(A) Splendid British Proofed Winchester Model 1886 2nd Model Rifle (1887).

Lot # 127 (Sale Order: 126 of 545)      

Round barrel with beaded front sight and Express three leaf rear sight. Top of barrel marked "50EX" next to receiver. Standard two line address at right top of barrel. Forearm cap is case colored. Receiver is case colored. Loading gate is of high nitre blue finish. Hammer and lever is case colored, trigger is blue. Stock is high grade American walnut marked with 2X with an assembly line number on lower tang "450" and upper channel of stock with the same number. "H" style checkering on both stock and forearm with a black ebony insert in pistol grip. Stock is of a shotgun style with metal buttplate and it has the same assembly numbers. Sling eyes mounted to bottom of stock and forearm cap. The barrel is 95-96% original blue and marked with British proofs with some scratch marks on the bottom of the barrel indicating that nosecap and magazine tube were disassembled. Forearm cap retains 95-97% orig vivid case color. Left side of receiver 95-97% original case color with light discoloration at front of receiver also with British proof mark. Breech bolt has 98% blue with a British proof on the rear of the breech bolt. Right side of receiver 97% original vivid case colors, loading gate has 98-99% bright nitre blue. Bottom of the receive retains 90-95% case colors. The earliest .50 caliber known is in the 19000 serial number range. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Records research indicating the rifle was shipped as a round barreled rifle and chambered for the .40-82 cartridge with deluxe checkered pistol grip stocks. Buffalo Bill Historical center research personnel have confirmed that other rifles with this order where returned to the factory by Jas, Kerr & Co. for return and repair. This could explain the caliber change. Wood is 2X grade high grade American walnut with a few compressions and scratches on both sides. No bruises indicated in the checkering on the stock or forearm. Small slivers of wood missing on both sides of the tang next to receiver. Black ebony insert. Buttplate about 80-90% blue. Bright shiny bore with sharp rifling. Cycles properly, mechanics are fine. Half octagon rapid taper barrel. Dual game scene engraved with vignette of whitetail deer with forest scene in background surrounded by intertwined scrolls and floral arabesque. Chiseled rope border with small scrolls and border outlining tang and top of receiver ring. Opposite side of receiver is same scroll and floral arabesque with vignette of bounding stag or whitetail deer. Muzzle and breech of barrel have small scrolls with gold bands at each end. Bead sporting front sight with three leaf folding express sight at rear. Receiver is mounted with Lyman Model 21 "Climbin' Lyman" side sight. Two piece checkered American walnut stocks with pistol grip are highly figured and are XXX grade as verified by tang markings. Steel shotgun butt. The 1895 Winchester rifle is found with some of the rarest examples of embellishment and engraving patterns. This rifle with its extra length special order barrel, gold inlays, dual game scene engraving and special order deluxe stocks is really a unique rifle. Chambered in the very rare .38-72 cartridge and being an antique make this a rare opportunity to own a very special Winchester rifle. Very fine as completely restored. Very good bore with sharp rifling. Crisp mechanics. Several minor bruises and scratches on deluxe stocks as well as slightly worn checkering. Shipped August 25th, 1897 as a .30 caliber rifle (.30-40); letter states wrong caliber and does not mention deluxe. (A) Fantastic Winchester First Model 1873 Rifle with Blued Receiver and Set Trigger (1876).

