SOVIET AGS-17 PLAYMA GRENADE LAUNCHER PARTS KIT.

Lot # 1014 (Sale Order: 3 of 345)

These are the parts, less the center portion of the receiver, for the Soviet (and now Russian) AGS-17 Playma automatic grenade launcher. It includes the rare 29 round drum as part of this lot. This particular specimen was manufactured in 1989, and, as you can see, saw some significant service until finding its way to the shores of the United States. The center section of the receiver is missing, but otherwise the barrel, bolt, feed tray, top cover, mainspring, two cartridge elevators, trigger bar, and back plate present as well as the trigger actuator mechanism. If one was a licensed manufacturer, it would be possible to work these parts up into a Post-86 dealer sample. The presence of the required drum for this piece makes this an even more attractive possibility. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is very good overall with most of the original finis gone leaving a gray and brown patina. Bore of the intact barrel is extremely fine. Bolt face extremely fine. The springs are intact and serviceable. Handles at backplate also in good serviceable condition. This is an almost unique opportunity for the licensed manufacturer to acquire the parts to make the Soviet Union’s, and now Russia’s, answer to our own automatic grenade launcher. This cataloger does not ever expect to see another of these as complete and with serviceable parts. JWK 2025-05-062.

ADDENDUM: Please note there is only one action spring assembly included with this kit. The action spring assembly is intact and serviceable.

LATE 1943 HITACHI MANUFACTURED JAPANESE TYPE 99 MACHINE GUN PARTS KIT.

Lot # 1117 (Sale Order: 10 of 345)

This was at one time no doubt a G.I.’s souvenir bring-back war trophy. There is evidence of a bullet strike at the bottom on the wood stock. Unfortunately, although it made its way back to the United States pretty much complete, matching, and intact without magazine, it underwent poor storage and neglect, and was obviously never registered for private ownership. Receiver has been cut and a significant piece of the center section is not present. However, once one looks past the significant scale and brown corrosion there are some desirable parts here. All appear to be original as brought back. Bipod, flash hider, gas regulator, operating rod, matching barrel with dark unaltered chamber, with grimy yet serviceable bore, buffer, mainspring, charging handle (no cover), ejector with cover, rear sight parts, magazine cover and ejection port cover, serviceable matching bolt with extractor and bolt lock, lower assembly W/O provision for monopod with sear safety bar and spring, but without trigger return spring present. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is poor to fair with significant brown scale, but key components such as the bolt, gas regulator, and if the chamber is able to be cleaned the bore is actually quite good. Wood buttstock, handgrip and carrying handle also are quite fine and serviceable. There is a lot of potential for these parts if one has the patience and persistence to properly clean them up. JWK 2025-05-076.

(A) EXTRAORDINARY BRITISH 19TH CENTURY CRANK FIRED RIFLE IN .50 MORSE WITH POSSIBLE CONFEDERATE CONN

Lot # 1121 (Sale Order: 14 of 345)

