(C) VERY RARE PROTOTYPE STEEL STOCKED INLAND/NATIONAL POSTAL METER TOOL ROOM M1 CARBINE.

Lot # 1284 (Sale Order: 152 of 519)

Assembled by Larry Ruth with an assortment of scarce parts, this carbine is built on what appears to be an early National Postal Meter tool room receiver provided by Inland to NPM as they started production, as is designated by a small "P" on the receiver ring as well as its lack of a serial number. Import marked "12-42" dated Rock-Ola barrel with milled front sight and adjustable rear sight. Flat bolt. Mixed internals with a flip safety and "CC / M" magazine catch. Commercial perforated aluminum hand guard retained by a type 2 band. Most importantly this carbine features an extremely rare prototype all steel stock. A shortage of suitable walnut for gunstocks during the Korean War forced Springfield Armory to seek alternatives, including testing 4 steel carbine stocks in 1952. Likely fabricated by the Higgins Pressed Steel Company, this prototype was discovered by Larry, along with a prototype M2 stock at a Pasadena gun shop in the 1970s. Constructed of stamped 20-gauge soft stamped steel, it features an integral front band spring, oiler clip, rear sling bar, and welded butt plate. The assembled carbine is featured on page 1285 of Ruth's "War Baby III", the stock also pictured on 1096 and 1284. CONDITION: Good as assembled. Barrel has largely faded to patina, the receiver retaining the majority of its original finish with some expected wear. Stock displays an honest blended brown patina. Very good bright bore. ME of 4. Fine mechanics. A very interesting carbine featuring one of only 2 known existing all steel prototype stocks. PROVENANCE: Larry Ruth Collection Barrel Length: 18" Caliber/Bore: .30 Carbine FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Inland Model: M1 Carbine Paperwork: COA Serial Number: NSN

(C) DOCUMENTED COMMERCIAL CONTROLS CORP. PRESENTATION NATIONAL POSTAL METER M1 CARBINE.

Lot # 1286 (Sale Order: 154 of 519)

After exceeding production requirements for the M1 Carbine, National Postal Meter ceased production May 1, 1944. They had changed their name to Commercial Controls Corporation a few days prior. Although Commercial Controls never produced any carbines, they did dispose of 239 or so guns which remained on hand including this example. An included original July 1946 letter on Commercial Controls letterhead releases this carbine to Erich Liebich, a toolmaker for National Postal Meter. An included 1992 dated letter confirms this and notes that Larry Ruth obtained the carbine directly from Liebich’s son, who was also employed by Commercial Controls. The carbine was never manufacturer marked or serial numbered. It is finished in full blue. Fitted with a "4-43" dated Underwood barrel absent proof marks. "N" marked milled front sight and un-staked "I.R. CO." adjustable rear sight. Early flat bolt, pushbutton safety, and flat magazine catch. "HN" dogleg hammer. Walnut high-wood stock is marked in the cut "TRIMBLE / TN" and has a 2-rivet hand-guard retained by a "UN" type 1 flat band. Includes an original green wartime chamber safety flag. Uncommon "S-N" ink stamped c-tip sling. The carbine is pictured on page 1195 of Larry Ruth's "War Baby III". CONDITION: Excellent. Nearly all of the original blue is retained throughout with only light wear. Stock has some scattered dings but rates very fine. Crisp bore. Fine mechanics. A fantastic and documented WWII presentation carbine. PROVENANCE: Larry Ruth Collection Barrel Length: 18" Caliber/Bore: .30 Carbine FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: National Postal Meter Model: M1 Carbine Paperwork: Provenance, COA Serial Number: NSN

LOT OF 3: HISTORIC GARAND LIGHT RIFLE TECHNICAL DRAWING AND PROTOTYPE PARTS FROM THE PERSONAL COLLEC

Lot # 1287 (Sale Order: 155 of 519)

There is perhaps no firearms designer so synonymous with World War II than John Garand, whose M1 Garand rifle was fielded en masse by American forces and contributed greatly to Allied victory. His genius continued into the American light rifle trials in 1941, developing 2 generations of innovative prototypes for Springfield Armory. Garand's two designs were not selected. This lot includes several important relics from Garand's trial carbines, the first are parts from the light rifle prototype: a crinkle painted butt plate and the parkerized rear sight aperture. Lot also includes an original technical drawing of the second prototype carbine cut away from the side view to display the internals. Drawing is unsigned but does appear to be an original draft. Measures approximately 24 - 1/2" x 42". Drawing and parts were obtained from the estate of John Garand after his passing and are documented by included 2003 dated certificates of authenticity signed by Richard Garand and Scott Duff. Photocopies of the light rifle patents as well as a photograph of John Garand are also included. CONDITION: Good. Drawing has an overall cream color with areas of discoloration and staining, as well as a few minor perforations and edgewear. Butt plate retains nearly all of its painted black crinkle finish with a few minor oxidation spots. Sight is likewise fine. An outstanding opportunity to acquire tangible remnants of John Garand's design genius that would make a very attractive display. PROVENANCE: Larry Ruth Collection Paperwork: COAs, Info