Round barrel with full magazine. Forearm cap blued which retains a sling swivel as does bottom of the stock. Receiver is blued, dust cover is blued, and loading gate is a bright nitre blue. Case colored hammer, lever and trigger. Mounted with a straight grain American walnut. Upper tang is sporting a thick base long range veneer tang sight. Buttplate is case colored and retains no cleaning rods behind trap door. No caliber markings on barrel and no caliber markings on carrier lifter. Front sight is of the German silver variety with a short early acorn type rear barrel sight. Screw heads look to remain untouched with majority of case color still present on the screw heads. Lower tang fits receiver very fine. Set trigger functions properly. Round barrel retains 95-97% original blue. Magazine 96-98% blue with a few light scratches on bottom of tube. Forearm cap is 97% bright blue. Receiver is 95-96% original blue, 85-95% on right side with the side plate showing some patina underneath the blue. Hammer retains 90% case color, lever is 40-60% case color with balance turning a medium to dark patina. Trigger looks to be of a blue variety and retains 90-95% blue. Lower tang 90-95% bright blue. Straight grain American wood with few surface scratches and a few compressions on left side and a dark bruise on right side in middle of stock with some smaller compression otherwise, also retains a few light scratches. No wood missing around upper or lower tang, no cracks evident. Buttplate retains a good strong 80-90% strong case colors with the balance mellowing out. Bore is good with strong rifling and no surface pitting. Cycles properly and mechanics are fine. Absolutely an astounding example of the First Model 1873 Winchester rifle. Full octagon barrel with full magazine and rolled die address on barrel that reads "WINCHESTERS REPEATING ARM NEW HAVEN, CT / KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866 OCTOBER 16, 1860". Forearm cap is case colored. Receiver is case colored. Oval thumbprint dust cover is blued. Hammer, lever and trigger are case colored. American deluxe grade walnut sporting a "X" deluxe grade with assembly No. 399 found in upper channel of stock and bottom portion of toe of buttplate. Sports the course style checkering pattern that wraps from one side to the other. Forearm also of an early style checkering pattern. This checkering pattern is the same as found on the famed '1 of 1000' rifles and some Second Model Winchesters. Bottom tang fits receiver as it should, looks as though it has not been removed. Accompanied by a factory research letter confirming the configuration with the deluxe checkered stock and shipment in May of 1878. Octagon barrel retains 96-97% bright blue, sports a front sight of a German silver insert, short base rear barrel sight and has serrated edges. This sight is common on early Winchesters. No caliber markings as all First Models were of the same caliber. Also no caliber markings on carrier lifter. Magazine tube retains 93-95% blue with balance turning to a dark plum. Magazine tube guide ring is 90-95% blue, forearm cap has turned to a light pewter color with just shadows of case color. Receiver left side retains 90% bright case colors with balance mellowing. Right side is 65-75% case colors, bright on side plate on right side but has mellowed out on receiver but still very evident, just not bright colors. Loading gate is a bright nitre blue, 98%. Dust cover with oval thumbprint is 85-90% blue. Hammer retains 80% case color with a slight drag line. Lever has mellowed to soft case colors on flats of lever and silvery on bottom of lever. Fancy American grade walnut is of light surface scratches, light impressions. Checkering has only a few bruised checkering marks on both right and left side. Right side of stock has a long impression of about 4" to 4-1/2" that runs from front to back. Few surface scratches. Wood to metal fit is very fine with no splits or chips. Four piece cleaning rod is present behind trap door; buttplate has 10-20% case colors, the balance has mellowed out. Deep rifling, bright shiny bore with moderate pitting in bottom of grooves. Standard "H" style checkering with a high piano finish on both stock and forearm. An absolutely stunning example with a Cody Firearms records certificate confirming the configuration: rifle, caliber .38, octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock with pistol grip, and shipped October 31st, 1891. Barrel retains 95-96% of its bright original blue, magazine tube with 96-97% original blue. Case colored receiver retains 98% of its original case colors, vivid in most areas. Right side is 80% case colors that remain vivid with the balance somewhat mellowed out but still visible. Hammer retains 98% of its case colors without any drag line. (A) Stunningly Pristine Winchester Model 1886 .40-82 WCF Rifle (1891).

