(A) Awesome A. Tonks of Boston Best Grade Jones Underlever Double Hammer 8 Bore Shotgun.

Lot # 228 (Sale Order: 226 of 545)

This extremely rare eight gauge by A. Tonks of Boston, Massachusetts is the only example observed by this cataloger. Alfred Tonks of Boston as a maker of percussion revolvers and double shotguns is listed in Frank Seller's book "American Gunsmiths". It has "Laminated" barrels with a smooth top rib which is inscribed "Lamenated Steel", a small brass front bead, and has a nicely engraved dolls head extension and a small ribbon of engraving at the breech end. The barrels are otherwise unmarked. The frame is nicely scroll engraved with sculpted fences. Hammers are large in size and are nicely scroll engraved and knurled on tops. Both lockplates are engraved "A. Tonks." Bottom of action is scroll engraved and long tang trigger guard is as well. Grip cap is nicely carved in big tops pattern. Buttstock is checkered in two point pattern through the wrist and is of quarter-sawn American walnut with unengraved brass oval near toe and checkered horn buttplate. The forearm is nicely checkered in three point pattern with triangular multi-level button tip. The gun has double triggers and extractors, no safety. Very fine overall and appears mostly as found with great screws throughout. Action retains around 30% original case color, balance having turned silver. Stocks with good checkering show minor scratches and impressions. Bores show some minor pits but are excellent for a gun of this vintage. Mechanics are fine. This is an extremely rare American finished side by side and likely the only example one will ever have to add this maker to your collection.Barrel Length: 32"Barrel Wall Thickness: (L) .044 (R) .051Chamber : 3 - 1/2"Choke: (L) IMP. (M) Rare and Historic Masters Gunmakers Ltd. Boxlock Ejector Single Trigger "Regal" Grade Light Game

Lot # 236 (Sale Order: 234 of 545)

Former Churchill production director and author of "The House of Churchill" book, Don Masters, acquired a number of actions and parts with the dissolution of the company, and started to build guns under his name (Masters From Churchill). This is the fourth gun in this series, as related by him in the epilogue of "The House of Churchill". The action and barrels are illustrated in the white on page 463. On page 461, he relates "two years later, Lou ordered a Masters 20 bore, 28" gun No. 004 with Anson & Deeley action, ejectors, and a non-selective single trigger. Both these guns were essentially "Regal" guns." As stated, this gun No. 004 has 28" dovetailed barrels fitted with slightly raised flat matted rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Masters Gunmakers Ltd" "Cannon Works. Ockley Road. Durking. Surrey. England." Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. Serial number is engraved on bottom of right barrel. Case hardened ogee backed boxlock action with well filed beads features non-automatic safety and single non-selective trigger. Action is engraved in traditional "Regal" style with 50% coverage well cut scroll with rose bouquet highlights. "MASTERS" is in scrolled ribands on each side. Blued floorplate with more scroll is also engraved with well rendered vignette of woodcock flushing through birch trees. This scene is signed "J. R. Beech". Top lever and double beaded small bow trigger guard are also blued and scroll engraved. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Attractive, darkly streaked, and well figured European walnut straight grip buttstock with checkered wood butt. Classic point pattern checkering is at grip, and a gold oval engraved "L. B. D." is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in high quality leather case with stitched leather corners, and dark brown canvas outer cover. Outer cover and top of case are embossed with initials "L. B. D." Interior of case is lined in burgundy cloth, and has Masters paper trade label in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment, snap caps, and a round oil bottle. Also in case are two letters, one with invoice for this gun, and the other from the original owner relating its history and hunting venues. This letter has been annotated by a later owner with places where he has used the gun. Also included is a copy of "The House of Churchill" by Don Masters, with more owners notes. Excellent, showing limited field use. Barrels retain nearly all of their original blue with some light marks and high edge wear. Action retains approximately 90% original case hardening color, silvered on fences and along edges of bottom, as well as top tang. Former Churchill production director and author of "The House of Churchill" book, Don Masters, acquired a number of actions and parts with the dissolution of the company,...more and started to build guns under his name (Masters From Churchill). There is also slight loss to blue on thumbpiece of top lever, front of trigger plate, and beads, as well as grip of trigger guard. Stocks have a few light marks in their original finish. (M) Interesting Masters Gunmakers Boxlock Ejector Single Trigger Game Gun with Case.

Lot # 245 (Sale Order: 243 of 545)

Former Churchill production director and author of the "House of Churchill" book, Don Masters, acquired a number of actions and parts with the dissolution of the company, and started to build guns under his name (Masters From Churchill). This is the second gun in this series, as related by him in the epilogue of the "House of Churchill". On page 461, he says "Lou ordered a Masters 12 bore, 28" best gun No. 018 with Anson & Deeley action and ejectors. On this occasion, Lou supplied his own wood for the "round-head" stock to Mick Webster, the stocker." As stated, this gun No. 018 has 28" dovetailed barrels fitted with slightly raised flat rib. Tops of barrels are engraved "Masters Gunmakers Ltd" "Cannon Works. Durking. Surrey. England." Barrel flats are stamped with Birmingham nitro proofs for 2-3/4" chambers. Serial number is engraved on bottoms of barrels. Blued floorplate has more scroll. Top lever and double beaded small bow trigger guard are also blued and scroll engraved. Serial number is on trigger guard tang. Classically laid out, dark veined and feather figured European walnut straight grip buttstock with checkered wood butt. Classic point pattern checkering is at grip, and a gold oval engraved "L. B. D." is on toe line. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Gun is housed in green canvas case with stitched leather corners. Top of case is embossed with initials "L. B. D." Interior is lined in green cloth, and has Masters paper trade label in lid. Case contains cleaning equipment, snap caps, and a round oil bottle. Also in case are two letters, one with invoice for this gun, and the other from the original owner relating its history and hunting venues. Excellent, showing limited field use. Barrels retain nearly all of their original blue with some very light marks and high edge wear. Action retains approximately 97%+ original case hardening color, slightly silvered on fences and along edges of bottom, as well as top tang. There is also slight loss to blue on thumbpiece of top lever, and beads, as well as grip of trigger guard. Stocks have a few light marks in their original finish. Bores are excellent. Action is tight. Ejectors are in time. Trigger works. Case is excellent with few marks. Interior cloth is excellent, with some rubs. Label is very clean. Accessories are excellent. (C) Stunning WWII Stevens 520-30 Trenchgun with Sling.

Lot # 251 (Sale Order: 249 of 545)

Cylinder bore barrel with proper "P" proof and bomb on right side of chamber ring, and correct ventilated heat shield with bayonet lug for the pattern 1917 bayonet. Smooth plain walnut stocks marked "520-30" and "US" on left side with ordnance "P" and bomb on left side of receiver. Mounted with a supple BOYT 1943 leather sling.
