(A) EXCELLENT HELFRICHT ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY WITH STEERHEAD PEARL GRIPS, FEATURED IN "TH

Lot # 1157 (Sale Order: 76 of 301)

Per the included factory letter, this revolver shipped to George W. Shreve as a .45 Colt with a 4 - 3/4" barrel, nickel finish, unlisted stocks, and factory engraving on August 3rd, 1891, in a shipment of 1. Engraving is after Helfricht and certainly originated from him or his shop with acanthus scrollwork with parallel hatch shading on a punchdot background, with light linework and rocker engraving used to dress edges. Vignettes of Helfricht's geometrics and floral devices throughout, including shell motif on recoil shield and top of gripstrap. Colt address on top of barrel enclosed in wrigglework rocker engraving with accenting dotwork, with a spearpoint finial with shell motif pointing towards front sight. Cylinder has extremely unusual engraving at the gullets, alternating between a spray of acanthus and a starburst. Standard blade front sight and notch rear sight in top strap, decorated with rocker engraving and dotwork. Kidney-shaped ejector rod head, 2-line Colt information on top of barrel, caliber designation on left side of barrel, 2-line patent information on left side of frame, with encircled Rampant Colt behind. 1-piece pearl grips with a carved steerhead on right scale. This revolver is photographed on pg. 421 on "The Colt Engraving Book Volume I" by Wilson, detailing how Shreve was a grandson of a Revolutionary War veteran, participated in the Civil War in the C.S.A Army and was present at Lee's surrender at Appomattox, and worked for several firearms companies before opening a store in San Francisco, which was destroyed in 1906; at the time, it was attributed to the Brad Witherell collection. Included paperwork includes 2 Colt Factory letters addressed to Stan Shapiro, a Colt factory letter to Arnold "Arnie" Chernoff, internet printouts of Shreve, copies of the pages where this gun is featured in Colt Engraving, and a postcard from Witherell's featuring this revolver. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory nickel finish with some extremely minor marks and losses scattered throughout. Typical superficial scratches throughout from age and handling. Engraving is crisp throughout and well executed. Grips are excellent with some very minor losses at extremities, most noticeable on right side near frame, and a small crack on right side. Small parts with much nitre bluing, some heads rubbed to gunmetal grey. Mechanically fine, bore is excellent with strong rifling. An outstanding example with a notable list of previous owners. Barrel Length: 4 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork: Factory Letter, Information Serial Number: 142171

(C) ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER WITH PEARL GRIPS AND BOX, ENGRAVED TO JAMES H. SMITH ON BAC

Lot # 1158 (Sale Order: 77 of 301)

Per the included factory letter, this revolver shipped as a .38-40 with a 4 - 3/4" barrel, silver finish, carved pearls with a steer head, factory engraving with a special notation for "James H. Smith on backstrap", shipped to Simmons Hardware Company, St. Louis, Missouri, on July 6th, 1901, in a shipment of 1. Research indicates that James H. Smith was the chief of detectives in St. Louis, Missouri, the city he was born in. He held various odd jobs until he joined the police department in 1889. He was partnered with Samuel Allender, and the partners performed in several notable cases, including breaking up counterfeiters and day burglars. On June 7th, 1891, Smith was promoted to detective, where he handled famous cases such as the capture of Jacob Gilbert, Joseph Hardin, and J.B. Breeding. In 1899 he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Detectives. He resigned on January 19th, 1903, to go into mining, but returned in 1907 as a captain and was made Chief of Detectives 4 days later. During his stint as Chief of Detectives, he arrested Oscar Jackson, William Lowe, and George Ebeling. He left the force for good on June 1st, 1911 and went to work for Frisco as their chief special agent. The revolver is engraved in approximately C class coverage of rolling acanthus scroll on a punchdot background, with caliber encapsulated by a ribbon, strapwork, playful wrigglework rocker engraving on the ejector rod housing, and geometric motifs throughout. Clover motif at top of the backstrap, with "JAMES H. SMITH" down backstrap. The work is well cut and probably was done Cuno Helfricht or his shop. Right grip with carved steerhead, well executed, particularly considering the nature of pearl. Housed in a Colt maroon box numbered to a different gun. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. CONDITION: Overall excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory silver with some tarnishing in recess that could be cleaned should the new owner wish. Some surface level mossing. Serial number is double struck at the "8". Engraving is crisp and well cut. Some spotted patina on left side of frame. Grips have excellent fire, and the steerhead is excellent. Mechanically fine with all 4 Colt clicks, bore is very good with strong rifling and scattered oxidation; cylinder has a mild turn line. Box is good, solid and all present, with age related distress and some scrapes throughout. An excellent example. Accessories: Box Barrel Length: 4 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .38-40 FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork: Binder of Prov., Factory Letter Serial Number: 207286