Full octagon barrel with sporting front sight and elevator adjustable rear sight. Full magazine. Two piece American straight grained walnut stocks finished with factory varnish and crescent butt. Vivid case colored receiver with matching case colors on fore end cap and buttplate. Two line Winchester New Haven address. This outstanding rifle is as new and has no indication of actual use. Accompanied by Cody Firearms Research document confirming configuration and manufacture dates as: rifle, caliber .40-82 Winchester, octagon barrel, plain trigger; received in warehouse March 26th, 1891 and shipped from warehouse April 17th, 1891. The 1886 was Winchester's perfected large bore high powered lever action rifle. These rifles where purchased and used extensively throughout the Rocky Mountains as well as the Western frontier. The North Woods of America where these big bore rifles were used to hunt most all big game, as well as utilized by lawmen in the course of their duties. This is just a few of the reasons that these early production rifles are very infrequently found in extremely fine condition. This example is in an unprecedented state of original preservation. There is only the slightest trace of edge wear at the muzzle and several minute pressure marks from handling and storage in the fore arm and butt stock. Virtually all the original factory applied blue finish remains. The case colors are near perfection with all the factory lacquer remaining on the receiver and fore end cap. slight edge wear at edges of buttplate. The hammer and lever have most all of the vivid colors and the lever still has the slight puddles of excess lacquer just as it did when it left the factory. This outstanding example could not be improved upon. After 127 years this rifle is a true time capsule. Full octagon barrel with a standard German silver blade insert front sight and buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges. Magazine is of a half magazine type. Forearm cap blued, receiver blued with a high nitre blued loading gate. Dust cover is blued. Hammer, trigger and lever are all case colored. Upper tang is mounted with a 62A (lollipop) sight. Third Model 1873 variation with integral dust cover rib. Standard grade American straight grain walnut with a case colored buttplate. Stock retains a four piece cleaning rod behind the trap door in buttplate. Octagon barrel retains 96% original blue with light scratches on left flat of barrel near the front sight. Nosecap retains 95% blue also with light scratches. Receiver left side retains 97% blue with only light edge wear showing, right side with a few light scratches on side plate. Receiver with small amount of surface discoloration. Loading gate with 98% strong nitre blue. Hammer is dark case colored at 96%. Lever mellowed out somewhat on bottom of lever to a light patina, dark case colors on the sides. Trigger sports a light patina. Lollipop sight retains 98% of its blue. The lower tang fits the receiver perfectly and condition of blue on lower tang between 90-95%. Buttplate retains 55-65% case colors with balance turning patina. Wood is with light scratches, few impressions, overall with no wood missing around receiver or upper and lower tang. Forearm has light impressions overall 90-95% finish remaining with no chips or missing wood. Screw heads all look very fine with the exception of the screw for the side plate. Bore bright and shiny with no apparent pitting. Mechanics are fine and rifle cycles properly. Shipped September 10th, 1887 as a .44 caliber octagon barrel rifle with half magazine. Features full octagon barrel, half magazine, beaded front sight, case colored forearm cap, case colored receiver with blue nitre loading gate, case colored hammer and lever with blued trigger. Comes with a correct and period tang sight. Comes equipped with fancy high grade American walnut stock. Buttplate is case colored with a toe down buttplate. Standard 'H' style checkering with an black ebony insert on the pistol grip. Forend checkering matches the style of the stock. This is a First Model '86 with square corners on the receiver where the stock fits the receiver. Octagon barrel is 95-96% original blue with some light discoloration on the top flat of barrel. Forearm cap retains 80-85% case color, bright colors but not vivid. Left side of receiver the case colors are vivid as is the right side, the loading gate with its nitre blue is 90% with a slight discoloration in the flute. Hammer retains 98% colors. Lever is 90% case colors with the bottom portion of lever turning silver. The high grade American walnut stock has a few impressions and very few light scratches on the left side. The right side is with a few compressions and light scratches, a small chip about 1/2" to 9-16" l missing from the right side where the tang and receiver meet. No bruise marks on the checkering to indicate hard use and no bruise marks on the stock. Stock finish when observed under high intensity light has evidence of finish starting to lift from wood. This is a common occurrence of original early piano varnish finishes. Lower tang is marked with a No. 386 assembly line number and XX to indicate grade of wood, also the assembly line number is in the chamber of stock and butt. Bore is bright with sharp rifling. Rifle cycles correctly, mechanics are fine. