(A) Rare Experimental 1873 Ring Lever Rifle with Internal Striker.

Lot # 203 (Sale Order: 201 of 545)

Features octagon barrel with standard two line Winchester address, sporting front sight and elevator adjustable rear sight. This 1879 produced rifle started like as a special order rifle with stock 1" longer than standard with no barrel, no magazine and was received and shipped the same day in August of 1879. The rifle has the internal striker mechanism designed, patented and installed by J.H Salter in September of 1880. This rifle was the subject of a wonderful article by noted Winchester authorities Rob Kassab and Rick Hill. The builder and inventor of St. Mary's, Pennsylvania was granted two patents for Winchester lever action innovations or "improvements of firearms" as was noted in his patent application. The internal striker conversion is masterfully done and it appears it was done using the original Winchester bolt and lever. This system closely resembles Baron Von Nolckens system that was initiated on the Winchester 1866 years before. A fantastic Winchester patent model with a rich history. Included with this rifle is the factory letter confirming the configuration at time of shipment as well as copies of the "The Winchester Collector" magazine with two articles pertaining to this rifle. Very fine condition overall with completely functioning mechanics. Excellent bore. Wood stocks have several bruises and scratches but no cracks or material loss. Tang is marked with 1990 assembly number as is the lower stock mortise. Buttplate has no internal numbers. A unique opportunity to own a piece of American innovation.Barrel Length: 24"Caliber/Bore: .44 WCFFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1873Paperwork: YesSerial Number: 36062

(A) Exceptionally Rare Winchester Model 1885 Single Shot Short Rifle (1887).

Lot # 211 (Sale Order: 209 of 545)

Rare No. 4 weight full octagon barrel with desirable Winchester globe front sight and elevator adjusted semi-buckhorn sporting rear sight. Vividly case colored flatside receiver with case colored hammer, lever and breech block. Factory varnished two piece walnut stocks with Schnabel forearm tip. Chambered for the .38 Express cartridge (.38-90). This short rifle chambered for the powerhouse .38 Express would certainly explain the ordering a heavy No. 4 weight barrel to soften the recoil. Short rifle variations of the Winchester 1885 are rare indeed, finding them in exceptional condition is certainly another thing. This example is stunning condition with vivid case colors on receiver hammer and breech block. The barrel blue is outstanding with most all remaining with a less than 5% loss of finish at the crowns of the octagon flats. The bore is exceptional, being bright and shiny with crisp rifling. The wood is equally fine with most all of the factory varnish remaining with only a few very minor detraction of several small period scratches on belly of forearm and several similar scratches on buttstock. This is am exceedingly rare and desirable variation of the Model 1885 Winchester and would be very difficult to improve upon.Barrel Length: 21"Caliber/Bore: .38 ExpressFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1885Paperwork: No Serial Number: 16474 CORRECTION: Factory research confirms every feature. Each frontiersman is holding a Winchester 1886 rifle with numerous other firearms in the background. These tools of the trade where typically one prized and valuable possessions. The 1886 is fitted within the case with the spacers being lined with what appears to be a floral printed wool blanket with firearm advertisements from numerous newsprint on the bottom of the case. The loading box is similarly fitted with green felt and hand fiited partitions for each specific item; three cans of primers, a bullet mold a can of powder, cast bullets and the loading tool itself. All covered with Buffalo hide with very thick harness of Buffalo skin straps. Very good condition overall. Over 80% factory applied blue finish remaining on the barrel and magazine. The receiver is silvered out from use, as is the buttplate. The bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. The two piece straight grained American walnut stocks retain liberal amounts of the original finish with expected finish loss at forearm. Numerous nicks, abrasions and bruises are evident but the wood is solid and full sized. The cases are aged well and the exterior fur has become weathered. Considering the exposure to the elements and period of use we consider these to be excellent and remain extremely attractive. (A) Winchester 3rd Model 1866 Lever Action Rifle with Deluxe Stocks (1874).