This very unusual and unique crank-fired rifle could accurately be called the pre-cursor to the crank-fired guns such as the Gatling and Hotchkiss, as well as the later designs such as the Nordenfelt and Gardner guns. This gun utilizes a detachable hand-crank to actuate a bolt which strips cartridges from a gravity-fed box magazine which drops the rounds into the feedway in the same manner as a Gatling Gun. The action is contained between two steel sideplates, and the massive wood stock is attached like a clamshell around the outside of these plates. There are four contemporary produced magazines included with this lot. There is also an adjustable wood-legged tripod with a contemporary produced head designed to hold this rifle as it is being fired. A crew of three is ideal for the firing of this weapon, which can be seen in a posted YouTube video. The bore of this rifle measures .585 inch and it has 3-groove left hand rifling. There is a crown proof mark over “16” on he ladder of the rear sight, which is graduated out to “8”. This rifle was brought to the attention of both Dolf Goldsmith, and Herbert Woodend years ago, and both of these renown researchers were very interested in it, and its origins. The rifle was disassembled, detailed photos taken and forwarded to first to Dolf, and then on to Herb Woodend. Herbert Woodend was long associated and curator at the Royal Small Arms Factory Pattern Room at Enfield north of London, and a top authority on British Small arms. Herb requested an X-ray of the barrel so that he could determine whether it was purpose-made as it is, or was a cut-down barrel. The consignor acquired and provided the X-rays, and Herbert Woodend declared the barrel to be a one-off manufactured at Enfield, and there is an Enfield Inspector’s stamp on it. Before Herb Woodend could follow-up in his research of the Enfield records, his health declined and prevented him from doing so. Dolf Goldsmith’s energy for travel and research had declined by this time as well. A chamber casting has been taken, and it is for the .58 Morse cartridge. It will also digest the .577 steel base paper cartridge round. Dolf Goldsmith was of the opinion that the design of this gun provided inspiration to Hiram Maxim and John Browning. The consignor states that he has fired over 100 rounds of .58 Morse, and over 100 rounds of .577 Snider out of this rifle. He had the magazines fabricated following the suggestions made by Dolf Goldsmith, and other gun experts. The consignor also had the tripod yoke and crank handle fabricated. He states that the gun is 100% original and has had nothing replaced or refinished except for stabilizing the 4” jagged crack on the left side of the stock. PROVENANCE: Letter from consignor in which he states that he purchased this gun from a dealer at the Denver gun collector’s show in the mid 1980s. The dealer had no information but put the consignor in touch with the person he had acquired it from in Florida. This prior owner in Florida stated he had purchased it in the mid-1950s from a small museum in Canada, which was closing and deaccessing/auctioning off all their assets. This Florida owner said there was a small plaque (now lost) which stated this was a “Confederate Gun for Bridge Defense”, and that was all that he knew about it. This Florida owner sold the gun in order to pay medical bills. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is extremely fine overall. Beautiful brass shroud over the steel barrel. Massive wood stock has beautiful figure but also a 4” jagged crack on the left side. This does not appear to have affected function. Bore is fine, starting to get dark, with strong rifling. The tripod and crank handle are near excellent. Whether you accept the possibility that this rifle has some connection to the Confederate States of America or not, this rifle is still a remarkable piece regarding its design and place in historical development of repeating arms. One cannot overstate the potential significance, nor ignore the effort and quality of design and manufacture of this specimen from the 19th century. JWK 2025-05-086. Accessories: Tripod, Crank, Magazines, Brass Deflector Barrel Length: 30" Caliber/Bore: .50 Morse FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: England Model: Crank Fired Rifle Paperwork: Letter from Consignor Serial Number: NSN

CORRECTION: According to the consignor’s notes regarding communication with both Dolf Goldsmith and Herb Woodend about this gun, they both agreed that this was the first gun either had observed that used a trunnion and sideplates in its construction. From a developmental standpoint this is a significant fact, and one that needs to have attention brought to it. It is one of the major reason that both were so interested in it. It is a shame that Woodend’s declining health prevented his completing his research on this gun. Additionally, this rifle is in .58 Morse, not .50 Morse as previously stated.

(C) CESKA ZBROJOVKA SS 41 ANTI TANK RIFLE.

Lot # 1122 (Sale Order: 15 of 345)

Extraordinarily rare M.SS.41 anti-tank rifle as used by the Waffen SS in WWII. These anti-tank rifles were developed specifically to use the German PzB 39 7.92 x 94 mm Patr. .318 cartridge by CZ from a pre-War 15mm design (for the 15x104 mm ZB vz. 60 MG cartridge) devised for the Czech Army. One original round of ammunition is included with this gun. The M.SS.41 rifles were made during German occupation of Czechoslovakia at the Waffen Werke Brunn (Brno) facility specifically for SS formations. The M.SS.41 is one of the first small arm bullpup designs used in any major conflict. The unique action employs a forward moving barrel, operated by turning the trigger/handgrip group, with fixed standing breech having massive multi-tooth interrupted thread closure behind the magazine. Only about 3,000 are known to have been made, with probably only about a dozen surviving examples known. Left receiver is marked with the "Z" within rifle barrel trademark of Ceska Zbrojovka as well as a very prominent and orig "M.SS 41", a Nazi eagle/swastika firing proof, and the "SS" acceptance mark, a National Socialist Eagle over "SSZZA2" (SS Zentralzeugamt 2). The rifle retains its original magazine, sights, and bipod (derived from the ZB vz. 26/BREN pattern). All exterior parts appear to match the SN of the gun. No carrying handle present. Leather cover and pad not present at butt. PROVENANCE: From the personal collection of noted firearms manufacturer and enthusiast William “Bill” (Happiness is a warm machine gun) Fleming. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish a dark refinish over light pitting on exterior surfaces. Markings are very discernible. Magazine finish is consistent with the rest of this arm. Bore and chamber are near excellent, shiny and bright. Bolt face is near excellent. Locking lugs are also extremely clean. Wooden handgrip has a repaired crack with a running down the right side to a “V” towards the back with a small chip out of it. Mechanism provides a crisp and satisfying “click” when dry fired. This rifle has every indication of having been in use out in the weather, but cared for with preservative oil is the critical internal and operating parts. Wish it could talk! These rifles are extremely sought after within the WWII collecting community, and this specimen would be a great candidate for making a new barrel for recreational shooting. Note that there is a 2nd magazine for this rifle being offered as a separate lot in this auction. JWK 2025-05-084. (C) FINE AND RARE WWII DEUTSCHE-INDUSTRIE-WERKE VG2 VOLKSSTURMGEWEHR RIFLE WITH VOLKSSTURM UNIFORM G