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms record research that confirms the configuration of this rifle. Half round half octagon barrel with half magazine. Blued forearm cap, receiver and dust cover. Case colored hammer, lever and trigger. Straight grain American walnut stock with four piece cleaning rod behind trapdoor in buttplate. German silver insert front sight, short base type rear barrel sight with knurling on the side. Top flat of barrel with no caliber marking and no caliber marking on carrier lifter. 44-40 was the standard chambering for the 1873 model so the absence of markings was frequently encountered. Special barrel features and the half magazine as well as being ordered with blue finish receiver make this a wonderful special order rifle. Barrel retains 96% original blue with a small portion next to front sight on right hand side turning a patina color. Forearm cap is 97-98% original blue, left side of receiver retains 98% orig blue with few light scratches and few surface discoloration on upper corner of sideplate. Right side or receiver 98-99% new with a few spots of discoloration on back end of receiver only. Case colored hammer has 95-97% dark colors. Lever on flats sides retain 90-95% with bottom portion of lever turning to a light patina color. Bottom of receiver is a 97-98% orig bright blue with carrier lifter a mustard medium color. Lower tang fits receiver very fine. Condition is 90-95% with only discoloration around locking lever. Hammer is case colored as is lever, with the trigger in a blue condition. Buttplate is a toe down version with case colors. Wood is of a straight grained American walnut as is the forearm. A very high condition Model '86 in a small caliber. These early Model 1886 rifles where quite typically used hard as tools by hunters, ranchers and lawmen. They are rarely found in this prime near new condition. The round barrel retains 96-97% original blue sporting a front sight of a number 21 with the German silver blade insert. Magazine tube retains 93-96% original blue toning on the bottom somewhat. Forearm cap is case colored and retains 80-90% dark case colors. Receiver on the left side is 98% original vivid case colors with a slight surface discoloration in the forward edge of the receiver. Right side is 97-98% original case colors with the loading gate retaining 97% nitre blue. American straight grained walnut stock with few impressions and few scratches, with chips of wood missing or cracks showing. Right side with a couple of dings around the grip area with a few light impressions and a few light scratches. Hammer retains 95-96% case color with a drag line indicated on right side of hammer. Lever sports bright case colors throughout with the inner loop showing medium to dark patina with traces of slight puddling of the factory applied lacquer in the very protected areas. Barrel band is blued and receiver is blued. Loading gate is of a bright nitre blue. Dust cover is bright blue. Hammer is case colored, lever is case colored with trigger being case colored. Carbine buttplate is also case colored. Stock is of a deluxe grade but is not marked on lower tang as such. Carrier lifter is marked "45-75". Accompanied by a November 1994 dated Winchester Factory Records letter. This letter denotes that the carbine was shipped with 404 other arms in 1885 as a carbine with no other information available. Barrel retains 85-90% original blue with rub mark about 3" from rear of sight. Nosecap retains 90-95% original blue and barrel band is 75-80% original blue. Left side of receiver is 93-96% blue with front portion of side plate thinning. Top of receiver over chamber area is turning a medium to dark patina with dust cover retaining 93-95% blue with a little surface oxidation. Right side of receiver with minor surface scratches on back end of side plate with some oxidation to flat area of receiver. Balance of blue still retains 93-96% blue. Hammer retains 95% case color with a small drag line. Lever is 60-75% case color with bottom portion of lever mostly silvered out. Buttplate with 20-30% case colors with surface oxidation. No caliber marking on top flat of barrel nor caliber marking on brass carrier lifter. A feature that sometimes Second Models do have caliber markings when the .38-40 was introduced around the time of this serial number. Comes with sling swivels mounted on stock but none are attached to bottom of forearm cap. Receiver is drilled for a carbine saddle ring stud but appears to have never had one. Comes with a factory white sheet indicating all options with exception of stock retaining sling swivel. Very fine overall. Barrel retains solid 