(C) HISTORIC DOCUMENTED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER FACTORY ENGRAVED TO SHERIFF AND DEPUTY MARS

Lot # 1159 (Sale Order: 78 of 301)

Shipped May 2, 1899 as a single gun shipment to John Florer & Company, of Grey Horse (Indian Territory), Oklahoma with a 4 - 3/4" barrel, .45 Colt chambering, nickel finish, pearl grips, factory engraving, and a factory inscription reading "W.B. Jackson Grey Horse I.T." on the backstrap. William "Billy" B. Jackson was born in 1856 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He led his family West from Iowa, wintering at Cowskin Prairie, Missouri circa 1888, before making their journey via covered wagon to Oolagah and then in 1892 on to Gray Horse, Indian Territory, an Indian trading post supposedly frequented by the Dalton Gang. He was first appointed Indian Constable and then Deputy Sheriff of Pawnee County. In 1898, Jackson became United States Deputy Marshal of the Osage Reservation after his predecessor was murdered. He served until 1920, labeled as one of the "bravest men in Oklahoma" by a period newspaper. His service continued as City Marshal and then as Police Judge of Bigheart, Oklahoma, prior to his death in 1923. Although Jackson, by his own recollection, never shot a man in his Indian Territory peace keeping, he certainly went armed, very likely packing this circa 1899 Single Action inscribed to him. It remains in the configuration as shipped with full nickel finish and characteristic Helfricht style "C" class scroll engraving over punchdot backgrounds with floral devices and rocker linework. The 4 - 3/4" barrel is rolled on top with 2-line address and on the left with "45 COLT" designation. Crosspin frame stamped on the left with 2-line patent and encircled rampant Colt. Backstrap inscribed "W.B Jackson. Gray Horse. I.T." Grips are well-fitting, slim, 2-piece mother of pearl and appear original to the gun. Jackson's six-gun is accompanied by a period set of handcuffs, a reproduction 6-pointed star Deputy Marshal badge, and a circa 1906 to 1908 panel tooled laced edge single loop holster marked "W.D. BREWER / MAKER / MUSCOGEE. I.T.", as it was displayed at the NRA National Sporting Arms Museum in Springfield, Missouri from 2015 to 2020 and published thoroughly. A few of the numerous publications include page 91 of Graham, Kopec, and Moore's "A Study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver" and page 429 of Wilson's "The Colt Engraving Book" Volume I, as well as gracing the cover of issues of "Man at Arms" and the "Texas Gun Collector Association" periodicals. Copies of the periodicals are included with this lot. A large binder of research and provenance is also included, which consists of copies of period photos of Jackson and his family, numerous copied newspaper articles about Jackson and his service, archival references, Dick's research notes, various correspondence regarding this revolver, and a factory letter, as well as documentation from the NRA museum loan and museum display plaques. PROVENANCE: Purchased in Texas by Bob Elz in the 1970s and sold to Eric Vaule, who then sold the gun to Jonathan Peck. Dick Burdick purchased this centerpiece gun from Peck's collection at auction in 1995. CONDITION: Very good for its age. Revolver retains the majority of its original nickel with wear commensurate with use by an Indian Territory lawman. Markings are clean and legible. The left grip is as found with a large crack at the center and a small area of loss. Frosted bore displays defined rifling. Fine mechanics, all 4 hammer clicks retained. This is a truly superlative, well documented and well published, Western lawman owned factory engraved and factory inscribed Single Action. A very rare opportunity for the discerning collector to acquire the iconic, museum worthy "Grey Horse" gun, one of Dick Burdick's favorites. Accessories: Badge, cuffs Barrel Length: 4 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork: TGCA Magazine, Binder of Prov., Factory Letter Serial Number: 183373

(C) RARE AND HISTORIC SMOOTHBORE COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER REVOLVER OF EXHIBITION SHOOTER JOHN GARRE

Lot # 1160 (Sale Order: 79 of 301)