Lot # 215 (Sale Order: 213 of 545)

Octagon barrel with full magazine and factory sling swivels adorn this 1866 Third Model rifle. This example is mounted with XX deluxe, highly figured flame cut crotch walnut. This is also verified of its factory origin by the double X marking on lower tang denoting the grade of deluxe wood. Also factory equipped with what is known as the musket style staff rear sight that is infrequently found on sporting rifles. The 1-1/4" factory installed sling swivels, deluxe wood and unusual rear sight are all indication that this was a special order rifle. After detailed disassembly, serial number on buttplate and the barely legible stock mortis appear to be all matching. The rifle is in very good overall condition with strong traces of original finish on barrel and magazine, more so in protected areas. Gun metal brass frame and buttplate have attained a pleasant mustard yellow patina. Stocks have evidence of having been cleaned at a much earlier period as slight wood loss from sanding in evident and crackature of the highly figured walnut buttstock. Rifle remains in its original .44 Henry caliber having not been modified to the centerfire that was so frequently found. The front blade has gone away at some previous time from the front sight. Traditional Winchester two line barrel address is present on top of barrel. A small chip of wood is missing from forearm of rifle at the forward right hand side and there are numerous small nicks and abrasions, all of which appear to be of the period, are evident on the receiver.Barrel Length: 24"Caliber/Bore: .44 RFFFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1866Paperwork: No Serial Number: 124888

(A) Consecutive Pair of Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Carbines - Victorian Prison System (1884)

Lot # 217 (Sale Order: 215 of 545)

Bottom of the receiver of both carbines has the prison ID No. JR11444 and No. JR11445. Both of these carbines are Third Models that feature full round barrels, full magazine, twin barrel bands, 1873 ladder rear sights, post front sight, saddle ring and stud, walnut stocks, carbine butts and carbine buttplates with trapdoors. Consecutive Winchester numbers and consecutive prison numbers. Referred to as "Pendridge Prison Issue" with total issued somewhere between 100 and 140, these prison carbines are identified by the JR stamp and number on bottom of frame. The "JR" stamp refers to firearms retailer James Watson Rosier. Engraved on the bottom of the frame along with rack number assigned to officer. The latest serial number from the prison records is No. 434743. This pair of Winchester is listed as being shipped in 1884 and retained by serial number in the documents from the superintendent of the Pendridge Prison. The listed serial numbers total 112 firearms. The most famous of the outlaws executed at the Pendridge prison system was Ned Kelly. All of the information about these two Winchesters is included with the guns in an article taken from Winchester Collectors magazine, which mentions both guns by serial number and rack number. It is interesting to note that neither one of these carbines have any British proof marks. As to condition, they are complete, all original, untouched with overall soft brown patina in fine working order with strong bores, albeit some light powder residue in gun (A), which is to be expected in guns that were carried daily as prison guard duty guns that were hardly fired. Extremely fine consecutive numbered pair of untouched original 1873 carbines used at the infamous Australian prison in the latter part of the 19th century.Barrel Length: 20"Caliber/Bore: .44-40FFL Status: AntiqueManufacturer: WinchesterModel: 1873Paperwork: YesSerial Number: (A) 149677 (B) 149678

(A) Lovely Old "Best" Quality, Plain Finish, James Woodward Sidelock Ejector Heavy Game Gun with Ori

Lot # 224 (Sale Order: 222 of 545)