98% original blue with slight pin pricking on top of round barrel next to flat surface area. Front sight is of the German silver type that retains 95% of its blue. Rear sight has been broken in two. Forearm cap sporting 95-97% bright case colors. Receiver on left side 95-97% original case colors with majority of colors being bright and shiny. Right side 95-97% bright shiny case colors with loading gate in a bright nitre blue at 98-99%. Bottom of receiver has strong colors, just not bright. Hammer retains 95-97% of its colors with a small drag line. Lever with 50-60% case color, strong on flat sides of lever and light to medium patina on bottom of lever. Wood has had additional finish applied and sports a few surface scratches and dings with one chip of wood missing on bottom tang next to receiver. Also right side of stock is stamped right above sling swivel "EM GOODALL" and in the same place on the right side. Also on high part of the stock a few surface scratches and impressions. Buttplate houses four piece cleaning rod behind trap door and buttplate has 98% vivid case colors. Forearm has light compression, small amount of surface scratches and no chips or missing pieces of wood. Bright shiny bore, minor surface pitting in chamber area of barrel. Cycles correctly, mechanics are fine. Factory research states that serial No. 81427 was shipped on January 21st, 1882 as a half octagon rifle with case hardened finish. Caliber marking on bottom of carrier lifter "32 CAL". A high condition 1873 that would be difficult to improve upon. Third Model variation with integral dust cover rail. Barrel retains 95% original blue. Blued receiver has 97% blue with very light scratches on side plate. Right side is 98% blue with only a few light marks that did not penetrate the blue. Case colored hammer retains 96-98% case colors turning dark. Lever is 96% case colors, quite evident on sides and starting to silver out on the bottom of the lever. Straight grain stock has few surface scratches, impressions and retains 98% of its original finish with no chips or cracks on upper or lower tang. Right side with a few more surface scratches and impression but still retains 97-98% finish. Forearm has light surface scratches, overall 96% finish with no splinters or chips of wood missing, and no cracks. Bore is excellent with sharp rifling. A full octagon barrel sporting a Marble's beaded front sight and an Express rear sight. Full magazine. Forearm cap is blued with a sling eye attached to the bottom, also sling attached to the bottom of the stock. Has blued receiver, proof mark on top of receiver and barrel in front of "44 WCF" caliber. Stock is rosewood with a fancy finish, checkered in "H" style pattern that wraps around the bottom of the stock to the other side. Hammer is case colored. Lever is case colored. Trigger is blued. Buttplate is blue. Comes with assembly No. 416 that is indicated on bottom tang where a "46" is located but X'ed out. No markings on the buttplate. On the back of the stock another No. 3650 with No. 94 positioned below it. The "94" believed to be for the Model '94, so 94's and 92's are interchangeable. The upper channel of the stock is marked with No. 416. Full octagon barrel retains 95% original blue. Magazine tube is 93-96% original blue with a clear coating of some finish located at the end of the magazine. Forearm cap retains 20-30% blue with the balance turning to a medium patina. The left side of the receiver retains 95-96% blue with some minor surface scratches. The right side of the receiver retains 95% blue with some light stains mainly on the back end. Bottom of receiver is 20-30% blue with the balance in a dark patina. Receiver is proof marked as indicated and stands out as not being refinished. Stock has on the left side minor surface scratches and impressions with one ding next to the sling eyelet on the bottom of stock. Right side has minor surface scratches with a few compression marks near the toe of the buttplate. Checkering has very few compression marks, remains sharp but not redone, on both sides. No chips or slivers of wood to indicate abuse. An extremely rare straight gripped deluxe. Screw heads half of them are boogered up. Fine to very fine overall, an extremely rare '92 with rosewood stock. Factory letter states it was originally shipped March 15th, 1897 in full nickel with fancy finish redwood stock, octagon barrel and in .44 caliber. It was received back to the warehouse eight times between May 11th, 1897 and December 7th, 1901; probably for a salesman's sample as factory records indicate all billing is to be to Ex. Show case sample account. Bore is excellent with sharp rifling. Rifle cycles correctly, mechanics are fine. Recent manufacture. Blued steel barrel with drift adjustable front sight. Faux Colt's single line address on top. Faithful reproduction with flattop case colored frame with folding leaf rear sight. One piece highly figured walnut grip with extended hammer screw to facilitate the attaching