Lot # 1128 (Sale Order: 21 of 345)

As allied forces pushed and broke through into Germany in the fall of 1944 it became clear desperate measures needed to be taken to defend Germany, including the establishment of a home guard comprised of those too old or otherwise unfit for standard military service. On September 25, Hitler announced the formation of the Volkssturm or "peoples assault". It was determined several million rifles and pistols would be needed to arm the irregular troops, a daunting task for the crumbling Reich and a number of simplified "last ditch" weapons were developed. The Walther Volksgewehr, the VG1, was initially selected in December 1944 although despite its simple design was eventually determined to be too difficult to produce by some. The VG2 designed by Deutsche-Industrie-Werke AG of Berlin was also approved for limited production and issue in January of 1945. This rather early example is marked on the right side of the receiver with a partial chd ordnance code for Deutsche-Industrie-Werke as well as a boxed "56", possibly an acceptance stamp. As is correct on these early guns there is no VG2 designation stamp. The receiver is constructed of blued steel stamped and welded in place. The simplified bolt action with matching numbered bolt feeds from detachable K.43 magazines, this example with ordnance manufacturer code "aye". The blued 1941 dated "cky" Krupp code Luftwaffe machine gun barrel is correctly counterbored and turned down at the muzzle to accept a grenade launcher. Blade front sight with pinned sheet steel hood. 2-piece drift adjustable u-notch rear sight. Plain 2-piece wood stocks with cupped butt plate. Rifle is currently fitted with an original "L&F" marked leather sling. PROVENANCE: Ex Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess Collection. This example is also pictured and described on page 178 of "Desperate Measures" by W. Darrin Weaver. This fine Volksturmgewher is accompanied by a Volkssturm uniform and accouterments. The Volkssturm Gewehr Tunic belonged former Feldwebel Klaus Edenbacher of the 246th Inf Division. During late 1943 Feldwebel Edenbacher was wounded during the fighting outside and around the Kiev Region and sent to a military hospital for the majority of 1944. Following the formation of the Volkssturm he was assigned as a Zugführer and an instructor. During his time with the Wermacht and 246th Infantry he was awarded the Iron Cross Second Class, Infantry Assault Badge, Black and Silver Wound Badges, and the Combat Clasp in Bronze. The Tunic is the only piece attributed to Klaus Edenbacher directly and exhibits Zugfuhrer rank insignia. The remainder of this set includes all original military issue components including M40 Field Trousers, Jackboots with the original soles and hobnailing, M43 Heer Field Cap (stamped “54” with faint maker stamping), M31 Mess Kit, M31 Breadbag, M31 Canteen, 2 G43 Magazine Pouches, WWII Issued German Wermacht Belt Buckle and Belt, Volkssturm Armband, Iron Cross Second Class, Infantry Assault Badge, Black and Silver Wound Badges (Silver is marked “L/13” for Meybauer), and Combat Clasp in Bronze. The uniform set was assembled by Archival Arms, and the Iron Cross has a small scanned piece of newspaper with it attributing it to Ernst Albat. CONDITION: Fine. Barrel retains nearly all of its original blue with scattered marks. Receiver likewise retains approximately 90% blue with some high edge wear and older oxidation spotting, especially on the left side. Stocks have a few impressions and a small 1/2" hairline split on the forend, but are otherwise very fine. Crisp, bright bore. Fine mechanics. The various pieces of uniform and insignia exhibit scattered blemishes and patina. An outstanding example of a very scarce and desirable last ditch World War II German rifle offered here with a great Volkssturm uniform grouping to display with it. Accessories: Uniform and Accessories Barrel Length: 22" Caliber/Bore: 8mm Mauser FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Deutsche Industrie Werk AG Model: VG2 Serial Number: 7797

(C) VERY RARE AND HIGHLY DESIRABLE JAPANESE TYPE 5 GARAND SEMI-AUTOMATIC RIFLE SERIAL NUMBER 13 WITH

Lot # 1129 (Sale Order: 22 of 345)