Polished blue frame with solid recoil shield and folding trigger. The 1-piece smooth varnished walnut grips are flared at the base and numbered to the gun. Revolver is housed in a correct beveled lid varnished mahogany presentation case lined in brown crushed velvet and complete with original accountments. A matching spare cylinder is secured by a dowel in the upper right corner. To the left of the revolver, retained by iron mounts, are an iron single cavity round ball mold with 3 walnut handles, Paterson combination tool (screwdriver, ball starter, nipple wrench, and pick), and threaded wiping rod with turned walnut handle. The first pattern bass capper is embossed around the lid edge "COLT'S PATENT / PATENT ARMS M(?)NG CO PATERSON. N.J." between rings with a central rampant Colt motif and a pair of crossed Paterson revolvers. Complete with a correct 5 - 1/2" long No. 3 cylinder charger, with gold plated knurled bands at each end and a central band marked in script "Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson N.J. - Colt's Pt.". Importantly, this cased set features an inlaid presentation plaque on the lid, inscribed in fine script "W. Watson / from A. P.". Inscription is well executed and appears original. It compares favorably with another known cased presentation, No. 3 serial number 24, which appears to be done in the same hand. "W. Watson" is widely attributed to William Watson, a New York City attorney who is documented as representing Samuel Colt in disputes with Patent Arms Mfg. Co. treasurer and majority shareholder John Ehlers. By 1841, the fledgling company was financially insecure and Samuel Colt likewise, requesting personal funds from Ehlers to continue trying to secure a government contract in Washington DC. Although the New Jersey contract for 100 carbines was eventually secured, the funds needed for Colt's rent were not. William Watson was authorized to collect this sum of $100, with Samuel Colt advising that he bring a witness along as Ehlers "may turn out a rogue". Further research suggests the "A.P." who presented this revolver to Watson is Andrew Parsons, a minority shareholder in the P. A. Mfg. Co., owning 10 shares of the company as is recorded on an August 1837 list. Parsons was an influential New Jersey politician who represented Passaic County, home of Colt's Paterson factory, in the Upper House of the New Jersey Legislature. He served back to back terms as Vice President of the Council of the New Jersey Legislature in 1837 and 1838, next in line to fill a vacancy in the Governor's mansion. Although Parsons and Watson are both associated with Colt, the exact reason for the presentation of this revolver is unknown. In an included 25-page letter by R.L. Wilson detailing this gun, it is speculated Parsons may have presented the gun to Watson on behalf of Colt, perhaps as payment or to secure loyalty. Presentation revolvers remained an important part of Colt's marketing into the Hartford years and, at the time, Ehler's was cracking down on trials and loan guns due to the company's financial woes. Or perhaps, Parson, being a stockholder, may have presented the gun in appreciation of Watson's assistance to Colt in moving the company in a direction he found favorable. PROVENANCE: From the personal and advanced collection of Dr. Jim Watson of Scottsdale, Arizona. CONDITION: Very fine overall. Significant portions of original blue are retained on the barrel, largely drifting to pleasing brown patina. Both cylinders show evidence of use with some fulminate pitting on the rear faces and nipples. Cylinder scenes remain strong and largely legible. Frame and grip straps display approximately 60% bright blue. Some light pitting present on the recoil shield, with heavier pitting present on the hammer channel and sides of the hammer covered by the recoil shield when uncocked. Grip is fine, the left side retaining approximately 90% original finish. Right side retains approximately 50% varnish, having sat in contact with the case liner for 180 years. Bore is dark with strong, well-defined rifling. Mechanics are crisp. Matching numbers present on the barrel
Numbered in the same range, only approximately 850 No. 2 and No. 3 Belt Model revolvers are believed to have been manufactured by Samuel Colt's Patent Arms Manufacturing ...moreCo. of Paterson, New Jersey, circa 1837 to 1840. This particularly extraordinary specimen of a No. 3 is accompanied by an extremely scarce, original, presentation case and accoutrements. The blued 5 - 1/2" octagon barrel is roll stamped on the top flat "Patent Arms M'g Co Paterson N-J Colt's Pt" between a pair of small bowtie motifs. .31 caliber bore with 11 groove rifling. Front sight is a small German silver blade. Hammer notch rear sight. The 5-shot rounded shoulder cylinder displays a crisp and largely legible rolled cylinder scene featuring the "COLT" horse head trademark, as well as a pair of centaurs armed with a Colt rifle and revolvers engaged in combat with horsemen and foot soldiers. Polished blue frame with solid recoil shield and folding trigger. The 1-piece smooth varnished walnut grips are flared at the base and numbered to the gun. (A) VERY RARE CASED CONSECUTIVE PAIR OF MARTIAL COLT 1860 ARMY REVOLVERS WITH MATCHING CANTEEN STOCK

Lot # 1294 (Sale Order: 162 of 519)