of the supplied brass shoulder stock. Manufactured in the known Buntline serial range this example is serial No. 28820. Black powder pattern frame and bullseye ejector. The only indications this revolver was made by Aldo Uberti are two small markings found on the interior of the trigger guard and backstrap, both are marked with an "AU". Numbers where found to be matching on underside of barrel, cylinder, grip, frame, backstrap and trigger guard. Assembly numbers where observed on underside of frame and loading gate. Brass detachable shoulder stock is No. 10 on toe and fits well when attached. This is a wonderful recreation of the iconic Buntline Special as carried by Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. Very fine overall as being artificially aged on barrel and grip straps to give the appearance of being older than actuality. Bore and mechanics are excellent and crisp. This spectacular sterling silver lidded trophy cup is hallmarked for London 1885 with silver maker's mark of Charles Stewart Harris. The base is stamped "J. W. Benson. 62 & 64. Ludgate Hill. London." Overall height is 21-1/2" and the gross weight is 2950 grams (94.8 Troy Ounces), approximately $1,500 in silver value. The cup is engraved "Presented by the Proprietors of The Daily Telegraph, 1885, All Comers Prize." Features relief chiseled acanthus leaves around the base, relief decorated foliate handles and five deeply struck English hallmarks. The reverse side of this cup is engraved "National Rifle Association. Wimbledon Meeting 1885, Won by Sergeant P. McCowan, 1st P.R.V./Score - 4555555/Tie 555." The base is tarnished, but virtually dent free. No visible repairs or dents. Features a gilt washed interior. The lid features a kneeling figural soldier with musket, measures 3". The tureen was cast with repousse floral decoration and stippled accents. The hallmarked base measures 6-1/2" long, height is 5-1/2", one side is engraved "Thorley's Special Prize" and the other side is engraved "Presented to/William "Buffalo Bill" Cody/By the/Wyoming Cattleman's Association." (B) Silver-plated whiskey flask, measures 8" high by 4" wide, and is engraved with a cowboy and bucking bronco, inscribed "Let-er Buck". It is inscribed "Practice day, high gun on all targets, 1927, won by E.W. Myers." It has an inset enameled pin for the California Trap Shooters Association. Measures 12-1/4" tall, no lid, base measures 5-1/2" in diameter. Features a 4" military figure holding a rifle and leaning against a tree, the cup is inscribed "A testimonial presented to Capt. Alexandre George Bax by the Commanding Officers. and members of the 36th Middlesex "Paddington" Rifle Volunteers as a mark of esteem and appreciation of his services while adjutant of the Regiment during a period of nearly six years Jany. 29th, 1867." Pair of Hallmarked Presentation Sterling Silver Victorian Catrigdge Boxes and Belt.

Both cartridge boxes are made of wood and leather with hallmarked sterling silver lid and furniture. One features an applied gilt brass intertwined "VR" under a crown for Victoria Rex, Queen of England. Box lid measures 7-1/2" long, 3" tall, with four hallmarks, furniture is also hallmarked. This example has a leather and gilded belt with gilt hardware. The second box is identical in shape and construction with a different style border engraving, four hallmarks on front and hardware is also hallmarked. Lid features a large applied gilt brass eagle. Silver Plated 1887 Pennsylvania Championship Rifle Figural Trophy.

Manufacturer stamped "Rogers & Smith Co./Meridan, CT"/ No. 1200". The base is 16" tall and 5" wide, 19-1/2" tall with lid, features a 3-1/4" tall figure of a Civil War soldier and carbine. Base has four halfstock percussion sporting rifles that measure 6-3/4", as well as two hunting bags, four shot clusters and wreath. One side of cup is engraved with a target while the other side is dated and engraved with names of team members. Cup is virtually dent-free. Figurals are excellent and complete with no repairs. Finish is tarnished overall. A stunning early figural rifle trophy. From the Ray Bentley Collection.

Measures 15" in height with a 4-3/4" base, cup is supported by three 6-3/4" military muskets and a 2-1/4" military figural soldier is perched atop the lid. The base is stamped "J.G. & Sons" and "1765". The cup has three oval inscription panels, the first reads "Presented for annual competition to the 2nd Battery 1st Fifeshire Artillery Volunteers, Newport by Alexander Scott, Esq. Banker, Dundee, the first Chief Magistrate of the burgh of Newport, 1887," The second panel is inscribed "Won by Sergt. B. H. W. Rithhie 1st Sept, 1888." Beneath it is listed the winners for the following years: 1897-1904. The last panel is inscribed "1st V.B.R.H. Newport Detachment, 1897." The two additional winners are inscribed between for 1905 and 1906. The cup itself features repousse florals and chased designs, as well as scalloped edges. Excellent; has been polished. No repairs.
