(C) AN EXTRAORDINARILY SCARCE DOCUMENTED SMITH & WESSON HAND EJECTOR MODEL 1917 TARGET VARIATION REV

Lot # 1210 (Sale Order: 129 of 301)

The 1917 was a revolver designed to shoot .45 ACP or .45 Auto Rim and was wildly popular during World War I, with approximately 175,000 revolvers produced and an additional 25,000 revolvers produced for Brazil via contract in 1937. Commercially, the gun was manufactured until 1948, and 210,000 were produced. Of that nearly 400,000 unit production history, only 5 are speculated to have been produced with the target variation with a pinned Patridge front sight on a raised base and a rear sight contoured into the notch. This example has both features, but the front sight appears to be a replacement. An included letter from Roy Jinks confirms that this gun shipped as a "Smith & Wesson .45 Hand Ejector Model of 1917, Post World War I, Rare Target Variation, caliber .45 ACP or .45 Auto Rim, revolver", serial number 172808, March 24th, 1921, and delivered to Hibbard, Spencer, Bartlett & Co., Chicago, Illinois, with 5 - 1/2" barrel, adjustable rear target sight, blue finish, butt swivel, and checkered walnut grips without medallions. S&W trademark on left side of frame, "S. & W. D.A. 45" on left side of barrel, serials on crane recess and butt, with a small "(Eagle head) / S2" also on crane recess. CONDITION: Metal retains the majority of the blue finish with some mild oxidation on front sight and a few small spots on left side of barrel. Barrel has plum browning coming through on both sides but still retains approximately 40-50% of the bluing. Frame has scattered handling marks, some silvering, and silvering to high edges and reciprocating areas. Hammer has approximately 15-20% case colors, balance brown. Grips are very good, with some minor handling marks and dings, but solid and free of cracks. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with strong lands and mild frosting. A very scarce revolver and virtually never seen with confirming documentation. Barrel Length: 5 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Smith & Wesson Model: 1917 Paperwork: Factory Letter Serial Number: 172808

(C) FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT MODEL 1903 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL, PICTURED IN BRUNNER AND IN "COLT AND ITS

Lot # 1227 (Sale Order: 146 of 301)

Per the Colt factory letter, this pistol shipped as a .32 ACP with blue finish and unlisted stocks to Supplee-Biddle Hardware Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on October 25th, 1915, in a shipment of 6. This pistol is photographed on pg. 68 of "The Colt Pocket Hammerless Automatic Pistols II" by Brunner as Fig. 82; Brunner notes that the engraving appears to be Helfricht's work, and further notes that while the factory shipping book does not make mention of the engraving, there is a notation in the Production Book that alludes to it. This gun was also featured in the spread of 7 1903s on the cover of the TGCA Fall 2017 magazine, and mentioned in the article "Three Old Single Action Collectors Admrie Another Model: Collecting the Colt Pocket Hammerless Automatic Pistol Models 1903-1908". The work certainly does appear to be the work of Helfricht, or in his style, with rolling open acanthus scroll on a punch dot background with geometrics used on dust cover, a shell motif at dust cover, and a floral device on slide chin; all well cut and tastefully executed. Grip scales are a richly fired mother of pearl, with deeply inset Colt medallions. Other features are as standard, with halfmoon front sight, U notch round top rear sight, typical patent and address rollmarks, VP and subinspect proofs, etc. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining the vast majority of the Colt factory bluing, with some silvering to high edges and muzzle consistent with age and use. Engraving is crisp and well cut. Some chocolate patina visible mixed with silvering areas and on bright areas such as hood. Grips are very good with some light cracks at escutcheon on right scale. Mechanically fine, bore with softened rifling and frosting throughout. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. Barrel Length: 3 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .32 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1903 Paperwork: Factory Letter, Information Serial Number: 190407
Per the Colt factory letter, this pistol shipped as a .32 ACP with blue finish and unlisted stocks to Supplee-Biddle Hardware Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Octo...moreber 25th, 1915, in a shipment of 6.

(C) PRE-WAR GOUGH ENGRAVED COLT 1911A1 SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL IN BOX (1925).

Lot # 1229 (Sale Order: 148 of 301)

Per the included factory letter, this pistol left the factory as a 5" .45 ACP with blued finish, factory engraving, a special 4 - 1/2# trigger pull, and was sent to William H. Hoegee Company, Los Angeles, California, on September 29th, 1925, in a shipment of 1 as Colt Factory Order 10355/1. The engraving is executed in approximately B-class coverage and is Gough's style of engraving with his preferred lined backgrounds and rolling vinework. Top of slide has particularly interesting acanthus scroll about the ejection port, and a floral device on chin. Other features include half moon front sight, square notch flat top rear sight, 2-line 1-block patent and address information on left side of slide, Colt caliber marking on right. Barrel with "S" in front of lug, frame with a faint "G" near disconnector hole. Left side of trigger guard with Colt's VP proof and "1" subinspector proof, right with "20" subinspector. Small parts comprise checkered spurred hammer, thick tab checkered safety, checkered slide release, short milled trigger, short grip safety, arched knurled mainspring housing with lanyard loop; many of the small parts are engraved en suite, including the reverse of the magazine release. 2-tone magazine. Grips are currently a pair of ivory steerhead grips, with relief steerhead on right side; right scale has writing on interior with a name and phone number along with a note that reads "wants to buy". Housed in an appropriate Colt maroon box for a Government model with Colt's Special Instructions booklet, but is numbered to a different gun. PROVENANCE: Richard "Dick" Burdick collection. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining the vast majority of the Colt factory bluing, with some distension about proofs from application of stamp. Silver areas are mixing with some light chocolate mossing. Legends are crisp; engraving is well-cut and attractive. Mechanically fine, bore with softened rifling and heavy frosting. Box with some age-related distress, including rubs at edges, but complete and intact. Accessories: Box Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: .45 ACP FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1911A1 Paperwork: Factory letter Serial Number: C144620