In his article from the Summer 2022 volume of "The Rampant Colt" entitled "One Favorite Colt", Dick Burdick best characterized John Garrett as "a man of many accomplishments". Garrett was born in December of 1865 in Pembroke, New York, later moving to Cedar Rapids and attending Iowa College. He moved to Colorado Springs in 1895 and became a centerpiece of the local area with his sporting goods store, which would be described in 1928 as "the most unique, novel, and attractive gun and sporting goods room in the West". John Witwer Garrett also hunted with the Theodore Roosevelt party at White River in northwest Colorado in 1901, set a trap shooting world record of clay targets at the Grand American Handicap Tournament of 1903 in Chicago, was an advertising advocate of the Winchester Arms Company, and even shot with Annie Oakley in championship events. This Colt Smoothbore Frontier Six Shooter single-action revolver was sent to Garrett on August 21, 1912. Only 15 Colt single-action revolvers would be manufactured with a smooth barrel in .44 caliber for the .44 Smoothbore cartridge. Additional features include 5 - 1/2" barrel with single line barrel address, blue finish, color case hardened frame, and checkered brown gutta percha grips featuring a Rampant Colt on either side in an oval. The blade front sight was likely modified by Garrett himself, with modification including filing and reshaping of the blade to make acquisition of moving clay and glass ball targets easier. Accompanying documentation is quite extensive, including Colt factory letter confirming configuration and shipment, an ATF exemption letter from 2003 stating that this revolver is exempt from NFA regulation, research and provenance regarding John Garrett, and a copy of the Rampant Colt article mentioned above. Accessories include 4 period glass target balls perfect for display. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. CONDITION: Excellent, with comfortably more than 90% original bluing remaining, with some scattered light handling marks throughout. Frame retains brilliant case colors. Grips are very good, with some fading and handling marks but no visible cracks. Action locks up tightly and retains all 4 hammer stops. Bore is lightly frosted with abrasion toward muzzle, consistent with being shot heavily during the period. Target balls are very good. An exciting opportunity to own an extremely rare Colt single action with a historic shipping destination to a man of many accomplishments. Accessories: Glass Target Balls Barrel Length: 5 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .44-40 Smoothbore FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork: Binder of Prov. Serial Number: 324477

Lot # 1164 (Sale Order: 83 of 301)

Unusual floating firing pin is installed in the frame and articulated by the hammer. The frame and trigger guard are gold washed with well-cut thin acanthus scroll with interspersed florals, on a shaded background. CONDITION: Very good, especially considering age. Frame has the majority, approximately 70-80%, original gilt with crisp engraving. Some losses and rubs from age, and some scattered flaking. Some raised oxidation on knuckle. Barrel with the vast majority of the bluing, approximately 90%, with areas of loss on bottom left flat, with superficial scratches throughout. J.B. FARR PRESENTATION 14K GOLD COLORADO SHERIFF BADGE.

Lot # 1180 (Sale Order: 99 of 301)

An exceptionally rare and very historic Colorado lawman's age from a tumultuous time at the end of the American Old West. This solid gold badge is jeweler-made and weighs in at 30.3 grams of tested 14K+ gold. This style badge is the pinnacle of presentation pieces made at the height of the Victorian era of craftsmanship and pride in work. Badge is highly detailed, elegant, and ornate. Features an eagle-topped federal shield with lettering executed in blue enamel on 3 chiseled-edge, silver banners reading: "J. B. FARR / SHERIFF / HUERFANO CO COLO". The scroll-topped shield has tassels on each side and the edge is finely detailed with fancy drop elements around the rope frame. Badge is hand engraved in script on the reverse:" From / J.D. Montez / M.A. Virgil / P. L. Sanchez / A.D. Valdez / New Year 1903" with a period correct T back style pin attachment. A newspaper clipping of the era states in regards to the presentation of the badge: "The sheriff is justly proud of his handsome pin." Farr was a prominent player in the region as a hired gun for the Republican Party and their agendas. He was also involved with the Ludlow Massacre, a mass killing perpetrated by anti-striker militia during the Colorado Coalfield War. Soldiers from the Colorado National Guard and private guards employed by Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (CF&I) attacked a tent colony of roughly 1,200 striking coal miners and their families in Ludlow, Colorado, on April 20, 1914. Approximately 21 people, including miners' wives and children, were killed. John D. Rockefeller Jr., a part-owner of CF&I who had recently appeared before a United States congressional hearing on the strikes, was widely blamed for having orchestrated the massacre. Author Anthony Roland DeStefanis writes in his 2004 dissertation on the subject, Soldier Strikebreakers on the Long Road to the Ludlow Massacre: "The sheriffs offices in both counties were crucial in maintaining Republican rule. In Huerfano County, Sheriff Jefferson Farr was the party's enforcer. Farr was a Texan who came to Colorado with his two brothers to become ranchers. The three brothers eventually became the biggest cattle dealers in southern Colorado. Farr's brother Edwin was elected Huerfano County's sheriff in the mid-1890s. In 1899, a group of train robbers that included former members of Black Jack Ketchum and Butch Cassidy's gangs held up a train just across the state line in the New Mexico territory. Posses raised in Walsenburg and Trinidad caught up with the robbers, and in the gunfight that followed, Edwin Farr was shot and killed. Jefferson took his brother's place as sheriff, and used the office to help expand his personal real estate holdings." A fantastic badge that crosses many collector categories, and would be the highlight of any collection. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. CONDITION: Very Good - Excellent. Only the slightest age commensurate period wear, mostly on the reverse.