According to the factory letter, serial number 22503 was part of a 1000 gun shipment to the War Department and shipped to Captain Crispin at #55 White Street in NYC on March 1, 1862. During the Civil War Colonel Crispin served for some time on the staff of Major-General George B. McClellan, and was also in charge of the New York Ordnance. He was promoted to captain of ordnance, 3 August 1861, and in that grade served through the civil war. We must assume that number 22502 was part of that 1000 gun shipment. As head of ordnance, he had access to any guns he wanted. Both are early four screw models, cut for stock with brass trigger guards, iron strap, one piece walnut grips, fluted cylinder with roll engraved Naval battle scene. Both have the one line barrel legend with COLT'S PATENT on left side of frame. Number 22502 has all matching numbers including the wedge. The left grip panel has a visible but legible cartouche. You will find the martial inspector marks as follows; C-on left barrel, L-on right barrel, B-L on cylinder, T-top back strap. CONDITION: No original finish, now a smooth brown patina. All legends are sound. The Naval scene is partially visible. Safety pins are flat. Brass has turned almost black. Grips show some dings but are a nice fit with minor front toe chip on both sides. Action indexes correctly with strong half cock. Very nice homogenous gun. Gun number 22503 has all matching numbers to include the post. This gun has .44 CAL on left side rear trigger guard. The only inspector stamps are the letter "O near serial number on barrel, frame and trigger guard. No visible cartouche on left grip. It is in nearly identical condition with strong legends but the spring is missing from wedge and the Naval scene is barely visible. The grips have less empty space at toes. It too has a fine action with strong half cock. Bores on both guns are strong but have residue. The bottom of the canteen stock has both numbers in the same font. All the hardware is brass. There is an iron saddle ring at base. The vise is iron. The canteen stock is walnut with iron cap and small chain. The top of the stock has a crack running the length as well as one on the base. The brass butt plate also has the same two number stamps and similar fonts. There is a visible cartouche on left side but not legible. Aside from crack, the stock has very few impressions. The brass has turned as dark as that found on revolvers. The two cavity .44 bullet mold is stamped Colt's Patent. An original brass powder flask with staff of arms is stamped COLT'S PATENT. The period wood display case is lined in faded and stained blue felt and comes with a 6 round envelop of 44-100 cartridges and a vintage Eley Bros Colt's Pistol cap partially full tin. We must assume that these guns came together in the same shipment but only one was designated to Crispin. Did he acquire the other and then cased them? The guns themselves have quite a few differences based on who inspected and stamped them. Comes with factory letter on gun number 22503 only. (A) HISTORIC DOCUMENTED FACTORY ENGRAVED COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER FROM THE 1876 CENTENNIAL E

Lot # 1306 (Sale Order: 174 of 519)

Newly discovered and highly desirable. Manufactured in 1874 and displayed on the wheel of Colts display at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was one of Colt's finest show displays, with over 300 fine and highly engraved guns. This is one of the 18 centerpiece Colt Single Action Armies that are in the center wheel of this display. There are photos of the wheel display in several books, here are just a few: "Colt An American Legend" by R.L. Wilson, pg. 172; "The Colt Heritage" by R.L. Wilson pg. 172; "The Colt Engraving Book: Volume One" by R.L. Wilson on pg. 388. Exquisitely factory engraved with ivory grip and nickel and gold finish. It is listed by serial number, 13439, at the top of the Henry Folsom list. The Folsom list is a document dated October 15th, 1877, and is a detailed list of some of the firearms used in the 1876 Centennial Exposition wheel display. All were returned to Colt Fire Arms Company by H.D. Folsom after the 1876 Exposition and are listed by description and serial number. Line 1 serial #11086, 1 gun "Colt Army 45 Cal Ivory Nickel Eng. Gold" Line #2 denotes 6 additional guns, same configuration by serial number. This gun's serial number is fourth in line and center. According to the Colt Factory letter, this gun is a .45 Long Colt with a 5 - 1/2" barrel, nickel finish, ivory stocks, factory engraved, and was shipped to E. C. Meacham Arms Company, St. Louis, Missouri, on November 7th, 1887, in a shipment of 1 gun. The remarks section of the Colt latter states "The records contain a previous listing for this serial number. The gun was originally a .45/C with a 7 - 1/2" barrel, nickel & gold finish, ivory stocks, and factory engraved. It was included in a shipment of 6 guns to Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis Missouri on August 28, 1884. It was returned to the factory on November 1, 1884, where subsequent changes to the configuration of the revolver were made.". This confirms that the barrel was shortened at the Colt factory. CONDITION: At some point in the life of this revolver, it was poorly stored and had been wet. But, all of the factory original engraving is visible and clear to the eye. There is no finish left on this gun and it has scattered pitting across the entire outside of the gun. The front sight shows has been taken down a little bit. 1-piece ivory grip shows lots of grain and has a nice mellowed patina. The gun locks up tight and indexes fine. All factory markings are original and clearly readable, barrel and cylinder are factory numbered and ejector housing is the original period correct "first type" housing with the stud. Bore is dark with some pitting and frosting in the lands and grooves. A very rare gun that is 1 of 18 single actions used on the Colt Display. Barrel Length: 5 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt Manufacturer: Colt Model: SAA Paperwork: Factory Letter, Copies of Shipping Ledger, ETC Serial Number: 13439