Much like the United States and other powers, Japan began experimenting with semi-automatic rifles in the interwar period to replace or supplement their bolt action arms. Japanese firms and arsenals produced several prototype autoloaders based on the American Pederson toggle lock rifle and Czech ZH-29. Put on hold with the outbreak of war with China in 1937, Japanese production of bolt action rifles continued through World War II. By 1936, the US had already adopted the semi-automatic M1 Garand as its standard battle rifle, seeing service in the Pacific as well as Europe. Somewhat under gunned, the Japanese reopened experimentation mid-War and among other options explored a domestic produced adaptation of the American Garand in standard Japanese 7.7mm chambering. Known as the Type 5, approximately 125 were assembled beginning in 1944. This outstanding, experimental example is numbered "13" on the underside of the barrel. Arsenal applied matte black finish throughout. Front sight is an Arisaka style protected blade. Rear tangent sight graduated to 1200 meters with a very fine peep aperture. Action operates nearly identically to a standard American Garand although the 8-round enbloc clip is replaced with a fixed internal 10-round magazine which extends past the woodline. Receiver is equipped with a stripper clip guide to make loading more efficient. Stock is of WWII Japanese form with red lacquer finish, forend finger groove, steel tang straps, sling swivels, and a cupped butt plate. This example is accompanied by an original March 14, 1946 dated capture certificate listing "ONE JAPANESE RIFLE" as the possession of Colonel Walter D. Buie, as well as a period shipping crate addressed to Major Walter Buie at Fort Leavenworth and also his wife in North Carolina. Born in Georgia in 1900, Buie graduated from West Point in 1920. He commanded the 272nd Infantry Regiment of the 69th Division, the Battle Axe Regiment, where he saw action through the German surrender in WWII. With the capitulation of Germany, Buie left his post with the 272 and joined the 25th Division as Chief of Staff in the Pacific. It is believed he acquired this rare prototype during his service. CONDITION: Fine. Approximately 90% of the original matte finish is retained with some rubs and scratches, especially on the magazine. Stock shows scattered scuffs and dings. Crisp well defined bore with some residue in the grooves. Fine mechanics. A truly outstanding and well documented example of one of the great WWII firearm rarities. Lot # 1130 (Sale Order: 23 of 345)

Introduced in 1929 in hopes of securing foreign military contracts. Its open bolt gas operated tilting action was designed by Emmanuel Holek, brother of ZB-26 machine gun inventor Vaclav Holek. In the interwar period it was trialed by numerous countries including the United States, and was fielded by China and Ethiopia. Constructed from plum finished milled steel, the action uses a unique offset locking bolt. To compensate for the offset bolt, the drift adjustable blade front sight and 1600 meter tangent rear are also offset. Right side of the receiver is stamped with the 3-line CZ Brno address. The serial number, model designation and Czech rampant lion proof are also stamped on the top rear flat. 2-piece oiled walnut forend with a distinctive finned aluminum heat sink. The walnut pistol grip stock is fitted with a ribbed steel butt plate. Includes 1 circle "Z" marked 10-round magazine as well as a period tan leather military sling. CONDITION: Very good. Metal components retain the vast majority of their factory plum finish with areas of thinning on the receiver. Bolt has some discoloration spots from age. Stocks are good with some expected scattered impressions. Bore is well defined with some mild frosting. Smooth mechanics. A very nice example of an extremely desirable interwar self-loading military rifle. Barrel Length: 23" Caliber/Bore: 8mm Mauser FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: CZ Model: ZH-29 Paperwork: Previous Listing Serial Number: 10209

(C) KOISHIKAWA GRANDPA NAMBU SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH STOCK HOLSTER.

Lot # 1131 (Sale Order: 24 of 345)

The Model A 1902 Nambu is better known as the "Grandpa" Nambu. They were accepted for service in 1904, with production delayed until 1906. They were produced at Koishikawa Arsenal in Tokyo and were available for both commercial and private officer purchase. While the Army allowed officers to purchase the pistol privately, they were prohibitively expensive, and only approximately 2400 were manufactured before production ceased. The "grandpa" is further distinguished by the small trigger guard (which has also led to the nickname "peanut guard"), wood bottom magazine, and slot for a holster/stock; a concept similar to the Mauser C96, which influenced some of the designs of internals as well. Matching serial numbers observed on bolt lock, firing pin carrier, interior of cocking knob, recoil spring guide, twice on bolt, locking block, barrel assembly on fore lug, right side of frame, both grip scales, and magazine. Trigger appears to also be numbered correctly, but is partially blocked by guard. Stock numbered on iron and at shoulder loop to a different gun, 2043. CONDITION: Very good as period refinished. Retains the vast majority of the period bluing with some scattered handling marks and some fine oxidation to muzzle and at bolt lock sleeve. Some surface mossing to frame and thinning to sharp edges. Grips very good with some scattered handing marks and abraded heads. Mechanically fine, bore with strong rifling and mild frosting. Stock/holster very good with handling marks and impressions throughout, and attaches firmly. Some scattered oxidation to attachment shaft. Accessories: Stock Holster Barrel Length: 5" Caliber/Bore: 8mm Nambu FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Koishikawa Model: Grandpa Nambu Serial Number: 109
