine. Fine to very fine for overall condition, with it being antique factory engraved with gold wire; an extremely rare Model 1894. From the Ray Bentley Collection.Barrel Length: 22"Caliber/Bore: .30 WCFFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1894Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 37955 CORRECTION: After further examination and research, it has been discovered that the finish on the receiver has been professionally restored. The restoration involved the refinishing of the receiver. This rifle was previously featured in the February 1995 edition of “THE GUN REPORT”.