Chopper lump barrels of Whitworth Steel, are engraved "James Woodward & Sons 64 St. James's Street London. S. W." and with steel information on slightly raised concave game rib. Barrel flats are stamped with London black powder proofs. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with serial numbers and "WHITWORTH STEEL". Case hardened sidelock action features automatic safety (SAFE inlaid in gold, and covered by T-shaped extension of safety button), side clips, bushed strikers, gold band tumbler end cocking indicators inside classic Woodward "bug-eyed" pivots, as well as double triggers. Action is filed in "best" manner with nicely shaped beads and classic Woodward arcaded fences. This was undoubtedly built as a "best" gun, but apparently the customer was not a fan of extensive engraving, as this gun only has very well cut beaded borders. Pin heads are also engraved. "J. Woodward & Sons" is on each lockplate. Trigger guard is blued, and serial number is on tang which extends to horn grip cap. Well marbled and figured European walnut Prince of Wales grip buttstock measures 15-1/8" over 1-3/8" extension which appears to be fitted to original curve (stock measures 13-3/4" to end of original wood). Stock also features classic drop points, point pattern checkering at grip, and vacant silver oval. Matching splinter ejector forend has Anson release. Original makers leather case with stitched leather corners is lined in scarlet cloth, and has old paper Woodward label in lid. Case contains ebony and brass cleaning rod with long rod and short handle, broken case extractor, horn striker block, and some cleaning implements. Fine, original, as found. Barrels retain approximately 60-70% original blue, considerably silvered and thinned from normal hand wear, on sides, with numerous marks and small patches of roughness. Action retains 20-30% original case hardening color, strong where protected. Lockplates retain over 90% of their original color. Top lever and trigger guard retain most of their original bright blue finish. Stocks show considerable hand wear, with drop points wearing thin, and checkering considerably worn, and in some places almost smooth. Bores are excellent, bright and shiny, but with three or four small dents mostly on top of left barrel. Action is tight. Barrels are on face. Ejectors are strong and in time. Case leather is quite dark and rather soft. One strap and handle replaced, one strap missing. Interior cloth is fair. Label is good, considerably darkened and foxed, and has a rub-through. Cleaning rod is good. This is a very fine gun. Includes letter from Woodard & Sons.Accessories: caseBarrel Length: 30"Barrel Wall Thickness: (L) .033. (A) Cased Deluxe Factory Engraved Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Boxlock Shotgun with 2 Barrels (1894).

Lot # 225 (Sale Order: 223 of 545)

Colt's Model 1883 shotgun was one of the finest products manufactured in the firm's long history with a total of 7,360 manufactured. It was best quality all the way. The 1890 catalog stated this gun was made of the best materials and workmanship, and equal to the most costly and best English sporting gun. The parts are simple, strong and few in number. U.S. President Grover Cleveland received two of these guns in eight gauge. Features a hammerless boxlock action, standard ejectors, the finest Belgian made Damascus patterns finished in brown, deluxe walnut stocks, finely checkered, ebony forend tips, pistol grip cap, double set triggers, top safety, case colored frame (traces remain). Has two complete matching sets of barrels and forends, all numbered to gun. Complete engraving on frame and trigger guard in scroll pattern with duck on trigger guard and pointer and pheasants on right and left sides. Wood is excellent to near mint with original finish and nice checkering. Buttplate has been replaced with solid black plate that deserves a red English style rubber buttpad. Both forend stocks are excellent and features Deeley release. Both barrels have matted ribs, single bead and doll head lock. Mirror bores and tight as new lock-up. Gun was shipped on January 30th, 1897; one gun to Gibson & Woodworth. It is odd that the factory letter does not mention the 26" barrels, nor does it mention engraving. This is obviously a higher grade gun with presentation plaque on butt. These were expensive guns, even on their introduction, with engraving alone costing $125. Record of engraving found under Cuno Helfricht, Huge Reuss, and the Young Brothers. Both barrels are numbered "2" underneath, and an identical font is found on all serial numbers, with serifs. A similar style of tang engraving on 1883 listed as Helfricht can be found on page 355 of the "Colt Engraving" book, which shows the top tang area. Similar pointer and pheasant engraving is found on page 348, which shows the left panel and bottom frame of the H.S. Kearney gun; shows nearly identical patterns and patterns of scroll engraving at base, Serial No. 7654. The pattern of checkering is identical on both of the matching forearms. Barrels are dent-free and have a true ring, no signs of any solder repairs. We believe this to be Helfricht engraved based on the patterns and the quality of engraving. One of the most beautiful, deluxe 1883 Hammerless Colts we have seen. Comes in a monogrammed leather luggage case with brass buckles that needs a new handle a strap. Mirror bores and locks up tight as new. An extremely fine and rare Helfricht engraved complete two barrel cased set that with the addition of a proper English style red pad would be a show-stopper in any collection.Accessories: Case, Extra BarrelBarrel Length: (A) 28" (B) 26"Chamber : 2 - 5/8"Choke: Modified ImprovedFFL Status: AntiqueGauge: 12 BoreManufacturer: ColtModel: 1883 HammerlessPaperwork: YesSerial Number: 7370
