He was present at Antietam, South Mountain, Battle of Fort Pulaski, and Chattanooga in various capacities. In 1863 he was made Brigadier General, and in 1864 he transferred from Engineers to Cavalry. He was originally Chief of the Cavalry Bureau, but was promoted to Brevet Major General in 1864, and commanded a division under Sheridan during the Overland Campaign and the Valley Campaigns of 1864. In 1864, Wilson crossed paths with Robert E. Lee, trying to choke him out of Petersburg by interrupting his supply lines. While the raid was successful, evading Rooney Lee who pursued them during the raid, during their retreat they were stopped at the Staunton by a Confederate fort, who bought Rooney enough time to arrive and route Wilson. Later in 1864, he trained Sherman's cavalry for the March to the Sea, but attached to the Army of the Cumberland for the Franklin-Nashville Campaign; it was during this time that he earned the distinction of being one of the only Union generals to successfully beat Nathan Bedford Forrest, forcing him to retreat from a flanking attack at the Battle of Franklin. He led Wilson's Raid through Alabama and Georgia, where he once again got the better of Forrest, and on Easter Day 1865, they captured Columbus, Georgia, amongst other cities. He received a full promotion to Major General in May, 1865, and his cavalrymen were the ones to capture Jefferson Davis that same month. After the war, he returned to civilian life as a railroad engineer and executive, but returned as a Major General in the Spanish American War, Brigadier General during the Boxer Rebellion, and represented Roosevelt at Edward VII's coronation. Housed in a black leather wrapped case with chamois lining, French fitted for gun while inserted in stock, a spare parts compartment with stripper clips, wiping rod, and seven wallets with button closures, six larger then one small. CONDITION: Very good, and retains virtually all of the factory bluing with scattered handling marks throughout, including some superficial scratching. A few small areas of silvering, most notable on barrel, with appropriate distension around proofs from application. In-the-white parts have some age related patina. Grips are very good with some typical handling marks. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with strong rifling and frosting throughout. Stock attaches firmly. Case and accessories are very good, with some age related distres throughout, and some scrapes through the black leather to base. This is an extremely attractive C96 with ties to an important U.S. General. Accessories: Case, Stock Barrel Length: 5 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: 7.63 Mauser FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Mauser Model: C96 Serial Number: 21158

Lot # 1239 (Sale Order: 158 of 301)

To aid the Nationalist overthrow of Spain, Germany formed the infamous Condor Legion comprised of approximately 5,000 troops from the Luftwaffe and Wehrmacht who served with Spanish Nationalist forces, practicing their tactics in prelude to World War II, perhaps most famously overtaking Guernica, home of Astra. Between 1937 and 1939, a total of 358 Astra Model 300 pistols were delivered to the Condor Legion, 158 of which were factory engraved and silver plated. This example is listed by serial number in L.M. Antaris' "Astra Automatic Pistols" as one of these pistols. Originally manufactured in 1935, it was pulled from commercial production on hand at the factory. Like other examples, it features full silver plating engraved with tight foliate scrolls. Slide shroud marked with large commercial Astra logo, standard Spanish proofs present on frame. Grips are 2-piece imitation mother of pearl with polychrome Astra logos. Complete with 2 silver-plated magazines and a brown leather German flap holster with white stitching. CONDITION: Very good overall. (C) CASED DWM MODEL 1902 LUGER SEMI AUTOMATIC CARBINE RETAILER MARKED FOR BUENOS AIRES.

Lot # 1240 (Sale Order: 159 of 301)

Retailer marked 1902 Luger Carbine. The barrel is marked "J. CANEDO / 611 RIVADAVIA, 611 BS.AIRES" This gun has the 3-position rear sight and a ramp front sight. Dished toggle with a grip safety. 2-piece checkered wood grips with a checkered panel for stock and a detachable rear stock with a horn butplate and sling swivels. It comes in a unique fold out leather case. Inside the case is an extra magazine, sling, oil bottle and cleaning rod. The case has a presentation plaque that reads "CORONEL / CARLOS SARMIENTO / RECUERDO DE M. VIDELA / 1909". Carlos Sarmiento was a significant Argentinian politician at the turn of the century. He graduated from the National Military College in 1880 as an artillery officer, and made colonel, serving as a professor at the Military College, the head of the Coastal Artillery Regiment, the head of the Third Artillery Regiment, and as a secretary to Luis Maria Campos, the Minister of War. He was involved in the fraudulent sale of land in the Chacabuco District of Buenos Aires, and, when exposed by Lucio Vicente Lopez, a reporter who was, incidentally, also the grandson of the man who wrote the Argentinian National Anthem, Sarmiento challenged Lopez to a duel, where he killed him, shooting Lopez in the abdomen; Sarmiento was not charged after a brief investigation. He retired from military life in 1905 in favor of politics, founding the Popular Party, and, in 1907, led a revolution against Governor Manuel Jose Godoy, which proved successful, with 16 men dead at the end. The Federal government, however, intervened, and Dr. Cornelio Moyano Gacitua stepped in and held an election, where Sarmiento was elected as a national senator, and, in 1908, officially elected governor. Sarmiento is regarded as a progressive, as he built public spaces such as the Parque de Mayo and the Palace of Courts, and completed a complete census of the population. CONDITION: This gun has been professionally restored at some point. But it was done a long time ago. The gun retains the majority of the reapplied blue finish along with the straw small parts. There is a small spot of pitting on the barrel just behind the front sight. There is high edge wear. The wood stocks and grips have been cleaned up. Bright and shiny bore with sharp lands and grooves. Barrel Length: 11 - 3/4" Caliber/Bore: .30 Luger FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: DWM Model: 1902 Carbine Serial Number: 24706

Right side with "COLT AUTOMATIC / CALIBRE 45" centered under the ejection port. Barrel has the mixed coarse polishing visible through ejection port and high polish balance. Frame with S and R stamped at top of frame near disconnector hole, serial number on left side of dust cover, VP proof on left side of trigger guard, "K" subinspector proof on left side of trigger guard, and "GOVERNMENT MODEL" on right side of dust cover. Small parts comprise with long milled trigger, milled relief cut slide release, thin tab milled relief cut thumb safety, spurred checkered hammer, short grip safety, smooth flat mainspring housing with lanyard loop, and checkered diamond walnut grips. 2-tone magazine with lanyard loop. CONDITION: Slide retains the vast majority of the Colt high polish bluing with some silvering to high edges and towards muzzle consistent with holster wear.
